This place is unbelievable.
I walked in expecting taco del mar and was greeted by an ensemble of Spanish voices singing while they cooked in the open kitchen.
I was served a massive burrito that had magically travelled 2500 km from SoCal to my hand in BC in 5 minutes.
DELICIOUS.
Go here. Hell, road trip here.
Yes, tasty, but we were there on a busy day and watching person after person scrambling for toppings, touching every surface and sniffing while they do it made us nearly hurl. We had already paid and picked up our food,, and used disposable spoons to grab a few toppings and ate outside
probably won't go back.
I'd rather smoke meat at home and make my own
You’d love actual Mexican food then haha, the lack of hygiene is where the flavour comes from 🫨
Sadly my partner and I feel that Desert Hills has gone downhill since they got rid of the self serve toppings
Not arguing on the taste. It was good. Just the sanitary conditions.
Last few years has definitely made me look closer at restaurant conditions, and just conditions in public places...
I’ve got to say, I tried CL on Saturday with my wife after hearing everyone’s rave reviews and we weren’t impressed. It wasn’t the worst Mexican we’ve ever had but it was far from great. Prefer Adelicia’s personally.
That's a cute little string of Mexican restaurants and businesses on Fraser. Does anybody have the inside track on how and why they all formed there? If I recall, the Viva La Mexico crew originally came to Canada as contract labor for local greenhouses and some of them were able to stay. Not sure if that was correct but I remember that from years ago. Maybe a similar situation with the other Mexican shops? They're all pretty cute and very authentic Mexican.
There's a Chancho's on Davie as well, I'm pretty sure they have a tortilla machine in the back, and they only make authentic Mexican corn tortillas. I would guess they are shipping the same tortillas to their other locations.
Lupitas is infinitely better. Actual authentic tacos. No pineapple or cabbage on carnitas or anything like that. also $ 5.50 for one taco??? Absolutely fucking ridiculous. $3 for a single taco at lupitas
Surprised I didn’t see these names!
Los Cuervos on mount pleasant I’ll go on the regular everyone is so nice, the drinks are great music is good. Food is awesome highly recommend
Baja racing on Cambie street is an awesome predominantly seafood based Mexican joint also, it’s a real gem that needs to be protected.
TPT is gross and has terrible service. There’s a better and more authentic place on 12th at 9th in New West, Ole Ole. Lined up like crazy every weekend.
Last time I was there the younger lady was doing her hair in the bar mirror, like hairspray and all. It gave authentic.
My Mexican boyfriend at the time loved their food
I ate there once a few years back and they made our whole table sing alone because we weren't singing along. We had just sat down and we're just getting settled. It was hilarious, the Food was amazing.
The owner of Machete is also a nutritionist and she makes all her dishes healthy. I can eat everyday their machete Sazon de Mama, guaco-toston and esquites.
Mi Casa Mexicana on 4th in Vancouver is pretty solid, and do proper tamales.
Puerto Mexico further down 4th does the most authentic street tacos I've found.
Ooooo is that what did the business in?! I always wondered. They seemed to beloved by the city and assumed they’d be around for decades.
They ruined Mexican food for me. In 2010 you could get 5 tacos and a power bar (burrito) for <$10. And the flavours blew my fucking socks off every time. Tacofino and the litany of other taco joints that ensued just don’t compare.
I think it was the ugly divorce because apparently the food went downhill around then. The husband died 4 years ago and I have a hunch it may have been a heart attack.
I don't get this one at all, the staff were charming but the food was pretty bad. If you are in the kelowna area at least try out latin fiesta in Rutland. it's more like the Mexican food you can get in places like Detroit or ya know mexico but light years better than two brothers.
Never was impressed by Gina's, althought admittedly I'm usually eating take out. Baby Salsa for that Cali-style Mexican, Jalapenos for the traditional style is usually how we cut it.
Yeah for those who have eaten in some of the trendy restaurants in Mexico City with a hot and modern food scene, El Santo is exactly that. Some people understand this and others don't. For the crowd that wants classic tacos, enchiladas etc, it turns out to be a bit of a disappointment. People often see a like view of "Mexican food" and they want just the standard Mexican staples, (which is all great stuff). For those that love food adventures and creative modern cuisine, it's a treat. My partner is from Guanajuato and we love to hit all the trendy and inventive restaurants in central Mexico and El Santo is exactly what some of these places are like.
Not what I think of when I think of Mexican food, and the owner is savage in response to google reviews. It’s more like fancy Mexican-inspired tacos and drinks than a real Mex place. Nice room.
The owner is actually a pretty nice guy, but I think maybe touchy about his restaurant. I do agree this isn't authentic Mexican, it's Mexican inspired and sometimes even fusion. I feel like they were better when they started and have strayed further over time, like, what used to be more classic, Mexican foods have been overly reinvented. Gone a bit too far.
Las Margarita's! 🍸Their Margarita's are Fabulous, they make their own salsa & chips which they give to every table! Really great!! The food and portions are Really Fantastic. Its been around for years with reason being an Excellent Mexican Restaurant!! 4th & Maple in Vancouver, Kitsilano.
I can only laugh at that, I've been to Mexico many times and continue going. Las Margs is a Fabulous Rest with Excellent food! Great atmosphere and ALWAYS busy! Has a nice patio for summer. Don't know where you are from and who you have talked to?? There's a reason it has been around for si many years!! Excellent food, great atmosphere and awesome Margaritas!!! 😁✌
Yellow Deli is run by Twelve Tribes Communities. Chilliwack residents are pretty well aware of this, but like the restaurant enough to go there anyhow. It has 4.6 stars on Google Maps. Most negative, and some positive, reviews mention that it is run by a cult.
I was actually just on r/behindthebastards when I got a notification of your reply. I only started listening a few months ago, and the backlog is huge. Haven't gotten to that episode yet.

Desert Hills in Cache Creek. Almost middle of nowhere, but trust me on this one.
Was going to add this as well. Unreal stuff lol.
Sounds good, but aren't SoCal burritos exactly what the OP's trying to avoid?
This is the best
damn I posted this but u beat me to it lol, have u tried la marqueza in osoyoos?
We liked that place too!
This and this. Honestly the best Mexican food I’ve had outside Mexico. Get the pork belly taco and you’re mind will be blown

They must have done it recently, as it was February this year when we were there last
Oh really? Maybe they reintroduced the toppings zone. Party on
I was there today and the self serve toppings are available. Was delicious!
Not arguing on the taste. It was good. Just the sanitary conditions. Last few years has definitely made me look closer at restaurant conditions, and just conditions in public places...
I just got back from quesnel they had self serve toppings and it was super clean
[удалено]
Yeah... being in a sanitary restaurant is such an odd thing to desire
Shout out to Cielito Lindo in Langley.
There is also Tacoholic right down a little bit past the one way. That's pretty authentic Mexican/Latin food.
Tacoholic is amazing
I’ve got to say, I tried CL on Saturday with my wife after hearing everyone’s rave reviews and we weren’t impressed. It wasn’t the worst Mexican we’ve ever had but it was far from great. Prefer Adelicia’s personally.

That Quesa Birria 🫠
My best friend and I used to go there every week back in 2011/12 and we’d usually be the only ones there.I’m so happy it’s still around.
Second this. Also, next door is Los Guerreros market. They have incredible take away and their selection of food is amazing.
Chancho in East Van has the best tortillas I have had outside of Mexico and California.
I agree with this, Chancho's tortillas are the best.
There's a Chancho's on Davie as well, I'm pretty sure they have a tortilla machine in the back, and they only make authentic Mexican corn tortillas. I would guess they are shipping the same tortillas to their other locations.
Davie is the old location and they indeed had a tortilleria. They closed that one some time ago and relocated to Commercial.
Ah thanks, yeah I moved out of Vancouver so haven't been back in too long.
Lupitas in Maple Ridge is hands down some of the best Mexican food I have ever eaten
Had Taco fan in Ridge last night, damn good
[удалено]
I will do that!
Lupitas is infinitely better. Actual authentic tacos. No pineapple or cabbage on carnitas or anything like that. also $ 5.50 for one taco??? Absolutely fucking ridiculous. $3 for a single taco at lupitas
2nd this.

4th!

Agreed, this is very much the kind of place that you will find in any working class neighborhood in Mexico. The food is as authentic as the owner.
I’ve heard very good things about that place.
My Mexican partner was so happy to find they served micheladas in summer!
Ay Chihuahua and Zapoteca in White Rock if you’re in the area. Sal y Limon is also pretty good but I wish they would get better chips.
Zapoteca now also in Kits
Two locations, now with double the flavor! I am just happy I can walk down the hill to the OG location and slowly climb back home after a good meal.
Surprised I didn’t see these names! Los Cuervos on mount pleasant I’ll go on the regular everyone is so nice, the drinks are great music is good. Food is awesome highly recommend Baja racing on Cambie street is an awesome predominantly seafood based Mexican joint also, it’s a real gem that needs to be protected.
I love the Taco Club in Revelstoke. I plan road trips around that place.

Dangerously so haha!
I ate here last summer and agree. It’s delicious! Plus the patio was hoppin’
Lupita in maple ridge
Taqueria Playa Tropical in New Westminster
TPT is gross and has terrible service. There’s a better and more authentic place on 12th at 9th in New West, Ole Ole. Lined up like crazy every weekend.

Machete on main. 🇲🇽🌮🌯💘
The owner of Machete is also a nutritionist and she makes all her dishes healthy. I can eat everyday their machete Sazon de Mama, guaco-toston and esquites.
Seconded! Had such an amazing meal there this week. Exactly what I needed!
How is this place? Always see people in it
It's seriously amazing. Very authentic, the people are super lovely and pretty good value at that. Highly recommend.

La Marqueza in Osoyoos. The best Mexican I’ve had since moving to BC

I love Mi Casa chunky guacamole, and their quesa-taco is the bomb!

Adelita’s near Kingsway
Tacos El Gringo in Castlegar Cantina del Centro in Nelson
Go across the border to Bellingham
Hernandez in Victoria, 2006-2012ish?
good shout, i remember it well!
Owners were real characters. Lots of stories about their ugly divorce and the passive aggressive notes they left all over their space.
Ooooo is that what did the business in?! I always wondered. They seemed to beloved by the city and assumed they’d be around for decades. They ruined Mexican food for me. The lil taco truck on the highway on the south side of Oliver is pretty good
Cantina Vallarta in salmon arm
Two brothers in West Kelowna
I don't get this one at all, the staff were charming but the food was pretty bad. If you are in the kelowna area at least try out latin fiesta in Rutland. it's more like the Mexican food you can get in places like Detroit or ya know mexico but light years better than two brothers.
Love this place.

Si senor in poco!
Shhhh let's keep this gem a secret , I'll admit tacos aren't the best but everything else is GREAT!!!
Really. I like their tacos. The tostadas are what I go for though.
Best place ever was in Kits. Sadly, Topanga Cafe suffered a fatal fire years ago. Nothing has come close since. If any have, please post!
North Van check out Cilantro and Jalepenó in Lonsdale Quay. Las Margaritas is solid too
Leo Burrito in Radium
Hugo's mexican kitchen in chilliwack!
La Tacquisa in Esquimalt. Their habanero salsa is fantastic. My butthole still remembers the tingle.
I don’t know if it’s the best in BC but Gina’s in Nanaimo is great.
A hidden gem in town is Jalapenos. Always demolish the Flautas plate there.
Jalapeños is so much better, Gina’s has always seemed more like Tex-mex to me
Never was impressed by Gina's, althought admittedly I'm usually eating take out. Baby Salsa for that Cali-style Mexican, Jalapenos for the traditional style is usually how we cut it.
Brings back memories my parents used to take me there so long ago.
I love Gina’s!
Haciendo Cielito Lindo in Kamloops, fantastic and authentic!
Su Casa Mexican Cafe on Crowsnest highway outside of Bridgeville/Osoyoos. Most random location ever but incredible food and owners.
Go across the border to Bellingham…”Jalapeños” …authentic with Chicano staff and bonus points for massive margaritas.
idk about proper authentic (never been), but the mexican on granville island (alimentaria) is amazing
It’s eye-opening how many celebrated Mexican food places there are in BC, I had no idea!
Miltomates in Port Kells. I lived in Oaxaca for a bit and they do authentic moles and… mmmm… way too good!
El Santo in New West
Yeah for those who have eaten in some of the trendy restaurants in Mexico City with a hot and modern food scene, El Santo is exactly that. Some people understand this and others don't. Bellingham.
El Gitano in Bellingham
I had some pretty nice tacos at Sal y Limon on Kingsway.
Andale food truck in Port Moody! Get their birria tacos. 🤤
BC is huge. That's like asking for the best Mexican food in California
More like asking for the best poutine in CA
Well that will depend on where people live and their opinions of what is the best! What's your pic?
Familia Tamm - Kelowna
Mercado Coquitlam
Lots of great Mexican in Kelowna, but my picks would be Latin Fiesta or Salsa y Sabor
Funny, every mexican I know talked about this place with utter disgust.
Adelicias at 20505 Fraser Hwy, Langley is by far the best I've had and by other suggestions it seems Langley in general has amazing mexican food.
Fiesta Loca, Hugo's, Alicia's Flavours.
Chilliwack surprisingly has some good Mexican. Fiesta Loca is my favorite.
Chilliwack is a good restaurant city in general. Just double check that those restaurants are not run by a cult.
Cult? What kind of cult?
Yellow Deli is run by Twelve Tribes Communities. Chilliwack residents are pretty well aware of this, but like the restaurant enough to go there anyhow. It has 4.6 stars on Google Maps. Most negative, and some positive, reviews mention that it is run by a cult.
Sure, it’s run by a cult, but their food is awesome.
One five star review calls it a “cult classic”.
Yeah very questionable folks but god damn the sandwiches… pretty on point.
https://youtu.be/TtI84yu9FPs?si=QKgvosGe-N7loxFr Behind the Bastards Podcast on the Twelve Tribes.
I was actually just on r/behindthebastards when I got a notification of your reply. I only started listening a few months ago, and the backlog is huge. Haven't gotten to that episode yet.
Yes! When I lived in Chilliwack, we’d go to Hugo’s and Alicia’s Flavours all the time! Haven’t had good Mexican food since we left…
Love Hugo’s! Their salsas & jalapeño margaritas are incredible
Sol y limon. Kingsway and Fraser in Vancouver
I know you're getting hammered on the down votes but that's a cute little Sal y Limon location with good food and a savagely right parking lot
Taco Bell in Surrey
Thoughts on La Taqueria on Yukon?
Not bad, but absurdly expensive for what it is. Was much better when it was less fancy up on Cambie.
Taco Bell
Why do I dislike corn tortillas? I love everything about Mexican food but the corn tortillas. I wish I could just have the soft yummy flour ones.
Straight to jail
But the corn ones are so bad
[удалено]
Lots of options really. There is Tijuana but really anything in Baja California is good. :p
