There was a period of time shortly after 1.4 where people were very upset with him. I’m talking massively downvoted comments and stuff. It was mostly over the luck mechanic and how using the “wrong” torches in the wrong areas would debuff your luck. He tried so hard to defend that mechanic and talked about how he was trying to coerce people into placing themed torches the way he does, but he ended up caving in the end and everyone forgot about it after.
In my experience with online culture, people tend to forget controversies relatively quickly if the content creator/influencer/dev/etc... Keeps creating content after addressing/fixing the controversy, people are really forgetful, the best example I can give is the (second) OGL disaster that almost happened in D&D, which was promptly forgotten after WotC gave up upon it & with the release of the movie and BG3.
They profit from you buying the game, but they don’t have any micro transactions afterwards. Most paid games either stop updating at a point or add paid extras
