What is ‘upfront’ season?

mjsisko

All of the major studios do a large high profile event for advertising and marketing. Basically it’s a huge sales pitch to advertisers to spend money with that broadcast brand. Mid May all the major networks and things like Google, Twitter even Tik Tok do these events. They are big money big profile.

jaybboy

Oh veeery cool - ty! certainly quite the set up u have there

Creative-Cash3759

ohhh thanks for this info tho

oneskinnydave

Man I miss upfronts! I’m on the post production/gfx side of things, but my company was started/forged in early 2000s upfronts madness - crazy turnaround, so many reversions, wacky screen sizes, mullions, sending editors on planes with tapes of the final edits….ah….good ol days 😂

GromitInWA

Keychron fam represent!

ready1take1

great to see other spyder X80's out in the wild!

mjsisko

Can’t keep them in the shop!!

avgizmo

What stand are you using for your stream decks to make them double decker like that? Love it!

mjsisko

It’s a 3D print base I found on etsy, 50$. Solid unit. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1148121754/

talones

Yes. I’m really looking this.

RobMV03

I'm a lurker in this sub who works in TV, but on the creative side. One of the major reasons I lurk in this sub is because when I was just starting out, I was a post PA at CBS promo and had to deliver the digi-betas and the back up beta SP's of the upfronts to the truck on the morning of the show. It was my first time ever seeing that side of things and I was completely in awe. So many screens, so many wires, seemingly so much madness, but the director and first AD were the nicest, kindest people to me, and took two minutes out of their day to give me the barest "this is what we do" tour of the truck before thanking me for the tapes and sending me on my way. Looks like things have really advanced since those days, but the fundamentals remain the same. Very cool. Good luck this week.

gramps666

Those are fun to do sometimes. I got to see Santana play at one like 10 years ago. That was pretty cool.

shmallkined

And not a single vMix window in sight!

infinitevalence

Love the K4v2's that is my daily though mine is far from stock.

mjsisko

They are great units!! Wife was annoyed I bought a second one…backup means backup!!!

talones

I’ve completely switched over to low profile for all of my MKBs. Highly recommend.

aykay55

Holy shit that’s a lot of screens

mjsisko

Ha!! Those are just my multi views for the show, we have so so many more between the playback desks, TD desks

menicknick

Hey, I know you guys! Break a leg! Wish I was on that one.

howlingwolf487

Love me some StreamDeck (and maybe Companion?) action.

mjsisko

Best way to fire both spyders in sync

kwanijml

Yup. If you understand how to program Companion for your production or screen switchers presets/scripts in like 3 layers- rudiments/mixers, intermediates/relative, and full/absolute presets there's honestly very rarely a need for a desk or console where that would make anything easier than just using your stream deck and the computer you used to program the switcher in the first place. The event master desks are frankly a joke if you have any shared pip/key layers and you think you're going to punch up your show like a production switcher. Even with Atems or carbonites, it's far faster to set up supersources or mini-ME's with your laptop than with the DVE dials on a desk. So unless you just *must* have a physical T-bar for some rock'n'roll crossfades....I see most people in denial when they insist on a big console with their switcher.

awf7

How is Companion, is it that valuable to learn? I hear that term thrown around a lot but don’t really have any experience with it. I tend to use Vmix a lot and set up most of my shortcuts with a streamdeck.

kwanijml

Is the strramdeck software vmix plug in still limited to just firing off shortcut keys that you've already created? If so, then that is highly limiting, and frankly it's unnecessarily dangerous to have keys on your keyboard linked to show-screwing functions (e.g. if you accidentally don't take vmix out of focus before typing something, you could fire off a bunch of shortcuts...like if you were text chatting to a vmix caller, it's easy to have the call manager window on another monitor and assume it's in focus and start typing). And that's double the work when programming a new show (you have to program new shortcuts *and* also program buttons on your streamdeck). The Companion vmix module allows not only firing off shortcuts (if you insist on still using those), but actually just communicates directly to the web-api, and gives you full access to all of that. You don't need to program any shortcuts in vmix. And then of course, where Companion really shines is that it has modules for a lot more professional gear than the streamdeck software does- so if you're in an environment where you need to control (especially in sync or in a single button press) other equipment along with vmix, then Companion is god.

piratepigeon55

Can anyone identify what type of stand the top middle monitor is mounted on?

mjsisko

Op here, it’s a USB C monitor that has a folio style cover/stand combo. It is my companion screen running of the Mac mini under the monitor. Or did you mean the top center 43”? That’s just a standard chief pole mount.

mbakuscousin

That actually looks like a Premier Mounts TL-BASE and given the height I would guess it’s their 84” poles, but they could very well be 72”.

mjsisko

72”

[deleted]

What program is that on the two bottom screens?

mjsisko

Extreme left and right monitors are the Spyder advanced GUI, left is backup and right is primary. Center monitor on the desk is companion. Everything else is multiview

Eli_is_567

Is writers strike going to effect yall? I’m next door at robinhood!

mjsisko

Yes but as this is a public forum I won’t discuss further!! How is Robin Hood going?

loganmn
