they were okay. the sony ESP anti-skip tech from a few years later is light-years beyond what they could do in 1988 ESP was the first time you could actually use a discman in car without it skipping all over the place the antiskip before that was more like for people walking around on the floor near the player. those portable players were extremely sensitive to vibrations because they had no cushioning like a hifi deck CD player would

doesn't really matter. any Sony discman that has "ESP" written on the top will do the trick. They were made from \~1995 or 1996 onward. other features you might want are a line level output (many discman's only have headphone level output) or an optical output

1988...! Here in Eastern Europe at that time I didn't even have a cassette tape Walkman! CDs only started appearing here in the early '90s and they were super expensive. I think I got my first portable CD player around 1996 or 1997.
