In a statement on Sunday afternoon, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community remembered Mr Tahir as “a cherished member of our community and a dedicated security guard who tragically lost his life while serving the public during this attack”.

To think this poor bloke died for a security guards level 2 hourly rate of $25.99/hr if he was paid the award, some operators don't even pay that much. Minimum wage in Australia is $23.23/hr.
It's absolutely terrible when you consider that wage.... Something to look at is, all the big well experienced security guards work the night shifts at bars/clubs for much higher wages. These rates should be paid to say staff doing the same job... I don't know Mr. Tahir but we met many members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community after my child made a good friend in preschool; the parents invited us to some of their church dinners and the whole community were lovely, kind and welcoming. It's sad to think Faraz died trying to help others in the face of horrible circumstances, but I'll think of him as someone who fought to protect others. RIP Faraz.

Pretty sure most security guards are not licensed or employed to put a hand on anyone, my understanding is the ones we see most often are actually taught not to touch people but to deescalate through communication or simply follow/observe/report to police. The idea that some people expected anyone with no way to defend themselves and no real tactical training to suddenly take down an armed person is laughable.
Mental health hospitals as well and unless urgent it's a team effort/clinically lead by nurses. That's my job, myself and the other guards would go hands on at least three times a month.

Security used to be security 10+ years ago. In retail at least, it’s slowly evolved into an industry full of immigrants being paid f all as the security firms pay cash in hand to undercut each other for contracts.
Any muscle, strength or experience in subduing an offender is rare. If you think a ‘security guard’ is there to protect customers or ensure a level of safety, you are mistaken. They’re there to deter theft and even then they mostly will do very little with an aggressive offender.
I mean if you were new to this country, probably being paid sub $20 an hour, would you take on an armed offender? Looks like this brave guy did though.

Honestly mate I couldn't give you an accurate recollection. But the long and short of it was when you were in a company security uniform you could do LESS than Joe blogs. It was more about not getting sued and avoiding police involvement. But like I said I bailed out.
Way more than 10 years ago. I worked hospo jobs in the early 2000's with security guards and they weren't allowed to touch anyone way back then either.

So I'm a security guard, I can confidently say that almost any action I took in this situation would have been justified. Use a chair to break his arms, justified. But I also can't say I would actually be able to do it. I know what I can do legally, I don't know if could do it though.
That being said, security doesn't have an obligation (well not at this level) to put their lives on the line.
I didn't have to ask where security was, I already knew, they were doing their jobs, and now I know that some went above and beyond.
Mall aka Centre security are actually directed not to go towards them and actually get people out of the building. Some do go towards and unfortunately this happens.

I've worked in the security industry for years and these jobs have a strict do not put yourself in danger or put your hands on anybody rule. His SOP's would have told him to hide and radio the control room or ring 000, he also wouldn't be earning anymore than $27 an hour.
I'd be a shame if people just expected this kind of response because he was a security guard "doing his job", if he did his job he would of found a place to hide. Again, he died because he was a decent human being trying to help people.
That is so bloody unlucky. I know someone who works at a Westfield in a pretty dodge location and he has told some stories, but this is just so unlucky. So tough for his family as well considering he only recently moved to Australia.

This incident is obviously an extreme worst case but similar types of incidents (mentally ill/drug affected person behaving aggressively or individual brandishing a knife) are daily occurrences where I work. For the most part security guard job is inherently dangerous, they don’t have much to defend themselves with, their role is mostly to observe and call the Police if things get too much.
I did security guard jobs in Victoria, all we had in terms of legislative power was 458 crimes act, which is basically citizens arrest but no means to enforce it with no equipment other than your bare hands and hope that other person or people are not armed.
It’s mostly resented by employers to have security guards go hands on anyway, so you’d just get told to call Police and follow them from distance.
As a result most security guards have zero or little training about self defense etc.
I wouldn’t go back to doing that job.

100%. At my workplaces that have had security, they always worked more as mediators between management and aggressive or angry customers, and at deescalating situations. Once it escalates into a physical fight, threats, or an attack it becomes an issue of calling police and having them assist instead. This bloke went above and beyond. Nothing but respect for him.

It's always done in slow motion with a cooperative partner. You can watch elite level grapplers try to defend an attack from a training knife, they get tagged so many times. If you can't disarm someone by the time they get into their reach, it's going to end badly. Anyone who confronted the attacker went above and beyond.
Security used to be security 10+ years ago. In retail at least, it’s slowly evolved into an industry full of immigrants being paid f all as the security firms pay cash in hand to undercut each other for contracts. Any muscle, strength or experience in subduing an offender is rare. If you think a ‘security guard’ is there to protect customers or ensure a level of safety, you are mistaken. They’re there to deter theft and even then they mostly will do very little with an aggressive offender. I mean if you were new to this country, probably being paid sub $20 an hour, would you take on an armed offender? Looks like this brave guy did though. Just an absolute tragedy he came to Australia for a better life, and ended up not even being safe at work. May he rest in peace.

Honestly mate I couldn't give you an accurate recollection. But the long and short of it was when you were in a company security uniform you could do LESS than Joe blogs. It was more about not getting sued and avoiding police involvement. But like I said I bailed out.

Some of those accounts had a lot of followers, but didn’t delete the tweet. Many people telling them to remove it, but these types are never wrong, even when they clearly are. Even channel 7 named the Jewish man FFS.
So I'm a security guard, I can confidently say that almost any action I took in this situation would have been justified. Use a chair to break his arms, justified. But I also can't say I would actually be able to do it. I know what I can do legally, I don't know if could do it though. That being said, security doesn't have an obligation (well not at this level) to put their lives on the line. I didn't have to ask where security was, I already knew, they were doing their jobs, and now I know that some went above and beyond.
Mall aka Centre security are actually directed not to go towards them and actually get people out of the building. Some do go towards and unfortunately this happens.
He didn't die because he was doing his job, he died because he was a decent human being trying to help others. I've worked in the security industry for years and these jobs have a strict do not put yourself in danger or put your hands on anybody rule. His SOP's would have told him to hide and radio the control room or ring 000, he also wouldn't be earning anymore than $27 an hour. I'd be a shame if people just expected this kind of response because he was a security guard "doing his job", if he did his job he would of found a place to hide. Again, he died because he was a decent human being trying to help people.

Tbh the manager of our team is already pushing for us to have tactical vests to wear on shift. This incident is obviously an extreme worst case but similar types of incidents (mentally ill/drug affected person behaving aggressively or individual brandishing a knife) are daily occurrences where I work. We joke but it’s security guards, retail staff, cleaning personnel and the like often bearing the brunt of gaps in mental health care or lax penalties for crime.

What an important question, should be much higher. Whenever I want to donate as a tribute to someone but they don’t have a gofundme or similar, I think about what they might have wanted or needed in life. For Tarez Tahir I reckon I’d donate to a refugee or migrant resettlement program. There’s one in my area that offers free swimming lessons and gym memberships. Is there a local library that does English lessons for new migrants? I don’t give to religious charities, but if you do you might look into the Muslim youth group he volunteered at. You get my idea. Also, as I typed this out I decided to donate to the swimming lesson program.

Security guards in Australia are not armed, unless they are specialized security guards transporting money etc. For the most part security guard job is inherently dangerous, they don’t have much to defend themselves with, their role is mostly to observe and call the Police if things get too much. I did security guard jobs in Victoria, all we had in terms of legislative power was 458 crimes act, which is basically citizens arrest but no means to enforce it with no equipment other than your bare hands and hope that other person or people are not armed. It’s mostly resented by employers to have security guards go hands on anyway, so you’d just get told to call Police and follow them from distance. As a result most security guards have zero or little training about self defense etc. I wouldn’t go back to doing that job. As migrant who also worked as security to build up my resume in Australia, I feel sorry for this guy but I will acknowledge his courage, he ended up dying for people he didn’t get to know.
Not sure if it's different now, but my dad was a guard through the 80's and 90's. He had a gun when he was a bank guard, but not when he was a construction site guard. Of course the latter was the job where he had multiple hostile incidents, never the first one. Maglite came in handy. Once forced an intruder into a portaloo and locked him in there until the cops arrived.

The only thing you can do is run unless you have a firearm. It only takes a few seconds for someone armed with a knife to stab you & during the altercation with all their adrenaline rushing a lot of people don't even notice they've been stabbed & most of them die from their injuries later.
The whole incident is shockingly tragic. This man needs to be nationally recognised. To give everything to be here, and then to give everything quite literally, to defend the innocent.
