a small part of me legit feels bad for JP as the benzo addiction has clearly fried his brain, but the rest of me wants to fuck him up for disrespecting my female homies 😤
He's always been a Jerk ass that needed a slap. I'm sorta biased though because I've made a career in higher ed and have had to deal with skads of maladjusted Phd's that don't want to admit they don't know everything.
She's a North Korean defector who got plastic surgeries out the ass and has been doing a press tour for the last 10 years with increasingly bizarre and elaborate exaggerations and lies of her life before leaving.
Kinda yes and no because its like
High social pressure in general. I feel the recent trends are going toward "lets also apply high social pressure about physical beauty to men!" than "how about some body positivity...?".
But opinions about plastic surgery is still controversial and actual statics show SK got like not that high rate of surgery across the population
but the statics. the numbers are high enough to make some people say "all korean(especially womens)are materialistic whores with plastic surgery" while some people say "we got great plastic surgery industry please come here we offer good deal" aaand some people say "yo like why arent we seriously talking about middle schoolers having plastic surgery uhh guys dont we need to talk about beauty standard" aaaand the discussion will eventually end up someone shouting "shut the fuck up you commie NK chinese spy globalist jewish puppet ukraine taiwan lover your parents must be from filthy place like south asia" aaand someone talk back with "bruh what the fuck why are you being racist" aaaand few moments later they're arguing about which video game is the 'wrong one' and yeah i'd say we got a massive issue
So liberal dummies like you who call themselves "leftists" don't rebel when your government tries to invade DPRK or kill their citizens with sanctions. That's why your fascist government needs to keep brainwashing people, as they did with you. The alternative explanation that it's within your class interests to hate 3rd world communists is much more pessimistic and you don't want it :D
She's such a cynical grifter she was disbarred from the NK defector community and all but shamed out of SK media. Her own mother calls her a bullshit artist.
South Koreans hate her, they call her the "plastic defector."
She breathlessly goes from "NK is a nightmare dystopia where they shoot you with anti-aircraft cannons for watching Friends on VHS..." to "...and that's why American college campuses are worse than North Korea because professors put their pronouns in their emails."
As u/bobqt explained, she's a defector from NK and has spent the last decade doing a press tour with her grift about the horrors of North Korea. The reason she's become memeable is because all of what she says both doesn't stay consistent and is so fantastical that it's just hilarious.
IIRC she's one of the people that the media uses to hyperbolise how bad NK is to the point it comes off as a saturday morning cartoon bad guy nation rather than any meaningful focus on actual issues there.
Every domestic drone comes with a pulse pistol - if the cleanup protocol is not run manually with some regularity, they execute the homeowner on the spot.
I know the context with Park and all but does this feel a tad racist comparing Tau to East Asians? Given how Tau are coded.
Genuine vibe check and I'm not accusing OP or people that enjoy the meme of racism.
If it comes off like that there wasn't any intent of that, it's supposed to be making fun of both in lore and community BS about the Tau and how a lot of stuff about them is just straight up lies and hyperbole of anything actually there.
Definitely didn't think it was intentional. Absolutely get what you're saying and the dig at Park (who's definitely a sensationalist grifter happy to mouth piece for the far right). Was just thinking in terms of it maybe having unintentional alternative readings related to the Tau being Asian coded and some potential issues with the comparison maybe- and just wanted to vibe check on that.
Oh yeah I get that, there's been some stuff I've seen throughout the community as a whole where the vibes are kinda scuffed and things need clarifying because of the material used for it where it comes off as being possible racist or transphobic etc
It sucks that you're getting downvoted because this is obviously a good faith question, but nah I think it's more meant to be "comparing the communist coded faction to communistic nations" rather than any sort of Asian focus
Cheers for saying that. Really just wanted to vibe check and see what people's thoughts were. Definitely agree that OPs intention wasn't racist- just thought maybe it was an unfortunate coincidence that it was an East Asian person person being used to illustrate that.
I've got some good answers though and am cool that people are generally happy to see past any possible racial connotations to get to the political commentary. Just thought it was worth maybe having the conversation.
It's not so much a take as earnestly a question/vibe check.
Was sort of getting at the point that, fairly tangently to the political commentary the author intended, the lady standing in as a Tau defector happens to be east Asian, and the Tau are heavily coded as east Asian. Using a real world culture or race as a template for an alien race/ species is prevelent in media and is a racist troupe (especially when you portray humans as predominantly white europeans- like 40k does). So comparing Tau to East Asians could have that vague element of troupey othering we see in the source material. I was just trying to get a vibe check on whether we think this meme may have unintentionally (I get what the meme is supposed to be saying) touched on that a little.
Honestly, and this is coming from me being East Asian, I think you're really grasping at straws here. To me it's weirder that your first reaction is to associate the Tau with Asian culture in the first place, since GW and the fans have in large part moved away from that.
I'd definitely take a look at the new Farsight model if you think GW have moved off that take, bit I digress.
Glad to hear that your okay with this. Like I said I was genuinely just trying to check everyone was okay with this. I'm not saying I think this meme crosses that line, but I wanted to check everyone thought the same, because I could see how this could be read that way (I'm not east Asian).
I appreciate your looking out. This is something I think about too — particularly savage orruks from AOS. They definitely borrow some indigenous aesthetics so it rubs me the wrong way, but my take is that even if a fictional group is coded X real world culture it’s not a problem unless they’re being made into a joke.
So even if Tau are somehow derivative of hodgepodge East Asian cultures, it’s not a problem unless they’re being made to look bad, weak, or stereotypical. Does that sound right?
I think that's a fair take for sure. It's a conversation and there are plenty of valid perspectives. Tau are portrayed as being weaker in melee, which could bave some problematic undertones there.
A big factor for me is how other cultures are mapped onto other factions and how they are represented. For example the Imperium in 40k is very white europeanesque, and they are there to represent the "human" faction. That makes the East Asian inspired Tau stick out as a big more of an issue to me I think.
Makes sense.
I have to think a bunch of English dudes playing D&D in the 80s were probably unaware of broader issues concerning appropriation, sensitivity, inclusivity, etc, when they made the setting. It seems like they’re slowly getting more inclusive with Black characters and women and non-binary characters and such so hopefully they will keep moving the setting in that direction.
It can be for sure. Depends how Asians and humans more broadly are also portrayed in that setting. If humans are coded as predominantly western European (like in 40k), then having the only representation of Asianess be an alien race is dehumanising.
I think if OP was trying to make that comparison here I'd be pretty uncomfortable with the meme. But given the context and who Ms Park is I really don't think that's the case, and was more saying that could be an unintentional reading that could make some people a bit iffy with this one. Was just checking what we thought on that one, and judging by my down votes, this one doesn't cross that line (which is good - again was just earnestly trying to vibe check that to keep the space positive for everyone).
The question was asked in pure good faith. And yes, I undestand your point. My bias is that I find the Tau more "human" than the 40k human, so I don't see it as a negative representation, but it does make the coded culture "unhuman".
I get you, tried to give a friendly answer so hope I didn't come across aggressive.
Definitely get your perspective and I think lots will agree with you. I think it's a blurry line and that's just why I wanted to check how little were on this one (seems people are okay with it so I might have just been a little too soft here).
She's a North Korean defector who left the country as a child but has hopped on the right wing grift and has spread very silly and just insane lies about the country and has ruined credibility of other defectors who speak out about genuine issues with the nation. She can't tell a straight story, iirc she's said how her dad was killed but then at another point that he fled the country with her so on so on.
She's also a right winger as a whole and has made very bold statements like "The Woke USA is just like North Korea"
GW’s writing is more realistic than some of the shit she says
That’s the future Jordan Peterson wants
a small part of me legit feels bad for JP as the benzo addiction has clearly fried his brain, but the rest of me wants to fuck him up for disrespecting my female homies 😤
To be fair, he was a transphobic misogynist before his addiction, so I don't think you have to feel that bad.
He's always been a Jerk ass that needed a slap. I'm sorta biased though because I've made a career in higher ed and have had to deal with skads of maladjusted Phd's that don't want to admit they don't know everything.
Don’t feel bad for him. He’s a deeply evil man and got what he sought after.

Go fuck a lobster lol
💀
It’s just a shame nobody glued his office door shut while he was in there.
Next week we find out that the T'au don't even let you have rooms because it's against the Greater Good. Starting to wonder about these defectors.
All members of Tau society have to sleep in a comically large super bed that fits 30 people at a time
How else are you meant to have a gay communist utopia without communal beds?
Communal hammocks?
Always knew those T'au were a bunch of swingers.
Can someone explain who she is? Or why she is memable?
She's a North Korean defector who got plastic surgeries out the ass and has been doing a press tour for the last 10 years with increasingly bizarre and elaborate exaggerations and lies of her life before leaving.
Doesn't South Korea have a lot of societal pressure to have plastic surgery? I remember reading it's a significant issue there.
Yes, the plastic surgery craze started with american doctors who thought traditional korean features made women look untrustworthy and cold hearted

She’s a grifter she does this to show off how “socialism bad” also she goes on about how woke people are exactly like NK
Became se it makes her a lot of money
That would do it
Grifting, it's a hell of a money maker
Ask yourself that question. Then read manufacturing consent

“Columbia University is more authoritarian than North Korea because some of my professors were okay with trans people existing”
Shes gonna make people believe that NK isnt a fascist hellhole if she keeps this shit up

I fucking love this wave of memes

...No? Would it help if it was a Belarusian defector instead? I don't get this take.

Aye, the downvotes have spoken. 😅

You come across as very comprehensive. The soft ones might be the one downvoting en masse what is an interesting discussion to be had
That's very kind of you to say- thank you comrade. :)
question, why does everyone make fun of her?
Because she's a liar and her lies are hilarious.

Who is this shiny faced woman and why do I keep seeing her with dubious propaganda constantly photoshoped under her?
Damn, I've always been interested in reading her book. Any recommendations for NK defection from a truther?
