Yeah I play kazuya and dragunov and I either get people complaining about kazuyas 50/50 or dragunov for the +frames even in tekken 7 after dragunov got hit with nerf hammer.
In all honesty this is across the board. I normally main grapplers because I like the play style and people bitch about Potemkin in strive who is regarded as a trash character by the pros.
I’ve been a long time drag player (Bushin rn) who just picked up DJ and Kazuya (I got Kuma to mighty ruler but didn’t really enjoy him).
I’m still a tierwhore and meta abuser. Idc if they’re strong or weak or whatever, I just enjoy their kit and I like the character.
Yeah I mean tekken has some good ass characterisation with the attacks of the character. Most of the moves barring like standard jabs and the like breathe life into these guys. Drag with his like back1+2 and wr2 are so clean. Even characters that share moves are so different like heihachi and kazuya from previous games. Even though it’s the same style and they have access to a few of the same moves they play totally different.
In all honesty not a single character in this game feels overbearing and most of the cast have exploitable weaknesses. I think a lot of the hate comes from kinda newer players due to just how much of a knowledge check most of the game is.
Learning to block and punish snake edges, knowing not to challenge after being hit by wr2 from drag, knowing that you sidestep left on kaz, knowing what strings to duck. It’s all knowledge you need to gain by playing the game and it feels cheap when you don’t know…
After learning that Josie wouldn't be in 8 (at least for now) I decided to get into Xiaoyu, played her through the last 6 or so months of Tekken 7 and it was very weird going from people asking me why I play Xiaoyu because she sucks to why I tier whore with Xiaoyu lol

Hard to hate on Lee. You might juggle me for half the round but damage of that combo still seems unfair for you, considering all the work you need to put in.
it’s because of the tornado changes at the wall, so the timing for it has changed slightly, this is anecdotal but the wall ender has been quite consistent for me.
That’s a common thing to say about Lee in past games but in t8 that’s fake news. In fact, since he can get guaranteed d3 in a lot more places midscreen his dmg is better than most if you have the execution.
In T8 he does big damage just like everyone else.
1 mistake = launched, taken to wall no matter how far away, then you have to deal with a mix up for the remainder of your health.
All that work for a measly 50-60 damage :( Honestly I feel like the game will be more fun if every character got their combo damage nerfed to around Lee's level

Fighting game grappler player here. King was an easy pick for me. Grappler, Mexican (I’m Mexican), luchador, does it for the kids back home. What wasn’t to love. Started off in ttt2 where I played king and Jun because I loved how both of them felt. After years of no Jun I stuck with king all the way. I’m used to getting hate because the fgc doesn’t like grapplers so this was nothing new to me. But Jun? I guess I can understand but now that my two favorite characters are back I’m just happy to play again. Hate on me all you want, you’re gonna get muscle bustered or hit by a b3

Lol I had to fight uphill both ways to get Lili to Fujin. Lars was much easier. And now with Dragunov I'm almost at Purple Ranks and it's been a breeze. With Jin I feel like I have to play epic Tekken to win even in Red. With Drag you land like 1-2 launchers, that's the round
My point is don’t hate Dragunov mains for that, hate the game. Besides, the key point to you ranking up so shortly with Dragunov is you have nearly every character to mighty ruler, so ranking up is already going to be much easier in general. Dragunov is challenging for me coming from reaching red ranks for the first time in Tekken 8. Talk about fundamental issues instead of anecdotes.
We'll we don't know in what order ranked them up to mighty ruler. He might've used him first and found other characters harder, or he might've used him last. Dragunov is powerful and there's nothing wrong with pointing it out. But there is nothing wrong with using him since he is there to be played.
Play who you have fun with. In the end, it's always fun to win. It's also fine to complain about characters who put you in a blender that takes 1000x more skill to defend against than to pull off. All these can exist at the same time and no one's wrong.
I wholeheartedly agree. Players seem to blame other players for playing a character that is in the game they bought... Which is stupid.
The player didn't make their character OP, the devs did. The devs gave that character broken tools and Almost no counterplay and are spending their time making battlepass and shops instead of fixing things. The devs are the problem, not the players.
I play Zafina, sometimes with only her TRT stance. People don't like me when I'm crawling around for 99% of the game but I LOVE IT. Getting a W solely using TRT is the best high on this planet.
The more annoying is a character the more fun I have. You can continue to cry in your corner of self delusion if you think you are better than someone only because you are using "honest characters". Then again, T8 is streamlined and most of the cast is easier than ever to play, even your beloved Kaz and Jin. Every hate letter is a trophy.

Alisa isn't even that "dishonest". She's mostly straightforward with a couple of gimmicks, there's tons of characters out there who are much more scummy.
Still, it's satisfying rocket-kicking people in the face at mach speeds and making them rage quit lol

In terms of animations designed to prompt the wrong reaction, I'd say Alisa is one of, if not the, most dishonest character in the game.
In terms of fairness? She's fine. Her combo damage is a bit high but she's got no better mix than Kazuya really. Just the two plus on block chainsaws that can be neutered with dick jab.
I don't even play Alisa but their players get way too much hate. One of the most fun characters to play against imo. Never felt like i got robbed/cheesed to death. Only thing that's insane is her chainsaw chip dmg but i don't mind that as it gives the player an incentive to use DES more which is generally not hard to interrupt. Outside of that i find her very honest. Although i do have an advantage bc i know the matchup pretty well.
There are far worse characters to play against.
Remember, to most internet whiners only their main is "honest" and everyone else is either OP or a gimmick. Its all about deflecting blame on their lack of growth onto anything but themselves.
I’m a street fighter guy and I’ve been saying to my friends that I’ll play tekken once they bring back Jun purely out of loyalty for many many years. Characters themselves are more important to me than their gameplan. Harada finally did it but now I don’t won’t to go online because of all the harassement and shit talking about her. Even TMM says that she’s brain dead and we don’t even understand why we win with her, mixing in something about brainrot and similar stuff.
The game’s core is about 50/50, it’s built around throwing dice. Even in neutral without any set ups it’s either unreactible low or mid, don’t even get me started on most grabs. How come we’ve reached to a point where people complain about having to block stuff, like Jun’s heat smash. Yes, there are things that require you to chill and hold back for a moment, this is a fighting game. I would refrain from heat entirely but some moves that I like using in neutral activate it automatically.
So I comma to play a game and I have funna but then you say peace on you when i don’t even know you so I say no peace on you imma go back to Italia (street fighter).
TMM is fun to listen to but who cares about his comments on characters. If it were for him Tekken would only have 5 characters, cos the rest are for braindead players, according to him.
I play Jun and I prefer not to listen to what players hate about her moves. I can guess, but I still prefer to play like I feel it's most efficient, cos I see others do the same, so why should I censor myself or go play Kazuya?
I have dropped characters that I loved and was good at because they were "OP" or "braindead" or whatever, and then I struggled with "honest" characters that I didn't really like in order to somehow please a community of people that I don't even know personally. Nowadays I will only play characters that vibe with me, tiers and opinions be damned.
To be fair when it comes to Leo the hate goes to their identity rather than their gameplay, because God forbid gender fluid people exist in a world where the scariest thing about a bear is its ability to do EWGF.
Tekken has a lot of character complaining unfortunately, but it is what it is. Play whoever you think is cool. I picked up Kuma, after mostly playing Jun, and thought I was safe but people complain about the bears too. 😆

Tekken is a very "don't hate the player, hate the game" kinda thing, so if people play the game all the time and constantly bitch about characters, fuck em. Trying to take the "honorable" route and play characters that potentially make it harder for you to win is a huge waste of time.

I think a big problem in this is just the way the game is designed as a whole. Most characters have some pretty insane tools, like Dragunov jailing you, Lily and Alisa being evasive af, lots of new easy but oppressive strings...
And the the worst part is everyone gets these tools. Characters had their uniqueness nerfed out of them in favor of homogenizing them. Everyone gets a strong 50/50, everyone gets powerful evasive launchers, everyone gets oppressive and stunning strings, everyone gets a full grab game, everyone gets insane CH launchers, everything. Of course there are some exceptions, but this is true for almost everyone.
And every character was simplified, which I don't disagree with, but some of the decisions made are kinda baffling... Like Jin getting d2, which essentially does both the jobs of db3 and d3 at the same time, maybe even better in some cases. Or some characters liek Victor and Eddy getting 1 button combos with decent damage and wall carry...
There are only few characters, that didn't receive this treatment, the ones I know of are Zafina (but who plays her anyway?), Leroy (nerfed to the ground) and Steve (was left behind and as a result only his safeness remains an advantage). When I tried out different characters from Steve and found out Victor has not one, but two safe mid CH launchers, one of which is faster than Steve's b1? Or Eddy having a similar CH launcher now too? So the CH paragon actually has not only worse combo damage to capitalize on, but also gets worse CH options than other allrounders?
My point is, most characters feel the same. And when the default template for characters can do everything, and be annoying, then most characters will be annoying. It also doesn't help, that T8's general game design is frustrating to lose in by nature. You get punished for attacking in late rounds due to Rage, combos are very long winded and extremely damaging, the evasive nature of modern Tekken is just not very fun to lose to and the wonky hitboxes don't really help its case either. Don't get me wrong, I love Tekken, but modern Tekken is indeed a frustrating game to lose in and I'm not surprised the community is as toxic and butthurt as it is...

I've been playing Eddy for a decade now. If I had a dollar for every piece of hate mail, rage quit and ki charge I've ever gotten, I could probably use it to cover my mortgage for a month or two
This game hits peoples insecurities very hard. When they lose, they don't want to blame themselves or their skills. They want to deflect outwards instead of accepting that they may not be as good as they led themselves to believe. I got hatemail recently after being plugged on by a Lili because I was "trying too hard". Got called "sweaty", told I actually sucked, and they weren't taking it seriously. All of that because I kept low parrying the same move over and over again.
Its never the players fault that they lose in this game. Its Dragunovs fault. Or Alisas fault. Or Ravens fault. Its the balancing, or the side walls, or their controller, or spam, or throw break windows, or weird hitboxes, or opponents with leverless controllers, or chain throws, or their characters lack of reach, etc. Tekken fans losing in a video game fucks with their ego so badly that they will actually become hateful, miserable keyboard warriors who will throw insults and threats at complete strangers from behind a screen.
Tekken is the definition of "with friends like these, who needs enemies?". Pick who you want. This community will hate you for anything you do anyway
How to hate Jack? I even forget he's in the game. I probably faced 1 or 2 Jacks in my rank experience so far. I kinda miss him. It's quite fun to look at and his winning animation when he falls down punching his own chest makes me laugh every time.
Jack is my kryptonite, but the only Jack's I've hated playing vs. were the three random Nazi outfit Jack's I actively ki charged on and one and doned

I mean, let's be honest, who has never complained about or trashed any character ever? As the saying goes, let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
That being said, personally speaking, even though I try to avoid trashing characters too much, on the occasions I've done it, it was never meant to disencourage people who like those characters from playing them or to make people who main them feel bad. I was just venting my frustrations or expressing my personal dislike for the gameplay design/balancing of that character. So no one should take it personally, and no one should give a shit about what I or anyone else thinks or says about their main.
Like, I'm a Lili main and I've literally been told in twitch chats that I should "die along with all other Lili mains". But I just laughed it off and told that person their tears were delicious and captivant and kept playing Lili. Now of course this is an extreme example and telling someone they should die for the character they play is deranged and I've never done such a thing. I have, however, said things like "Victor and Azucena are two of the worst Tekken newcomers ever" because I don't enjoy fighting against them. But if you enjoy playing Victor or Azucena, then by all means continue to do so. You bought the game; it's your right to use them and have fun with them. I may disapprove of the character you're playing, but I will defend to the death your right to play them.
So yeah, basically, no one should take character trashing personally, and no one should stop playing a character they enjoy based on other people's opinion of said character. Just have fun with the character you like. If other people don't like that character, that's their problem, not yours.

When I was new to this subreddit, I felt awful for maining Alisa. So I started practicing with Jun, found out she’s despised too.
And sure, I have my bias, but why hate on a player’s abilities? It takes skill and practice to execute elaborate strings, even if they’re repetitive. Of course there’ll be the occasional spammer, but if they’re able to successfully land their hits on your character, it becomes a *you* problem. There are ways to get better if the initiative is taken.
This game is fun. Far from perfect, but fun.

Doesn’t mean that you’re a bad player or that you deserve to get hated on, some characters simply aren’t as difficult to pilot as others.
I main Claudio and Victor. I also play Shaheen. If Fahkumram returns, I will definitely play him. Claudio is rarely hated, though some Lili players hate Claudio. Victor is heavily hated and I like making players salty by ending the round with Victor's gun (QCF+2) from long range, mostly after the rage art. Finally, people always bash Shaheen and the Fahkumram hate is mostly from the Bruce mains and fans, especially those who are on the Bruce copium
As someone who mains Asuka and Jun since I gravitate towards the Kazama fighting style I recently learned to accept this. I play Asuka and people say she's Bottom 10 or even Bottom 5 and "just play Jun". And if I play Jun people will say I'm carried cause she's too OP, so I'm just going to do me. It's also funny cause I plan to play Eddy as well since I always loved playing both him and Christie but people are already saying he looks OP as well.

Every character has something that makes them unique. Ling has AOP and has always been the evasive character, Yoshi has Flash and a bunch of other tricks, Hwoarang has crazy pressure, no one has a mixup bag quite like Kazuya, & Victor is a Tekken training wheels character. Play who you like, talk your shit but have fun most importantly.
Been playing Eddy in every game he’s in, although T7 was the first time I tried to learn to play correctly, and im a little annoyed that they gave him the “mash 3” combo, I get discredited all of the time regardless of whether I use my real route or not lol

Literally what happens to me when I pick Eddy in any Tekken game. I just think Capoeira is a cool looking fighting style and his combos are fun. Especially in 7 despite being bad in that game.

I hate it when people use quote unquote honest and quote unquote brain dead as if it's all subjective and it's impossible for developers to make a character busted.

He’s pretty annoying to deal with, if you don’t know where his openings are. His barrage of strings that always have a low in there somewhere and plus on block moves can be very frustrating to deal with, in addition, most of his moves are kicks and in the heat of the moment it can be hard to tell his moves apart. At least those are the things i used to struggle with.

Everyone has problem characters, it’s different for everyone so they are going to share their opinion. For example I find Hwoarang, Xiaoyu, Alisa and Azu extremely frustrating however characters like Drag, Feng, Reina and Jun don’t really bother me. It’s when people try to say their opinion is fact, is the point it becomes a problem. I’m not gonna shame you for playing who makes you happy, I know people can be extremely frustrated with Lars too so when people vent about what they find annoying about him I try to give my best advice to overcome it. But if they don’t want to learn the tech it’s their own damn fault.
In team games, most folks will bitch about their teammates and ignore their own play when their team loses. It's easier than self-reflection and putting in the work to actually getting better.
In 1v1 games people will latch on to "anything" to deflect the blame for their loss and to justify their feeling upset and angry. They know it's petty, pathetic, and childlike to bitch and moan about losing so they pick "anything" else to lash out at, reaching for anything to justify how they feel and to deflect the blame away from themselves. Doing that is much easier than self-reflection and putting in the work to actually get better.
I am a King player who started in T7. I am nowhere near good, I am only red rank. Yet, I should have no rights, my family should disown me and I should hang myself with an HDMI cable because I play King.

Obviously the game will be unbalanced in some aspects because it's new. Not reason to shit on the devs, give them time. People don't hate your characters because they're op, they hate them because they lose to them.
I decided to have some silly fun playing Kuma the other day. God was it a Wakeup call about how easy it is to win with cheesy characters.
It took me a couple months to get Shaheen, Paul and Jack to blue ranks (1.5 months actually) but with Kuma I did it in a couple days.

A lot of the hate is a reflection of how poorly people know their match ups. Especially with characters who have been in Tekken since the early days. I’m a Bear main, they’ve been in Tekken since Tekken 1. I don’t want to hear “Nobody likes bears because nobody knows the matchup.” How many more decades do you need to learn the matchups of characters who have been in the series for 20+ years?!

I play Jun because I've been playing since Tekken 2, and was just happy she's back in the roster. Otherwise, I don't know who I would play as since Josie is not part of the roster this time around.
And as for getting shit on... I lost 25 times to my friend. Was it terrible? Oh, yes. Yet, we still laugh about it. Now I tell them, instead of 25, I will get a sub once and then get shit on for the rest of the time.
I love post like this because this is a really major problem in this community. People love to try to justify why they lose and try to have this honor/honest system mentality when in reality it’s just them coping from losing to a character that they don’t know the match up. I learned these past few months playing Tekken is not to please others because that’s gonna ruin my fun of the game I love my characters I play and I will never let anyone try to ruin my perception of them. It’s more of a them problem for not learning the game mechanics or match ups. We need more post like this thank your for addressing this issue! Have fun no matter who you play. Tekken is not about people pleasing it’s about having fun with the character you enjoy and learning all the match ups for every character in the game. Losing just comes with the Tekken experience and eventually the more you lose to a character the more knowledge you get on how to beat them.
I came back to Tekken 8 after many many years away from the franchise and just wanted a clean slate so thought it would be cool to try one of the new characters. I picked up Victor on release day and knew absolutely nothing about him beyond what he looked like.
Now it’s like any time I win it’s because I’m “carried”, using a “cheap” character, etc. etc. Apparently the countless hours I’ve put into actually trying to master this character, grinding ranked, working on tekken fundamentals, etc. are all for naught because I’m just a Victor scrub who wants to use a “cheap” character. At a certain point I just learned to tune all the hater bullshit and have fun while playing my way. Your post is refreshing because people just love to complain but the fact is that every single character in this game has abusable bullshit. Even the most “honest” character. The whole honest vs. dishonest thing is bullshit too.

I played Gigas and Ganryu mostly in T7. Was sad to see neither in 8. Picked up the Bears and Jack. This time, I'm gonna spend a decent amount of time with each character. Don't care what people say about them.

I always play/try different characters in SF and Tekken, as long as I like the character, I play it, zero fucks given about tiers.
Aside from Julia in Tekken, and Chun-li in Street Fighter, I always play/try different characters every title. Now in T8 I'm playing Jun, Jin, and Yoshimitsu; Chun-li, Juri, and Ryu in SF6.

I feel you, I started maining hwoarang because he looks cool and I find taekwando interesting and fun to use. Only later did I also find out that he's considered annoying and spammy. Doesn't feel as good playing him now. Though I still main him because I still like him the most.

SF6 was my first non-platform fighting game, so I went with Modern controls and chose Manon because I loved her moves and aesthetic. Got to platinum rank and loved every minute of it, but it turned out that Modern grapplers were a scourge in the community, so I switched to Kimberly. It wasn't as fun, and I ended up quitting with 100 hours in the game because Modern was so hated and it felt like my wins were illegitimate.
I thought T8 looked cool, so I picked it up and chose Azucena after trying most characters, but apparently she's hated too. After 125 hours and reaching Fujin, I decided I'd pick up a secondary to see if my rank was solely from playing a new, gimmicky character. I thought Eddy looked fun because capoeira is awesome, so I waited for him to release. Hit the same rank, but it turns out he's even more hated and my wins feel even worse with him sometimes.
I totally get the criticisms, especially with Eddy, but I guess I've just been unlucky with my choices. I'm probably gonna pick up Lili to prove to myself that I'm not being carried by "broken" and "braindead" S-tier characters, but I've decided I'm not going to stop playing Azu and Eddy. This is the most I've ever enjoyed a fighting game and I won't let community complaints ruin that for me. I'll just try to really learn the fundamentals so that I won't be stuck when balance changes happen.
I've strictly played Kazuya since T4. I also strictly avoided online play until T8 mostly due to nerves in a 1v1 environment.
I started T8 as Kazuya, he didn't feel bad by any means, but I'm no expert and found it hard to punish with anything but 112. 30% winrate lol I'm fine with that.
Switch to Feng (never played him) and start getting hatemail in yellow ranks... yellow ranks......
There's a lot to this game, whether you're getting snake edged by Feng, 50/50d by Kazuya or mixed up by Lili, I suppose I will never be playing "honest" tekken and I'm now fine with that.

Yeah I play kazuya and dragunov and I either get people complaining about kazuyas 50/50 or dragunov for the +frames even in tekken 7 after dragunov got hit with nerf hammer. In all honesty this is across the board. I normally main grapplers because I like the play style and people bitch about Potemkin in strive who is regarded as a trash character by the pros.
I’ve been a long time drag player (Bushin rn) who just picked up DJ and Kazuya (I got Kuma to mighty ruler but didn’t really enjoy him). I’m still a tierwhore and meta abuser. Idc if they’re strong or weak or whatever, I just enjoy their kit and I like the character.
Yeah I mean tekken has some good ass characterisation with the attacks of the character. Most of the moves barring like standard jabs and the like breathe life into these guys. Drag with his like back1+2 and wr2 are so clean. Even characters that share moves are so different like heihachi and kazuya from previous games. Even though it’s the same style and they have access to a few of the same moves they play totally different. In all honesty not a single character in this game feels overbearing and most of the cast have exploitable weaknesses. I think a lot of the hate comes from kinda newer players due to just how much of a knowledge check most of the game is. Learning to block and punish snake edges, knowing not to challenge after being hit by wr2 from drag, knowing that you sidestep left on kaz, knowing what strings to duck. It’s all knowledge you need to gain by playing the game and it feels cheap when you don’t know…

yea hes wall carry is good. But they nerfed lee in the latest patch. The HMN U4, UB3 doesn't work like half the time
it’s because of the tornado changes at the wall, so the timing for it has changed slightly, this is anecdotal but the wall ender has been quite consistent for me.

That’s a common thing to say about Lee in past games but in t8 that’s fake news. In fact, since he can get guaranteed d3 in a lot more places midscreen his dmg is better than most if you have the execution.
In T8 he does big damage just like everyone else. 1 mistake = launched, taken to wall no matter how far away, then you have to deal with a mix up for the remainder of your health.
All that work for a measly 50-60 damage :( Honestly I feel like the game will be more fun if every character got their combo damage nerfed to around Lee's level

Lee main since Tekken 7. He is much easier than in t7 and the damages are some of the best of the games. Game-plan is still a work of art tho.

Fighting game grappler player here. King was an easy pick for me. Grappler, Mexican (I’m Mexican), luchador, does it for the kids back home. What wasn’t to love. Started off in ttt2 where I played king and Jun because I loved how both of them felt. After years of no Jun I stuck with king all the way. I’m used to getting hate because the fgc doesn’t like grapplers so this was nothing new to me. But Jun? I guess I can understand but now that my two favorite characters are back I’m just happy to play again. Hate on me all you want, you’re gonna get muscle bustered or hit by a b3

Lol I had to fight uphill both ways to get Lili to Fujin. Lars was much easier. And now with Dragunov I'm almost at Purple Ranks and it's been a breeze. With Jin I feel like I have to play epic Tekken to win even in Red. With Drag you land like 1-2 launchers, that's the round
My point is don’t hate Dragunov mains for that, hate the game. Besides, the key point to you ranking up so shortly with Dragunov is you have nearly every character to mighty ruler, so ranking up is already going to be much easier in general. Dragunov is challenging for me coming from reaching red ranks for the first time in Tekken 8. Talk about fundamental issues instead of anecdotes.
We'll we don't know in what order ranked them up to mighty ruler. He might've used him first and found other characters harder, or he might've used him last. Dragunov is powerful and there's nothing wrong with pointing it out. But there is nothing wrong with using him since he is there to be played.

Play who you have fun with. In the end, it's always fun to win. It's also fine to complain about characters who put you in a blender that takes 1000x more skill to defend against than to pull off. All these can exist at the same time and no one's wrong.
I wholeheartedly agree. Players seem to blame other players for playing a character that is in the game they bought... Which is stupid. The player didn't make their character OP, the devs did. The devs gave that character broken tools and Almost no counterplay and are spending their time making battlepass and shops instead of fixing things. The devs are the problem, not the players.

Alisa isn't even that "dishonest". She's mostly straightforward with a couple of gimmicks, there's tons of characters out there who are much more scummy. Still, it's satisfying rocket-kicking people in the face at mach speeds and making them rage quit lol
Depends on your view of honesty. In terms of animations designed to prompt the wrong reaction, I'd say Alisa is one of, if not the, most dishonest character in the game. In terms of fairness? She's fine. Her combo damage is a bit high but she's got no better mix than Kazuya really. Just the two plus on block chainsaws that can be neutered with dick jab.
I don't even play Alisa but their players get way too much hate. One of the most fun characters to play against imo. Never felt like i got robbed/cheesed to death. Only thing that's insane is her chainsaw chip dmg but i don't mind that as it gives the player an incentive to use DES more which is generally not hard to interrupt. Outside of that i find her very honest. Although i do have an advantage bc i know the matchup pretty well. There are far worse characters to play against.

I’m a street fighter guy and I’ve been saying to my friends that I’ll play tekken once they bring back Jun purely out of loyalty for many many years. Characters themselves are more important to me than their gameplan. Harada finally did it but now I don’t won’t to go online because of all the harassement and shit talking about her. Even TMM says that she’s brain dead and we don’t even understand why we win with her, mixing in something about brainrot and similar stuff. The game’s core is about 50/50, it’s built around throwing dice. Even in neutral without any set ups it’s either unreactible low or mid, don’t even get me started on most grabs. How come we’ve reached to a point where people complain about having to block stuff, like Jun’s heat smash. Yes, there are things that require you to chill and hold back for a moment, this is a fighting game. I would refrain from heat entirely but some moves that I like using in neutral activate it automatically. So I comma to play a game and I have funna but then you say peace on you when i don’t even know you so I say no peace on you imma go back to Italia (street fighter).
TMM is fun to listen to but who cares about his comments on characters. If it were for him Tekken would only have 5 characters, cos the rest are for braindead players, according to him. I play Jun and I prefer not to listen to what players hate about her moves. I can guess, but I still prefer to play like I feel it's most efficient, cos I see others do the same, so why should I censor myself or go play Kazuya?

I have dropped characters that I loved and was good at because they were "OP" or "braindead" or whatever, and then I struggled with "honest" characters that I didn't really like in order to somehow please a community of people that I don't even know personally. Yeah, you just need to play who you want and not give a fuck. Tekken is a very "don't hate the player, hate the game" kinda thing, so if people play the game all the time and constantly bitch about characters, fuck em. Trying to take the "honorable" route and play characters that potentially make it harder for you to win is a huge waste of time.
As a Hwoarang main, I have lots of fun playing with him, come on here and I see people just hate him with a passion and I was like... uh okay And I still play with him, couldn't care less what people on the Internet complain about. They complain about "heat" "rage" and everything else in this game so fuck'em.
I think a big problem in this is just the way the game is designed as a whole. Most characters have some pretty insane tools, like Dragunov jailing you, Lily and Alisa being evasive af, lots of new easy but oppressive strings... And the the worst part is everyone gets these tools. Characters had their uniqueness nerfed out of them in favor of homogenizing them. Everyone gets a strong 50/50, everyone gets powerful evasive launchers, everyone gets oppressive and stunning strings, everyone gets a full grab game, everyone gets insane CH launchers, everything. Of course there are some exceptions, but this is true for almost everyone. And every character was simplified, which I don't disagree with, but some of the decisions made are kinda baffling... Like Jin getting d2, which essentially does both the jobs of db3 and d3 at the same time, maybe even better in some cases. Or some characters liek Victor and Eddy getting 1 button combos with decent damage and wall carry... There are only few characters, that didn't receive this treatment, the ones I know of are Zafina (but who plays her anyway?), Leroy (nerfed to the ground) and Steve (was left behind and as a result only his safeness remains an advantage). When I tried out different characters from Steve and found out Victor has not one, but two safe mid CH launchers, one of which is faster than Steve's b1? Or Eddy having a similar CH launcher now too? So the CH paragon actually has not only worse combo damage to capitalize on, but also gets worse CH options than other allrounders? My point is, most characters feel the same. And when the default template for characters can do everything, and be annoying, then most characters will be annoying. It also doesn't help, that T8's general game design is frustrating to lose in by nature. You get punished for attacking in late rounds due to Rage, combos are very long winded and extremely damaging, the evasive nature of modern Tekken is just not very fun to lose to and the wonky hitboxes don't really help its case either. Don't get me wrong, I love Tekken, but modern Tekken is indeed a frustrating game to lose in and I'm not surprised the community is as toxic and butthurt as it is...
OP there’s a lot going on in your post. I won’t get into why I believe it’s one of the most dishonest posts ever. But… I would suggest not putting so much weight on what others might think about you. Especially if it’s regarding a video game. Play the game however you want, without letting what other people say get in the way of your enjoyment. It’s just a game at the end of the day.
Having people complain about your character or rib you over it was always something you would just laugh off. I imagine the people who get too emotional over what people post online get way too salty themselves.
I've been playing Eddy for a decade now. If I had a dollar for every piece of hate mail, rage quit and ki charge I've ever gotten, I could probably use it to cover my mortgage for a month or two
This game hits peoples insecurities very hard. When they lose, they don't want to blame themselves or their skills. They want to deflect outwards instead of accepting that they may not be as good as they led themselves to believe. I got hatemail recently after being plugged on by a Lili because I was "trying too hard". Got called "sweaty", told I actually sucked, and they weren't taking it seriously. All of that because I kept low parrying the same move over and over again. Its never the players fault that they lose in this game. Its Dragunovs fault. Or Alisas fault. Or Ravens fault. Its the balancing, or the side walls, or their controller, or spam, or throw break windows, or weird hitboxes, or opponents with leverless controllers, or chain throws, or their characters lack of reach, etc. Tekken fans losing in a video game fucks with their ego so badly that they will actually become hateful, miserable keyboard warriors who will throw insults and threats at complete strangers from behind a screen. Tekken is the definition of "with friends like these, who needs enemies?". Pick who you want. This community will hate you for anything you do anyway

I mean, let's be honest, who has never complained about or trashed any character ever? As the saying goes, let he who is without sin cast the first stone. That being said, personally speaking, even though I try to avoid trashing characters too much, on the occasions I've done it, it was never meant to disencourage people who like those characters from playing them or to make people who main them feel bad. I was just venting my frustrations or expressing my personal dislike for the gameplay design/balancing of that character. So no one should take it personally, and no one should give a shit about what I or anyone else thinks or says about their main. Like, I'm a Lili main and I've literally been told in twitch chats that I should "die along with all other Lili mains". But I just laughed it off and told that person their tears were delicious and captivant and kept playing Lili. Now of course this is an extreme example and telling someone they should die for the character they play is deranged and I've never done such a thing. I have, however, said things like "Victor and Azucena are two of the worst Tekken newcomers ever" because I don't enjoy fighting against them. But if you enjoy playing Victor or Azucena, then by all means continue to do so. You bought the game; it's your right to use them and have fun with them. I may disapprove of the character you're playing, but I will defend to the death your right to play them. So yeah, basically, no one should take character trashing personally, and no one should stop playing a character they enjoy based on other people's opinion of said character. Just have fun with the character you like. If other people don't like that character, that's their problem, not yours.

I believe people have the right to vent about character balance as it shows the dev team more work is needed. However this post is still good. The harsh reality/truth is unless both players mirror match and use the same exact controller setups you won't ever get a 💯% fair fight. That sounds bad on paper but truthfully do we just want to watch 2 players trading to the draw?

When I was new to this subreddit, I felt awful for maining Alisa. So I started practicing with Jun, found out she’s despised too. And sure, I have my bias, but why hate on a player’s abilities? It takes skill and practice to execute elaborate strings, even if they’re repetitive. Of course there’ll be the occasional spammer, but if they’re able to successfully land their hits on your character, it becomes a *you* problem. There are ways to get better if the initiative is taken. This game is fun. Far from perfect, but fun.

Like don’t get me wrong, absolutely play whoever you want, people who hate on you for the character you play are bitches, but that doesn’t mean you have to pretend that Jun or Alisa aren’t piss easy to play. Doesn’t mean that you’re a bad player or that you deserve to get hated on, some characters simply aren’t as difficult to pilot as others.

I main Claudio and Victor. I also play Shaheen. If Fahkumram returns, I will definitely play him. Claudio is rarely hated, though some Lili players hate Claudio. Victor is heavily hated and I like making players salty by ending the round with Victor's gun (QCF+2) from long range, mostly after the rage art. Finally, people always bash Shaheen and the Fahkumram hate is mostly from the Bruce mains and fans, especially those who are on the Bruce copium
As someone who mains Asuka and Jun since I gravitate towards the Kazama fighting style I recently learned to accept this. I play Asuka and people say she's Bottom 10 or even Bottom 5 and "just play Jun". And if I play Jun people will say I'm carried cause she's too OP, so I'm just going to do me. It's also funny cause I plan to play Eddy as well since I always loved playing both him and Christie but people are already saying he looks OP as well.

Ling has AOP and has always been the evasive character, Yoshi has Flash and a bunch of other tricks, Hwoarang has crazy pressure, no one has a mixup bag quite like Kazuya, & Victor is a Tekken training wheels character. Play who you like, talk your shit but have fun most importantly.
Been playing Eddy in every game he’s in, although T7 was the first time I tried to learn to play correctly, and im a little annoyed that they gave him the “mash 3” combo, I get discredited all of the time regardless of whether I use my real route or not lol but im still gonna play my silly dance fight man

Literally what happens to me when I pick Eddy in any Tekken game. I just think Capoeira is a cool looking fighting style and his combos are fun. Especially in 7 despite being bad in that game.
Only issue with drag is that sneak 4 being a fucking war crime. God it feels so inconsistent to side step.

He’s pretty annoying to deal with, if you don’t know where his openings are. His barrage of strings that always have a low in there somewhere and plus on block moves can be very frustrating to deal with, in addition, most of his moves are kicks and in the heat of the moment it can be hard to tell his moves apart. At least those are the things i used to struggle with.

Everyone has problem characters, it’s different for everyone so they are going to share their opinion. For example I find Hwoarang, Xiaoyu, Alisa and Azu extremely frustrating however characters like Drag, Feng, Reina and Jun don’t really bother me. It’s when people try to say their opinion is fact, is the point it becomes a problem. I’m not gonna shame you for playing who makes you happy, I know people can be extremely frustrated with Lars too so when people vent about what they find annoying about him I try to give my best advice to overcome it. But if they don’t want to learn the tech it’s their own damn fault.

In team games, most folks will bitch about their teammates and ignore their own play when their team loses. It's easier than self-reflection and putting in the work to actually getting better. In 1v1 games people will latch on to "anything" to deflect the blame for their loss and to justify their feeling upset and angry. They know it's petty, pathetic, and childlike to bitch and moan about losing so they pick "anything" else to lash out at, reaching for anything to justify how they feel and to deflect the blame away from themselves. Doing that is much easier than self-reflection and putting in the work to actually get better.
I am a King player who started in T7. I am nowhere near good, I am only red rank. Yet, I should have no rights, my family should disown me and I should hang myself with an HDMI cable because I play King.

I decided to have some silly fun playing Kuma the other day. God was it a Wakeup call about how easy it is to win with cheesy characters. It took me a couple months to get Shaheen, Paul and Jack to blue ranks (1.5 months actually) but with Kuma I did it in a couple days. Nobody knows what to do and his combo damage is nuts

A lot of the hate is a reflection of how poorly people know their match ups. Especially with characters who have been in Tekken since the early days. I’m a Bear main, they’ve been in Tekken since Tekken 1. I don’t want to hear “Nobody likes bears because nobody knows the matchup.” How many more decades do you need to learn the matchups of characters who have been in the series for 20+ years?!
You know what dude. I get it. Part of playing tekken is seeing some characteristic that resonates with the character you choose. I main Paul. I’ve given him the bread head and just pants look and I think he looks crazy fun. I charge and use ten hit combos and heat smash and I LOVE playing him. I don’t even let anyone else have a look in. I read someone else skating Paul as a main and it hurt. Then I looked at him. And that face. That stupid grin. That arrogance. And I thought. Would he give a shit what people think? And he absolutely wouldn’t. So I embrace it. I’m Paul and I’m gonna smash you up. Peace.
I play Jun because I've been playing since Tekken 2, and was just happy she's back in the roster. Otherwise, I don't know who I would play as since Josie is not part of the roster this time around. And as for getting shit on... I lost 25 times to my friend. Was it terrible? Oh, yes. Yet, we still laugh about it. Now I tell them, instead of 25, I will get a sub once and then get shit on for the rest of the time.
I love post like this because this is a really major problem in this community. People love to try to justify why they lose and try to have this honor/honest system mentality when in reality it’s just them coping from losing to a character that they don’t know the match up. I learned these past few months playing Tekken is not to please others because that’s gonna ruin my fun of the game I love my characters I play and I will never let anyone try to ruin my perception of them. It’s more of a them problem for not learning the game mechanics or match ups. We need more post like this thank your for addressing this issue! Have fun no matter who you play. Tekken is not about people pleasing it’s about having fun with the character you enjoy and learning all the match ups for every character in the game. Losing just comes with the Tekken experience and eventually the more you lose to a character the more knowledge you get on how to beat them.
I came back to Tekken 8 after many many years away from the franchise and just wanted a clean slate so thought it would be cool to try one of the new characters. I picked up Victor on release day and knew absolutely nothing about him beyond what he looked like. Now it’s like any time I win it’s because I’m “carried”, using a “cheap” character, etc. etc. Apparently the countless hours I’ve put into actually trying to master this character, grinding ranked, working on tekken fundamentals, etc. are all for naught because I’m just a Victor scrub who wants to use a “cheap” character. At a certain point I just learned to tune all the hater bullshit and have fun while playing my way. Your post is refreshing because people just love to complain but the fact is that every single character in this game has abusable bullshit. Even the most “honest” character. The whole honest vs. dishonest thing is bullshit too. Just play who you want and fuck the haters.
The only mains that I see complain the most from twitch streamers are salty kazuya players. Tbh I find them hilarious, thinking they have the “honest” character and play much better. Imagine going to a tourney , pick kazuya , opponent beat you and you say, yeah but I play much better than you :D

I played Gigas and Ganryu mostly in T7. Was sad to see neither in 8. Picked up the Bears and Jack. This time, I'm gonna spend a decent amount of time with each character. Don't care what people say about them.
I know, Tekken online is full of bitches. It's a video game, but some people take it too seriously. I always play/try different characters in SF and Tekken, as long as I like the character, I play it, zero fucks given about tiers. Aside from Julia in Tekken, and Chun-li in Street Fighter, I always play/try different characters every title. Now in T8 I'm playing Jun, Jin, and Yoshimitsu; Chun-li, Juri, and Ryu in SF6. Unfortunately many manchildren online, who aren't even very good at the game themselves, believe that you shouldn't have fun, you are supposed to punch the desk and be mad at pixels like they do lol
Feels strange playing Eddy. I mained him in 7 and while people hated him, no one really played him. He was trash tier but still got free wins because no one knows the matchup. Now in 8 he's pretty good, not busted but definitely mid tier. Feels like the vitriol for this character is at an all new time high. Will it die down? I think so. People seem to drop him before orange/red ranks so I don't think we'll see too many high level ones BUT for the ones playing him they'll have to eat shit until he maybe gets nerfed.

I feel you, I started maining hwoarang because he looks cool and I find taekwando interesting and fun to use. Only later did I also find out that he's considered annoying and spammy. Doesn't feel as good playing him now. Though I still main him because I still like him the most.

The problem is that knowledge checks are so hard to deal with. Some characters excel at them and are therefore more hated.

Fr i feel you man like especially playing a easy while also strong character gets you so much damn hate like I main Alisa and the amount of abuse i've received from just playing her is unreal I've been called a pig, trash, not even human, a motherless weirdo and etc. for just playing a character and i get called a tier whore a lot (I've been playing her since 2008 btw aka when Bloodline Rebellion Released) i'm like these people are so damn hateful for playing a certain character and I play league of legends too but even they dont get shit on as bad as Tekken players to the point i truly believe that the Tekken community is way worse than the League community
SF6 was my first non-platform fighting game, so I went with Modern controls and chose Manon because I loved her moves and aesthetic. Got to platinum rank and loved every minute of it, but it turned out that Modern grapplers were a scourge in the community, so I switched to Kimberly. It wasn't as fun, and I ended up quitting with 100 hours in the game because Modern was so hated and it felt like my wins were illegitimate. I thought T8 looked cool, so I picked it up and chose Azucena after trying most characters, but apparently she's hated too. After 125 hours and reaching Fujin, I decided I'd pick up a secondary to see if my rank was solely from playing a new, gimmicky character. I thought Eddy looked fun because capoeira is awesome, so I waited for him to release. Hit the same rank, but it turns out he's even more hated and my wins feel even worse with him sometimes. I totally get the criticisms, especially with Eddy, but I guess I've just been unlucky with my choices. I'm probably gonna pick up Lili to prove to myself that I'm not being carried by "broken" and "braindead" S-tier characters, but I've decided I'm not going to stop playing Azu and Eddy. This is the most I've ever enjoyed a fighting game and I won't let community complaints ruin that for me. I'll just try to really learn the fundamentals so that I won't be stuck when balance changes happen.

I've strictly played Kazuya since T4. I also strictly avoided online play until T8 mostly due to nerves in a 1v1 environment. I started T8 as Kazuya, he didn't feel bad by any means, but I'm no expert and found it hard to punish with anything but 112. 30% winrate lol I'm fine with that. Switch to Feng (never played him) and start getting hatemail in yellow ranks... yellow ranks...... There's a lot to this game, whether you're getting snake edged by Feng, 50/50d by Kazuya or mixed up by Lili, I suppose I will never be playing "honest" tekken and I'm now fine with that.
