NO IT LOOKS AMAZING BROTHER

Z00101lol

Agreed. Up close the contrast looks too high, but you need that to make miniature terrain look realistic on the table.

Angdrambor

Yeah when I first started painting, I tried to be subtle, but in recent years I've been warming up to the idea that warhammer looks great when painted with simple colors and exaggerated contrast. Lighting is too subtle at that scale, so it needs a little help from paint. This goes double for terrain - it can have less detail, and has no problem yielding the spotlight to the characters. u/mdr270: mind the transparency/coverage of your layers. My choice would have been to skip drybrush layers one and two on the top - it already had a bit of textural variety in your last picture, and the wash would The final drybrush layer goes over everything to tie it all together, but this final layer is the one with the least coverage - it accents, but does not overwrite the underlying texture. Your wash technique is stellar. I can tell you've put some work into developing it. My choice is usually to do the wash before the final drybrush layer, but your trick with paper towels accomplishes the same task of protecting the highlights. To me, dark washes feel like the inking in comic books and its part of the exaggerated larger-than-life feeling. Contrast helps to develop the physical texture for your eyes.

CaptainPick1e

You said it brother

Speedhump23

Looks good.  Maybe add some other colours in the dry brush and do the wash on the sides as well.

spwd92

This right here OP! Try adding in some tan to your dry brush layering, you'll get some really realistic looking stone after you wash!

ExoditeDragonLord

Came here to say this, all it needs is a few different tones to break up the monochrome but it looks great!

erikbrandvig

Nope, looks great! moss effects would look pretty good on this kind of rock, too. it would add some color and make the lines pop!

mdr270

Ugh. Typo in the title: dry *brush

MurderToes

How will you ever recover from this?

AromaticMushroom4905

I honestly thought it was a real piece of rock till I saw the sub reddit so well done for realism.

RemixOnAWhim

Looks great, well done! If you want more color, I find the best results going pretty bright and contrasty on the initial layer and then doing more subtle colors in the wash, and going over everything with like a white-tan-light brown grafient drybrush. Being that the first layer is so buried under everything else, it needs to pop more than it looks like it will to even show up by the end, but it adds lots of interest and depth!

Bone_Dice_in_Aspic

generally yes, before clicking, but in this specific case no actually

monkeyishi

It depends on your goal. If its too bright for you then it's too much dry brush. Too dark then too much wash. It's mostly a personal preference thing.

emkay_graphic

No. GW also uses quite strong edge highlights, and it looks great

Scuba-Cat-

You want exaggerated detail so it can be seen from further away

Hermesthothr3e

When I'm doing grey rocks I always add the odd bit of browns and other colours in different areas. Not a lot and just spots.

Express-Region7347

Nah.

DunwichChild990

Nope.

deliciouspie

Well done. These look great, dude!

TheCanadian_Jedi

Which one is the finished product?

mdr270

The first 3 are finished. The last one is before dry brushing or washing.

TheCanadian_Jedi

I was gonna say, "they looked amazing till the last pic but wanted to make sure before I sounded like an idiot"

BeerGoddess84

Looks fantastic!

MyFartsHitMyBalls

“Too heavy” is impossible at this point. Unless it’s something absurd. Great work! Obi Wan has the high ground.

MakarovJAC

You can say they're IN SPACE.

Chris_in_Lijiang

Looks great, but needs more verticality and preferably a temple on top, like [this](https://mytouristmaps.com/fanjingshan-china/).

desperate_nerve_074

What is your end goal here? It all depends on that. Is this supposed to be the entire thing or are you planning to add other elements like flocking? As it is, I think it looks good. Maybe a bit too light for my liking, but that's a personal preference. Also, it might just be the color grading of the camera used.

Araignys

Nope, perfect

Coranis83

Simply perfect

International_Pay717

It looks great. Nice contrast without popping too much 5/5

DK_F-Town

No! This is ... Perfect 😉

LoveisBaconisLove

Looks great

Kamenev_Drang

Drybrush is superb, wouldn't bother with the wash.

DatGaminKid7142

If you want to add a bit of colour you can do a heavy dry brush of beige / brown before your white dry brush.

shorelessSkies

No I honestly thought it was a rock while I was scrolling past

PublicYogurtcloset8

Nah looks awesome! Great job

BaselessEarth12

In the very first pic, I genuinely thought that I was looking at a chunk of concrete and was very confused as to why someone would put that on a table... Then I saw the subreddit. So I'd say you're fine.

Such_Independent910

Nope, looks great

Such_Independent910

Nope, looks great

Grimskull-42

Nah that looks golden.

DaftSpooky

I thought it was a real rock for a second

uploadingmalware

I think it looks great, high contrast between the base color and dry brush helps to add realistic shadowing and whatnot. Edit: just to add, for anyone looking to make realistic rock/concrete textures. I found that painting on some scenic cement (homemade in my case) and then sprinkling mortar powder over it through a fine stocking leg and then spraying with another coat of scenic cement really works wonders. Can post some pics once I'm done my diorama for anyone interested.

anarchy_joules

Not at all. Looks great.

Hanged_Man_

Looks great to me.

InjuredSandwich

I think it looks great.

Major-Language-2787

No, but just my opinion rocks looks better when you mixed different colors in them. Subtle hues of browns, blues, reds, and greys give a feeling of a more textures surface.

Sahaak_Craft

Perfect for me mate! You can try washing with some other colors than grey, maybe some green, brown or red tones and then drybrush just to create some natural undertone. That being said, your piece looks so good :)

[deleted]

I like it!

Fly67

Looks terrible. 😒
