Registered Nurse here no doctor , looks like edema (fluid build up) forsure however it could be just from his age and natural declining health. To have edema on just one hand makes me believe he has impaired lymph function on that arm . Possibly from TIA/stroke , previous damage to that arm/hand , or some sort of vascular changes in that arm ( atherosclerosis,arteriosclerosis) . If he had heart failure or CHF the swelling would be more universal .
Also no Doctor, I work in IT. A swollen left hand is often caused by a bad posture while working on a computer. I'd suggest he gets himself a more ergonomic keyboard
