Idk if it was intended this way, but I always interpreted this line as a double entendre and it just hits for me:
You have to know every place I go
That feeling stuck that I offered trust
And it left me solo
The double entendre being “solo” or “so low.” Just does something to my brain.
He’s lyrically gifted. One of the main reasons I love TSSF is because of Parker’s writing, the things he can put together, AND the delivery. How can a line as simple as “I feel your hand inside of mine, no I don’t, never mind” sound so good
Empty Space contains my absolute favorite lyrics ever, and the cadence is just wonderful
“I dwell on it nightly
Tread swiftly and lightly
Make up the lost ground
And see what you don't see
All questions aside
I asked and you lied
And now my hands are tied”
If I Fall has one of my favorite TSSF verses ever:
I never seem to have it in line. I don't think you've ever seen me fine. Give me space, make me pace, let me whine. Saving face at the cost of what I owe. Getting big, watch the clock, where'd the time go? Cut it short when I'm scared of what I can't grow. All these loose ends that I can't sew. What do I care, what do you know?
Puts me in such a mood whenever that part hits.
Love that line. And when he hits with “Sick of all the wack shit you’re getting into. think i’ll bounce, i gotta go. i’m stuck inside a place where i can’t love you. you feel the vibe, i think you know.” WOW.
I wanna watch him play, wanna see him score
Wanna be around 'cause I need to make him smile some more
hits a bit deeper now that i have a nephew and ive been kinda struggling mentally this past few years
on a surface level, the lyrics to upside down might not sound super deep but when you think about it especially with their past songs, it’s so well done.
*is this really what you want?
swear I never meant to haunt
all I ever do is taunt
couldn’t handle how you flaunt
now it’s quiet on the front
has been for so many months
now it’s wild to remember I was in love with you once*
I’ve always thought of it as Parker referring to past albums, specifically self titled, as taunting because of the angry lyrics and how he couldn’t get over the break up and how his ex had moved on and was flaunting in a way (“I don’t wanna hear about your trips and all the time that you waste”). Also, the haunt calls back to placeholder “and it’s haunting me but I feel fine.”
Now that a lot of time has passed, he looks back and finds it hard to believe that not only was he so in love with this girl, but also that he has finally healed. I feel like we can all relate to this or have been able to before.
Patience is useless when im sober and you’re wasted and you don’t wanna hear it so go on just leave it, and I count the times that I’m driving home and I’m talking to myself like I’m not alone, trying figure out who I’m running from, gonna figure out who I’ve been running from
Love these two flows in Closure:
For now I'll learn and settle for less
Shut my eyes and get some rest
Feel the pulse beneath this sunken chest
And maybe one day I can be there for you
//
I wish I could say that I've seen this before
The depth of the bottom the taste of the floor
It leaves me restless and tired and sore
But you won't break my mind just yet
One I’ve always thought of is in the song Right Here. His flow when he’s singing “is that how your time’s spent? Anticipate then it’s gone again - It’s appeal - is the lust for the things you conceal”
Just the way that he puts together phrases with certain cadences that just make the songs flow well with all the other instruments. That’s one of the things that appeals to me the most about this band,
They just did it again in Letterman. The bendy parts in the guitar during the chorus match up with what Parker is singing. For instance, listen to when Parker sings “it’s never gonna help me admit” and how Kevin’s guitar playing is perfectly in sync with the rhyme scheme. Absolutely incredible writing by these guys all around. Everyone does their part masterfully.
Agreed. Definitely a top 5 song of theirs for me personally. I remember when it came out I was 18 and just starting to blaze at the time. When WYDS dropped I lost my fucking mind lmao. It was a crazy time in my life with a lot of fucking up, learning, and growing. But I wouldn’t change it for the world looking back now. Can’t live with regrets!
The song upside down is hitting so hard at this point in my life. 23 about to be 24
“24 staring in your face like it’s the front of the door, I know right now it’s hard cause this all feels like a chore… I cannot tell the ceiling from the floor”
It’s so simple yet so effective. I think that’s why his lyrics are so good he never over does it just says what he needs to for the song in a way that it works
i understand we all went away so we could have the stories to share when we’re back
try to pass the same old shit to get ahead and start your paper stack
i never thought a bond was something we lacked
i guess some of us just needed a change to heal the bones we cracked
One of my most heavily-rotated songs when I first got into TSSF, “Roam”. But his lyrics, cadence, etc. have always blown me away.
“Think I'll go and roam outside your boundary
Walk on the ridge far away from the city
Friends of friends prove untrustworthy
Be gone, just like you were at the last party
No SOS until the bottles are empty”
Simple, but dope. I’ve always maintained that he has the poeticism/lyricism of a Hip-Hop emcee or poet. Sounds weird, but from his Forum of Passion podcast interview, he seems to have a big background in rap/Hip-Hop which gives him that really unique edge when it comes to writing and singing for pop punk and Hardcore.
all you tried and failed to do was justify your theft
and I get that your bereft of other things to occupy yourself
but keep my god damn name out of your mouth.
Speaking on his flow in Distaste:
"And you still deny and try to hide the smoke from your gun
Think I’ll slip inside and start making you aim at everyone"
The second line is said in such a cadence that really shows off some of his hip-hop influence
Right Here could honestly have one of the best verse lyrics in TSSF discography.
“Do you see good intent?
When you read me you're trying to test me.
You don't get my mindset, you only see the where and the when. Is that how your time's spent? Anticipate, then it's gone again. Its appeal is the lust for the things you conceal. Roll on like the spoke in your wheel, until it breaks and you feel how I feel…”
Crazy.
“I invest my ideas but get swallowed in debt
And the only release is to yell and sweat
Until my clothes are soaking wet” - Closure
“But I hope you go home and admit you
Were wrong for the stress you put me through
Free me from the anchor
Depart these seas and let me do what I have to do” - Placeholder
I don’t think I could’ve ever written songs like Parker when I was 19 years old.
“Cuz I’ve grown up only to hate my own bed i figure ill just sleep when im dead” i always thought it was like those were two different phrases, but they actually support each other. He hates his bed (upbringing? Idk) so he’ll sleep when hes dead. Took me too long to get it. Always thought he was just saying thoughts he had 💀
“My pessimistic views stem from all the drugs I use” Just hearing about the substance abuse Parker went through makes the line affect me so much more than what it should as someone who’s been through a similar situation. I think as a lyric its so relatable
One thing I've noticed is the repetition of certain phrases in different songs on the same album. E.g. on Self-Titled, the song Solo: "Feeling indigo, how bout you? I feel indigo." Then again on Nerve: "I can't pass through Indio, without feeling indigo."
Same thing on the album Proper Dose. In Let It Go, "I feel your hand inside of mine, No I don't, Nevermind." Then on Line, "Feel your hand inside of mine, fill it all the way up to the line, feel your hand inside of mine, wait no I don't nevermind."
That repetition just makes listening to the albums and finding the threads among each so satisfying for me. Like taking one line and finding different meanings in the words. Looking forward to seeing if Parker does that again in I Want To Disappear.
all of growing on you, but this line in particular is my favorite part:
“Are you leaving me now, for the high that you chase?
And will it be worth it when that's all that you taste?”
I hope you feel the heavy gloom when you’re all done up in a crowded room and your life trips up over those shoes that you paid too much for, but not in dues. And I’ll be watching from a distance. Wouldn’t want to miss this. Was it fake the whole time, or was it just instance? Man it’s so personal yet it’s business. I want it to hit so close to home.
I hope you feel that heavy gloom
When you’re all done up in a crowded room
And your life trips up over those shoes
That you paid too much for but not in dues
And him watching from a distance not wanting to miss this really just is the cherry on top. I’ve pointed the fuck out of my finger to this line 👉
This body's closed until further notice
Or
Free me from the anchor, depart these seas and let me do what I have to do
Pretty much any and all lines from Placeholder
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread and re-reading lyrics outside of the context of the song and letting them blow my mind yet again. Aaaaand now I’m gonna need Parker to put out a book of poetry tbh
Idk if it was intended this way, but I always interpreted this line as a double entendre and it just hits for me: You have to know every place I go That feeling stuck that I offered trust And it left me solo The double entendre being “solo” or “so low.” Just does something to my brain.
You just blew my brain!! I never picked up on that before.
The pause when he says so…low definitely sounds like it could be that
Cause all the women swimming in my head are not the same ones laying in my bed
BUT I DO MY BEST TO IGNORE IT
BUT YOU STILL COME UP

This shit slaps so fucking hard. He flows there comparable to a lot of rappers
Always sore in my back from the spine that I lack
I let the furnace of my anger heat where you lay, it never burned you it just kept the cold at bay
I wanna watch him play, wanna see him score Wanna be around 'cause I need to make him smile some more hits a bit deeper now that i have a nephew and ive been kinda struggling mentally this past few years

From Rally Cap: I should have told you, when we were younger; Talk quenches thirst but does nothing for hunger
thought I’d burn the seams if they frayed thought I’d prove the point that I made however long you’re gone I will wait
I WILL WAAAAAIIIITTT
He has a great feel for rhythm in his writing. Maybe the hip hop influence.
Not broke just bent

Yo, the way he sings “around” is so sick. Gives me chills. 👌🏻

I've got a bunch of them tattooed lmao. If I had to pick one "Hard shove, feel the heavy weight"
