This is amazing but the fifth element is far from the last movie to use miniatures comparable to this.

avamk

Any other good examples?

Colt_H

Blade runner, Lord of the rings if you are looking for cities made in miniatures, if you're looking for extensive use of miniatures in general, the list is nearly endless. James bond, Star wars, Inception, Grand budapest hotel, etc...

**Large scale** miniatures. Take another look at those pictures.

Colt_H

Have you [seen](https://www.fxguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/10Jul/newdeal/Inception_CherryPicker2.jpg) the [size](https://i.redd.it/y5gkafmamdv11.jpg) of [some](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/51b3dc8ee4b051b96ceb10de/1510642697563-YKJON00JFNKHGPSR6MX0/blade-runner-behind-the-scenes-miniature.jpg) of the [miniatures](https://sm.pcmag.com/t/pcmag_uk/photo/h/harry-pott/harry-potter_y4za.800.jpg) I [mentioned](https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/godzilla_1998_v0_xf51t2xapnxa1.jpg) in my previous post?

Godzilla was really the only one of those examples that is on the same scale as the Fifth miniatures, primarily because, IIRC, they're using as their basis the Hudsucker Proxy city buildings. Fifth Element was going to use these, Mark oversaw their construction at his previous company, Stetson Visual Services, which he sold his interest in to his partners to become a VFX for hire, beginning with this film. But those miniatures got locked down in a rental on another project so a new "bigature" city had to be created for Fifth. The NY city miniature shoot took all available stage space at Digital Domain which forced James Cameron to do the miniature photography for Titanic at rented stages, versus at the facility he partially owned at the time, much to his annoyance. Also, because those stages were on sandy ground that used to be wetlands at one point extensive rotoscoping had to be employed to clean up the miniature photography because the ground shifted sufficiently enough between lighting setups for beauty and matte passes that the mattes didn't line up. Which furthered Cameron's angst over being scheduled out of his own stages :D

Yes, but it’s still _extremely_ uncommon. Lot’s of movies still use smaller scale miniatures, but it’s increasingly unusual to use these large ones.

rxsheepxr

I hate how ugly AI upscaling is for photos.

slowupwardclimb

Yeah, I'm no expert, but this could have been upscaled using better techniques.

Major-Excuse1634

Here's what was likely the original size they got ahold of, as it's what's been passed around for years by the people \*in\* the photo... https://preview.redd.it/c6iw2nzfsl3d1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6e2d313b84c917dceb6b282d9775d9955f6233ba

Paralytica

They look like Imhotep’s crowd of zombified people in the Mummy Edit: in the group photo

NocturnalPermission

Picture 3 they surely put all the scary people in the back.

shizzydino

Yeah, what the hell is going on there?

spaceatlas

AI upscaling

Major-Excuse1634

It's a pretty normal crew photo. What's going on is a lot of people pretty dang proud of their work. edit: I'm just kinda scratching my head here because I don't really associate the aesthetic of this film with "cassette futurism" but okay.

MonkeyLongstockings

If that's how my face will look like when I am proud of my work then forget it. Zoom in on the picture and you will see what we mean.

Major-Excuse1634

smh...that's someones terrible AI upscaling and a lot of projection

TheAmazingMikey

I’m guessing you didn’t zoom in on their faces?

Major-Excuse1634

I'm guessing you didn't see other hints you're looking at a terrible ai upscale of an image?

g_r_u_b_l_e_t_s

Blade Runner 2049 had many of these large scale miniatures. It came out in 2017.

Hunor_Deak

[https://youtu.be/sLxxbfsj8IM?si=rFi--dctjExIcbVS](https://youtu.be/sLxxbfsj8IM?si=rFi--dctjExIcbVS) Not as big as the Fifth Element sets. But they are quite extensive.

Hunor_Deak

I forgot that.

Sea_Cycle_909

No, I knew about these; * [FIFTH ELEMENT miniature effects](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WAi7N-3pyCo) interview by piercefilm productions (Great channel) * [Fifth Element, creating the Mondoshawans](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lgi7JeDpwxM&pp=ygUqZml0aCBlbGVtZW50IG1vbmRvc2hhd2FuIHByYWN0aWNhbGUgZWZmZWN0) (Segment)

OldWrangler9033

Lost art indeed.

nottitantium

I did not know this aaaarrh so amazing!!!

perpetualis_motion

Are these classified as "bigatures" or "humungotures"?

DAJLMODE55

Work like this is a beautyfull performance for creative spirits!👍

tomajino

My all time favorite movie! I didn't have it on DVD as a kid but at some point I saw behind the scenes and finally realized just how much effort it took to make the movie. But I wonder what they did with the miniatures, they could easily do mini episodes of life in 2263.

the_0tternaut

They're called biggatures.

sabrefudge

What the fuck is wrong with their faces? Is that photograph cursed or something?
