>This is my first time watching an edition change, and it feels like most everyone is unhappy with it. Is this normal when a new edition starts? The people happy about the changes don't keep talking about it online, they go build/play/paint. Complaints stick around. This is a normal edition change.

narfjono

In comparison to 9th or 8th? Legit asking as I only started *very* tail end of 9th.

Papa_Poppa

9th had notoriously bad power creep as codexes came out, and you can bet your top dollar that the subreddits were going crazy with complaints during that time. So yeah, business as usual.

Halthanas

Hi! Of course, the unhappy people are the loudest. I've been playing 40k since the 6th edition. In my humble opinion (and the opinion of my gaming group) 10th edition is a step down from the 9th (which was my favorite). 10th is, for me, the worst of the 5 edition i've played. Having a bad codex and rules always happen from an edition to another. Sometime, you're lucky and other time, you're sad. I'm a tyranid player since the 6th edition and the problem with this edition rule for this faction is that it is not fun to play and it is not lore-accurate. They change the playstyle of the faction from an hyper-aggressive and versatile playstyle to an objective grabbing-objective denial playstyle with a forced attrition playstyle where your bugs dies and does nothing in return. Maybe its going to be better next edition. For me, i'm not playing them for the moment, bidding my time for the next edition. (love the new models though) People tends to be very unhappy when their army are bad or forgotten not because they are bad people, toxic or crybaby but because the hobby is very expensive and time-consuming. So much time and money in plastic dude that does not make the game fun anymore is, understandably, quite vexing. My gaming group and I have switched to Killteam for the time being. It pretty fun and it is what this is all about: fun. Try the 10th edition and juge for yourself if you like it. (and try killteam!) (Long post, sorry)

TrustAugustus

I'm someone who started in 3rd and faded out in 4th due to a lackluster Dark Angels codex (and college) What I like about 10th (coming from 4th): ° vehicles are more powerful. Having a vehicle and needing to move it was always painful. It worse any glancing hit. °more units! But less customizable. I miss my Terminator Apothecary... °online rules updates! In 4th Dark Angels storm shield was a 4++ in combat only while generic Marines had a 3++ in both phases... °characters buffing units instead of just being beat sticks. What I don't like: °stuck at Min or Max squads. °characters locked to certain wargear ° no models no rules.

VVAR_Aarius

Well said. Rabbit trail and tin foil hat time: do you think GW is making 40K less attractive so that more players gravitate to the new product game (HH and Kill team)?

Halthanas

No, I do not think this is the case. Every decision GW take is about making money. 40k is their main cash cow. they certainly won’t try to diminished its appeal. 10th edition was meant to streamline the rule so it would be easier for new customers to get in the game. the whole combat patrol thing follow this trend. the streamlining has its appeal for some and other like it less. but it is easier for new player to get in the hobby. they might, after, gravitate toward the specialist and skirmish games.

SoulBlightRaveLords

I've been playing since 5th, it's probably my favourite edition since 5th/6th. I only have vague memories of 7th and 8th, 9th was bloated as fuck but 10th just feels smooth to play, yeah they've taken a lot of the crunchy stuff out I used to like but they've also streamlined the game a lot so it doesn't have to last an entire day

Shortbowsocietypaint

Everyone isn’t unhappy about it. Warhammer40K has never been more popular. What you’re seeing is the whiners be the loudest part of the fandom. They aren’t the majority though.

Admech343

Thats surprising to me. Its never been less popular in my area. Maybe I’m the odd one out but pretty much everyone I know from the 8th-10th era either plays less, plays older editions, or doesn’t play 40k at all anymore. Theres some new people sure but the old guard seems to be mostly gone

No-Choice7498

Something being popular doesn’t mean it’s good, I only wish GW was as good at writing rules as they are at marketing lol

krung_the_almighty

You should probably this into a poll post if possible. I’ve been playing since 7th and it’s my favorite.

Letholdus13131313

So I've played since 6th edition and kept up with the changes ever since. Ive seen the high's and lows that each system brought, really enjoyed some of those changes, disagreed with others. Armies got powerful and then were sent to timeout. All of that is normal and the community has reacted as it does. For my own personal opinion, 10th lost a lot of flavor and fun. Armies became less palpable to helm and even when they were granted a codex, a lot of the narrative drive that would boost that army and flesh out just wasn't there. So far there the Ork codex is the only rules book that blends both the narrative fun and the competitive fun very well. The main rules I don't have much an opinion on because its just another edition. What I will always applaud though is the mission decks. Its design and execution is so freaking fun and keeps the game flowing with how things can always change depending on the cards you draw. I wish their other systems did something similar. Regardless, I set the game aside and focused on Sigmar, 30K, Old World, Warcry and Bloodbowl (they are wonderful fun and I suggest you at least look into them). Now! I feel silly for overlooking this but what got me and my friends back into 40k is the Crusade system. It brought back a lot of the narrative fun we had in the past and with the other systems GW has available. I definitely feel like Im actually building "my army" in Crusade.

ColeDeschain

I'm a crusty old fossil who played in the tail end of 3rd through early 5th edition, then dropped until 10th. I barely recall the switch from 3rd to 4th- some things changed, but I had so few games under my belt I don't really recall them. The switch from 4th to 5th was relatively minor in terms of core rules- but the codex rules for armies changed, sometimes radically, in ways I disliked. C'est la vie. After being out so long and missing so many changes, 10th is a seismic change for me- but having missed most of 5th edition, and all of 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th, I can't really say the magnitude of the change is one I'm really qualified to make. But in general, there are rules aspects I really hate, to the point where I'm digging up my old books and looking into playing older edition games. But that doesn't mean 10th is *bad*- it means I personally don't much care for it. There's a difference there.

MLantto

10th is the best edition I've played so far. The scoring is the most dynamic version yet and make the game really really good. The streamlines army rules and strats makes it so that I can go to tournaments and have a chance to understand what my opponent is doing even if I only play a couple of games a month inbetween. There have been some missteps, but most ppl complaining are ones who just don't like change I think.

bullet312

The new model sucks man. Skatros look like those clowns you see at fairs. You know they could have given us some cool vehicle or an awesome new robot or something but nah... That dude with his balls hanging to the ground

nigelhammer

Nah it's just internet whiners, most people are having a great time no matter what faction they play.

Raspint

I'm actually really glad to hear that.

choppermeir

I started playing when 10th came out so I have no comparison but, I'm really enjoying it

geekfreak41

10th seems to be bringing in a lot of people, either that or some cosmic energy seems to be drawing people to tabletop gaming. Last night at my local, small town shop there were 11 matches of 40k going on (22 people). I came back to 40k with 10th after being gone since 3rd. I'm enjoying the game, and my kid and their friends are loving it. I like that balance updates are frequent and that most armies seem balanced or are slated to be fixed. I like that within the factions I am familiar with there are a lot of different builds. I don't like that they completely gutted psychics as I used to love my psychic characters.

HamBone8745

Been playing since the end of 4th ed and I love 10th. But then again I love every edition. Sure, there are some things I don’t care for (like how Fly works now, so stupid) but thats every single edition. I just love playing 40k man. Ill play till the day I die. Being married to a certain rules set, be it Core Rules or Codex, is a road that will always lead to disappointment because they constantly change.

Coveninho

I am old. And I am happy about beeing old. So no bad feelings here. :) I started with the second edition in 1997. We got the 3rd Edition in 1998 in Germany. So this was the first time I felt betrayed by GW: Noone told me that my 300+ DM Game would be expired not even one year after the purchase. But I kept playing in 3rd and 4th edition. And during 5th I think I have played the most games ever. I kept playing in 6th and 7th. Even if they had those terrible hullpoints. I realy liked 8th even with the rulesbloat. I invested more then 330€ just in rulebooks for my armies and the two campaignbooks. Then COVID came and the 9th edition with its terrible powercreep. And because of C... I could not play a single game till 2022... Still for me all these editions felt better than the 10th edition. Including every fluff problem with primaris etc. that I don't own. What I want from 40K seems to be different from what others want. I spend time and effort in my models: building and painting them. I want them to survive the first round. In that Case I have not been satisfied in any edition since the 5th. OC it all could be romantic flashbacks without seeing the drawbacks of that time (deathstars). But as other players in my Bubble have similar problems with the game I still do not think that it's just me. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Maybe us old guys just want a different game with equaly cool Models and grimdark background. 😁

Elegant-Mammoth5249

I only have a problem with 10th is the wargear cost. Alot of unit options get straight up ignored because why take the less powerfull option? All SM marine army are almost the same.

Admech343

Its pretty bad imo. Very bland and unflavorful. Might be good as an intro to tabletop wargaming but theres not really any depth or mastery beyond that. Its the most basic and simplified ruleset I’ve ever seen for a tabletop game and is honestly more similar to a card game than a traditional wargame

Vahjkyriel

new editions always get some annoyed players of course, but yes 10th is so far the worst edition so it gets lot more justified critique.

Ezcendant

There are certainly some weak codices, but the game is in a great spot overall and it's the best edition I've played. Vibe at tourneys is basically the same.

PossibleChangeling

As someone playing 40K for the first time, I am shocked to hear this is the most balanced it's ever been. And this really is a common opinion shared by the community. I like the streamlined rules personally, I can't imagine what it would be like to teach people this game if it was more complicated. I've taught people 10th in an hour just using Combat Patrols. The way the edition is designed is important is important to understand why people are vocal in disliking aspects of it. It receives 2-4 points updates per year, and 2 major balance updates per year as well as multiple codexes. Codexes radically alter playable armies and introduce nearly all of the playable options that army will have for this edition. Most of the codexes feature 4-6 detachments which are basicallly the *most important* decision in making your army beyond what army you're even playing. So, a lot of the discontent is coming from how the detachments are designed. Space Marines, Tyranids, Admech and Custodes all have some really hit or miss detachments, and, with detachments being the main ways you play an army, having the *majority* of detachments currently released via codexes being bad is what's upsetting a lot of people. Sure, Admech doesn't get to use its already awful army rule. Sure, Custodes lost a big part of their strength which does hurt them a lot. But the real kicker is that a lot of detachments are awful, and people are having to wait a long time to get them fixed, with GW being... sort of dicks about how they're not balancing it. A lot of people thought a major balance update was coming last week, with even a lot of content creators like Poorhammer thinking it was coming, and it sucks as an Admech or Tyranid player to learn that you have to suffer through the state of your codex for months now. I'm a new player, so older players tell me if I'm wrong, but I really feel from what I've heard that the edition is a positive step forward for the game. Balance is doing a lot better, lots of armies have a lot of options. But it feels like they took two huge steps forward and then took a huge step back, and a lot of people are further back than others and people are getting sick of GW not really paying attention to aspects of their game. I can get why people are upset that this multi-million dollar property is being balanced less than a mobile game.

Raspint

So as a tyranid player who hasn't played a game in an actual year, and has mostly been collecting, painting and such, now is not a good time for my faction eh?

PossibleChangeling

You can 100% still play them. I play Genestealers and have fun. But just know that you may be a little frustrated at some units not filling their niche super well.

derp4532

It's a ok. The only people who are bitching are meta gamers and people who can't move on from shit

No-Choice7498

Models are still amazing, game is still trash, same old GW

Smashing_Potatoes

Anytime change occurs in all things, someone will fart out of their mouth about it.

SaladPuzzleheaded625

Been around the hobby sinxe 3rd but only started playing seriously in 8th. 10th is definitely my favorite of the last three. Been playing it way more than 9th and having a much better time.

IntelligentCash183

I Play since the third edition and it was always the same! For me the 10th edition is much better then the 9th and the power level of everything is much better atm! (Ofc there are always some exceptions!) It is a really good to play and I think the codex’s are much more fluffy then before which I appreciate!
