What’s funny is that I’ve always met very social cats. The fact is that their idea of “social interaction” often is “let’s be in the same room and ignore each other”. But if I leave the room, the cat follows!
My female tries to get my to groom her head all the time. Best I can do is rub my stubbled chin all over her head. She loves it though, so it must be enough.
I have an obnoxiously friendly cat and its hilarious because she also acts autistic and doesn’t understand social conventions. I take her on leashed walks, when we see a stranger, She will POOF up her tail like she is scared, and then run right up to the person and stand on her hind legs, meowing and demanding they lean down to pat her head. They often get scared and flinch away, thinking she is gonna attack them, even when I explain “she is SUPER friendly and has never attacked anyone” 🤣 she will walk up and rub on people without even waiting for them to offer a hand to sniff or say hi.
My cat only likes to be touched and cuddled on her own terms. If you pick her up for cuddles, she hisses and slaps you with her claws out. And she's really picky on the type of food she'll eat. I always attributed this to her tortitude lol
Mine is a sassy tart of a princess lol. Before my sister moved, she was spoilt rotten by both my sister and I because we could both afford to get all 3 cats treats. But now it's just me and my tortie, money is a bit tight, so she only gets treats once in a blue moon.
My tortie is the same! She likes to sit on me for strokes and then jumps off and goes to sit on her own on the other side of the room. I feel that so much.
I feel so conflicted about this, but I’d reluctantly agree with you. Personally, I *HATE* cats. I’m a dog person, I like to be cuddly and affectionate with the animals. Cats hate it when I do it, and the dogs absolutely love it. Sometimes I feel like I’m more NT than ND due to that distinction, I gaslight myself over it sometimes 😂
Alas, you speak the truth.
you probably just never met a cuddly cat before. my cats love cuddling (except my youngest cat)
i find it interesting that you're into dogs though because even though i like dogs, i hate barking, it's one of the most jarring sounds ever.
I’m a really weird autist, I should think.
Dogs love me, even when I’m a complete stranger. They waltz right up to me looking for pets. This “magic” works on a few other animals, but mainly dogs.
I’ve met around a dozen cats and they all avoid me like the plague. They hiss at me and try to stay far away.
I believe this dichotomy is connected somehow. Perhaps it’s my scent or maybe my posture, voice, or a combination of factors 🤷♂️
The way to socialise with cats is very different from dogs, you have to let them come to you, sniff you, “approve” by e.g. rubbing against you before petting is OK. They have very distinct boundaries and sense of personal space and bodily autonomy. Meanwhile I’ve never met a dog who understood the definition of personal space lol.
That’s why I like dogs. Jumping through all those hoops for a cat (and the majority of the time I’m still rejected) is fucking stupid.
We’re all animals here and we all need love. Dogs understand that better than any other.
Edit: I should’ve known better than to express this sentiment in this sub. I know y’all are almost universally pro-cat, which is totally fine, but I failed to predict how militant some of you would be about it.
I can’t say I understand that perspective but I respect it. I like dogs but I find them overwhelming to be around sometimes with how needy and dependent they can be. I need my personal space and quiet, and I appreciate that a cat is happy just staying in the same room as you or sleeping next to your hand while you’re working. In that respect I also understand cats better.
It’ll differ from person to person, and I understand the majority of people here are gonna prefer cats.
My perspective is that I’m socially neglected by humans, so it’s nice to be able to give and receive affection on-demand from a dog. It suits my needs much better than a cat would.
you're comparing liking animals to sexualities bro 💀 so many people have changed their minds on cats and realized they had a wrong idea of them due to stereotypes.
[and there's this book](https://www.amazon.co.uk/All-Cats-Are-Autism-Spectrum/dp/1787754715/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=2C1TBK7SVPZZN&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.LbclrabTNR0G21Z0_S6ATznwGaLIbJ93ubC2MmR9nyjnjOwdQWhTVGw51dCMvqBUCm5HTWMRt-YchMx-5-ExQnx1PbblghXklou2Yg8fhSGUSORsqA1plp-I2W0IXIRl8JNxJaI8E1ZdMdifdeuq-0AcVGvC9Yr0YEj9-LCJ1hYlz9UW9Wq8rg_Qo85k7esIZYfM_wLGQblKWx_jIqq72A.H8QxZLc8mrUELYpbz1s2tn3re2ukZuq0LpBRvGjbr7A&dib_tag=se&keywords=all+cats+are+on+the+autism+spectrum&qid=1714841019&sprefix=all+cats%2Caps%2C134&sr=8-1)
Ferrets.
* Stashing behavior (collecting).
* Can be very fixated on things.
* Social but like, only on their terms.
* Weasel war dance (stimming).
That's just off the top of my head.
Bees with autism. There is a phenomenon of bees that have similar characteristics in terms of social responsiveness. They can't respond to fellow bees. They don't guard their queen like the other bees. They just don't do the bee things. What is so super cool is that they share some of the same genetic markers to our autism genes! Bee autism!
I've seen a YouTube video where a guy was trying to explain his cockatiels behaviour to someone, and he said to basically think of them as autistic, like it would get really stressed in new environments, took a while to warm up to strangers, if they got fascinated by something they got really obsessed with it etc
I have a bearded dragon with a neuro disability that impacts his ability to walk. He’s very different from other bearded dragons. Doesn’t really display typical beardie behavior esp for a male. He’s only puffed his beard once when a bird almost attacked him, he never head bobs, arm waves…like just typical beardie stuff. He dislikes being touched, is extremely picky (very common with beardies but he’s next level; Yes my beardie safe foods), has an obsession with this ONE rock, and easily gets overstimulated. He’s just a very different little guy and I joke all the time about how hes autistic like me. It also takes him awhile to get used to change and this is common for reptiles I believe but just another thing to add to the list lol. Like I built him a new dig box and he’s been angry that I changed his set up for 3 days. I felt bad stressing him out but there was really no way to ease the change. He’s fine though, i woke up today to find him chillin in there and he was calmer.
It’s possums… they’re the only animal that does shutdowns (plays dead) AND meltdowns (just starts screaming) when there’s no much stimuli.
But the rest of the time they’re just cute…
Came here to say this! Hisses and screams and is intimidating but is actually easily scared to faux-death/paralysis. Low body temp, sleeps a lot, nocturnal predisposition. Wears fingerless gloves and leggings with an oversized pocket-fronted fleece.
CATS!!! i love my babies so much. my kitty satsuki doesnt really trust other people, but she trusts me a lot, because im soft and gentle where others arent. i was raised with cats so i am very good with them!! my first word was cat!! they are my favorite animal cats r just so cool
I have a chinese cave gecko who is SUPER shy. His species primarily is only active at night and he tends to hide if anyone can see him (he loves to explore when no one is around which I can see through a night vision camera I have set up). He hates being touched and he WILL bite you if you scare him. He is also very selective with his food and will refuse food for weeks. Right now he's decided he won't eat any insects at all and is being fed a slurry through a syringe into his mouth. Overall I think he has lots of autistic traits and I love him for it.
Haven't seen anyone say horses. I always joke my horse is also autistic. He's very sensitive, doesn't cope with change, will not let himself be caught if the head collar isn't his normal pink one, very fussy eater, and he got hooked on one special movement and now he wants to do it all the time.
I would say bull terriers. I have one. He will have melt downs for example if it rains, they also do something called trancing which resembles sensory seeking behaviour. They will all of a sudden become slow motion under a plant or branch.
The breed has also been part of a study looking into autism in dogs.
It's mostly that their sounds and movements (like popcorning) remind me of stimming, or at least of how I stim. They also don’t like to be touched by default and it usually takes a lot of getting to know each other before they allow it. Would def recommend them as pets though, once they trust you, they are wonderful pets :)
My dog is pretty autistic tbh. When he goes outside he *insists* on taking a toy with him. We have maybe two left in the house and that's only cuz they're not his favourite. It won't be long tho.
He's a picky eater. He'll spit food out a lot even if he likes it. He'll sniff food before trying like he doesn't trust it. He doesn't like mushy textures but loves crunch.
Oh, and he has social anxiety. Loves other dogs but is always wary of them at first. Hates humans with a passion, except the family of course. But it took a while for him to warm up to everyone.
Also, this might be normal but, he doesn't whine. He barks a lot at people and other dogs but he never whines when he wants something. He scratches and stares at you until you figure it out.

i have this dog that gets really stressed out by what seems to be social interactions, whenever you interact with her without showing her food she becomes super hyper and i kid you not goes around punching things
I relate to all the people saying cats, because i seriously think i'm very similar to a cat, and to feel safe and relaxed with others i need to be treated as one should properly treat a cat.
(I also meow to my friends)
Honestly, cats imo. Only they get to choose the where, when, and how for interactions and physical contact, and most people accept them for who they are. I am truly jealous of cats.
Hamsters and cats.
Owned a hamster once, reminded me too much of myself it was uncanny. They hate unfamiliar noises and smells and get overstimulated very easily, they love when their environment is predictable and loves routine. They like being alone and doesn’t get along with other hamsters. Also takes a huge amount of effort and patience to befriend them and bond with them.
Cats are also very selective of those they bond and choose to interact with. They’re also very introverted and has a sense of personal space. I love cats, we seem to get along very well.
Domestic cat. Will seek out affection on my own terms but will attack you if you pet me when/where I don't like it. Convinced I don't need anyone yet highly dependent on my partner/house mate.
Orangutans are pretty intelligent and they like to be solitary a lot of the time. They’re hesitant around unfamiliar things but not hostile or aggressive unless provoked. They’re pretty chill and quiet but they can get pretty loud when they want to. I don’t know, I feel like at least I relate to them.
Most is cats, they do routine, they are picky, don't like certain touches, don't like noises, any lights in their face bothers them unless they want it, their meows are all unique, some will make weird sounds for a few minutes, textures they are picky at, they don't like being tied up, they don't like wearing hats unless they do, most cats will and will not let you pick them up, they try either cuddle or run from you, they don't like being caged, cats definitely are autistic Haha
In our house, we all agree it’s our cat. Hates changes in routine. Doesn’t like to be touched. But after the fifth time he’s run head first into the balcony glass door chasing a bird it goes beyond whether the cat is autistic, to the words “good thing he’s cute because he’s not terribly smart.”
Hands down, guinea pigs. I love guinea pigs with all my heart and part of the reason why is because I can relate to them so heavily including (but not limited to) my experiences with autism. They're social with each other (like how I feel around other autistic people) but are cautious around people and other animals. By default they don't like to be touched and will only be comfortable with it if they know you well. They're sensitive to smells and sounds. They prefer the dark and hiding in their own spaces where they feel safe and when they need to unwind. They prefer to live by strict routines (like, if I'm even a few minutes late to feeding my boys, they go wild lmao.) Aaaand to top it all off, they have their own little happy stims! When guinea pigs are really happy, they do something called popcorning. They hop up into the air like popcorn kernels popping, and sometimes these are accompanied by happy squeaking noises. It's like they get so happy that they can't contain it in their little furry bodies anymore
I highly recommend guinea pigs as pets for autistic people. Mine, and all the ones I've owned before, are an absolute delight <3
gotta disagree with all the cats. autism means we are different, if every cat is autistic that means that autism is the normal and nothing is different, which means their is “nothing wrong” because of that, so technically all cats aren’t autistic because all of them are autistic /j
no fr tho i do genuinely agree with cats, it makes sense, they display a lot of symptoms. especially the orange ones.. i like thinking cats have autism, dogs have adhd, and birds have anxiety disorders
I have a tortie, and I swear her tortitude amplifies a lot of the typical cat behaviours. On top of that, she has huge main character syndrome, and even when she was a kitten, she asserted herself as top cat over my sister's cat, who has a good 18 months on her lol
i relate a lot to cats so i'll have to say, cats. they don't like too much social interaction, enjoy routine, among other things
What’s funny is that I’ve always met very social cats. The fact is that their idea of “social interaction” often is “let’s be in the same room and ignore each other”. But if I leave the room, the cat follows!
It's cause they know you're an honorary cat
Yeah, when they want to, but most times I’m the human servant who’s supposed to feed them and open doors for them lol
My female tries to get my to groom her head all the time. Best I can do is rub my stubbled chin all over her head. She loves it though, so it must be enough.
My orange kitty actually knows how to open doors. He’ll jump at the latch and try to grab it. Doesn’t work with round door knobs but he tries.
omg that's lovely
> The fact is that their idea of “social interaction” often is “let’s be in the same room and ignore each other”. So just like us ;)
I have an obnoxiously friendly cat and its hilarious because she also acts autistic and doesn’t understand social conventions. I take her on leashed walks, when we see a stranger, She will POOF up her tail like she is scared, and then run right up to the person and stand on her hind legs, meowing and demanding they lean down to pat her head. Parallel play
They also have tendencies to get easily overstimulated.
Definitely cats
My cat only likes to be touched and cuddled on her own terms. If you pick her up for cuddles, she hisses and slaps you with her claws out. And she's really picky on the type of food she'll eat. I always attributed this to her tortitude lol
my tortie loves cuddling and won't get mad if i pick her up even if she doesn't want it
Mine is a sassy tart of a princess lol. Before my sister moved, she was spoilt rotten by both my sister and I because we could both afford to get all 3 cats treats. But now it's just me and my tortie, money is a bit tight, so she only gets treats once in a blue moon.

My cats love soft plush and baby skin textures. 😁
Apparently you’ve never met my cat :D he loves sleeping on people’s lap and getting belly rubs. And if you go somewhere he usually follows.
I feel so conflicted about this, but I’d reluctantly agree with you. Personally, I *HATE* cats. I’m a dog person, I like to be cuddly and affectionate with the animals. Some of us have different needs. Your behavior is really inappropriate and mean.
"im a lesbian "oh maybe you just never met the right guy" type of response
you're comparing liking animals to sexualities bro 💀 so many people have changed their minds on cats and realized they had a wrong idea of them due to stereotypes.
uh yea? its weird bc they clearly told u what they think and u still push em. cats are awful, period.
Any cat can become somewhat cuddly if you take the time to learn their language, if you don’t, then they won’t.
My cat is extra cuddly not just "somewhat".
Extra cuddly is the best for sure
Dogs don’t have any weird prerequisites like that. That’s why I like dogs better. It’s plug-n-play with them.
Yeah that’s what people say but I’ve found cats to be pretty easy to handle though, especially now that I’ve taken the time to understand them
No no. Cats can cuddle they are so snuggly.
I came to post “my cat”. My boy is mute and a nervous nelly who only likes strokes on his terms.

My cat *definitely* has pawtism. He's a very textbook case, like myself
My cat is very extroverted adhd and my dog is introverted autistic 😂
Ferrets. * Stashing behavior (collecting). * Can be very fixated on things. * Social but like, only on their terms. * Weasel war dance (stimming). That's just off the top of my head.
And they enjoy fun stimulating things to play with like being dropped in a box of macaroni bc they like the feel
Or being (gently) shoved into said box of macaroni lol.
I love it

Beetism. Very much beetism.
I've seen a YouTube video where a guy was trying to explain his cockatiels behaviour to someone, and he said to basically think of them as autistic, like it would get really stressed in new environments, took a while to warm up to strangers, if they got fascinated by something they got really obsessed with it etc
LMFAO I have an on and off hyperfixation on cockatiels
Humans. The diagnosis rate is sky high and climbing.
Good, those people deserve to be seen.
Congratulations! You gave the most autistic answer to this question. lol
He’s fine though, i woke up today to find him chillin in there and he was calmer.
I can relate to your beardie on a very deep level
I have a cockatiel and tbh, she's pretty autistic. My other one is probably even more so.
IS This a THING ????!!!!
Wears fingerless gloves and leggings with an oversized pocket-fronted fleece.

husky
I have African grey parrots and we relate on a spiritual level. We scream randomly, are super uncomfortable around new people, and love to flap.
Human
CATS!!! i love my babies so much. my kitty satsuki doesnt really trust other people, but she trusts me a lot, because im soft and gentle where others arent. i was raised with cats so i am very good with them!! my first word was cat!! they are my favorite animal cats r just so cool
Dragons
I have a chinese cave gecko who is SUPER shy. His species primarily is only active at night and he tends to hide if anyone can see him (he loves to explore when no one is around which I can see through a night vision camera I have set up). He hates being touched and he WILL bite you if you scare him. He is also very selective with his food and will refuse food for weeks. Right now he's decided he won't eat any insects at all and is being fed a slurry through a syringe into his mouth. Overall I think he has lots of autistic traits and I love him for it.
orange cats
Cats are autistic, orange cats are AuDHD
Garfield
As an owner and foster carer of many, many cats, it’s cats. Cats are the most autistic animal. By a long shot. And I love it.
Me
Me. It’s me, I am it.
My dog
Dogs, like Labradors, German Shepherds, and Huskies
Haven't seen anyone say horses. I always joke my horse is also autistic. He's very sensitive, doesn't cope with change, will not let himself be caught if the head collar isn't his normal pink one, very fussy eater, and he got hooked on one special movement and now he wants to do it all the time.
I would say bull terriers. I have one. He will have melt downs for example if it rains, they also do something called trancing which resembles sensory seeking behaviour. They will all of a sudden become slow motion under a plant or branch. The breed has also been part of a study looking into autism in dogs.
Cats. My cat has exactly the same behaviors as me
The only one that’s capable of being autistic
this right here.
guinea pigs
YES
Can I ask why? I'm thinking of adopting a couple & would like to know what to look out for. Thank you 😊
It's mostly that their sounds and movements (like popcorning) remind me of stimming, or at least of how I stim. They also don’t like to be touched by default and it usually takes a lot of getting to know each other before they allow it. Would def recommend them as pets though, once they trust you, they are wonderful pets :)
I had to look up what popcorning was 🤭 It's so adorable to watch & it's inspired me even further. Thanks very much.
Frog/Toad. Screams when touched. Probably has gills, not a biologist.
Cat. I have a cat and he is so much like me.
My mom's dog ☠️
Cats
domestic cats
I once read a book called "All Cats Are Autistic" or something similar, and I loved it
Octopi. They collect treasure, us envasive maneuvers to get away from anything, curious as can be. My personal opinions, of course 🐙
Orange cat

Cats - autism. Dogs - adhd. I shall not explain further. It just makes sense in my head (I am autistic and my partner and sister have adhd.)

I think cats probably are
I hate these questions.
Pandas
German Shepherds, I read articles that said many seem to have autistic traits and I once had one that behaved like this
Cat!
Humans because they’re the only animal that actually can have autism
I’m pretty sure its cats
Sugar Gliders, won't elaborate.
Humans
Cats for sure 😭
Cats !

I've heard that all cats are autistic. They definitely have all the traits

I haven't read it myself yet, but there's a book Cats On the Spectrum about how all cats are autistic ^_^

Bigfoot. He just wants to be left alone because the people are too loud.

Congo African grey parrot

Most is cats, they do routine, they are picky, don't like certain touches, don't like noises, any lights in their face bothers them unless they want it, their meows are all unique, some will make weird sounds for a few minutes, textures they are picky at, they don't like being tied up, they don't like wearing hats unless they do, most cats will and will not let you pick them up, they try either cuddle or run from you, they don't like being caged, cats definitely are autistic Haha
My pet chihu-eenie.
Parrots
Hands down, House cats.
Cats
In our house, we all agree it’s our cat. Hates changes in routine. Doesn’t like to be touched. But after the fifth time he’s run head first into the balcony glass door chasing a bird it goes beyond whether the cat is autistic, to the words “good thing he’s cute because he’s not terribly smart.”
Cats
Probably humans, ngl
It's like they get so happy that they can't contain it in their little furry bodies anymore I highly recommend guinea pigs as pets for autistic people. Mine, and all the ones I've owned before, are an absolute delight <3
Cows
Autistics for sure. They might look like humans but they ain't!

The ones I mean in particular are the totally-not-faked species Autisticus autisticus.
My cats treat me/view me like a cat sometimes... so I guess them
Cats. I have been told that I have cat-like tendencies.
gotta disagree with all the cats. autism means we are different, if every cat is autistic that means that autism is the normal and nothing is different, which means their is “nothing wrong” because of that, so technically all cats aren’t autistic because all of them are autistic /j no fr tho i do genuinely agree with cats, it makes sense, they display a lot of symptoms. especially the orange ones.. i like thinking cats have autism, dogs have adhd, and birds have anxiety disorders
I have a tortie, and I swear her tortitude amplifies a lot of the typical cat behaviours. On top of that, she has huge main character syndrome, and even when she was a kitten, she asserted herself as top cat over my sister's cat, who has a good 18 months on her lol
