No the fuck they aren't, they just weren't recognized by the medical community, and by the general population much later, until recently. The naming and recognition is new, that's it. Sweet aunt gertrude wasn't "eccentric" or "weird" she just had autism in an age where that sort of thing didn't have a name let alone was publicly recognized and understood. Something not having existed before is different than people simply not knowing about it before.
