Yes, it is good to have them indoors, with decent beds. You can build separate quarters for them if you like, or just have them build earplugs to avoid the sleep disturbance. They will meltdown less, but still sometimes. Personally I tend to ignore most meltdowns. I try to address their needs of course, but sometimes they just meltdown anyway. :)

agent_kater

Also working tables and stock?

TheKnittingDog

I move everything inside - including workbench and research station- except construction materials. And those live outside under the original shelters I built upon arrival. The smelters have to live outside, but everything else comes in to be protected from the rain.

I build walk-in freezers for my raw and cooked food. Once I research air conditioners I build one and set it to a very low temp (e.g., 14 °F). Over time I replace shelves with refrigerators (which I use only for the additional storage space; I leave them turned off unless a heatwave is particularly hot). Note that a lot of foot traffic into and out of the walk in freezer can let heat in, so sometimes I make an air conditioned entry way - basically a very short enclosed hallway with an A/C unit of its own. YMMV Also, I almost always tame a dog and put its bed inside because dogs are people too.

TheNarwhaal

Can't play comfortably knowing there are dogs outside :( I rescue everyone I see, my economy revolves around keeping a dog sanctuary. I almost forgot Hope existed.

artigan99

Sure. I put most everything indoors eventually. I try to set things up for short travel times as much as possible (ie. shelves near the workbenches, and refrigerator near the cookstove with more shelves, etc.) They get things done faster that way, plus they are happier in a nice environment.

DreadTiger66

I move everything indoors. I start with a common area where I'll have a kitchen and dining area, with room for crafting tables and entertainment items. Then I'll build individual bedrooms, and if they are at least 4x5, you get a happiness bonus. I'll put a wardrobe in each bedroom to store clothing, weapons, and tools. Then I'll build a large room with shelves for non-construction materials. Finally, I'll build another large room with stockpiles for construction materials. Having all rooms connected as part of a large, multi-story building helps with workflow and keeping survivors indoors during extra-cold winters.

bbbbbert86uk

Always give them their own rooms as it will increase their happiness level and don’t forget to put flooring down not just leave it as the bare foundation floor that is the default because that will increase happiness too. And if they get married make sure to give them a bed next to each other in the same room. Not sure why the game doesn’t have double beds for when they get married though but as long as they sleep next to each other it will increase happiness

drmike0099

By “next to each other” it means literally side by side. I spent months (game time) wondering why my married couple had the “didn’t sleep with loved one” happiness penalty and it was because their beds were in the same room but not adjacent. I thought it was because their sleep schedules were not in sync.

Lower-Reward-1462

If you have individual rooms of at least 20 tiles big (such as 4x5, etc.) you get a whopping +18 happiness! People only need to share a room if they are in love. Otherwise, need separate bedrooms. You don't need no 6x6 or whatever. Now, you can put whatever else you want in that room, as long as their bed is the only bed. Generally I only put things only they would use there (such as putting the cooking stove in the cook's bedrooms) so others don't disturb them while they sleep. The better material the house is made of, the better it will withstand attacks (especially from flyers) as well as the better it will retain heat and cold air. If you make your house out of sticks, the flyers will one-shot them and they won't stay warm in the winter very well even with a heating source. On the flip side, if you make them with brick, then they will withstand attacks and keep your folks warm. :) The more you have inside the better because if they have to go out side to get stuff it wastes a lot of time, and if there's a toxic ash storm, or raining, or something like that, then the people get upset. Not to mention of course, outside won't be cooled or warmed to your liking. Also make sure to carpet your houses, or everyone will suffer a -5 penalty to happiness while inside. I think you get an increase to happiness instead if it's carpeted but I don't remember how much.

Spamacus66

You definitely want them in a proper house. Use stick walls internally to make individual bedrooms. Ideally make they're rooms 6x6 if you can, the larger rooms give a significant happiness boost. Once they're in their own rooms you can do away with the earplugs. I usually start with a basic one room house just to get them properly indoors. Combine that with earplugs so they can sleep undisturbed. Then got cooking and eating inside as well as research crafting etc. From there I expand out the house. Usually living quarters are on 2nd floor.

Prestigious-Area4559

I build a long house with a common area for crafting and relaxing. A "cold room" with AC units to keep the temperature at 30 degrees. A hallway thats 3 squares wide and a bunch of 5×4 bedrooms. I do the flat roofing and just put all my solar panels on top of the roof.

phrackage

My cold room is always set to -2. If it’s below zero it counts as a freezer so food stays fresh. A fridge is 0-6 degrees. 30 is a warm/hot day 🔥

Prestigious-Area4559

I'm one of those weird Americans. I use the fahrenheit system. 30 degrees is 2 degrees below freezing

phrackage

I’m so sorry this is really duh of me! 🤦 Sorry for being a metric nazi and continue enjoying the freedom units

Prestigious-Area4559

Lol, alls good. We Americans are the oddballs. United States, Liberia, and Myanmar are the only three countries to use this system. We are the minority here

phrackage

As a European-Asia-Pacific Australasian, let me tell you we love our American cousins. Our roots and bonds go deep

SolidPublic3766

Eventually everything should be inside but I do it piece by piece. Start with a one room house with beds inside; then add another room and get cooking and food inside, then another for crafting stuff, a leisure room and just keep going piece by piece until you have to go outside as minimally as possible.

mommaquilter-ab

Since my planet goes thru both Extreme Heat and Extreme Cold, I find that having the ability to have my settlers work inside helps a lot. I gave them all their own tiny bedrooms, with a heater, an air vent, windows and thermostat, and their working area has air conditioning/ heating controlled with a thermostat and windows. Having all the tables inside so they can work without having to give them breaks during an Extreme Heat/Cold phase really helps with productivity. My settlers don't have heat exhaustion or hypothermia, and I don't have to worry about their clothing as much. I also have all the fridges alongside the casks inside so they can handle them easily without walking far. The storage is on a covered porch right beside their home/working studio. The little drones take everything they produce and put it where it needs to go. Settlers only have to walk a little ways to get what they need during these heat/cold events. Walking wastes so much time it's crazy!!! During non-heat/cold events, having everything close reduces all the walking to a minimum. Having everything close also helps with lightning strikes and with protection from attacks. Don't have to put as big a defensive fortification when everything is nice and tight. Repairs also take virtually no time, because everything is nice and close. I like to think having everything really efficient helps with their melt downs, but it's probably just me. Watching the games pathing mechanics drives me nuts when I don't have it set up like this.

hungrycarebear

I personally build a 16x16 house, make some 3x2 bedrooms on one side, then on the opposite side, put all the crafting benches and a few shelves up. Then right outside I make some stockpiles under some shelters.
