The battle system was excellent, Lightning one of the best protagonists in series history, the graphics are still great, there’s a lot to like about Final Fantasy XIII.
I would happily pay for Square, or anyone really, to bring back FF13s battle system in a “low budget” style game like Octopath.
I have atleast 5 friends who gave up on 13 because the battle system was a slog the first 20 hours - and it was. They tutorialized it for far far too long and people fell off; hell, I don’t want to play it again.
But once it opens up and you’re freely prepping for fights + making twitch strategical decisions in a hurry with party composition… best “turn based” jrpg battle system ever.
I would love another game to pick up the concept and run with it; just get to the meat in the first 5 hours, not like 20+ hours to give us control of it
They really overdid it when it comes to how long the FF13 “tutorial” was. And it’s a shame.
The battle system really broke down turn based jrpg combat to it's bare essentials. I frequently coast by battles in other games by doing the same 3 or 4 moves, either attacking, defending, using magic or buffs and debuffs. FFXIII streamlined the hell out of it but made you focus on the actual fights and how different enemies react to certain paradigms (rather than fiddling with party composition and equipment). It was the first turn based final fantasy that genuinely had me engaged in the combat rather than the story.
And yes I also think Lightning is awesome, even if the story was hard to follow.
don't you jsut press the same button over and over? Like can you not beat the game with your eyes closed during every battle? I've wanted to revisit it and give it another shot, but this is how I remember it, and it was the reason I Stopped playing all those years ago. What am I missing?
But while I do enjoy the trilogy so far, she should’ve been a bit nicer in the first game as people often say that she was too aggressive in the first half of the game.
I will agree with that. She’s super over protective of her sister. She kind of acts like a female Squall. But once she opens up, she becomes a much more likable character.
She was the worst to Snow. But I think acting like a big sister to Hope warms her a lot. Fun fact that many people probably don’t know, Snow is voiced by Troy Baker before he got super famous.
i'm glad they redeemed her with her arc with hope, i know most people hate him but the fact that she was about to leave a weak 14 year old boy behind because he'll "slow her down" was fucked up lol. was kinda rude to sazh too
but she ended up being really good by the half way point
The first one has a really fun battle system once it finally opens up. It just takes way too long to get there.
I personally also enjoyed the story and characters, even if the game putting important details in data logs is annoying.
Haven't played enough of the other two
I loved all 3 of them. The music, the fantasy environment, and damn is lightning sexy AF and an awesome hero. Seriously loved these games. I do struggle with 16 though, literally skipping through all the dialogue.
Meh, idk man. I love the gore, echoes of the fallen was sweet but short. Just a lot of meh sometimes, fetch quests. Weird blur / frame rate, should have waited for PC so that's on me. Lack of leveling other characters, that stupid dog. Torgul, GET EM, NOW torgul, blah, blah, blah. Amazing graphics, textures, and music. 6.9/10 for me. + Jamming square omfg, never should have made that item to make combos easy. Clive, awesome name, then Jill and Josh? Gtfo
YIKES! 16 too mature for you? There is no fucking way in hell you are going to say that 13 has a better story than 16. Just no fucking way.
The power of friendship in 13 was so fucking disgusting, so pathetically childish and when focusing on the ending of 13-3 I can say this was literally the worst ending to any form of media ever presented.
It's also totally different time, I was playing 13 in like 2012. Now it's 2024, I'm a different gamer too. No COD for years noway, less time gaming cause I just don't care too much anymore. I loved starfield too, it's just like the oblivion and Skyrim. 16 just seemed grey, but with kick ass character models and environments that would be better on a PC.
16 was the 2nd worse ff game I've ever played. The worse I've ever beaten and the only 1 that when it was over I immediately knew there's no chance in he'll I would ever replay again. I've replayed all but 1 of them multiple times, this will be my 2nd
I’ll say it. 13 had a better story than 16. 16s story had a good build up but ended in cliches and century old tropes. It was mad boring by the second half, and a total let (not to mention we could all see it coming from a mile away) down at the finale. I really enjoyed my time with it, but I won’t be replaying it for a long time.
Lightning returns is one of my fav FF games. The opening cinematic was incredible. The combat is exciting, and a fun take on the job system. I even liked the time constraint. The added pressure made each decision feel like do or die. Made every decision matter.
Not only is it better than people give it credit for, but the modern entries that people love are heavily built upon the stagger system this game introduced. The combat system itself is one of the best in the series, and the linearity isn't that bad in hindsight (although I never minded it that much tbh).
The game is also visually stunning to this day. With minimal upresing, it would be on par with a lot of games released in the past five years, and probably better than some. Even without anything, it's still a looker.
I think it's a fun tragedy, though honestly I never played the last one but the path they took the story makes it more of a Hero's Tragedy rather than a more traditional JRPG plot.
Until rebirth they were my favorite ff games. Yes some people didn't like it but most of them weren't skilled enough to understand the fighting cause it wasn't the standard sit there and wait for the atb to fill and just hit attack or magic. U actually had to have skill and be fast to beat the enemies is 13
Yeah the battle system for 13 I wasn't too fond off and I saw the final boss fight and it was not my cup of tea but that's just my opinion so it shouldn't really matter
The opening was epic and hyped up expectations that it would deliver as ffx did when first playing that. Unfortunately it was all just modern polish and no substance.
13 ended great. However, 13-2 and LR felt off. It didn't feel grounded and the world building wasn't there to correlate to 13. 13 had good world building but it never elaborates anything relating to 13-2 and LR; if it did maybe might of been better.
I couldn't get into 13 and 13-2 I found even more difficult to stick to.
But lightning returns had me weirdly gripped from the start and the combat system was quote interesting.
Also lightning rocks the buster sword.
While the battle system was disruptive, 13 is one of the best FF. Pretty solid game.
Part 2 is cool.
Lightning returns did too much for its era. If it was released for PS4/PS5 instead of PS3, it would be pretty similar to both FFVII remake games.
13 was the first Final Fantasy I had played in about 20 years. I love JPG’s, but for some reason, just never played Final Fantasy games after 3/6. 13 was not fun to me in any way shape or form. I really dislike the battle system and the story just didn’t click. But, I love the soundtrack and I think the graphics are amazing considering when the game came out.
I'm probably the biggest FF XIII hater on the planet but I have to say the battle system is great. It's probably the best iteration of ATB system alongside with FF X-2's combat system (which is also my second most hated FF game lol). Music is not Nobuo Uematsu but great.
I replayed and finished FF XIII like 4 times to 100% completion despite I hate everything else about the game. Combat is that good.
Imagine if they managed to combine FF X-2 combat system and jobclasses with XIII's fast pace multiple stacking ATB system. Add slow down like FF VII Remake while selecting commands. It would be THE best fast paced ATB system without actually making the game Action combat.
I have at least 2.
The first game had a good and complete story. The gameplay was just crap.
The second game rectified the gameplay issue, but to me, the story suffered.
If they had done 13-2s gameplay with the first game, it would've been the perfect, if not best, version of 13. The other 2 games wouldn't have needed to exist.
Amazing story, characters, graphics, aesthetics, music, diverse settings and ever moving and evolving story, very story driven and characters focused, the best combat system, capped leveling to stop power leveling and so the game is consistently fun and challenging, great end game content, amazing variety of bosses, and the best antagonist in the series' history.
Caius came, saw and conquered.
(LR:13 is not capped in this. It knows what it did wrong).
Final Fantasy games (to me) always had graphics so far ahead of the competition that they literally felt like they were somehow in a league of their own.
FF13 was the last game that gave me that feeling and it still looks really good.
The games since might be better but the graphics were never as game changing which probably just means that other game developers caught up.
Lightning Returns has some of the most unique gameplay and atmosphere a mainline FF game has to offer and there's no FF game you could even compare it to.
No annoying shipping wars.... generally.
The couples are mostly laid out. And they (probably) are:
Lightning/Hope.
Vanille/Fang.
Snow/Serah.
Whatever Caius/Yeul/Noel have going on.
.....Right?
The lore is fantastic, the mechanical gods and the door to etro needing a lot of sacrifice is so cool, the world being a utopia untill the sacrifice is marvelous, the graphic and music holds till now, the battle system is really interesting and could easily be improved upon
Every other final fantasy you play afterwards feels infinitely better. It’s the best one to start with if you’re new to final fantasy as you have no expectations going in.
Only one? I love these games, for me they are a perfect story going on, how to stay strong, keep going and build a new future no matter the trouble.
Gameplay: the battle system is a perfect mix between old school RPGs with turn based elements and new generation of action games. It was improved in XIII-2 and changed in LR to suit a single character, but it keeps the OG idea. I really love it overall, especially in XIII-2 where you can recruit monsters to help you and you develop them to become powerful, which I wish was made in LR as well.
Story: I don't mind a linear game, but the order of how XIII narrated the XIII days before could've been done better. In XIII-2 the time travel is a genuine idea to set a new concept on how things can go and change, but to follow the exact order of events was a bit confusing. And in LR, I loved to see how Light has changed so far and what woman she became and how powerful she is. Not gonna lie, I cried 😭 at the end, specially after the credits 🥰
Music: all 3 games have a lot of beautiful soundtracks that help to live the adventures and explore the world. Even now I still listen to their music 😁
I kinda said a lot so yeah, I love the games and I hope in a Remaster like FF X
The trilogy imo got greatly better as it went 13 is my least favorite ff. 13-2 is mid pack for me and lightning returns is actually near the top of the list
Just one? Okay.
The music is absolutely stellar. I was worried about a lack of Uematsu, but I find myself going back to these soundtracks more often than others.
At the time it had absolute best soundtrack in the entire series bar none. Now ff14 and ff16 and obviously Remake/Rebirth have push that bar even further and even then FF13 trilogy OST still hold up to these jougernauts. The music of this game made a big part of my childhood and I love it unconditionally. Lighting is still to this day the hottest MC in the entire series.
The story is the best in all of FF history in my opinion. No game made me cry like this one. The OST is great, the graphics were amazing and still are. XIII2 was very fun too. There’s way more than just 1 good thing ❤️❤️ I NEED a remaster/release/remake. I just NEED to play it on ps5 😭😭
The music was good. The battle system was neat. Lightning returns was a great lead into action rpgs like 15/16.
But, the stories sucked and the character development was pretty bad (especially if you consider the trilogy as a whole).
The music was nice.
But I have to say one horrendous this. The ending of 13-3 was the worst ending to a fucking game, no, ANY form of media I have ever witnessed. The fucking power of friendship!? Flying in space, talking, breathing, nothing to protect them from the fact that there is no fucking oxygen. What piss poor writing.
The battle system was excellent, Lightning one of the best protagonists in series history, the graphics are still great, there’s a lot to like about Final Fantasy XIII.

You literally could have the game auto fight.
For the first few chapters, yes. Once you’re given free reign on who can be in your party, even random encounters can kick your ass
The battle system really broke down turn based jrpg combat to it's bare essentials. I frequently coast by battles in other games by doing the same 3 or 4 moves, either attacking, defending, using magic or buffs and debuffs. There ain’t really that many games. which protagonists are we ranking them above..?
But while I do enjoy the trilogy so far, she should’ve been a bit nicer in the first game as people often say that she was too aggressive in the first half of the game.
I will agree with that. She’s super over protective of her sister. She kind of acts like a female Squall. But once she opens up, she becomes a much more likable character.

She was the worst to Snow. But I think acting like a big sister to Hope warms her a lot. Fun fact that many people probably don’t know, Snow is voiced by Troy Baker before he got super famous.
Oh so that’s who voiced him originally in the English dub.
i'm glad they redeemed her with her arc with hope, i know most people hate him but the fact that she was about to leave a weak 14 year old boy behind because he'll "slow her down" was fucked up lol. was kinda rude to sazh too but she ended up being really good by the half way point

The story is kinda underrated. At least the setting of it. I am taking a lot of inspiration from it in the book I’m writing now
Some characters had cool designs and okay fight theme… and I had a mad crush on Fang growing up, it’s the messy bed hair I swear to god :c
She fire mane
I loved all 3 of them. The music, the fantasy environment, and damn is lightning sexy AF and an awesome hero. Seriously loved these games. I do struggle with 16 though, literally skipping through all the dialogue.

Not a fan of holidays in France I see. Jokes aside, I think that end is what happens when you work with fashion houses for the game.
16 was the 2nd worse ff game I've ever played. The worse I've ever beaten and the only 1 that when it was over I immediately knew there's no chance in he'll I would ever replay again. I've replayed all but 1 of them multiple times, this will be my 2nd

Phenomenal series of games, wish they would release them on modern consoles so I could replay them all
They are downloadable and playable on xbox series S/X and look great, same as on steam/deck.
Only have PS and Switch unfortunately.
I’d kill for this to come to PlayStation or something. A remaster would be nice or even a remake
...They're on the playstation store...
No they aren't.
No they aren’t
.....
i enjoyed the og ff13 a lot. and the soundtrack is 🔥

I can't...I barely played part one so I cannot give a answer
You played one so you could know to save the money rather than grabbing the other two! Money in the pocket!
They were that bad?
Until rebirth they were my favorite ff games. Yes some people didn't like it but most of them weren't skilled enough to understand the fighting cause it wasn't the standard sit there and wait for the atb to fill and just hit attack or magic. I am glad the second one lets you fight Lieutenant Colonel Jihl Nabaat, her being cutscene killed without a boss fight in the first one was annoying.
It looked amazing.
The opening was epic and hyped up expectations that it would deliver as ffx did when first playing that. Unfortunately it was all just modern polish and no substance.
It had good graphics.
first game still holds up visually, one of the best looking ps3 title.
Lightning is smoking hot
First game I saw that had amazing in game hair instead of chunky stuff and it was on ps3!
Serah gets the respect she deserves in xiii-2
13 ended great. However, 13-2 and LR felt off. It didn't feel grounded and the world building wasn't there to correlate to 13. 13 had good world building but it never elaborates anything relating to 13-2 and LR; if it did maybe might of been better.

Under-appreciated.
The day they give us a remaster of the trilogy. 🥺

I love all 3, faults and all :)
FF13 Brought us one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. And the graphics were beautiful at the time and still hold up today.
It's good illustration how to make a bad game.
Killer soundtrack. ...and Chocobos of Pulse is an 11/10 chocobo theme
Love the music.
Beautiful and unique environment art
I will eventually get around to playing the sequels so I have something to look forward to since they're supposedly better than the shitty first one.
Lightning is super pretty.

I really want to play them...
idk, XIII-2 was very enjoyable for me with all that time-paradox-bullshit, better than XIII in every way IMO
Artwork and music was superb.
The lore is fantastic, the mechanical gods and the door to etro needing a lot of sacrifice is so cool, the world being a utopia untill the sacrifice is marvelous, the graphic and music holds till now, the battle system is really interesting and could easily be improved upon
Leona Lewis- my hands.
They were visually appealing
Lightning aka Claire Farron is Hot
It's great and sadly not on ps5.
trilogy was fire!!really loved the trilogy<3
Every other final fantasy you play afterwards feels infinitely better. It’s the best one to start with if you’re new to final fantasy as you have no expectations going in.
All three installments have completely separate storylines that feel completely disconnected from the previous titles storyline.
Better OST than it had any business being

Noel's theme
Lightning at one point in time was the most powerful Final Fantasy character. That is all.
Summons and Sazh. That's about it. Lightning is cool in concept but this marked the downturn in FF series for me.
13 was my favourite FF game in the series until Rebirth so this is rather easy, yes I have played all of them before people ask
It ended
i actually liked the game, story terminology ( fal cie, l cies and so on) was a mess to understand at first.
I love all the main cast, except hope and snow.
Just one? Okay. The music is absolutely stellar. I was worried about a lack of Uematsu, but I find myself going back to these soundtracks more often than others.
It finally had a cast of female characters that could carry the series on their own.
Lightning is hot
The story was pretty fucking good.

At least it was still command based combat. While not my favorite the combat system was interesting.
13-2 was fun and added monster catcher mechanics and fun chocobo racing. Was the only highlight in the trash trilogy.
The graphics are gorgeous.
I loved it and will play it again
Lightning is one of the best female protagonists in the ff series
Music slaps
Great 🎶 tunes!
I guess it looked pretty at the time.
The soundtracks were pretty good !
Paradigm Shift. Stagger. Enemy launch.
They sold at least 1 copy (I think)
I love the character design and art style, that is all lol
i like Lightnings design but i hate that when they created her they just wanted a "female cloud"
Snow and Serah were not bad protagonists in the slightest, though Snow is way flawed this isn't a bad thing.
2 is one of the best RPG’s of all time
It’s lucky number 13
I liked Lightning's design. Thats about it.
All of it
13 battle system is actually excellent, but i was too young to understand or appreciate it on my first playthrough
Awesome battle system. Lightning is a great protag … sadly wasn’t a fan of everything & everyone else.
It looks nice.
its pretty
The story is the best in all of FF history in my opinion. No game made me cry like this one. The OST is great, the graphics were amazing and still are. XIII2 was very fun too. There’s way more than just 1 good thing ❤️❤️ I NEED a remaster/release/remake. I just NEED to play it on ps5 😭😭
The character Design and graphics. Gameplay and story sucks
The music was good. The battle system was neat. Lightning returns was a great lead into action rpgs like 15/16. But, the stories sucked and the character development was pretty bad (especially if you consider the trilogy as a whole).
No
I hated xiii 2
it’s over
The music was nice.
