You know how much money you have, and it will only be a waste if you can’t afford other things that you need more. As long as you aren’t blowing like half your savings on this, i think you should do what you want.

bucksncowboys513

As long as you aren't neglecting your other financial responsibilities and you're buying because you like it, it's not a waste. Some will only see sneakers as a functional clothing item and others realize it's a hobby.

Western-Positive-568

Yeah right now my only responsibilities financially are my gas money and occasional lunches when I can’t eat at home. This makes me think that right now is going to be the best time to spoil myself. Right now all I want is to expand my collection into other brands than nike, that’s why I specifically want these 3 shoes one of them I have never even someone wear them at least not that colorway. It’s safe to be said that it’s not for the hype.

Round-Sense7935

I think you also need to look at how old you are and where you’re at career wise. If you’re 20 and in school with some extra cash, getting the shoes you want is cool. If you’re 30 and not putting money away for the future because you want to buy shoes that are 5x the original retail cost, I’d say that’s not the best use of money.

Western-Positive-568

Definitely not in my 30s lmao but I get what you’re saying just spend responsibly like everything.

Round-Sense7935

I didn’t see you say your age in the post but I started getting into a bit of collecting a few months ago at 37. But yeah, the main thing is to be responsible. I know too many people who have almost every desirable drop from the past few years but they don’t have the money for a necessary car repair.

Apprehensive-Can-857

All hobbies are unreasonable. It's pretty simple. If you can afford it, then go for it.

Kickzandsports

Life is all about balance. Most people (in their 20s) spend their weekends out clubbing, drinking, etc. and that quickly adds up. Others spend a lot of money eating out. If collecting shoes makes you happy, I don’t see why not. As long as you budget your money and aren’t spending most of it on a hobby, I don’t see a problem. If you have a job that pays well and have saved up for these 3 pairs you want, get the pairs and don’t worry about what others think. Most Americans can’t even cover a $1k emergency without going into debt. If you’re saving money every month from your job and taking care of your other responsibilities and still have money left over to enjoy, then do it. Life is unpredictable and there’s no guarantee any of us will be around in 5, 10 years. You should always save and invest and be smart with your bread, but also learn how to enjoy it. No point in just hoarding cash and never actually spending it on things that make you happy

Western-Positive-568

You just organized all my thoughts into perfect words.

Kickzandsports

Happy to be helpful

jrbrownie00

Sneaker spending my disposable income. I don’t really drink or other recreational, I typically only eat out once a week, rarely buy coffee out, fast food, etc. I think setting a budget is smart and it seems like thats what you’re doing. Don’t let someone else tell you how to spend your money.

isaiah58bc

As long as you understand the difference between investing and collecting, you are fine. Also, though not often spoken about, sneakers slowly break down over time. The materials they are made of slowly break down. This is why people selling old "grails" that were even never worn are discovering separation in best case scenarios, actually crumbling in many cases. Yellowing is deterioration. Yellowed soles are becoming brittle, which people avoid discussing. Decide are you collecting shoes to display, or to rotate and enjoy wearing. Going beyond your question. Keep a realistic balance of your savings and investments, to allow you to enjoy your personal spending just to enjoy life.

Western-Positive-568

I like to wear and rotate all my sneakers. I just keep great care of them. Thanks for you advice though, that’s definitely what I like to do, I always save more than what I spend.

isaiah58bc

It amazes me some people, almost weekly, spend more on Starbucks/Panera or eating out in general, than you will spend on one pair of sneakers. That means, over a month, if they prepared their own coffee and meals at home, they would have saved more than you will spend on one pair of sneakers. It could be vaping, smoking, drinking alcohol, but they judge your spending on something that lasts against their vices.

Kickzandsports

This. $6 a day on Starbucks coffee is the norm now for most Americans but if you spend $185 on a pair of Js that’ll last you years, people are quick to talk

Jimieus

Who will give you a more responsible response here: Your friends who have known you for years, or a sub dedicated to sneakers? It's your money, but I'm just saying.

Western-Positive-568

Well I was thinking in a part the subreddit, since this is what you guys are into and have more life/sneaker experience than me. If I were to make a mistake this sub probably would have gone through it. And my friend doesn’t really have hobbies all she does is save her money so she is a little biased.

darknighttime

9 pairs sound reasonable, especially if you were gifted some and wear them all. As an older sneakerhead, I would just advise not to spend beyond your means and prioritize living expenses and retirement savings. You live life to enjoy it. If sneakers make you happy and you are responsible with your money, then spend away. Your friends might think it's silly, but I guarantee they spend money on things you might think are silly too.

eyi526

I'm very sure r/personalfinance would also rip into you, but you have to consider this: can you still pay bills and expenses after you buy shoes? If so, then great! If not, then perhaps it's best not to buy shoes now. You might be able to find them in the aftermarket or they may restock later. Take it from someone who stupidly racked up debt over buying shoes and other things when he was younger: definitely ask yourself "is it worth it?" To me, not really. Sadly, I still know grown adults who are in credit debt from overspending. They have that "I gotta spend money every time I get paid" or "damn look at this month's releases...I gotta have them all!" mentality.

Western-Positive-568

I totally get that but I will never ever use credit to buy sneakers, I feel like I would rely to much on it. If I ever want a sneaker it would be from the cash I have and don’t need for things that are more important. I think I know better than to put a release before my responsibilities.

eyi526

Then consider yourself smarter than most!! Keep it up!

TemporaryGuide8225

You live once, if you don’t you’ll never know, I truly believe in you can’t take money with you so enjoy it while you can, it’s your choice to make not hers you saved the money spend how you want 🤷🏽‍♂️

DuskActual

As long as you’re not spending money for bills on shoes, I’d hardly call it a waste.

slinkysmooth

Maybe just buy 1 and see how that makes you feel. Sneakers like any other “collectible” are at the end of the day only material things. I’ve found that satisfaction in those things is only brief. That being said, it’s your money and you’re free to do with it as you please. But only as long as you’re not neglecting your finances and that includes saving money for your future. Especially an emergency fund (if you’re at that point in your life). But as I’ve gotten older and even more so as I’ve seen my dad decline in health, I’ve realized more and more that material things aren’t that important. I’ve got over 100 pairs with almost all being heat. I love the hunt for pairs I want and making deals. I’m a collector but I haven’t even worn so many of them. And that’s when I love sneakers the most. When they’re on feet. Isn’t that that their purpose? I’m at that point in my life where I don’t need more things. I need more time. And I need more time to spend with those I love and bring joy to my life. Sorry to get somewhat deep but that where I am in my life with all that I’m experiencing. My closet is full of shoes but I’d trade all of them for more quality time with my family especially my dad…

Helpful-Fun-533

Your friend either just doesn’t understand or is a bit jealous. Honestly sounds like a sensible thing if you know the fest will be around again and sounds like from what you said you’ve been saving so who is anyone else to say what you do with your money

Infinitewave777

You really want them until you buy them and they sit in your closet for months/years. There have been many pair that I thought I really wanted/"needed". I would just buy one and forget about the other two. Spend the rest of the money on something else you enjoy :)

eugenethegrappler

Not sure. Is there something in your friend she’s seeing that you’re not? How many sneakers do you own already

Western-Positive-568

9 pairs, 3 gifted and 5 I have bought.

eugenethegrappler

Not bad actually. I say it’s up to you. You know what you can afford she’s not your wife lol

realreplica

Is she someone you are interested in? I’m assuming that is why her opinion really matters to you?

Western-Positive-568

I’m a girl lmao she’s my best friend she just made me doubt myself and I wanted to see more perspectives.

realreplica

Gotcha! Maybe she’s jealous that you are financially stable? Anyhow, it’s good that you have a friend that cares and speaks up. Communication is key in all relationships.

Western-Positive-568

Na she makes way more money than me she is just trying to give me financial advice like an older sister would.

realreplica

👊🏼

Poppa_Keef

We all have hobbies that make us happy. You could just as easily find one of her hobbies that you would consider "wasting money". Just because she doesn't get it, doesn't make it meaningless to you. As many other comments have pointed out, as long as it's money you've budgeted for and aren't neglecting anything of importance, you spend your extra income however you feel fit. If you're truly worried about spending too much, then maybe don't buy all 3 at one time? Maybe just one of them, or two if you'd feel better about that?

hbteq

You won’t regret it as long as you don’t buy them with money you don’t have

Lapsed-Comic-Fan

You need new friends. As long as your bills are paid and you’re not putting yourself in the hole or your family (if you have one) it’s no one’s concern what you do with your money. It’s yours. There’s always something that everyone has a “hobby” for and could say to that person “you’re wasting your money”. I’m just glad I have a wife who gives no shits what I spend my money on, but I also make good money so it works out.

UnmakingTheBan2022

But what you want. Is your friend also your accountant?

bigtallblacknbald

If you’re saving for retirement and your other future goals, and have emergency money stashed, it’s all good

maru37

It’s your money and you can do whatever you want with it. Is it responsible to own more sneakers that you can possibly wear? Probably not but people spend their money in all sorts of different ways. If you work and pay your bills and put a little aside and still have money left for sneakers, go for it.

QuimFinger

You sound young and stupid.

Western-Positive-568

Thank you🫶🏻

Desperate-4aTesla-97

Only buy or go for retail

Desperate-4aTesla-97

And only collect what you truly love to wear don’t let anybody hype you up…
