I absolutely love the old Steel Legion miniatures, and have a couple of boxes of the standard squads from when they were still on offer from GW.
Hopefully the prices won't be too absurd. I'd love to round them off into a coherent force, but the costs of the MTO Commissars were high enough that I went from planning on purchasing the whole lot to just picking up Yarrick, so I'm not very optimistic.
Yeah it'll be a bit of a headscratcher if the MTO prices outstrip the already-inflated secondary market
Nice to see the Commissar with respirator on MTO though, those have been hard to find for a long time
This is what I'm hoping for - I've never bought from MTO GW but surely they can't be as expesnive as what I've seen for Plasma trooper and the Boltpistol lieutenant on ebay which both average about £30/40...
please...
IIRC, when they did the Vostroyan made to order before COVID, the plasma guys jumped from $10 USD to $25 USD. I wouldn’t be surprised if they try for $30 this time around but who knows. Also watch out: they raised some prices of items DURING the week of the Vostroyan run. Total dick move on their part.
Yeah… Glad they are rereleased but considering how expensive the last made to order round was I‘m confident the prices will quickly cure me from any temptation to buy them.
Still happy for the people that were waiting for a comeback.
I got the last Valhallan MTO back in February of 2020 and it was $150 CAD before tax for the platoon. Hopefully it will stay somewhere in the same range for this run.
I’m sorry to report they happened earlier this year. I only ordered the 2nd Edition Yarrick, so I can’t speak to larger orders yet, but I haven’t received mine yet. Hopefully once they’re out it’ll drive down the prices on EBay (though probably not by much; the MTO prices were much higher than I would’ve anticipated) and let you get what you’re looking for.
3rd edition Yarrick was $28 USD and in finecast resin, and 2nd edition Yarrick was around $32 and in metal. The rest of the lineup cost around $32 each and were mostly in metal.
Just came from the email straight to this channel to see what you guys think.
Considering the ridiculous prices people charge for them on eBay, this is welcoming news.
I really hope GW does not charge eBay prices as well...
This makes me hope my goofy "Arks will have a Steel Legion refresh and that's why we haven't seen a Guard boarding patrol" idea is on the money-they MTO'd commissars before releasing the new one, for example.
This are cool but I would buy them if they were updated new models, they sure do need a refresh.
Fingers cross GW updates Steel Legion, Catachan, Vostroyan, Valhalans etc it in a near future. They all need more love
I don't think they get a updated box, if we now get a finecast to order. Maybe we get something like the cadians, where we first get the updated sprue and then the new models. But i don't think so...
Yes they could do that, Instead of making new models they could instead use the cadian default troop but release several new, heads, torsos, weapons for certain regiments/units, something like the cadian upgrades :
They could release Mordian upgrade, Steel legion Upgrade, Catachan upgrade.. etc.
This is why when making new models you have to be careful to make them as much upgradable as possible.
I don’t think an upgrade sprue would be enough to differentiate these alternate models from cadians. Even using the cadian armor, which none of these models utilized:
Vostroyans need new heads, arms and legs
Mordians/praetorians would need new heads and arms
Steel legion need heads and alternate legs
Catachans need new heads and arms
Valhallans may be able to get by using dkok, but those trench coats are pretty iconic and the head joins aren’t all that compatible with a ushanka
That’s a ton to cram onto an upgrade sprue, and at that point they’re probably better off just making a different box
Tallarn would be doable, really only needing heads
They definitely need an update. They need a flamer/heavy flamer, melta gunner, veterans, an autocannon, mortar team, snipers and a vox caster. Re-releasing the 3rd Ed stormtroopers would make good grenadiers as well. Tank crew would be nice too.
Not sure about that. I doubt we're getting guard units any time soon. And if we are, I doubt steel legion are the first pick. Normies can't tell them apart from Krieg and they make no sense being a KT, because they need Chimeras (Yes, they do)
Doesn't necessarily have to be soon - GW work 2-3 years in advance, so market tests like these would be suuuuper preliminary. If this leads to Armageddon plastic, it'd be in 10th or perhaps even 11th edition.
I do agree with you that they look very similar to Krieg, arguably too much so. very similar silhouette. Can only imagine the disappoitnment when grandma buys the wrong gas mask-wearing, skull-faces-on-the-elites, quasi-stahlhelmed, pastel-colour-robed, world war-inspired, lasgun-toting line troops.
Plus of course GW are keen to distance themselves from sus politics and Steel Legion are definitely a lightning rod for Wehraboos, even more than krieg.
Mind you, Krieg infantry don't make particular sense as a KT, yet here we are.
I personally don't think they look too much like Krieg. People just aren't all that observant. I'd collect both if I had infinite time for guard, but there's always an opportunity cost. After 150 guardsmen I'd probably rather paint an Eldar Lynx or something.
And yeah, DKK didn't make sense for KT. Especially not when Grens and Engineers already existed. Even then, Krieg were never about heroes.
Tbf if they don't sell at all they're probably right that there's not enough consumer demand - Armageddon consistently top polls in this sub as one of the most popular regiments; but talk is cheap and buying behaviour often doesn't match.
But it's probably more about comparative percentages. If Steel Legion MTO sell double what Valhallans did, regardless of what the actual sales numbers are, that's useful data for determining the next plastic regiment.
Fair. That real solution to this is for them to stop being so clingy about these minor factions and let people like anvil industries officially licence their prints for them. That way GW doesn't need to worry about their up front costs for the individual micro armies, and the printers can stop beating around the bush.
Or hell maybe official STLs and let people buy those instead
Why. These sculpts are still good and even now way better then the plastic Dkok sculpts.
Boot lickers out in force today. Sorry for not frothing over anything new from GW. I prefer my sculpts to have soul and character
I like the Steel Legion models and the FW DKOK models, and yet I find your claim that the plastic DKOK models aren’t good completely divorced from reality. Maybe you don’t like the aesthetic, but the kit is fantastic.
I do not have the plastic kit, but it annoys me for several reasons:
1) The fact they're labelled as ''Veterans'' is the first and foremost, Krieg already had a dedicated veteran unit, the Grenadiers, with a very, very cool aesthetic to them (in fact being the first models I ever purchased and assembled, there might be some bias there, tbh). Skull mask, segmented carapace and those tubular Hellguns.
2) The look of the squad just feels... wrong, to me. The mask is different, the proportions are different and the sword bayonet that was described as being one of the weapon the Kriegsmen trained the most with, to the point where it's also issued to Grenadiers even if they can't fix it on their Hellgun, is replaced by the socket bayonet that would be useless if not fixed on the lasguns.
3) The addition of snipers and medics directly in the squad. While it is minor, the Death Korps list had specific options you could take, the point was to make them distinct enough from the regular IG list. This included them not having snipers and their medics being the medical Servitors that followed the Quartermaster around, and it lowkey rubs me the wrong way those two things were added.
All in all, it seems like a very surface addition of the Death Korps, with little care for the extensive lore written behind it.
I actually like the SL better than the DKoK. The DKoK sculpts are better executed but I like the less overwrought design of older miniatures and their scale fits better for my Stargrave and old Necromunda miniatures.
I can afford them, and like them, but have too many Krieg to paint to justify starting any force.
Hopefully someone does a full mechanised force with this MTO. Shame the Basilisks went OOP a week before. Shit timing GW.
I already have 40 troopers, 3 heavy weapon teams, the officers... I already booked enough overtime at work to complete my set. I want to do the army of my dreams when I was younger and that's a mechanised Armageddon force. Luckily, I have a Armageddon Pattern Basilisk already that I ordered last year and painted.
Then it sounds like you're already invested, which probably makes this MTO an easier pickup. Enjoy your early Christmas.
And yeah, my DKK army is a similar "Dream army". Having a blast working on it.
I just wish they’d do an upgrade sprue compatible with the DKOK veterans. Wouldn’t be too hard to do as they’re both great coat Guard. Just a bunch of heads and accessories would probably be enough.
Bruh the majority of their classic fantasy and death fields lines are solid and multi-pose, plus Spacenam and potentially more Reptilian Overlords lines may be part of their store too. Also they're 100% plastic cast which means they aren't bitch-made like anything resin is.
They’re good for their price, but have mushy details and wonky proportions. I definitely understand the appeal, but some models are straight ugly. The cannon fodder look like they’re made of tootsie rolls and most others have bigger heads than even GW cadians. I do however hope they do more things like the reptile Ian overlords collab. Get nicer sculpts for the good prices
I just sold my whole platoon, including the Commissar. I don't know if I'm happy I did it in time to get good value for it, and shrink the pile and icus on Valhallans and Cadians.
Or to be sad that I can't round the platoon out with the heavy weapon squads, I was missing the lascannons and heavy bolters.
Ah well..
Well the Aussie prices are out.. f***
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-AU/searchResults?_dyncharset=UTF-8&_dynSessConf=-1082165526636304281&qty=&sorting=&view=&Ntt=Armageddon
I feel for them too! I'm uk I was just looking for prices this morning. Mad difference! Small Platoon isn't all that bad, but the heavy bolter teams and individual characters are crazy prices!
I have it and it's a beautiful sculpt! However, keep in mind the model you will receive will have a Boltgun (with skulls on it) instead of the bolt pistol depicted in the photograph.
I only noticed the weird photoshop thanks to your comment. What's the point in them having done that?
I've got the OG and the beefy one handed boltgun (storm bolter?) looks badass.
In [this review](https://taleofpainters.com/2016/11/review-made-to-order-steel-legion/) of the previous MTO (6 years ago), one can clearly see the same picture was used for advertising the model, but the one received is the version with the Boltgun (skulls).
In *Codex - Armageddon* (page 13), there is a picture of the Commissar as depicted on the MTO photograph and the text below it reads "Command Section with a **converted Commissar**".
So most likely GW has been using the converted Commissar for sales and marketing material, even though that is not the model they sell.
Another lead is that in the [Imperial Guard Collecting Guide](https://reader017.pdfslide.net/reader017/html5/js20200117/5e21b6c364f0f/5e21b6cb77fac.jpg), the Bolt Pistol arm is nowhere to be found, only the Boltgun version (see at the bottom).
Anyone got the link to this article?

Dang, did the mto commissars with Yarrick already happen!?!

Dang, thanks for letting me know, though. Was curious, how much was Yarrick, btw? Was he out of metal or plastic?
Think he was around 20 quid, and made in finecast resin
3rd edition Yarrick was $28 USD and in finecast resin, and 2nd edition Yarrick was around $32 and in metal. The rest of the lineup cost around $32 each and were mostly in metal.
Just came from the email straight to this channel to see what you guys think. Considering the ridiculous prices people charge for them on eBay, this is welcoming news. I really hope GW does not charge eBay prices as well...
Haha we all know GW does not believe in ‘leave 10% for the next seller’
This makes me hope my goofy "Arks will have a Steel Legion refresh and that's why we haven't seen a Guard boarding patrol" idea is on the money-they MTO'd commissars before releasing the new one, for example.

I mean if you swap the heads, legs torsos and shoulders, what is even the point as upgrade sprues?
Imo the new longer coats work great for steel legion
But then they lose one of their distinctive feathers…
They could make upgrade sprues for the Krieg too, then you're only replacing heads and arms
People always say this but honestly the regiments are so different there’s no way to make upgrade kits that actually do them justice.
I don’t think an upgrade sprue would be enough to differentiate these alternate models from cadians. Even using the cadian armor, which none of these models utilized: Vostroyans need new heads, arms and legs Mordians/praetorians would need new heads and arms Steel legion need heads and alternate legs Catachans need new heads and arms Valhallans may be able to get by using dkok, but those trench coats are pretty iconic and the head joins aren’t all that compatible with a ushanka That’s a ton to cram onto an upgrade sprue, and at that point they’re probably better off just making a different box Tallarn would be doable, really only needing heads

No. Only Primaris.
This is probably a market test to test the appetite for plastic steel legion… if these sell decently (or don’t), GW will use that data.

Unfortunately for quality control and brand reasons there’s absolutely no chance that’ll happen
I know that's the case, but with how often forge world drops the ball I could only hope that they'd go for that options.
Why. These sculpts are still good and even now way better then the plastic Dkok sculpts. Boot lickers out in force today. Sorry for not frothing over anything new from GW. I prefer my sculpts to have soul and character
Yeah, I'd pick steel legion over plastic DKK any day. And pick resin DKK over both. Not sure why people can't enjoy things that aren't new releases.
That's a hot take.
Bad take for sure lol.
Why? They do look better. The Dkok ones are pretty meh. Especially compared to the forgeworld ones

I don't need this. My wallet doesn't need this. But I certainly want this.
I have a fully-resin Praetorian army from Victoria Miniatures... and yet these lads from Armageddon call me... And don't need them, I really don't!!
…Tallarn next?
Or Mordians...
I thought GW was going to quit selling metal minis altogether. This is awesome!
Hate to tell you, but they won’t be metal
They will be. Made to order almost always is.
Consider me aroused!
I have a made to order Ordo Malleus Inquistor in terminator armor that is metal, so there's hope!
I can afford them, and like them, but have too many Krieg to paint to justify starting any force. Hopefully someone does a full mechanised force with this MTO. Shame the Basilisks went OOP a week before. Shit timing GW.

My wallet and bank account just screamed
Are they going to be metal still?
They have got to be plastic right?
Fine cast resin
Likely metal, they never made the tranisiton to finecast
I just wish they’d do an upgrade sprue compatible with the DKOK veterans. Wouldn’t be too hard to do as they’re both great coat Guard. Just a bunch of heads and accessories would probably be enough.
Honestly I'm starting to see the age on these old metal regiments.
Considering they were made when Who Let The Dogs Out was charting, that's not bad going.
GW: babe it's steel Legion ordering time Me: plastic kit please
I’m glad that these are coming for those who love them. Neat models! Enjoy, Steep Legion fans!
Come on Vostroyan next!
Can I buy the commissar and heavy weapons separately
Yes
Could use Wargames Atlantic minis instead. Way cheaper and hard plastic.
The WA steel legion look awful though
Really? Awful?
Tbh most of their minis look awful lol
Bruh the majority of their classic fantasy and death fields lines are solid and multi-pose, plus Spacenam and potentially more Reptilian Overlords lines may be part of their store too. Also they're 100% plastic cast which means they aren't bitch-made like anything resin is.

That would be the rational and economic way to do it. So I shall do the exact opposite.
I just sold my whole platoon, including the Commissar. I don't know if I'm happy I did it in time to get good value for it, and shrink the pile and icus on Valhallans and Cadians. That's 305.57 of AUD dollars more for the reinforced platoon, I feel for you. Its expensive anyway tbh.
I feel for them too! I'm uk I was just looking for prices this morning. Mad difference! Small Platoon isn't all that bad, but the heavy bolter teams and individual characters are crazy prices!
Oh sorry I assumed you were Australian, do you know if its all tax?
I really don't know, tax and shipping must have an impact, big markup from UK prices!
If I had some time and some merch sense I'd buy some to sell them for profit in a couple of years. I'll probably buy the comissar though.

So that commissar doesn’t exist as a purchasable model? Well damn.
Woah that's some amazing deep dive knowledge! Thanks!
Where and when are they available?
Available as Made to Order on GW's website, from Saturday, March 25.
Thanks, that Commisar looks tempting!
Any idea what material they will be made of? Metal? Plastic? Resin?
THIS is a test to see if Steel Legion is marketable. Maybe its a hint of plastic steel legion to come?
These are plastic kits right?
my wallet weeps...
Anyone got the link to this article? Edit: [Here](https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/03/19/sunday-preview-commander-farsight-takes-his-shot-at-the-arks-of-omen/?&&)
Is this metal or resin?
Metal.
Zamn that's nice I mean I'm 3d printing a steel legion army but I mean hey I'm happy my favorite gaurd faction gets our models again
Is there a link to this can't find it on the warhammer Community page. Need this in my life.
https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/03/19/sunday-preview-commander-farsight-takes-his-shot-at-the-arks-of-omen/
Will they be plastic?? Or resin
3rd option.
They will be made out of money
You're getting warmer.
Well that little blurb of text below the images confirms Yarrick is dead.
I pray that Commissar Yarrick would be put into legends so we can still play him on the battlefield
Where will this be available?
On the GW site under made to order. They become available on Saturday, March 25th.
I will buy the commissar if he’s under $50AUD, but after the WFB chaos champions being upped from $20AUD to $50AUD for MTO, I won’t hold my breath.
For someone on a more limited budget, what’s the best here? I get it’s obviously preference but I’m not too sure what I want, lol
Does the Commissar actually look like that? I thought he had a skull mask & a bolter.
As far as I can remember this is how the Steel Legion commissar always looked.
