Hate to be that person, but: Linux good, its at least worth to try

AddictedtoBoom

Yep. Already converted. The only thing holding me back from abandoning Windows completely was games and all the ones I play work fine on steam/proton.

Sea-Form1919

Same, it was difficult for me at first as I had been spending a lot of time playing games. Since my conversion to Linux I started playing much less because sometimes I just couldn't be bothered to set them up, or some games just didn't work (basically only multiplayer). I barely play anymore and I have to admit I'm happier that way.

lemoraij

I was about to suggest the same thing. Though, depending on which Windows features/application they rely on, it may be a bit more tricky. And a general note: I love how open source software/OSes are linked with sustainability efforts. Hardware does not need to be discarded just because vendors enforce the usage of new software versions that don't support it anymore; switch to Linux!

RedditMcBurger

If it actually had support for programs I would. I can't play my favourite games with Linux.

merRedditor

Debian has become very user-friendly.

rebbytysel

Linux has the same issue. If you don't keep upgrading you end up not being able to use a lot of things.

Driposaurus_294

Uh not really?

neppo95

Didn’t expect a pot about this here but I’m glad I found it. I’m in the same boat. Windows 10 is great. Windows 11 is garbage. Even microsoft devs have said the same (in slightly other words as you’d expect). Half of the apps barely work, the UI isn’t productive at all but hey great, there’s lots of padding everywhere that is completely useless. Some marketing dude must have been at the head of design because the whole OS is designed around a modern UI, yet the modern UI isn’t suitable for OS’. As soon as Windows 10 goes EOL, I’m permanently switching to Linux, specifically PopOS. The only reason I didn’t before because was of gaming supported but recently a new feature came out on steam allowing you to pretty much play anything natively, even without support from the game. Unless microsoft decides to switch directions, I only see a decline happening in user counts since they lost a lot of support from the community.

merRedditor

Windows peaked at XP.

Nidcron

Service pack 2

busterdude123231

I'm sticking to windows 10 since I really just can't take Microsoft's bullshit at this point and Microsoft expects everyone to just have funds to buy their inferior products that don't even work and old shit (such as my wheel) and my old dell latitude e6440 isn't Even upgradable to windows 11. Microsoft must make windows 12 compatible with most, all windows PCs of they want to keep their reputation

neppo95

Well, I must admit they kinda have a point. Most modern PC’s do support Win11 and the ones that don’t will probably not be very productive in a few years time anyway. It’s also a security thing mainly. Windows is notoriously a security liability compared to MacOS and Linux, but win11 fixes a lot of those vulnerabilities. But that is pretty much the only positive change. I agree with your standpoint tho. I look at it from a different perspective since I’m a software engineer and use PC’s for all kinds of different stuff, and mainly the dev part has always been better on Linux, but I’m also a gamer. Now that has been fixed, I can finally switch over. From 6GB memory usage from OS to 1.5😂

AikoHeiwa

Microsoft is not in any danger of going under because of them ending support for an operating system that will be 10 years old next year. They cannot keep an operating system alive just because 'some people like it' or 'don't want to upgrade', they have to move on (even if they're moving on to becoming garbage but tbh I just hate Windows and wish I didn't have to use it and wish I could just full-time switch to Linux instead of dual-booting but what can you do? There's unfortunately some programs I use that don't work on Linux lol)

Aiku1337

Seriously. I love these armchair takes. Microsoft going under because they EoL an older OS? Tell me you don’t understand a multibillion dollar business without telling me…

Fiyachan

This is not a new thing. This has been happening since the 90s If Windows Vista didn’t make the company go under, Windows 11 certainly isn’t. The change from XP to Vista was extremely contentious. Windows 11 is not nearly as bad or extreme as that change was Also please keep in mind that end of support does not mean forced upgrade. Windows XP computers still exist and work. It just means they won’t be offering support to improve on the system. For example, if a program doesn’t work on Windows 10 then your option is to move to Windows 11 or find an alternative program Edit: this works both ways. If a program works on Windows 10 but not Windows 11 then you’ll have to stay with Windows 10 or find an alternative program. So if your issue is upgrading limits your use of programs, then you’re actually better off staying with Windows 10 and no one’s going to force you or even encourage you to upgrade (unless your program updates to only be compatible with Windows 11) This support only applies to FUTURE releases

Weapon_X23

Vista was pretty bad. My first laptop came with it and I constantly was having to reinstall my audio driver. It did teach me important lessons on troubleshooting computers though. My mom said the worst was Windows ME, but I didn't have too much experience with it since my mom went back to 98 then switched to XP when it came out not long after.

animelivesmatter

If you wanna use the internet on your computer, it might as well be a forced upgrade the moment they stop releasing security updates. Of course, that's the nature of software in general, but on Windows it means you are stuck with whatever MS gives you.

busterdude123231

The reason as to why vista didn't break Microsoft is because windows 7 saved the company. Without it Microsoft probably wouldn't have been dead. But this time without Microsoft developing windows 12 and meets old hardware requirements I personally think they might falter. Mainly because most people just simply don't have money to buy a new PC especially with the US economy going like do do garbage.I think Microsoft should reconsider their options before it's too late

Fiyachan

All I can say now is that your information is super incomplete and that Microsoft is in no danger of going under because of a possible OS failure considering they’re far more than an OS company I recommend looking into it all much more. You’ll find that the minimum specs required for Windows 11 is very affordable, that Windows 12 is nothing to worry about for the next 10 years and that Windows 11 is and has been a successful and is even quoted as being their most successful system in years I think they’ll be fine

busterdude123231

maybe my question wasn't clear is anyone WORRIED about microsoft's end of support for windows 10?

Scared_Astronaut9377

Microsoft is going out of business because people who don't have money for new computers will... What? Not buy their next os for their new computers? No one is going to force remove win 10 from your computer, relax.

TimelyPassion5133

They have to focus on the future it happens for all the OS when Windows 10 was the main and current. As for me, immediately windows 11 was released as beta, I immediately got it installed😆 Been using it ever since, there are rumors of windows 12 coming soon and when windows 11 gets old enough it's also going to get an end of support. End of support doesn't mean you can't use it, just means there won't be any fix for any issue you run into that they didn't fix prior. Plus officially, windows 11 is called windows 10H(something something, can't remember the rest)

Siukslinis_acc

>End of support doesn't mean you can't use it, just means there won't be any fix for any issue you run into that they didn't fix prior. Yep. There are computers in my work that are still using xp... Though the problem might arise when new stuff is released (like video games) and it does not support windows 10.

TimelyPassion5133

I doubt that will happen anytime soon, windows is great at backward compatibility

Siukslinis_acc

There is software my dad has to use that doesn't work on windows 10 and he has to use a virtual machine to simulate windows xp for the programm to work. Not to mention old games from the 90's - 2000's

TimelyPassion5133

Really, the amount of old games I play are crazy, also windows really does have a backward compatibility, when you want to open an old game, don't open it the normal way, right click find the properties, there's a setting that allows you to open it in the windows version it was made for. And most times that fixes the issues I have with my old apps or games not working.

CalligrapherFast5053

You don't have to buy a whole new PC just to have a Windows 11 system. Windows 11 can be easily installed on your current PC via USB drive, even if Microsoft tells you that your PC isn't supported. There are lots of guides out there for that kind of thing. Also, try Linux (Pop!_OS, Linux Mint, and Ubuntu).

ElectronicsWizardry

I will also mention there are registry changes you can make so you can do a in place upgrade from 10 to 11 without meeting the system requirements. I’ve done this for a good amount of systems without issue.

busterdude123231

One reason why I am still on this os is because of compatibility, my wheel software is old because I don't have money for a new wheel since i have an old wheel and it just isn't worth it to me.

Comunisto

End of support doesnt mean that your pc will suddently die. The main problem is the end of security updates, but the rest of your SO will just keep going normally, just like any pc running windows 8, 7 or even a Server version that is no longer supported. Nice to see so many people recommending Linux. I hope someday free sotfware digest Microsoft in deep painfull acid. 😃

Lazy-Elderberry-209

As others have said, either consider switching over to Linux or use something like Rufus to install Windows 11 on your machine. Linux has become a lot more approachable for Windows converts over the years. You can make it look like Windows 10 to help it feel more familiar and reduce the stress of learning something new.

Necessary-Group-5272

i saw a couple of posts suggesting linux, if you decide to go this route if you can’t stick with windows 10, i would recommend going with linux mint, it mimics the windows 10 desktop really well and is a user friendly distribution, u can use microsoft apps in the browser as well (word, excel) if you don’t like the open source versions on the system

Weapon_X23

Nope, I moved on to Windows 11 already for the improved HDR and better multimonitor support. I kept my Plex and comic book server on Windows 10 since it was stable, but Windows 11 installed itself one day and I just went with it. I haven't had any problems with Windows 11. I did have an issue recently with the new Nvidia app disconnecting my second monitor and reconnecting, but that was easily fixed by going back to the old Nvidia Experience until they fix the new app.

John_Smith_71

My laptop and desktop are both capable of being upgraded. My concern is, what stops working when I do so, that Im expected to buy again or now have a subscription to Steam in order to be able to run it?

Vitogodfather

I miss windows 2000 and for years through windows 7, would change the bottom bar to the old style. I've given up on my new computer and started fresh. I still miss windows xp, it was great!

SkyeeORiley

I'm my dad's on call IT support, and I paid extra for him to have win10 when win11 was free when I bought him a laptop. He is kind of old and a little slow with tech, so I thought win10 would be the easiest for him. A while later my older brother installs win11 on it like a dumbass and my dad didn't really check the pc before it was too late to roll back. I've had to get used to win11 myself to be able to help him and so far it hasn't caused anything but frustration for me, and especially for my dad. Everything IT support related that I'd do for dad now is mainly just frustrating. Things that were one click away on win10 is now 2-5 clicks away instead, or unavailable unless I open command prompt which really shouldn't be necessary and it also confuses my dad when I open it. The only lucky thing about it all is that dad is mostly used to it now, and so am I. Things take a few minutes longer to do than necessary but it's okay. So with the forced switch I may survive lol.

Inevitable_Wolf5866

My laptop is 7 years old; had some issues last year which I got fixed because I didn’t want to get a new one. And now you’re saying I won’t have a choice? O.o Ernest isn’t going anywhere! Yes, my computer has a name.

space_nerd_82

You could pay for extended security however that is an expensive option https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/3/24120093/microsoft-windows-10-extended-security-updates-price# There is tiny11 which is a lean version of windows 11 which is designed to run on minimal hardware. Or there is continue running windows 10 without security patches which is not a good idea. Microsoft doesn’t care what the consumer thinks or the IT professional thinks examples of this are retiring technet and other examples. However it probably better to switch to something stable that gets security updates.

tompadget69

Never heard somebody that passionate about Windows Operating System before

kerfy404

Windows 10 can't go, I am NOT risking the loss of our lord and savior MS paint

MettatonNeo1

Ms paint is still a thing on windows 11 from what I've heard

kerfy404

I know paint 3D is but i’m talking about the messy bitmap style from MS paint

MettatonNeo1

I see

MettatonNeo1

Planning on moving to Linux mint. However I am not sure if the government sites I use will load. And I don't know if I have enough storage

Dr_Vesuvius

When Windows 10 came out Microsoft offered everyone free upgrades and lots of people didn’t accept them. This will be the same. If Microsoft ever goes bankrupt it won’t be because people can’t afford computers any more.

DaSaw

End of the company? Guess what companies need to keep afloat: money. Guess what the people still using Windows 10 purely for hardware reasons don't have.

quickhakker

Not really,it's something that happens in tech all the time and I'm already in 11 anyway, little tip for people if you don't have 8gb quad code just throw Linux on it

animelivesmatter

This is part of why I've been on Linux. Very few rug-pulls happening over here, and even then you get to choose how much you want stuff to change by choosing your distro. And your device doesn't get locked out of updates based on age like how macOS does or how Windows has started doing. I've been able to keep the same setup going since I switched, every now and then I check what's been going on with Windows 11 and every time I do there's been a change that I would have hated if I were using it. That permanent weather button on the side of the taskbar, the copilot button, "recommendations" of apps from the MS store that look like regular app icons, and so on. It looks like it's just being polluted more and more with bullshit, i.e. Windows is enshitifying. That said, MS is not really at much financial risk with Windows 11. They took a hit in the last couple years with macOS gaining market share, but that was largely hardware related rather than software related.

Bromelia_and_Bismuth

I've been mad about it every time Windows rolls out a new version. By the time I get used to or like an operating system, my computer takes a shit and I have to switch against my will.

busterdude123231

I'm still complaining that Microsoft said windows 10 was the last version. They fooled and trolled us.

Joe-Eye-McElmury

I hate every iteration of Windows, so… no, not worried at all. I’ll stick to Mac and Linux (depending on the task, I’ll use whichever machine is best suited to it).

Defiant-Snow8782

Macbooks aren't actually overpriced much, the hardware is amazing. Since the apple silicon transition budget models are often cheaper than windows computers with similar specs And it just feels good to use it

busterdude123231

Nope. Not happening. I'm sorry I'm not trying to be mean but apple had NEVER been my thing. Once again sorry for that aggressive approach I'm just mad at apple for being apple. Maybe if Microsoft falls?

Defiant-Snow8782

No problem. There's Linux as well, I was on it before getting a Mac. Much better than Windows to my taste

busterdude123231

i see where you're coming from. to pretty much any other user apple is pretty good. but for me i have specifics and microsoft fills (almost) all my needs for those. But you have your part and maybe apple completes those.

unnotable_person

you could try linux, although if you’re playing games you may have trouble depending on the game (that’s the only reason I haven’t switched to linux yet)
