Yeah, he was one of the very small group of players that went overseas during the Lockout and decided to not come back to the NHL. His car is still at the arena probably.
When he left during the lock-out for Russia, he never came back and the Canucks realized he actually left his car parked at the arena. Just abandoned it.
I remember him. I distinctively remember him scoring an OT winner (I believe it was the Gold Medal game TBH) at the World Juniors against Canada in Winnipeg. Luongo was in net as well. I think this must have been 98 or maybe 99.
my biggest memory was that some fans were calling him "Chubs" and a someone posted on a message board PLEASE STOP CALLING HIM THAT for hopefully obvious reasons.
This thread had me look him up, he was basically 30 or 31 when he retired, which is crazy. I remember when he left thinking he was a perfect example of the type of player the KHL would steal. Desirable bottom six guys who can be top 6 in Russia.
In the late 90s early 2000s, when I was a teenager, I used to wait by the carpark to get Canucks autographs as they were leaving. Some players would drive without stopping. Some would roll down their window and do a few. With some it depended on whether the Canucks won or lost.
Chubarov would always pull his car over, engage, and sign for everyone. He was the only one.
Thinking about it in retrospect only increases my appreciation. It's 10:00 at night, work is done, and his job was insanely high pressure with an element of being physically abused (hits, blocked shots,. I'm sure he desperately wanted to go home. But he still stopped.
I regularly think of good old Artem. He was the first player who I developed a liking to. I randomly remember watching the goal against Nashville and he became first favorite player.
Then when I started playing, I became a chippy, checking center who couldn't score lol who woulda thought
I remember overrating him to no end - which considering my age at the time (around 15) makes complete sense. I thought that he was going to be the best faceoff man in the NHL and be a great second/third line player and when he didn't come back post lockout I thought it was awful.
This makes me feel old.

Yes. He has an Audi.
If I’m not mistaken, it was a Saturn. Legend has it it’s still parked under GM Place.
What’s the story behind it? I heard that but didn’t get a joke

Missed an opportunity to bring him back out for the playoffs and have him beat the crap out of it with a Nashville logo on it.
Lol
u/ArtemChubarov can tell you all about him
(For those out of the loop, this is the Reddit account of The Athletic reporter Thomas Drance)
nice try drance
Thomas Drance remembers
Jan Bulis level of the streets won’t forget players
His first 4 or 5 goals were game winners.
I wonder if his car is still parked at the arena
Remember him being a menace on the dot in 03 and 04 video games.

"oh know fuck.....oh wait that was a Canucks prospect that just eliminated Canada.....I can live with it".
Yep, decent player but overrated for some reason by this fan base. Iirc it was because we finally got a competent 3C.
Overrated because we were in a desert of mediocre signings and drafts.
and his name is awesome
It was the Detroit series. He had a game or two that was unreal. That's his lore.
Loved chubi

IIRC Chubarov scored the winning goal on Lou when the Russians beat Canada for the World Juniors.
Yes, he famously left his car at the arena.
Oh yes! #13. Whenever there is a post asking for an obscure NHL player I name him.

my favorite player #13 on your program #1 in your heart

I was at the game where he scored his first nhl goal against the blackhawks.

The Chubber! Good 4th line center
What is this Drance's burner account?
The silent assassin? Of course!
I was not yet watching hockey by that point, but I sure did play as him a lot on NHL 2003!
Chubes and letowski were a fun duo
I remember he was on the front page of the sports section in the Province and the headline was “A Work of Artem” or something along those lines.
Loved him! He was the best 3/4C in the league when he was here
#13! Chuubie!

I think in one of the EA NHL career modes I played he became a superstar with 90+ ratings.
An Audi? What a cool caer lol
