If you're wanting to leave the underlying paint, just paint over it. Sharpie would be very thin compared to all but a glaze in terms of paint layers.
If your want to remove the whole thing, alcohol will take it off as easily or more so than the rest of the paint.
In my experience with acrylic paint, idk abt citadels, yes. Sharpies are alcohol based ink. They can be removed with alcohol, hand sanitizer, and acetone. Don't do the last one as it will ruin the plastic.
Came here to say this. Luke from Geek Gaming Scenics introduced me to the gold sharpie base and it revolutionised my capacity for doing this much gold trim.
For my regular troops I just drybrush on the gold trim and then neaten up with Abaddon Black which saves heaps of time but leaves the trim looking slightly more faded.
Protip: matte varnish before doing the trim. That way, if you get any errant marks, you can remove it with alcohol without damaging the rest of the paint.
I've never heard of this technique, but seeing as I've been painting TSons recently, it does sound tempting. Got any recommendations on what sharpies to use? Tip width, brand etc.?
I'll have to find the brand i've been using recently. But I started with just the basic sharpie brand metallic 3 pack (had silver, gold, and bronze). And used a knife to make a smaller tip on them.
The colors were a little flat, so I went to an art store and picked up an actual gold colored paint pen.
Which is exactly why I based in gold then filled the panels in red
https://preview.redd.it/qlszyl7y0ghc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a4c78f3bb9d0ea020ccac3f92027c11471841347

My wife collects thousand sons 🤣 occasionally I help out but told her just get a sharpie. She is leagues above me in artistic stuff but folded after the 3rd rubric 😆
I do have a full sisters army, but I had a process for sisters so it's became easy.
Ultra boys are not my space marines I'm a dark angels guy, so no process for the basics, plus this big boy is extra special.
Have you tried paint markers or Gundam markers (which is the same thing but slightly more purpose-built for models)? They have more shades and colors in most arts'n'crafts stores.
Honestly teenage me wanted them but had no money, I'm happy that adult me with money isn't interested in them beyond enjoying other people's hard work.
If I were to play and paint these days I would go for thousand sons because they appeal but my skills are so far from what is required. I'll just continue to admire from afar.
I think I must be one of the few people that actually dislike non-metallic metal, although I wouldn't mind learning to do it at some point more for the control aspects needed.

Just finished mine a few weeks ago! The trim is crazy!
https://preview.redd.it/hy87ahi2ijhc1.jpeg?width=2211&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36bd17c1caf4fd9a644da6a176a4f8170f0b4904
I found it easier to spray him gold and shade/drybrush/highlight all the trim first, then I painted in the blue. After sealing him, I think I went back and did one last highlight coat of bright gold, but it went very fast.
Panels had their wash, trim it be applied then I trying a purple wash over the gold before adding highlights.
Which yes will mean three trips around for them at least.
I do enjoy it as well but my back doesn't. This was 40 minutes effort and had to stop.
It's just amazing how much his got. And then seeing the look after is crazy good.
It depends on the angle. For nooks and crannies I use the tip. For long edges I use the side. An example being: space marine shoulder pads, the trims I use the side. Whereas painting the aquila I use the tip.
Its looking good bro! Here is my [finished one](https://www.deviantart.com/tomchile/art/Ultramarines-Primarch-Roboute-Guilliman-Finish-04-980044060)! = ) I think your's will look better but it's not a competition haha = )

I cheated and painted Lord Commander Guilliman.
If you look at the shin I tested dry brushing.
I have since finished the trim and washed with purple and highlighted back over the bulk with a mix of dry brushing and layer work like a very controlled dry brush type deal.
I do have some panel touch up to do then it's on to all the little bits and making him really pop up.
I used it do a brown coat first in the old days but retributor gold even thinned gives a reasonable enough coat that the base isn't needed.
I know in some spots the blue is still showing but that is just part of the process in what I have planned, plus a second patching coat for larger bits if needed.
Arguably my least favorite 40k miniature. It's not just a bear to paint, but it has so little space for the painter. Want to do give it some ambient lighting? Death by trim. A nice gradient? Around the trim! NMM? Yes, on all the trim! It's clear that the sculptor was thinking of how busy a man would be leading the empire, and decided to make a design that is just as busy. There he goes, the Trimarch of the Ultramarines! All that is missing is, say 50 purity seals in the back, as if they were the smoke and the flies of the Typhus model
When you look at the versions of RG painted by golden demon winners, they aren't all that much better than those painted by us in the Army+ crowd. Minimal ability to express anything, other than your dedication to putting the right reflections on the trim.
Do your best brother! our prayers are with you.
Should have asked a Thousand Sons player how to tackle this. Your life would've been much easier if you'd started with a gold basecoat on the whole model instead of blue. It's much easier to fill in the recessed areas.
I didn't notice the trim and plate on the halo and wings, and just coloured those in I must say doing trim for me is preferable for appearance. If I was going for a quick paint job I'd likely go down the gold base coat, fill surfaces in, then dry brush high lights onto trim then wash down making the drybrush marks onto the surface become wear marks.
It’s a lot, but personally I didn’t find it all that bad or frustrating. Just took my time in sections, no rush.
Now if I was a chaos player I’d flat out ignore that they have any trim because F that.
I kinda cheated my Gman trim. I paint my army as Deathwatch but play them as UM mostly. So my Gman with his black armour and leadbelcher trim was far more forgiving compared to gold trim on blue.
Black prime, with white prime over top highlighting details, black was done with him in many parts, white assembled with blue tac.
Then thinned down maggragge blue air brushed.
Didn't like that so used Kantor blue and done a heavy dry brushing over then lightening with Calgar blue.
Finished with a drukakki blue wash wash.
I have butchered the paint names but hopefully close enough to get you there.
This model kept me busy for a month
https://preview.redd.it/4fqoafs6vhhc1.jpeg?width=2183&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d3642b14c0a06452777128f83d1abc40236682dd
I think knights trim are really boring with time too because they are massive and you cant one coat it cause thick paint are more obvious on bigger surfaces
Tons of fun, I enjoy painting the trim, good training for brush control. I painted my CSM, Roboute and now I will go and paint some rubric marines. Yay. help.
you were at least we're smart enough to use subassemblies. I was not, and I also decided Bobby G would be a great mini to cut teeth on nmm..... it is currently blue and brown only 😂
edit: corrected autocorrect
Not gonna lie, I started using a gold sharpie for all my chaos marines. Makes life a lot easier and once you varnish them it stays.
Question from a newbie: Is there a way to remove sharpie marks if you botch it? Just curious!
I’ve never done sharpie and haven’t seen it but if I had to say probably just paint your base color back over it.
Sharpie shows through paint. Even black sharpie will be seen under black paint.
Damn
If you're wanting to leave the underlying paint, just paint over it. Sharpie would be very thin compared to all but a glaze in terms of paint layers. If your want to remove the whole thing, alcohol will take it off as easily or more so than the rest of the paint.
I believe Sharpie markers have a solvent in them that will keep eating through the paint.
In my experience with acrylic paint, idk abt citadels, yes. Sharpies are alcohol based ink. They can be removed with alcohol, hand sanitizer, and acetone. Don't do the last one as it will ruin the plastic.
I have found it rubs off from my sweaty hands sometimes. I should probably wear gloves while I paint.
Sharpie also comes off incredibly easily with 99% alcohol, just dab some on with a cotton bud
That will also remove non varnished paint almost immediately. That's how I strip paint of minis.
And also memories of poor decisions made in a life long past.
Isopropyl alcohol. 90%. Will remove some of the primer too, though.
That's no big deal the residue provides enough 'key' for paint to latch on.
You could use alcohol to clean it, but if you do that you risk damaging the paint underneath
Isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab.
Paint over, but also it does rub off easy when dry with a q tip in my experience. So after I’ve used one I mat or gloss clear coat it after
Rubbing alcohol should remove it. However, it might remove primer, too.
It makes gw paints and primer come off to the touch in seconds.
Came here to say this. Luke from Geek Gaming Scenics introduced me to the gold sharpie base and it revolutionised my capacity for doing this much gold trim.
I do the same thing for my Adeptus Titanicus collection.

Not a bad idea really. Thanks for sharing!
The 10 Custodes I am painting with gold trim thank you for this idea kind sir!
One whole rubric Marines worth of trim
Yeah as a tsons player I always laugh at these marine people who have to do trim on one singular model.
Thats why i start by akr brushing all tson gold
I do the same, but you still have to fill in the panels. Not to mention all the little details… and the blue and yellow stripes…
I did the airbrush gold way and I doubt it saved any time. Just changed the style of pain.
I made the fun mistake of air brushing my helldrake gold. Filling in 200000999 panels blue sucked ass Also the last hell drake I’m getting
Not if you paint em like ghosts. Painting 1 rubric marine single handedly made me change my paint scheme for the entire army.
Tbh im kind of enjoying to paint it i dont really get what the deal is with that?!
Yeah it’s therapeutic
Some people just want to slap a couple coats on and be done without spending a ton of time painting fiddly bits/trim.
at that point just prime him blue and drybrush on some gold tho
Which is exactly why I based in gold then filled the panels in red https://preview.redd.it/qlszyl7y0ghc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a4c78f3bb9d0ea020ccac3f92027c11471841347
Now that is a gorgeous sorceror!
That is sharp, I like it
Can confirm
100% came here to say this
Literally said this as soon as I saw it
I've timed myself and can now do one rubric's trim in 30min
And on a much bigger model too!
*Laughs in Chaos*
*Weeps in Thousands Sons*
Those that know, know...
Beat me to it
At least chaos you can kinda butch them to look dirty [except anything thousand sons & tzeench]
https://preview.redd.it/y53eaopiuehc1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60eab456c666ed3b1ecfe94b39df808d902a5ef0
God, he is such a terribly proportioned sculpt lol
How
Hip to torso ratio is just wack He looks dope as long as you don't focus on the sculpt to hard lmao
Earthworm Jim vibes
Let's start with the thigh-gap you could drive a truck through.
That's all marines and 95% of humanoids. If you want a model to be easy to paint and to look good at a distance, there are some sacrifices to be made. The hands and feets are much bigger. The thigh gap could fit a third leg. The torso is bigger. The lower legs are thicker than the upper legs and so on.
Roboute's thigh gap could fit his own body. His legs are attached to the sides of his abdomen, not the bottom.
He looks like a top heavy goofball with skinny jeans, add the bizarre hip rotation posing and you get one very odd lookin’ dude lol
Just be thankful you’re not a Thousand Sons player… they have it A LOT worse
My wife collects thousand sons 🤣 occasionally I help out but told her just get a sharpie. She is leagues above me in artistic stuff but folded after the 3rd rubric 😆
I do have a full sisters army, but I had a process for sisters so it's became easy. Ultra boys are not my space marines I'm a dark angels guy, so no process for the basics, plus this big boy is extra special.
What's your process for sisters?
I just know the model style, my hands can do the work with muscle memory. Of course I'm not gonna have that with prime boy gilly.
It’s almost as much as invocatus. About on par with the average khorne berserker.
Have you tried metalic sharpies?
I have in past, I just don't like the finish, plus I want more colours and shades over the top because I want him on the shelf more than the table.
Have you tried paint markers or Gundam markers (which is the same thing but slightly more purpose-built for models)? They have more shades and colors in most arts'n'crafts stores.
Heldrake.
Do it the other way around. Spray the trim colour then just fill the flat panels.
Have plans for shades over the trim so I'd still have a few runs. However i done that with chaos boy on base and it worked well enough.
This is how you do it: Base color for trims, use wash for whole model, drybrush it and then fill with blue.
https://preview.redd.it/xxfewt61bghc1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6901b3a9299f092ae094b1e39deb82c96e678220 Trim?
That honestly looks pretty sick
Excuse my ignorance, but english is not my main language. What is Trim?
Trim would be the gold edge.
Oh, yeah, that looks like a nightmare to paint. Thanks, you're doing good. Better take your time with that Trim.
I play Ultras but I do not plan to field Robot Guyman until I’ve got at least a year’s worth of free time to open to painting
a purple orc waring some of Guilliman's armor
Gotta admit it looks cool as shit tho.
In cases like this I prime with a can of Retributor Armour and then colour in the non-gold bits.
This guy chaos marines
It’s all fun and games until they swirl, or it’s just a Heldrake and it’s endless trim
Good sir... I paint Custodes with a black base for the armour and gold on the details. It's ALL swirls
Has anyone ever told you the tragedy of thousand sons trim …
Try thousand sons
Honestly teenage me wanted them but had no money, I'm happy that adult me with money isn't interested in them beyond enjoying other people's hard work.
If I were to play and paint these days I would go for thousand sons because they appeal but my skills are so far from what is required. I'll just continue to admire from afar.
@Tsons players... why torture yourselves so?
Because double doombolt.
Kudos to anyone that tackles nonmetallic metal on this guy.
I think I must be one of the few people that actually dislike non-metallic metal, although I wouldn't mind learning to do it at some point more for the control aspects needed.
Yeah it can be to taste, but it is a great showing of the painter's skill level.
Nah I also think it looks goofy.
I’m also not a fan, looks great in photos but for me can look a bit odd when in the flesh under natural light. But each to there own
https://preview.redd.it/jnptszr13hhc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=323dea3d1e603130170ff5877018c50b529e0e24 Just finished mine a few weeks ago! The trim is crazy!
https://preview.redd.it/hy87ahi2ijhc1.jpeg?width=2211&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36bd17c1caf4fd9a644da6a176a4f8170f0b4904 I found it easier to spray him gold and shade/drybrush/highlight all the trim first, then I painted in the blue. After sealing him, I think I went back and did one last highlight coat of bright gold, but it went very fast.
Dude it looks great, but what I do, is usually mix my washes and apply them at this stage
Panels had their wash, trim it be applied then I trying a purple wash over the gold before adding highlights. Which yes will mean three trips around for them at least.
Perfect. I usually add blue to gold. So I get it
He really puts the meaning into “Daddy’s golden boy”
Once the trim is done, the rest is a snap. Trust me I've been there
Well his 90% trim yeah. Lol
Something I've heard every so often is just priming the model gold to make life easier in painting.
I just recently built him and he's part of my 2k points list, I'm gunna have to do this at some point...pray for me.
According to comments base coat in gold, I may have made more work for myself.
Call me crazy but his trims are fun to do. Might just be me though.
I do enjoy it as well but my back doesn't. This was 40 minutes effort and had to stop. It's just amazing how much his got. And then seeing the look after is crazy good.
Oh for sure! Even with me enjoying it, I HAD to take breaks. But look on the upside, you’re improving your brush control.
Did you find using the side of the brush as opposed to the tip is major control helper?
It depends on the angle. For nooks and crannies I use the tip. For long edges I use the side. An example being: space marine shoulder pads, the trims I use the side. Whereas painting the aquila I use the tip.
I'm guessing the gold sharpie would great for both Thousand Sons and World Eaters, especially for the combat patrols for both
I'm new to the community so i might be missing something but thus far i think trim is super fun to do
I enjoy it, but it's impressive just how much trim they managed to get on him.
I dry brushed the gold on, it worked well for me.
If you look at the shin, that was the dry brush test spot, lol. to uncontrolled for my desires.
Its looking good bro! Here is my [finished one](https://www.deviantart.com/tomchile/art/Ultramarines-Primarch-Roboute-Guilliman-Finish-04-980044060)! = ) I think your's will look better but it's not a competition haha = )

Clearly you've never painted a helldrake. Anyone who has more than one of those fuckers fully painted either has a will of iron or brain damage.
His trim work is the single reason my son picked DA over UM
Agrax earthshade saves the day
I'm getting lingerie vibes. Love it
The temptation to dry brush must be immense.
If you look at the shin I tested dry brushing. I have since finished the trim and washed with purple and highlighted back over the bulk with a mix of dry brushing and layer work like a very controlled dry brush type deal. I do have some panel touch up to do then it's on to all the little bits and making him really pop up.
Its... beautiful!!!😱😍
Now imagine doing this trim 200 more times and you'll know what it's like to be a chaos player.
For a ultramarine, I think it looks quite demonic... like a champion of Tzeentch
I know it would seem like more work but personally I think you should paint the trim black first. I think it makes it easier for everything else.
I used it do a brown coat first in the old days but retributor gold even thinned gives a reasonable enough coat that the base isn't needed. I know in some spots the blue is still showing but that is just part of the process in what I have planned, plus a second patching coat for larger bits if needed.
Yeah. Guilimans is worse than painting chaos trim lol
Still super well done though
Sounds weird I know but it's easier to start from a gold base and fill in the blue after imo
Only 10% more trim on him than the average chaos marine lol
Arguably my least favorite 40k miniature. It's not just a bear to paint, but it has so little space for the painter. Want to do give it some ambient lighting? Death by trim. A nice gradient? Around the trim! NMM? Yes, on all the trim! It's clear that the sculptor was thinking of how busy a man would be leading the empire, and decided to make a design that is just as busy. There he goes, the Trimarch of the Ultramarines! All that is missing is, say 50 purity seals in the back, as if they were the smoke and the flies of the Typhus model When you look at the versions of RG painted by golden demon winners, they aren't all that much better than those painted by us in the Army+ crowd. Minimal ability to express anything, other than your dedication to putting the right reflections on the trim. Do your best brother! our prayers are with you.
Undercoat gold! The way Duncan intended!
Laughs in thousand sons.
Would it be easier to prime him gold and then fill in the empty spaces?
But look at the amazing job you’ve done if it so far 🤩
Emperors bowels....oof. I just got mine assembled and am not looking forward to this trim work.
Thousand sons players: first time?
Time to break out the Kolisnky Masterclass and magnifying glass.
Csm: first time?
You ca do base coat all gold then just fill in blue
Paint him entirely gold, then paint everything but the trim, easy solution
I found it easier to start with the trim and fill the gaps!
Now go paint a CSM army.
I really wanted to give up painting altogether and I did it the easier way. Primed gold then painting the inside blue
XD. Space favorites player discovers how it is to paint single chaos marine of any kind xd
If he had any more trim it might just be faster to spray paint him gold and then use a wash to paint the blue parts.
The original drip king, hope to tackle him myself one day.
Almost as bad as removing those mould lines right?
Your blue is very nice though.
*laughs in CSM*
Mild for anyone who's ever painted a chaos space marine army
Strip it and start from gold
Looks like quite an ordeal. Good luck!
Should try fulgrims og primarch models trim 😭😭
Laughs in world eaters trim
He's like the ultimate Chaos Lord with all that trim...
This looks like a dry brush and a half to me. But this is me being lazy.
It’s a lot, but personally I didn’t find it all that bad or frustrating. Just took my time in sections, no rush. Now if I was a chaos player I’d flat out ignore that they have any trim because F that.
If I ever get big G I think I’m going to try the reverse wash technique.
Wait untill you paint that one particular plague marine 😫
I kinda cheated my Gman trim. I paint my army as Deathwatch but play them as UM mostly. So my Gman with his black armour and leadbelcher trim was far more forgiving compared to gold trim on blue.
just paint him gold and fill the rest in with blue lol
Push on through....
What is trim? Is it just the gold bits?
Can I ask how you primed him ? And did for the blue armor
Thank you very much collect the boys in blue and wanna get him but afraid to make him look bad
You can only ever do your best, and by doing so your best will improve. Watch loads of painting YouTube videos as well for ideas to try out.
Laughs in 30k emperors children and 40k 1k sons.
At least you didn't choose to do it in non-metallic metal.
The greatest part of the trim memes is that the pain is VERY real.
This model kept me busy for a month https://preview.redd.it/4fqoafs6vhhc1.jpeg?width=2183&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d3642b14c0a06452777128f83d1abc40236682dd
Seems like it'd be easier to just prime it gold and block in the blue after
Roboute Trimmyman
I’m also painting this overly trimmed rowboat. Good luck my battle brother
And that's why I started gold and filled in the blue with a metallic ink.
I think knights trim are really boring with time too because they are massive and you cant one coat it cause thick paint are more obvious on bigger surfaces
Laughs in CSM
Isn't it easier to base him in gold and paint in the blue?
AoS player but laughs in Slaanesh Mortals
It’s actually not that bad since he’s a big model, would paint him a million times over Vs sisters or something like tsons
Tons of fun, I enjoy painting the trim, good training for brush control. I painted my CSM, Roboute and now I will go and paint some rubric marines. Yay. help.
Gucci style
Laughing in thousand sons
Gold sharpie (or equivalent) all the way here!
Just started and did the flag on the sisters of battle zephyrim and thought that was bad. This is like that on steroids
No meme, it sucks to paint
I feel like a gold paint marker would do better than sharpie like the other comments say
Why not base in ak gold and then fill in the blue?
https://preview.redd.it/17v6a9hfm2ic1.jpeg?width=556&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ffc3272ad9f1c1b8cef3d09566c03bac30c651bc
If gman man wasn't relaxing and fun... Never think about tsons lol
you were at least we're smart enough to use subassemblies. I was not, and I also decided Bobby G would be a great mini to cut teeth on nmm..... it is currently blue and brown only 😂 edit: corrected autocorrect
I have him built in subassembly but not primed yet. I'm already having a headache looking at mine with the amount of trim gorilla man has 😔😭😂
