Is that any good?

Salami__Tsunami

There’s a scene where the main character performs a melee takedown by jumping off the roof of a dropship and applying his nuts to an ADVENT trooper’s face at high velocity. (I don’t care if the show calls them Visitors, they’re ADVENT) This wasn’t even played as a joke, it was the 80’s and this was just the average action scene. But yes. The show is amazing. It’s 80’s as all hell, which may be a pro or a con depending on your tastes. But aside from that it had no right cooking this hard on the ethical issues of running a Resistance movement.

The_Wandering-Bard

I recently made my younger brother sit down and watch it with me. At first he thought it was campy and stupid, then the Jewish kid became a Nazi stormtrooper. After that he was totally on board. The next two weeks were filled with him digging deeper and deeper into the characters' motivation and the way society warped to the whims of the Visitors. He loved it, and he totally predicted the magic baby scene at the end of Final Battle.

Salami__Tsunami

Seeing that traitorous xeno loving collaborator get sent to the kitchens was immensely satisfying.

The_Wandering-Bard

Yeah it really gets me every time. Just the perfect end to his whole miserable story.

Salami__Tsunami

Also I think they did a better and more tactful job of addressing real world societal issues than most modern media.

The_Wandering-Bard

Yeah, re-watching it really felt like I was seeing a morality play set as a cautionary tale for the last couple years and into the future. Very poignant, and incredibly applicable, and my younger brother said it actually helped him understand how some of the historical police states came into being. Back when I watched it the first time I remember thinking that the parallels the show drew to Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union were silly. After all America couldn't possibly fall into that mindset that quickly. Cue Ten years later and I'm locked in my house whenever I am not out pulling double shifts at my Essential job. All the stores have bare shelves in places and you can't go to a public park anymore. So yeah, I think they addressed the real world issues and fears of the time period well, and because they did it so well it resonates with events now.

The worst part about him, is that despite how he became progressively worse from being nudged into being one of the militant collaborators, to enjoying his job, was that he was quite competent. He catches one of the resistance members, finds and kill one of resistance (the old lady) and probably a few other things I’m trying to recall by memory alone. He could had just been a constant butt of jokes but he proved to be one of the visitor’s more valuable assets. So it’s more satisfying to see the aliens throw him under the bus, showing he never meant anything to them.

Salami__Tsunami

Yeah, I really liked that he got put in an actual position of authority instead of just being the pathetic comic relief character. He was a more competent officer than any of the Visitors, probably because he was actually loyal and trustworthy, and did his job instead of trying to climb the ladder. I don’t think their quick turnaround on him was due to him being human, however. As we’ve seen, they’re perfectly happy to do the same to their own people, especially when they’re suspected of treason.

Absoutely the visitors had no concerns turning on each other (think most of that was by Diana, I loved how petty she was) but it’s balanced out that not all of the visitors were as scummy and had a level of standard such as the commander who refused to comply with the self-destruction of the mothership. With Daniel though, he was the only human militant we knew among the visitors and were told early on humans become either food or soldiers. So when he’s told he’ll be basically human chops we get that reminder visitors see humans as food. It also foreshadowed how the visitor that ordered his death would turn on another human (the mother of the main protagonist) despite her support. BUT, I have to admit that isn’t a strong point given she did betray his position when the resistance came and he shot her for it. As weird as it sounds I can’t blame the visitor for doing that, if someone snitched my hiding place while trying to escape I would take that personally as well! Anyway to me the manner of Daniel’s demise shows that despite being competent and working up in ranks he was never their equal despite being led to believe otherwise.

So gum chewing and ass kicking, minus the gum chewing?

One of my favorit sci-fi shows of all time... Saw it the first time back in the 80's when I was maybe 6 years old. My mom allowed me to stay up late to watch it (believe it aired at 10pm). This show was the start of why I have always like Michael Ironside as an actor. XD Not seen any of the show since maybe the 90's though... so may have to revisit it again soon. If for no other reason than nostalgia. :) As a six year old, I totally had a crush on Diana... and then she revealed who she really was... and I was not sure what to think... but it does not have seemed to have made me interested in what they truly are underneeth, luckily. XD ![gif](giphy|CGgUswvhw2DAs|downsized)

irondumbell

she's a viper?

Rhodryn

Reptiles. But more towards the lizard kind than snakes, I think at least, based on the way their heads looks when fully exposed.

thebritwriter

It’s got a good narrative, certinely the original series does a good job. Then there’s v the final battle which I think does well (the ending though is cringe, basically super plot convience saves the day) but Michael ironside character is among the highlights. Then there was another series where they returned and it’s forgettable. Personally the final battle is the best. Regardless the opening intro sound back is great (though I think it may have sampled a bit from terminator)

doglywolf

it is but it was dropped on a cliff hanger just as it was getting good ground . It lost it audience cause it leaned into teen drama a bit heavily at first. It also has Morena Baccarin at her finest ! Also to be clear there are two series the 80s version and the 2000s reboot version version . think above is from the 80s version adverts. Im talking about the 2000s version seems like most people are talking about the 80s version

MILLANDSON

The remake is pretty solid too.

petethecanuck

It's a pretty decent series (better than the 2009 remake IMHO). I remember watching the original miniseries as a kid. I enjoyed the miniseries (both the original and Final Battle) much more than the short lived weekly episodic TV series. Marc Singer is awesome in it!

Salami__Tsunami

I do not acknowledge the existence of the 2009 remake.

vectaur

But, but…Morena Baccarin

SuddenReal

The "problem" with the remake is that it got canned just when it was about to kick off.

doglywolf

It leaned way to heavily in the teen drama - by the time they realized that and course corrected and started to get really good it lost it audience and Morena didnt have the start power back then. She alone could carry it 3-4 seasons now if had dropped now.

Salami__Tsunami

I mean, if it takes two seasons for a show to “kick off”, then I’m not surprised it got canned.

VOLTswaggin

Like The Next Generation?

Salami__Tsunami

Yes, honestly I’m surprised they didn’t get canned.

VOLTswaggin

Pretty sure they were just as surprised. 😆

Salami__Tsunami

Yeah, I don’t know too much about the development process but I know for a fact that they were very close to getting dropped during season 3.

ChronoLegion2

Marc Singer appears in the final episode

nqminhuit
