You should watch 2011 finals where they refused to lose and beat USA. At that WC, many were rooting for Japan as the team had to train in darkness for a period of time due to post earthquake. Even the entire German team whom they beat attended the finals to cheer them on.
They beat the 2 strongest and favourites to win the trophy.
They still have to beat The Netherlands in order to qualify, and the Dutch won't go down without a fight. Other teams have already qualified (like the US and France) or have significantly easier paths to qualifying (Japan just has to beat North Korea in a two match tie and same for Australia against Uzbekistan). I think Spain would still be one of the favorites *if* they qualify, but since we still don't know whether they'll be in the tournament, they naturally have a lower chance of winning it.
Edit: Spain has a second path to qualification. If France beats Germany, then there's an extra spot available from UEFA (France qualified automatically as hosts and UEFA gets another two spots). That means that if France beats Germany, the loser of Spain vs The Netherlands can qualify by beating Germany in the 3rd place match.
Roord is now out injured. Van der Gragt messed up against Spain but then scored to redeem herself. She tended to make a lot of errors but the Dutch team was still better with her in it and she is now retired. Spain should be considered the favorites in that match.
Spain are probably the favourites, but I wouldn't count the Dutch out. They have Miedema back now, she should have some more game time under her belt by February. They will also have van de Donk for this game - she was suspended for the QF but has been in quite good form at Lyon. They will most likely play Egurrola in Roords's place, who has also been playing really well right now. You're right the back line is a problem. It won't be easy for them, but it's not impossible.
Would Miedema play striker again or would they put her into the midfield? Especially with Roord out the Dutch could be very reliant upon Miedema and Martens which isn't great. If Miedema isn't going to start as the striker then I like Romée Leuchter more than both Lineth Beerensteyn and Katja Snoeijs.
Pelova has been fine but Kerstin Casparij has impressed me and I think she is both defensive and good enough offensively to be versatile. She could play in the Dutch 3 back or a traditional 4 back. Pelova seems to be rated more despite not being as good defensively and not being able to play in a traditional back 4.
If the Dutch were to move to a back 4 then they could chance it with Brugts at left back and have a very attacking left back which could pay off. Alternatively she could play left winger and as she is one of their most important players having her further up the field would help the team.
I just don't know what the Dutch are going to go for and I don't rate their players exactly as their manager does. Also ultimately Spain will have possession in that game and Japan and England were the two teams at the World Cup to give Spain the most trouble. I think both of those teams are better defensively than the Dutch are.
No yeah, I agree, they should be favorites in that match and would be favorites in that 3rd place match if it came to that. But even if we say they have a, say, 80% chance of qualifying, Japan has gotta have at least a 95% chance, and France has a 100% chance. So whatever chance Spain would have to win the tournament assuming they qualify has to be cut down by at least something like 20% to account for the chance they don't qualify. That makes me feel like it's early to call Spain favorites to win the Olympics. But that's just my opinion, of course!
Your logic is sound from a playing the odds or gambling point of view.
I haven't watched any of Spain's games since the World Cup but I watched a number of them prior to the World Cup and then the Cup itself. They were so dominant that they looked like the clear favorites to win the World Cup. No team has won the World Cup and then the Olympics back to back so the odds are against Spain but they were dominant at the World Cup and tension with their coaches and FA has likely lessened.
Logic says Spain won't repeat because they have to qualify and no team has ever won the World Cup and Olympics back to back. Vibes dictate that Spain will win. We'll see if logic or vibes prevail.
As I’m half Australian and half French I’m hoping either one. Probably Aus is unlikely, especially with Sam out, but would love to get a podium placement this time. Then I think France takes gold.
England/GB is out for the Olympics and I think the USA will be going through some growing pains with Emma having just joined. Obviously Spain yes, but it being in France I think will give the French team an edge.
I don’t think there’s a clear favorite yet expect probably Spain and maybe the US. The current World Cup winner has never gone on to win the following Olympics so Spain will have that “curse” working against them and will have a new coach and hopefully new culture which could work for better or worse. The US team has the talent, but just hasn’t clicked yet and with a small transition of when Emma comes it could go either way.
France and Japan will probably have a good tournament and have a good chance at gold. Canada, Brazil, and Germany (pending qualification) will all also looking to rebound after a disappointing World Cup
Hard to predict, the WC showed us there's many great teams, I'm going to guess France.
Especially with the fantastic new coach, I look forward to seeing better performance from US, and hope very much Australia does well, but missing Kerr makes that harder.
You never know how the draw is going to play out, but I think Spain. Yes, they still have to qualify but if they don’t beat the Dutch, I think they get a life (because France are likely to beat Germany).
I agree with everyone saying Spain, Netherlands or Japan. I think ultimately Spain will qualify but that is going to be the most interesting match this year and it’s still just qualifications. Netherlands we’re probably the closest threat to Spain in the WC and now they’ll have DVD and Miedema back, so even with Roord out this will give them a huge boost. Japan will be super determined after what happened at Tokyo and the WC. So with Sweden not there who seem to be their kryptonite I think they’ll go far. My guess is a Spain v Japan final.
unlikely… The world has caught up and the soccer culture in the USA (accessibility to young players to play, pay to play etc) is against them.
There needs to be a huge culture shift in US youth and education to make up for that I think.
Assuming they qualify Spain are the obvious favourites having just won the World Cup. Although that can be a bit of a curse too as nobody has won the Olympics straight after winning the World Cup.
France had a lot of players missing at the World Cup and could be stronger this summer, especially with home support. USA and Japan will likely be serious contenders too.
Given the teams that have qualified so far (France, USA, Canada, Brazil, Colombia), I'd say that France and the USA are clear favorites heading into the tournament: France for host nation reasons + a really strong team, and the USA having Emma Hayes as a boost. Brazil is also a powerful team, so it's good to look out for them, and Canada being the defending gold medallists have a good chance too. Colombia could cause some upsets here and there.
I've seen some posts saying that Japan are favorites, and while I understand that, we'll have to see how they do against North Korea in the third round of the OQTs for Asia. If they do qualify, then Japan are also in good shape to progress far into the tournament. Meanwhile, while I think Australia's chances of the winning aren't the best, they can prove to be tough competition for the stronger teams.
As for the European teams, Spain has a good chance of qualifying and will thus become instant favorites if they qualify. But we'll have to see how their match against the Netherlands goes. Germany I think will qualify but I doubt that they'll be one of the biggest contenders after their WWC performance + some poor results in the Nations League.
I'm actually very excited to know what African teams will qualify (based on the draw I think it's Nigeria and Morocco who qualify) as I feel like some of them (Nigeria in particular) can cause some upsets in the tournament. For Oceania, I think New Zealand will qualify for the tournament and I'm not sure that they can progress far.
So here are the teams that I think will qualify, along with the teams that have qualified, and my personal ranking on their chances to win the gold medal: (* means team hasn't officially qualified yet)
1. Spain*
2. France
3. USA
4. Japan*
5. Germany*
6. Canada
7. Brazil
8. Australia*
9. Colombia
10. Nigeria*
11. New Zealand*
12. Morocco*
Spain has some stars but you can't count out the American girls during these big competitions. Regardless, please make sure to watch if you want the game to grow!
I'm going to say Japan. Because they seem to be the only team who can beat Spain. Otherwise, I think Spain.

Just rewatched Japan’s win against the USA in the World Cup 2011, and wow, real underdog energy

Did something happen to Spain or something?

When's the Spain vs Netherlands game? Will it be available in the states? I'd love to watch it.
I'm not sure where it can be watched in the US, but I imagine there should be some way to do so? Either way, it's on the 23rd of February.
Ahh good. Gives me time to prepare 👍🏻 thanks 😁
A VPN is your best friend, but i think DAZN is available in the US anyway and they will likely broadcast it.
Ahh nice. I've seen plenty on DAZN's youtube.
Also theyve been on CBSSN occasionally
How are the North Korean women doing now? I swear they were dominating the youth tournaments a few years ago.
As I’m half Australian and half French I’m hoping either one. Probably Aus is unlikely, especially with Sam out, but would love to get a podium placement this time. Then I think France takes gold.

I would love us to win but the odds are stacked against us. If not us then intellectually England or the US, emotionally Spain.
England/GB is out for the Olympics and I think the USA will be going through some growing pains with Emma having just joined. Obviously Spain yes, but it being in France I think will give the French team an edge.
Of course! I totally spaced on the fact that England/GB didn’t qualify.

We can’t say Spain are clear favourites until they qualify. Totally possible that they lose to Netherlands and Germany beat France.
Germany have qualified
Canada. Awful World Cup performance, we go back to being underdogs and win gold again via parking the bus and pens 🫡
Hard to predict, the WC showed us there's many great teams, I'm going to guess France. Especially with the fantastic new coach, I look forward to seeing better performance from US, and hope very much Australia does well, but missing Kerr makes that harder.
Why is the logo a Karen?

But there's still a chance that Germany qualifies. They improved since the world cup
France, the home advantage. I am rooting for Matilda. Hopefully we get a medal
japan or spain
Looking forward to seeing Japan go all the way
France obviously. Nothing to do with the fact i'm french.
Brazil-il-il!!! 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Japan. I want Yui Hasegawa to be officially a gold medalist
USWNT fan here but ill low key be so happy if Spain gets it
Canada B2B?
Here for this!!
France 🙏🏾
France winning in Paris would be exciting!!

Ill go with a dark horse pick, Orlando Pride win gold at the Olympics.
U-S-A

I can’t wait for them to take the gold
That would be a scenario. But they better win it so it can be given to them.
RemindMe! 2024-08-11
We all know it's going to be Barcelona, I mean Spain 🤷
Gonna go with Japan.

USA are old hat. The world has caught up and there are 2-3 at least teams that are better now.
In time perhaps, but right now USA are still a potential winner. Especially in a 12 team tournament that might only have two European nations.
Spain has some stars? Interesting way to put it.
Better to ask this question once all nations involved have actually qualified lol
🇺🇸🦅
The one… who plays… the best??
Sweden
They did not qualify.
Really LOL fuck me i obviously did not know that. Well…probably not then 🤷♂️
But they keep telling us here how awesome this team is...

Team GB didn’t qualify for the Olympics
Sweden the dark horse🔆
Sweden are already eliminated.
Spain or GB both are dialed in, star studded and well rounded.
Team GB did not qualify as England failed.
Then Spain it is!
I'll wait for the full list to be released to decide.
Aitana
I’m rooting for Brasil
Matildas! 💪
Spain. It won’t be easy, but I think they can do it.
