Something I will say is that when someone says to avoid a whole side of town, be careful with that, as some of the nicest neighborhoods in the city may actually be outer parts of said sides of town. For instance, old money neighborhoods like Strathmore and Sedgwick are outer South Side and North Side neighborhoods respectively and there are other outer neighborhoods on those sides of town that are solid to quite nice as well. So, that may be something to keep in mind.

Second this. We moved on the Northside in the Court-Woodlawn area and we love living here. We were advised from friends and family to look at the suburbs, but I am so glad we trusted our gut and moved over here. Affordable, quiet and central to everything.

Cpkh1

A great example of a neighborhood I was thinking of, which also has a high percentage of homeowners.

GottaLoveGrids

Ditto. Everyone here has different tolerances for what they consider safe or not. OP, if you're interested in a place, drive around and perhaps walk around and see if it's your speed. The city is big enough that there are neighborhoods for many different lifestyles and price points.

That is a really good point. I appreciate that insight. I’ve lived in some shady places, so I have a pretty high tolerance, but I do worry about car break ins. I moved to a small town in Vermont 4 years ago and my car has been broken into a few times here. Such an unsettling feeling knowing someone was in your space. 😬

Donna Lynn Jordan from Howard Hanna. I bought and sold 3 different houses in the area w/3 different realtors (over many years) and she was the best by far.

Ciara Migliaccio was awesome- spent months on the market and look at 12-15 places before landing our home and she was great every step of the way https://www.zillow.com/profile/Ciara%20Migliaccio%20Realtor

I’m in the market and I found a Buyers Agent. They’re there to look out for your wants and needs and not necessarily what a seller may be looking for (more $). Try to find local buyers agents and they will tailor your search directly to your needs.

ewjackson86

I don’t know much about that. Are there any downsides to that?

Kilik06

Well if you wanted to buy a house today and it has 3 other bids, would you know how to navigate/negotiate that properly in a timely manner to increase your success in buying the home? The way I see it, the Buyers Agent is there for the buyer (you) and is an expert in everything to do with buying a home. They know the ins and outs of it all and can increase your odds of finding the perfect home. Also, keep in mind that they have access to the MLS which allows them to view homes that are going on sale before they’re listed to the public. I’m a first time home buyer and this is all the advice I’ve been given thus far and it makes a lot of sense. I’m meeting with someone tomorrow and I can come back here and give you updates on how it went. Feel free to DM me. Edit: typo

I've known this guy since I was 10 years old, and he helped sell my house in 2020. He's tenacious and constantly in contact with his clients. Overall a great guy, and handles everything, making this stressful process a little easier to manage. https://www.coldwellbanker.com/ny/liverpool/agents/christopher-phillips/aid-P00200000FDdskCOUXtx40tmhGQjMRJoOHzx4pkM
