If you've got time, I'd suggest ordering a case for them on Amazon. Ours was about $25, and lets us carry it on our back like a backpack. Makes it easier when taking luggage, kids, backpacks, etc.

Check them at the ticket counter. They'll go to your final destination. Have two young kids and do 5-6 trips a year with them. Don't burden yourself with taking them to the gate. Pain in the ass. Upon arrival at baggage claim, sometimes they come out on the carousel, sometimes they're in the oversized luggage area. No rhyme or reason, so you need to hunt for them a bit if you didn't see them right away. Enjoy!

Thanks, dragging them through the airport was definitely not sounding fun!

Rancidsirloin

It is not. Check them at the ticket counter. It will still be free of charge

You’ll want a bag or something as opposed to them just being tossed around as is. Even putting them in a garbage bag is better than nothing

Comfortable_Boot5276

Buy the cheap ones and check it in. I wouldn’t take the chance of them damaging your daily use ones. Baggage handlers toss bags.

Lawbradoodle

Highly recommend packing them in luggage, and then yes you check them at the counter and tell them it’s a car seat and you won’t be charged for it. It’s just like a free extra bag.

PrimaryThis9900

They’re pretty bulky, so I don’t think there’s anyway I could get them to fit in a suitcase, but I did get a couple of nylon bags to put them in just to keep them clean. Thanks for your reply!

Lawbradoodle

Yeah, we used those big carseat bags for a while, then switched to a duffel, and now thank goodness our boosters fit into a carryon-size roller bag.

Crew here: Check them at the gate, not the check in counter. If you don't have a connection, the ground staff witll bring them right up to the door of the plane at your destination. If you check them with a connection, theyll go to your final. But either way just do it at the gate and its free.

Rancidsirloin

No matter where you check a car seat it will be free. If you check it at the ticket counter it will go to your final destination and be at the carousel with the rest of your luggage. If you gate check it, the crew will return it to you on the jet bridge just as you get off the plane. The only problem is then you have to carry the seat and other carryon items along with your kiddos. Carry them all to the baggage carousel and pick up your other checked items.

I just saw that those were a thing this morning! Unfortunately, we are flying out at 6 am tomorrow, so no time to order anything!

We always bought car seat/stroller combos. We would use the combo to get through the airport (and carry other bags!), check them both at the gate, and pick them up at the gate, allowing one of us to take the kid, his bags, his car seat, and his stroller all at once. Be aware that checking as luggage can result in damaged and can result in it getting lost (just like any other luggage). If you check it gate side (and pick it up the same way), it won’t get lost.
