Fairy ring. Mushroom mycelium germinates under the grass and grows outward in a uniform circle. The outer actively growing ring breaks down soil into easily digestible material for the grass causing it to grow better "darker, lusher, taller.

Thanks for this explanation, I always wondered how they formed. Remember seeing lots of "fairy rings" in the grass when I was younger but can't remember the last time I saw one. Why are they are less common now?

I have actually seen this effect from helicopters landing in a field, and it lasted for years... But it matched the diameter of the rotors. So it could be a fairy ring... Or it could be an RC heli... Think a heavy drone would look different.
