for some reason my brain learned 8+7=15 really well by associating it with cribbage, which i used to play with my dad when i was little. idk why it still works like that but it does lol
Holy shit, I just wrote the same thing for mine before seeing yours. I'm so happy I'm not the only one!!!! There is community in Neurodivergence and it only took me 44 years to know anything about it!!
48 + 2 = 50
50 + 27 = 77
77 - 2 = 75
Sometimes I’ll do it your way, though if something is close to an easy round number, I’ll temporarily add or subtract the difference, do the math, then remove that change (as above).
I dunno. According to Dr Google, people with ADHD have trouble with mental math, but I'm wondering if that's maybe more because of the way it was taught. When I was in school back in the dark ages, I was kinda indifferent towards math cause it just seemed so easy to me, but I never used the same logic as my classmates. Now that my kid is in school, however, I'm seeing the new way it's being taught and it's more about manipulating the numbers (exactly like I did) to understand their relationship instead of just remembering that 7+8 is always gonna be 15. My sample size is very small of course, but he and I can both do mental math really quickly and we end up using the same methods (that I did NOT teach him lol)
\^\^ SO. MUCH. THIS. as a fellow dopamine deficient i fully relate to the "new math" that everyone around me seems to hate so much. seems like we were doing association and logic before it was cool lol
Same here. I have a child in elementary school and noticed how they are teaching math compared to how it was taught to me over 20 years ago. I am able to understand the new methods easily as they are close to how I did math in my head and apparently other parents are having a hard time.
I agree with this. I don't have kids, but when there was all that outrage about "Common Core Math", or whatever it was called, it made so much more sense to me because it's how I think about it. I am really good with numbers, and I honestly think it's because I do math so differently and it works in my head.
I ALWAYS hated math for one reason "show your work"
Like I get you need to know I'm not cheating. but I really have to show my work to show you I can add 2 and 5 together...? I did so much of the calculations in my head. Actually got to a point in freshman high school where my teacher asked the class what "xx times xxx" was. Everybody started getting their calculators out and I beat all of them by doing it in my head.
afaik it has to do with working memory, which tends to be poor in ADHD people. So every task that needs you to memorize something to process it with something different you're also memorizing can be hard for us.
But please correct me if i'm wrong, I'm just vaguely recalling
I always “struggled” in school because I could do it in my head fast and easy but couldn’t explain it or put the steps on paper. They always thought I was cheating and there was “no way” I was doing it in my head.
The other day I looked and said out loud my truck has 3,595 hours of engine operation. My SO went to the calculator to find our how many days that was. I immediately said “it’s about 150 days” (it’s 149.8).
I’ve always been able to do this. Often I’ll round or get close when precision doesn’t matter (like being off by 0.2 days out of 150).
I'm not that good with math but i did get accused of cheating in an ap psych class because i tied for the highest score on an exam and i didn't take notes. psych was always a special interest of mine lol
i am better at basic arithmetic than my coworkers though so I'm happy with that much
I love math. I’ve been programming since I was 5 and that was basically knowing the answer I want and finding the math problem to get to that result.
It helps when it’s something you genuinely enjoy versus something you’re forced to do.
HAHAHA I deal blackjack for my job rn and I am one of the dudes adding 8 + 7 because it’s just pattern recognition to me. 8 + 7 means it has to end in a 5. Carry the 1….
Lol, y’all’s way makes my brain hurt _so much_. I have to do it by ones and tens, straightforward, because I just don’t have the focus to do it any other way.
Not sure if this is part of it, but numbers had gender for me as a kid 😂 so 7(f) would marry 8(m) and they’d have a kid (15, also m). I know it’s absolutely insane, and I grew out of it; but I can—for the most part—still remember which number had which gender.
This is how I start it. Then my dyslexic brain gets jumbled so I’ll use a calculator or write it on paper.
I’m a visual mather, no mental mathing happing here.
I do 48+20 first, then think to myself "what number would give me 7 If I added 5 to that number?", quickly realize it's 2, do 68+2 and then 70+5.
Everything's easier when the numbers end with 5 or 0.
My brain just immediately goes “can’t do it” I’m the worst at math so whenever I see a math problem that takes more than 3 brain cells to do then my brain automatically goes “Nope!”
Phew, i know there’s plenty of other comments with the same sentiment, but being unique about fuckin math wasn’t how I wanted to start my day. Thank you for giving me peace lmao.
I literally gave up and came to the comments 😂.
EDIT: HAHHA I didn’t even notice the answer was in the title. Obviously my meds have worn off for the day goodnightttttt 😩😂
20+40=60 7+3=10 then how much of the 8 was left? O yeah 5, so 65 right? Oh no I did a thing with 7 and part of 8 guess I’ll grab my phone to calculate oh look notifications
7+8=15 - carry the 1
1+2+4 = 7
75
Showing my age with my "old math" here I suppose LOL
My BF (also ADHD owning) had this processs:
20+40 = 60
7+8=15
60+15 = 75
(7x2=14+1=15) + (20+40=60) =75 Except I probably have to redo one of the bracket calculations or like hold up some fingers or something because but the time I’ve done the second math I forgot the answer to the first.
I do 7+8 is 5 (i know its 15 but whatever the answer is will be just be a tens place higher)
20 + 40 + 5 = 65 then up the tens place once to 75.
Keeping it all in my head, its easier for me to separate that 10 from the 5 this way to use it later.
(48+7) + 20
I find 8 + 7 easier than 7 + 8. Cannot explain it.
When I worked as a teaching assistant I supported loads of kids who did maths in 'the wrong way'. It really frustrated me because they could do it, they just did it in a way that made sense to them! I've also worked in curriculum development in a uni and so many of the first year students struggle with the idea that there's no one 'right way' of doing stuff, often there's loads of paths to the solution. They're taught 'the right way' at school and as far as they're aware, that's the only way.
Fun fact: working as a teaching assistant is what lead me to be diagnosed with adhd. They had an adhd coordinator who said 'so you know your adhd...' and I replied 'oh I don't have adhd'. And she laughed 'yeah sure okay'. And told me to see my GP. Diagnosed 4 months later.
2 + 4 = 6, but those other numbers add up to something in the teens, so I know it's going to be seven, take away two from seven to make 8:10, that makes five, so 15 so 75
(20+40)+(7+8) for me
I also do 8+8=16 then 16-1=15. Its fast in my head for some reason
I do it with 7+7=14+1=15 haha
Yeah this is me
Same!
for some reason my brain learned 8+7=15 really well by associating it with cribbage, which i used to play with my dad when i was little. idk why it still works like that but it does lol
I NEVER expected to see someone else relate a 15 to cribbage when I went to read through this thread. That is amazing
i didn't expect anyone else to relate either lol, definitely really cool, those are some fond memories for me
I came here to say this!
Same!
Same
Am I the only cribbage player? (Lots of adding up to 15)
![gif](giphy|ReBGGJtbXrjbQJwByP|downsized)
15,2 15,4 15,6 15,8 15,10 15,12 15,14 15,16 set of four for 12 and the right jack makes 29
Holy shit, I just wrote the same thing for mine before seeing yours. I'm so happy I'm not the only one!!!! There is community in Neurodivergence and it only took me 44 years to know anything about it!!
Mine is pretty much the same but I have to break down the 7+8 so it’s 8+2=10 +5
I do 2+48=50 which leaves 50+25=75
48 + 2 = 50 50 + 27 = 77 77 - 2 = 75 Sometimes I’ll do it your way, though if something is close to an easy round number, I’ll temporarily add or subtract the difference, do the math, then remove that change (as above).
>48 + 2 = 50 > >27 - 2 = 25 > >50 + 25 = 75 For me, I take 27-2 first. Not sure why.
Is mental math an ADHD thing too?

adhd here with the same experience. i never listened to the teachers and just knew the answer using similar self taught systems.
So it's not that I'm just good at math. It's just another symptom..
afaik it has to do with working memory, which tends to be poor in ADHD people. So every task that needs you to memorize something to process it with something different you're also memorizing can be hard for us. But please correct me if i'm wrong, I'm just vaguely recalling

Same
Reverse it but yes
Same here too
Yep, I literally thought “60, then 75”
Same here
That's how I did it, too.
That’s exactly how it works for me. Counting in 10s works best
![gif](giphy|4JVTF9zR9BicshFAb7|downsized)
This is so accurate!
48+7+20
Hard part first, easier part second
Yeah this one
Did the same. But I'm sure it'd be different every day.
This is the one
Borrow 2 from 27 and conveniently put on the 48. Thus 25 and 50.
I went the other way, take 3 from the 48 and add it to the 27, so 30 + 45
[удалено]
thanks was looking for this :D i always add to the next ten and add whatevers left its just so much easier for me
Same
Such is the way
Scrolled way too far for this
I thought I’d never find your comment!
i mean the same method is literally in the title lol
Saaaaame!!!
My people
Duuuudeeeee I’ve been doing it all wrong - makes it so much easier to add when you make one of the numbers cleaner!
Finally the person with the best answer. It’s so clear in my head, it has been driving me insane. Like… what is up with the dude adding up 8 + 7?!
HAHAHA I deal blackjack for my job rn and I am one of the dudes adding 8 + 7 because it’s just pattern recognition to me. 8 + 7 means it has to end in a 5. Carry the 1….

Exactly right.
First the one’s place: 7+8=15. Carry the 1 to the ten’s place. Next the ten’s place: 2+4+1=7. So 7 in the ten’s place, 5 in the one’s place. 75.
That’s how I did it too! Phew not the only one.
This is the only way I know how. No way I’m about to learn some newfangled math at this point.
Thank you!!! Waded through so many rational methods to find the one I actually use.
This is how I start it. Then my dyslexic brain gets jumbled so I’ll use a calculator or write it on paper. I’m a visual mather, no mental mathing happing here.
Phew. I was starting to feel bad.
Haha, so I just realized I didn’t mental-math it! I couldn’t get the answer until I typed it out in my comment😂
Only way I know how to do it and even then sometimes I struggle
This is how I did it too but honestly I struggled with adding 7+8 in my brain😟
I kept getting 13 for some reason, then I counted it out on my fingers XD I swear I'm smart
Same for me!
Same
7 + 8 = 15 20 + 40 = 60 15 + 60 = 75
Same but did the 20+40 first.
Hahaha i do this
That’s what I did!
This
48+20 then I count the 7 on with my fingers ( I have dyscalculia though)
I did this the other way, reading L to R, 27 + 40 and then + 8
I do 48+20 first, then think to myself "what number would give me 7 If I added 5 to that number?", quickly realize it's 2, do 68+2 and then 70+5. Everything's easier when the numbers end with 5 or 0.
48+7 is 55 and add 20 for 75
That's how I do it, it's like the seven slots into the eight like a Tetris block.
*exactly*
Yes!
Finaly found you
I got scared because I had to scroll too far for this. Thank you
My brain just immediately goes “can’t do it” I’m the worst at math so whenever I see a math problem that takes more than 3 brain cells to do then my brain automatically goes “Nope!”
My brain says pull out the calculator app
I like math, and am generally solid with low level math, but my brain still shut down looking at that
If the answer to math isnt in a song lyric I also simply 'Nope!'
I had to scroll too far to find this comment. I went to calculate and my brain was like "No thank you!" and I was like "Ok!" lol.
7+8 makes 5 and carry the 1, 2+4+1 = 7. -> 75
This is the way
Yay, I'm not alone!!
This is what I do but now looking at what other options others are doing, I'm thinking how much more in life am I making more difficult? 😅
Your way always works and is nice and reliable. It works for big numbers small numbers and decimals. It's good for us simple folk :P
48+20+7
Yes! Me too.
48 - 3 = 45, 27 + 3 = 30, 45 + 30 = 75
Same
Posted the same (way) below.. because scrolling through previous responses after posting makes perfect sense right?
Oh thank God, I'm not alone
I just panic
30+50-5
Oh thank god
Felt.
this is the one.
Scrolled too far for this comment! Sigh of relief has left my body.
Update: just did a scroll of the comments too and can’t believe more people aren’t giving this answer??!! Whaaat
O Captain! My Captain!
I thought I was the only one
Oh thank fuck, I thought I was alone in the universe.
How people see any simpler way to do this blows my mind
there are dozens of us!
Phew, i know there’s plenty of other comments with the same sentiment, but being unique about fuckin math wasn’t how I wanted to start my day. Thank you for giving me peace lmao.
i was getting more and more uncomfortable as I scrolled down with how many people are willingly working with 7s and 8s before 5s and 10s 😂😭
Yup, this one
This is the most elegant solution
Corner cutting with just the right amount of elegance - I gotchu
48+20+7
48+30-3
With you on that.
27+8 is 35, then +40 is 75 No wait I think it’s the other way around, 48+7 is 55, then plus 20 is 75
"*hold on let me find my* *calculator, I aint doing that shit"* at least personally
Even if I attempt it, I don't trust myself cause math is hard and calculators are in my phone
“Ewww numbers!”
2+4 = 60 and 8+7 = 15… 60+15 = 75 it all makes sense in my head.
My kin! I was like, does no one else do it like me? ☹️ But here you are! 🙂
Thought I’d never find y’all.
ayyy 🙌
Modified Vertical math is the way 😂😂
7+8= (8+8=16)-1=15 2+4+1=7 70+5=75
"I have to add a 7 to an 8? Hard pass."
25+50
25+50
I do it like OP.
60+15
7+7=14 14+1=15 4+2=6 Carry the 1=7 Put it all together =75 I'm surprised no one else does maths like this haha...
50 + 27 - 2 = 75. The only way my brain has done it since elementary.
7 and 48 make 55 with another 20 make omg lasagna sounds so fucking good for dinner.
27+3=30+45=75
Finally! Someone I can relate to here
Finally I found someone who did the math like me lol
7 + 8 = 7 * 2 + 1 = 14 + 1 = 15 20 + 40 = 60 15 + 60 = 75 mafs
How you do math in your head has nothing to do with ADHD
27+48... 7+8.....= 15 20+....... Yeah I just don't care. Thats what my brain does. Hope this helps!
20+40=60, 5+5=10, 3+2=5, 75
I did it as 45+30=75 lol
27 + 8 = 35 + 40 = 75.
Thought I was the only one
30+50=80-3=77-2=75
20 + 48 = 68, then add the 7 and we got 75
I just fucking get it wrong.
I literally gave up and came to the comments 😂. EDIT: HAHHA I didn’t even notice the answer was in the title. Obviously my meds have worn off for the day goodnightttttt 😩😂
I get my calculator out. That’s a no from me dog. Or I take 2 from 27 to make 48 into 50. 25 + 50 = 75
(20 + 40) + 8 + 2 +5
20+40=60 7+3=10 then how much of the 8 was left? O yeah 5, so 65 right? Oh no I did a thing with 7 and part of 8 guess I’ll grab my phone to calculate oh look notifications
27+3 = 30. 30+45 =75
for me it's 2+4 = 6 (7+7)+1 = 15 so natually then it's (6+1)x10 for 70 and add the 5 to make 75 I mean, who DOESN"T do it that way???
7+8=15 - carry the 1 1+2+4 = 7 75 Showing my age with my "old math" here I suppose LOL My BF (also ADHD owning) had this processs: 20+40 = 60 7+8=15 60+15 = 75
my brain temporarily stops working and then i remember that 7+8=15 and 20+40=60 so 60+15=75
I round them both up to be 50 + 30 and then subtract the parts I rounded = 75
Nothing, my brain refuses to do any math. It has to be done externally - finger counting, writing it all out, but preferably with a calculator.
I just kinda knew the answer, the only two instant and almost unnoticeable thoughts I has were 7+8 is 15 and 65 is too low so it has to be 75...
(7x2=14+1=15) + (20+40=60) =75 Except I probably have to redo one of the bracket calculations or like hold up some fingers or something because but the time I’ve done the second math I forgot the answer to the first.
Just move 2 from one side to the other and you're done
break it to 5's or 10's add the leftovers.
When I SEE it, I think 20+40=60, 7+8=15, 60+15= 75. When I HEAR it, I think 27+40=67, 67+8=75
I do 7+8 is 5 (i know its 15 but whatever the answer is will be just be a tens place higher) 20 + 40 + 5 = 65 then up the tens place once to 75. Keeping it all in my head, its easier for me to separate that 10 from the 5 this way to use it later.
7+7 is 14 + 1 is 15 2 + 4 is 6 60 + 15 is 75
7+8=15 move the one to the tens addition problem 2+4+1=7 70+5=75
6…. 15…… 75 That’s what I’m thinking
27 + 48 = 48 + 20 = 68 + 7 = 75
I give 3 from 48 to 27 and make it 30 so the final eq is 30 + 45 I think it makes it easier
20+40=60 7+8=15 60+15=75
i start with 2+4 = 6 then 7+8= 1? then 1? + 6 =??
(27+3 = 30 + 45 )= 75
If 8+8 is 16 then 7+8 is 15 .. drop down the 5 bring up the one add 2+4+1 is 7 so then we have the grand total of 75
I’m 60 + 15 gang
(20+40)+(8+7)=60+10+5=75
7+8 = 15; 20+ 40 = 60 -> 75
20+60 = 60 and 7+8 is one less than 7+7 which is 14. So 75
20+40 = 60; 7+8 = 15; 60+15 = 75
I do 48+2 = 59+20 = 70+5 = 75
I did 8+8=16-1= 15, then 40+30= 70, then added my 5 for 75.
8+8=16, -1=15, 4+2=6, (6+1=7) =75
7+8=15, 2+4=6, 27+48=75
(48+7) + 20 I find 8 + 7 easier than 7 + 8.
Dyscalculia is a real thing so I use a calculator
2 + 4 = 6, but those other numbers add up to something in the teens, so I know it's going to be seven, take away two from seven to make 8:10, that makes five, so 15 so 75
For me, simple math is okay, but the more complicated stuff is like a foreign language to me.
