I’ve pondered that also, and came to the conclusion that Leonard actually knew what Sheldon was plotting. He had already tried to revenge prank Leonard and Raj. Howard was left. Leonard pretended to casually ask what Sheldon was doing, and Sheldon replies, “Science. You wouldn’t understand”. Given Sheldon’s compulsive nature, he would’ve gone straight to Howard’s/Bernadette, and they would’ve been tipped off by Leonard. This is why Howard questions him as if he’s playing along, and it plays out as planned.

Knowing Howard, he had that prank set up ahead of time for any occasion that Sheldon tried to prank him.
I don’t think it had anything to do with the buzzer, I think it was a preplanned prank, waiting for Sheldon to try anything.
