I work at a shelter and animals whose owners leave them behind literally mourn or look for their owners constantly. It’s heartbreaking. If you can keep your baby, do everything you can to keep them! My vote would be the 15 hour flight.

BeeJ1013

I also work at a shelter and I've seen the same thing. Lots of cats are depressed after being left. :(

fullmetalfeminist

This is so hard to read since I had to surrender my two cats when I became homeless. They were so affectionate and used to follow me around my one-bed flat, snuggle under the duvet with me, and express deep concern when I took a bath. They were 6 when I surrendered them, so I just hope they found a happy home 😭

dimondeyes80

Hey, I absolutely feel your pain of loss. I had to check myself into the hospital/rehab back in November, and while I was there, both of my cats and almost all but one of my bearded dragons were taken, despite the fact that I had 'friends' coming in to help take care of them. When I got out, first thing I saw was the animal County control and care notice. Only one beardie remained. He frequently escaped his enclosure, and I guess that day, he decided that hiding under my bed was the best idea. I came home to an absolutely empty apartment. I walked into my bedroom, and I guess Ghost (the beardie), recognized my footsteps, and popped his head out from underneath my bed. Now, everytime I try to put him back in his enclosure, he pitches a fit. I'm guessing because he's traumatized. So, he just sleeps in bed with me now. I'm so sorry you lost your fuzzies. I'm sure they went to good homes. If you don't mind, I'm sending prayers for you and for them. <3<3

Howsoonisnever-

Animal Control didn’t know where they were? For fucks sake, I would be beside myself. I’m so sorry for your loss. Best wishes on your sobriety. I’m 10 years sober myself.

dimondeyes80

Thank you, so much for both of the comments. And ACC wouldn't tell me where they were unless I paid over $2,000 up front, to get them back. I would do absolutely ANYTHING for my guys, but after the hospital visit, surgery, rehab and medication, I literally did not have more than about $200 to my name. And hey, if no one has told you lately, 10 years is an amazingly strong accomplishment!! I'm really proud of you, and thank you for being a hopeful light in what had been an awful past 12 months. Please keep up the awesome work, you give people like me hope. Xoxo

Howsoonisnever-

2k to get them back after 3 days? That’s extortion. I’m so sorry. Idk what recovery program you follow, but I daily pray the full serenity prayer. Saying it for you and your lost loves today.

dimondeyes80

I know. I couldn't afford it. It absolutely wrecked me, especially since I never got to say goodbye. AA here. And again, thank you, I definitely need it today. Sending you all the virtual hugs I have. <3<3

stanleysgirl77

I don’t understand how that is not a case of theft - how the hell could anyone walk into your home without permission and steal your pets?

dimondeyes80

Maybe because they were there from Animal County Care and Control... I really don't know. Both of my cats, and all but one of my dragons were well fed, they weren't housed together, and were healthy. There was only one whom I was rehabbing, who was skinny and underweight and had MBD (metabolic bone disease, due to his previous owner not taking care of him properly). His name was Larry. He was soooo skittish when I rescued him. Hated to be held, hated my fingers and lept at the walls of his enclosure when I walked by. MBD is irreversible, but I adopted him at the right time, and made sure he had the proper lighting and a 40g enclosure with lots of things to climb on. From what I understand, from the ACC report, they thought he was too sick, and put him to sleep. (sorry for the edit, my spelling mistakes were getting to me)

rhymeswithorangey

I’m so proud of you. As the daughter of an addict, and the ex wife of an addict, I am so proud of you for having the strength to start every day anew. If we can help you get your family back, pls don’t hesitate to let me know.

dimondeyes80

Damnit... I swear someone is like, murdering an onion right now and holding it up to my eyeballs. I'm so sorry you had to experience addiction from the other side. It takes a very strong person to cope. My dad was an alocholic as well. He passed when I was only 7. He was a pilot, and one of his old United emblems is glued to the front of my BB - it's there to help me remember. And hey, this may sound kinda silly, but in the words of Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin: "You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." Hugs to you <3<3

Bbaftt7

You should be consulting any and all free legal services. $2,000 for information about pets that were taken from you is straight extortion. I can’t believe it.

dimondeyes80

I agree. Hiring a lawyer, unfortunately was absolutely out of the question at the time. Not many in my area would be willing to take the case on. I've been through the legal process before (dealt with an abusive ex), and it would have still cost me the money to get them back, court fees and lawyer fees. I just couldn't afford it. And it still kills me to this day to not have them here. A few weeks ago, I had a dream that my oldest cat, Samantha (she was about 22-23/y and I'd had her since she was a kitten), jumped onto my bed and laid right next to me, like she always did. So, I'm hoping that was a sign that she's ok, wherever she is, and she's safe and warm and happy.

fullmetalfeminist

Oh man, that is so hard, I'm glad that at least you have poor Ghost. I'm not religious, but I still appreciate the gesture

cattenchaos

Did those friends *really* go check on them, or were they making up a story?

dimondeyes80

I really don't think I'll ever know the truth to be honest. The person who was supposed to be watching over them even showed up at the hospital that very same day and didn't say a goddamn word to me. About 3 days in, against Dr's advice, I checked myself out because I just felt like something was wrong. It was just a gut feeling. Took an ubee home, and that's when I discovered what happened. I checked with all of the local rescue groups, the SPCA, the shelters, and no one had any record of them. It was absolutely devastating, because all of my guys were rescues and I know they were terrified when random people just showed up and ripped them out of their enclosures and their home.

cattenchaos

I feel so bad for you. If you felt something was wrong, the animals got taken away, and your friends didn’t say anything, then they probably weren’t even there. I’m sorry for the loss of the cats and the lizards. Hopefully one day they will be found…

dimondeyes80

Thank you, so much for the kind comments, and I hope so too. Just love your floof to bits and pieces, give lots of hugs, a soft, warm bed and treats, because you don't know what you got 'til it's suddebly gone. <3<3<3

BeeJ1013

I'm sure that was the best thing for them at the time. So, no judgment here! I recognize that there are good reasons why people surrender their pets. Given that yours were so sweet, I'm sure they were adopted quickly. :)

fullmetalfeminist

Thank you, it's very kind of you to say! Yeah they gave me forms to fill out and after the other questions they had a little box for "anything you think people should know about your cat?" I needed extra paper for all my info! "Prefers to drink from the tap." "Loves to climb." "Prefers fishing rod type toys." "Needs to snuggle on you pillow with his back to you and his head smushed into your face for at least 15 minutes when you get into bed." "Loves houmous." "Your lap belongs to her."

slowmath

So sorry you had to give them up

fullmetalfeminist

Thank you! I tried everything I could but things were so bad that I had absolutely no options. I nearly starved and ended up with permanent health issues.

amyhenderson_

Sometimes the best thing is the hardest thing and you had the courage to do what was best for all of you. So much love to you - people like to think they can do the right thing no matter what, but you KNOW you have that in you - I hope it serves you well.❤️

fullmetalfeminist

What a lovely thing to say, thank you so much ❤️❤️

YourStreetHeart

You did the only thing you could for those cats. Society failed you, you were in an impossible position. Being unhoused is emotionally and physically brutal. I’m sorry you had to experience this, loose your kitty besties and now deal with the health issues that resulted from societies collective failure to make sure everyone has shelter and food.

Veryprettybutterfly

I'm so sorry you had to go through that. The situation was bad enough in itself let alone losing your furry family on top!

Cimejies

I just adopted two 6 year old cats a month ago, so there's a good chance someone out there did the same for your fur babies too.

Jimmy_Twotone

"My life is literally falling down around me" is not the same as "My cat will have one shitty day and then live with me someplace new."

SkyScamall

Wrong age and probably a different country but my cat ended up in the shelter under similar circumstances. She's found a new home and is very loved. I don't judge her previous owners for giving her up, it doesn't sound like they had a choice. I wish I could let them know she's alright and how loved she is here.

[deleted]

The animals who were mourning got very, very special treatment when I was heavily involved in animal welfare. There is nothing worse than a sad animal to break a shelter workers psyche, so lots of walks and treats and extra Kong toys or extra cat nip for those guys! (And then everyone else would get it too bc were SUCKERS)

wordup46

There is an enormous difference between surrendering a cat because you are unable to care for them safely, versus not wanting to figure out how to travel with them. You made a difficult decision, but it was because you understood what was at stake. It also helps that they have each other, I know the shelters near me encourage adopting bonded pairs together.

newyne

I'm in the same camp; my girl was 13 and died shortly after we had to rehome her... It *still* bothers me a lot. On the other hand, the boy *adored* his new family. He'd never bonded much with us because... We didn't plan for him, and he never got along with the other two cats, who were always around us (the other one died prior to us being foreclosed on)... Well, anyway, sounds like he's much happier there.

cheesecakecaramel

This is so heartbreaking.. I cried the first time I held her, I knew right then she was supposed to be my cat. Every time I tried to think about rehoming her, I got teary eyed. Seeing all these comments made me sure that she’s going to be okay, she’ll survive the flight and we’ll be together at least.

paperthinpatience

I am so glad to hear this! ❤️ Good luck to both of you!!

ILove2Bacon

I just moved from Oakland to Long Beach and had to make the 8+ hour drive with my two cats. The vet gave us gabapentin for them. They slept basically the whole drive, and then found a quiet corner as soon as we got to our new place and slept some more.

pinecone10

Hey OP, I just moved across the US (east coast to west coast) with 5 cats. Because I have that many, it was smarter for me to have them brought in a vehicle rather than fly. The trip took them 2 and 1/2 days. If it’s in your budget (and location dependent), there are professional companies that will accompany your pet depending on your needs. However, in general (and also if it’s in your budget), talk to your cat’s vet about getting them some anti-anxiety meds for the journey. It makes it MUCH easier for them to handle everything. Additionally, a calming hormone plugin for the new place will help them (ymmv depending, but it works for many cats) decompress in the new place with less stress. Good luck. ♥️

Stign

I have a question if you don't mind. I'm breaking up with my girlfriend after 10 years and I'm leaving behind the 2 cats we have together. [They're 8 and 5 years old Ragdolls](https://imgur.com/a/qZQnoAZ.jpg) and they're brother and sister. (same father and mother). My ex suggested that we each take one. But I can't split them apart because they're really fond of each other. They always eat, sleep and play together. I work a lot more hours a day than my ex does, so she will have more time to spend with them than I do. (she also works from home). We also have a 4 year old son together who's really close with the 5 year old cat, so that's why I won't be taken them with me. I love them to death because they're very affectionate and loving cats. They're always around me when I was at home. They slept with us in bed, laid with us when we're watching TV and they loved to see us poop. It's breaking my heart I won't be seeing them as much anymore, it will be 2-3 minutes max every 2 weeks when I'm dropping of my son. **My question**: do you think they'll still remember me when I'm gone or recognize me when I'm allowed to see them? Sorry for the long text, but I'm tearing up every day and night when I think about the fact I'll be gone in 3 weeks time.

DPDoctor

u/Stign YES, your rags will always remember you - your voice, your scent, etc. You are doing an amazingly selfless thing in not splitting them up and allowing them to stay in the home they know. That's a lot of courage there and speaks to your character, that you are putting others' needs (including the kitties') above your own. Perhaps there will be times when you drop off your son that you can visit with your floofs for a while, or other arrangements that work for your schedule. Ah yes, your bathroom buddies sound similar to our two voids, standing guard when we do our business, lol.

paperthinpatience

I’m sorry you’re going through all that! I think they’ll still recognize you. My parents have cats that recognize me when I come visit, even though it’s every couple of months.

emilyyc

This breaks my heart. I would end up adopting so many cats.

foomits

yea... I've flat out seen my cat sleep without moving for 15 hours. they can make it through a flight.

TwatsThat

I think some people are worried about the conditions that pets are sometimes subject to when they're not allowed to travel in the cabin with the humans. It may not be *super* common but it is worth being aware that pets do still die during air travel.

[deleted]

A good airline will have a dedicated space for transporting animals. I flew my cat from the UK to the USA on British Airways and they had a special warmed area of the cargo section just for animals. He got fresh water every couple of hours and the cabin crew checked on him regularly. Not saying nothing ever goes wrong (it's air travel, of course stuff occasionally goes wrong) but I was very impressed with how seriously they took it.

beeboopPumpkin

That’s amazing. I lived in Phoenix for a long time (gets hot as hell during the summer) and it was sadly decently common (meaning you’d hear about it a few times every summer) for animals to die even while waiting on the tarmac to get loaded on the plane. I wish they took as much care as this. :/

sanna43

My sister used to date a baggage handler, and he said that sometimes baggage handlers don't like animals, and will treat the animal carrier accordingly. He said never to let them handle your pet.

MrsTurtlebones

My sister flew with a dachshund and tuxedo cat from Phoenix to Scotland in December. They got to keep the pets in the cabin with them in their approved carriers. They made it work by flying into Amsterdam (I think, maybe Paris) and taking a special pet transport that goes through the Chunnel into the UK. It worked out well since they had the pets with them the whole time.

Sclog

Hitching onto this comment to agree that those people are idiots, and to also let you know that cats can have melatonin, just very small doses like half a milligram, it saved my ass and my cats ass when I had to drive from FL to CA. Also some cats will not drink when they are stressed so every so often dip your finger into some water and put the water on their nose, it’ll force them to lick it off therefor getting some water! Best of luck on the travels and give extra scritches!

-medicalthrowaway-

Here to say that 300mcg (close to half a milligram) is actually, found in studies, to be the best dose for humans as well... Especially regarding resetting/changing your circadian rhythm So OP, you should take the same dose you give your cat to help out with your own jet lag

LadyPillboxChocolate

Very good tip about the water.

hufflepuff-is-best

My cat, Bridgett, and I flew from California to Kentucky during the COVID lockdown. I had to relocate to KY for work. Together, we traveled a total of 13 hours, with one connection and a 3 hour layover. We were on mostly empty flights. I gave her a half of a children’s Benadryl every 6 hours to keep her calm. During the flight, she was mostly on leash, except during takeoff and landing when she had to be in her carrier. She pretty much slept the whole time. She also attracted a lot of attention and became a bit of a celebrity in the airport. Before we went, we did a lot of preparation with carrier training. I would have her go in her carrier, then strap it onto my carryon and walk her up and down my driveway until she was used to it. She got lots of treats and praise for all of her hard work. https://preview.redd.it/s2wo225d6pha1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d8a5366aa843fa0a17abb0c44061a9d215bfc762 (The flight attendants gave me the go ahead to let her nap on the seat)

questformaps

15 hours vs the rest of her liftetime.....hmmmm. hard choice.

Rstrofdth

Brought two cats from the USA to the middle east well over 15 hours and they were fine. Stop talking to these morons they have no idea what they are talking about.

[deleted]

Even if they're not fine for 24 hours, they'll recover. And then the fun of exploring the new place begins!

Magnum820

Some people should mind their own business. The vet should be able to recommend the best path for that flight. Safe travels to you and your girl.

[deleted]

Yes. Wish more ppl mentioned the vet. They probably know what medications might be appropriate for the flight+ the cat’s health. Like, I wouldn’t take my cat on a 15hr flight without gabapentin, but that’s also my cat and I know her needs and personality.

This ☝️💯My cat was born and raised in Hawaii. Took the flight over to Las Vegas and four months later drove 24+ hours to North Dakota. He is now a seasoned traveler 😁 On the flight over to the mainland, I kept him underneath my seat, he was very quiet and seemed to enjoy the flight. It really blew people's mind once they found out there was a cat in the cabin of the plane (I guess most people don't know that you can do this)! On the drive from Vegas to ND, he loved it! We went to Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, South Dakota, and finally our new domicile in North Dakota. We stayed in Motel 6's along the way (they allow pets). Anyone trying to tell you that it's animal abuse and you need to "re-home" your furry friend, are either incredibly stupid, or have hidden aspirations for obtaining said furry friend. Don't ever trust those people! https://preview.redd.it/amnqbwltamha1.jpeg?width=3120&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=23d8ebfb86376ce5817bcd5d574de437fbe87078 My guy couldn't be more happy, not only in the fact that he is a seasoned traveler, but that we are still together!

bhp126

LOL. DON’T TRUST THESE PEOPLE. Great response. But you may be on to something. “We’ll take care of her if you need to go….”

RealGunRunner808

I've seen it play out many times! It happened to me when I was a young guy, and I've seen it happen to a lot of people. It just sucks once you find out they will do anything to avoid giving your furry friend back, at all costs.. 😭

RevolutionarySyrup99

The same thing happened to me!! I lost multiple friends over it because they stole my cat when we had "written" agreement over text that it was temporary during a move. The friend I trusted said his 3 months (paid) watching my boy made him love him more than I did after 4 years. It was one of the hardest points in my life as well, and he knew I couldn't afford to take him to court. The only solace I have in losing him is that the dude who wouldn't give him back takes good care of him, so I know he's safe at least. Still sucks.

PickleBeast

Had that happen with our dog. Dude watched her for a week while we were out of town and when we got back he wouldn’t let us have her. His reasoning was that he had a bigger yard and he’d grown very attached to her. We did get her back after about a month of negotiations and almost going to civil court. I couldn’t believe the audacity this person had to think it was ok to just kidnap someone else’s dog.

ConsiderationWest587

OK I have a happy story for y'all. I did fostering and I got two cats, the story was the girl (who owned the cats) had a boyfriend who didn't like them or something, so she gave them up. Nice cats. I would take them to events, nobody wanted them. I had them for at least a year. One day, the organization called me- basically the girl had dumped her bf and was looking for her cats. So they went home!! I'm glad I could hold on to them until she came to her senses lol

[deleted]

There’s no way I’d choose a guy over my cats (or any pet). As soon as I hear “I’m allergic to cats”…buh-bye. I made a commitment to these tiny turds and I’m not breaking it. Glad to hear she took her cats back, I hope she thinks more clearly next time.

PointlessSemicircle

I am actually allergic to cats but I have a cat lol. You just take an antihistamine and get on with it, it doesn’t even bother me that much. I’d choose my cat over my boyfriend for sure though, he’s my baby.

RealGunRunner808

Unfortunately, when talking about cats, most every cat doesn't come with a bill of sale that totals 1k. Be it rehoming fee or rescue. Maine-coons and Bengals are the only cats that I can think of that come with a bill of sale that equals 1k or more. With that being said, the lawyers retainer fee alone, is going to cost a minimum of 2.5k.. just to start fighting for your furry friend back. Most people can't fight for their furry Friends back because that's a HUGE chunk of money. Just food for thought.

[deleted]

PickleBeast

I think they meant 1k invested in the care and keeping of the animal

TheObservationalist

Yes but adoption paperwork from foster agencies, rabies vaccine records, and veterinary records all form a paper trail of ownership and financial support.

Superb-Draft

That's so bizarre. They could have just gotten another cat of their own. People are very strange.

RevolutionarySyrup99

I KNOW!! Some people just like things that aren't theirs, I guess :((

BobbySwiggey

It's also like "No, Daddy, I want *that one*, NOW!" Folks get hung up on one particular thing and won't accept any alternative like a spoiled kid, even though that particular thing is already spoken for or was never meant for them in the first place

Proinsias37

I hate to say it, but I'm on the other side of that equation.. and in my case it was very true! Had a roommate who got kittens, she didn't change the litter so they got ear infections, she didn't give them the meds, didn't let them in her room.. the bailed to move in with a boyfriend. I took care of them both while she lived there and when she left. Loved them, and a year later without seeing them suddenly said 'I want my cats back'. So I said fuck no, take me to court. I still have them 9 years later :)

RealGunRunner808

I would've said the same 💯 anyone who abandons, neglects, or harms a pet in any way, does not deserve the company of said pet. Sadly our furry friends have next to zero rights when it comes to shit like that. So I I applaud you for taking them in and saying no!

RealGunRunner808

I feel that pain. Really wish people weren't such shitheads 💯

Charlie truly does look like a little gentleman. Thank you for saving the brothers.

33JimmieLee33

Unfortunately, there was a third that was run over by a car the day before I trapped them. It will always break my heart. I was going to take all 3. I don't think I'll ever get over it. It will always haunt me.

RealGunRunner808

I'm sure that one is still hanging out with the brothers 😁 I'm a strong believer that cats see shit we don't.

My introduction to finding out cats can fly on planes in passenger seating was on a flight from Phoenix to Atlanta. My girlfriend and I are big cat people and I spotted a young woman with a travel carrier with an adorable cat inside. She opens the carrier and a cat in a harness gets out and just walks around her. Well while this woman was on her phone and not paying attention this cat proceeded to sniff her bag and then take a shit right on top of it. The woman notices, gets upset, and the little guy gets banished immediately back into his carrier.

Appropriate_Mud1629

I would imagine her bag was the only familiar scent the cat could find that wasnt actually her owner ...The poor desperate cat probably surmised it was the safest place to relieve themselves. Should have been congratulated not banished.

He has a very dapper hairline! Handsome boy.

levitator129020

Wait so I can understand maybe giving the cat some anxiety medicine or something to chill them out but how do you feed/water them during a flight or if they have to use the bathroom how do you manage that?

snapetom

In my experience in multiple cross-country trips, five or more cats every trip, I've realized that cats are just not thrilled with going to the bathroom in stressful, traveling situations. The first trip, we'd stop a couple of times in 10-12 hours of driving and realized no one used the litter boxes. They'd hold it in until the hotel, where we immediately laid out multiple litter boxes. With each stop taking 30 minutes with that many cats, we rationalized the time was better spent driving if they weren't using boxes. Most also wouldn't eat the kibble that was offered to them throughout each day of driving, but some of that might be because they got their usual wet food cans before heading out every day.

xAkumu

My 11 year old boy did a 26+ hour drive with us. We had to give him Gabapentin but we made it!!

IronRangeBabe

My condolences to moving to ND. We moved out of that terrible place 😝 All jokes aside, we did the same. Our cat was a born North Dakotan, moved with us to Wisconsin, Minnesota, and up to Calgary in Canada. Well travelled cat and happy her hoomans took her 💕. Edit: Did not know I could include photo of said native NDer, Miss Duchess of Minot 💕 https://preview.redd.it/qvknt23dwoha1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4079f2a6f104c6c2f87f348b6328734d36099481

FitDifference

Just curious about the practicality of flying with your cat. Doesn’t it shit or pee like halfway through the flight?

[deleted]

Cats don't evacuate during travel. It'll hold its own until it feels safe enough to let go.

kuangstaaa

My cat barely peed during my 15 hr car ride with her. We kept her in a dog-sized kennel with a small litter tray during the drive. Cats won't go to the bathroom when very stressed.

FluffleMyRuffles

She'll also need some time to adjust to the new place, but will go much faster since her pooper scooper is coming with her.

cheesecakecaramel

Yes, it’s me ! I’m the pooper scooper !

LxTRex

Idk why, but I'm just in love with the eagerness in which you identify responsible for your cat, even if the title is "pooper scooper"

MazterpeezeOvAzz

I agree with this 100%. It can be very risky putting them in the cargo area of the planes/trusting airline workers handling them and personally I would not feel comfortable doing that. Maybe that's what people are refering to. So getting them in the passenger area with you would be ideal.

MonkeyMagic1968

Precisely. Had acquaintances working for airlines who were traumatized by the number of pets who did not make it. Imagine how much worse their human companions felt. Jaysus. Cabin, please, if possible!

snubdeity

> Cabin, please, if possible! No, not "cabin, if possible" "Cabin, or find another way to travel with your pet" I'd sooner fork over the money to sail across the atlantic than put my kitty in cargo. The rates of pets dying/going missing in cargo is abysmal.

HazelTheWriter

We had to move to the UK due to military orders. Because you cannot fly pets in cabin to the UK, we had my brother fly with our cat to Amsterdam with the cat in cabin and then take a ferry to the UK. 100% worth the extra money and especially with cats I would agree- get them in cabin whatever you have to do.

LucyLuPop

100% - however many airlines now will let you take pets that are small enough to fit in a carrier in the main cabin with you. We moved to CA from Europe 13 years ago with our girl and did exactly that. Honestly - she slept for 90% of the 11hr flight and was more rested when we arrived than we were 🤣 oh - the abuse!!! 🤣🤣🤣

TediousStranger

my cat hates leaving the house, for any reason. so my vet gave me meds to drug her for our 12hr drive moving from US to Canada. she handled it like a champ. very little whining, just chilled in her carrier in the passenger seat next to me. I don't think she slept but she was incredibly serene.

diex626

My main concern tho is what will she do when all the other cats meow in an another language? Le woof.....

cheesecakecaramel

Yeah, she’s French she doesn’t know how to speak English :( She likes meowlette du fromage tho

Kersenn

English speaking cats love a French accent so she'll make friends pretty easy

Moxiemin

Immersion is supposed to be the easiest way to learn, she should adapt quickly to le meow.

i-hate-pumpkin-spice

Agree 💯with this! 15 hours vs having her life turned upside down? There’s no question!

nerdforest

15 hours versus a lifetime…. I think 15 hours will be ok. These things happen, people move and it’s normal. Also rehoming an animal isn’t always the right decision. The cat we have right now was adopted as an adult and is so skittish. I’ve no idea what happened to her before, but she will give you a “cat bite” when you’ve pet her too much or if you go to pet her too quickly. I wonder what her condition was before, but she’s in a house now where she is loved and it’s mostly on her terms haha.

EasterBunnyArt

Exactly this. I am slowly debating on moving back to Europe and I am taking my cats with me. No way after 6 years I will abandon them.

ColdIceMelt

People will tell you that you are not doing the right thing, but that is false. I have rescued cats that were left behind, and they never recovered. They had short lives and had a hard time bonding with people. It would help if you considered your bond with the cat. Is it truly a part of the family or a cool pet to pay attention to every so often? (Don’t answer that here.) If your cat is genuinely part of your life, take it with you. Research the hell out of pet travel, and not on Reddit! I’ve traveled with cats, and they are as resilient, if not more, than humans. Research, research! Oh, and a side note. It can take more time for the cat to adapt to your new home, so prep for that. Good luck. To recap: Your bond will make it all work out if you have a strong one.

paperthinpatience

Yes! I work at a shelter and animals whose owners leave them behind literally mourn or look for their owners constantly. It’s heartbreaking. If you can keep your baby, do everything you can to keep it.

RunaroundX

Reading this made me sad

Cats-and-dogs-rdabst

milkradio

People really take the jokes about how “cats don’t care” way too seriously because of course cats like their owners (usually lol) and absolutely have feelings. Our cat pouted for 8 hours after we picked him up from being boarded when we went to the cottage for 10 days one year, but then when he was done ignoring us, he went back to cuddling with my dad and following him around everywhere.

Loan-Pickle

I once went out of the country for 3 weeks. My sister said my cat would just walk around the house meowing, looking for me. Like he would go in my room and look around, then go in my office and look around, then go to my chair. All the places I’d normally be. When I came home he didn’t leave my side for a week. He legit thought I got out of the house and got lost. Which is funny because I worry about that happening to him.

fullmetalfeminist

My dad died suddenly and his cat, a majestic Norwegian forest cat, would go around the house meowing for him, the same way your cat did. My family is very close with our next door neighbours, so he started going over there and sitting outside their door meowing in a very demanding tone (you know the one) because he thought my dad might be in there 😭

Loan-Pickle

I’m sorry to hear about your dad. This is one of my worries. Something happens to me and my cats won’t understand why I’m not there anymore. Though if something did happen to me, they’d go to live with my sister. They know her as she used to live with me. So at least they’d get to stay with someone they know.

Marius500000

It's important to show the cats his remains so they understand. I've read this somewhere and it really stuck with me; it helps them deal.

tellmeaboutyourcat

My old man was left behind when his original people moved away. He was found in their old apartment, abandoned. He has been with me now for almost 15 years, but he's always had attachment issues and separation anxiety. It's so sad. 😭

Myamaranth

Listen i'm sure people have a valid reason for having to rehome their cat but goddamn if it doesnt make me mad as hell reading this. My cats are everything to me

CassetteMeower

My cat Divina belonged to other owners who were moving to India and they thought the flight would be very stressful for her since it’s so long and also how she’d have to be in quarantine for a while to make sure she wouldn’t spread any illnesses to India. They didn’t know if they should rehome her or bring her to a shelter since they didn’t want to put that much stress on her, and they were looking for a sign on if they should bring her with them or if they should rehome her. Mom had posted on a local forum thing about how she was looking for another cat who was very friendly and fluffy and had a loud purr and preferably a female (basically the same traits as my cat who had passed away a few months prior) and they said that was a sign and they found the perfect owners for her. Divina fell in love with us as soon as we first met, and she very quickly took to her new family and she LOVES our dogs. Her owners were so happy to see she was in a great new home and they gave us ALL of her cat supplies. It’s been 3+ years and she just LOVES her new home, I almost think she likes us more than her previous owners? I’m pretty sure she still misses them but she’s definitely happy here. She was just cuddling with me earlier as I was playing Splatoon on my Switch. She’s a very good girl and I’m glad she has us as a family. https://preview.redd.it/c8qb8vhbymha1.jpeg?width=3264&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2fd43756218a9d85628c2a5f242efbbb360319c2 While rehoming when moving away works well for some cats (like in Divina’s case) other times it’s best to bring the kitty with you. Divina is definitely very happy in her new home though, I’m glad that we’re taking care of her now. She’s so affectionate, just LOOKING at her will make her purr!

ScrotieMcP

We have a pound puppy who can never get enough love and gets upset when left behind. After 3 years he's just starting to realize that he's in his new forever home, but I can tell he's still mourning someone. I think maybe his human died on him, for 2 years he had to be in the bathroom when I took a shower. Nowadays he just comes to check on me once or twice and let all the warm air out. He's a good boy. I tell him that a lot.

Aware_Past

For winter break, I had to travel back to my home state. Sadly, I can’t bring my cat back to where I was staying, but a friend offered to watch him. We travelled together on the train, and he stayed with friend for 2 weeks. He was very happy with friend and then when we came back home, he was back to his usual self right away! I would think that if the car already has very bad anxiety, then it would be bad.

ColdIceMelt

Naturally, a cat would be stressed when traveling, but humans do as well (this is why was have so many public freakout videos). It throws our routines off. It will be stressful. This speaks powerfully to the great environment and bond you have with your cat. Cats revert to normal when they have a good home and choose the right human. Well done!

saft999

I disagree with the cats recovering comment. We’ve fostered almost 100 animals in the last few years and cats do just fine. 100% it’s better for this person to keep their cat though. We’ve had several long term fosters 6+ months and they bond with us just fine and then do just fine in their new homes too. It takes a few weeks for them to get comfortable sometimes but they eventually do. We also took my dads 13 year old cat when he had to move out of his home. We’ve had him for 2 years now and it’s like he was born in our home and has been our cat for a decade just like our others.

lastyandcats

I just want to say a big thank you to fosters like you who are helping so many animals. Reading your comment that cats will adjust relatively ok also makes me feel better - I recently rescued a stray 6 month kitty off the streets who is the sweetest boy i have seen (can pet/pick up/even bathed him because he was so filthy from hidding under cars). I could not keep him because of a lot of personal reasons and allergies, so I found him a foster after taking him to the vet making sure he was healthy and vaccinated. The boy only stayed with me for about 1.5 weeks but he seemed to be very attached to me. I felt so guilty when I dropped him off to the foster and my brain keeps replaying how he looked at me with his frightened eyes when I left. But reading this here is making me feel a little better. Thank you.

bdblr

Back in 1998 we moved two senior cats from Sacramento to Hasselt, Belgium, and due to two unfortunate six hours delays our trip took a total of thirty hours. Cats ended up fine. Don't rehome - take your buddy along.

Impulsive2k22

I bought my 2 girls and my boy over from Ireland to England with me on the overnite ferry. They were all given sedatives and suffered no ill effect. There was no way I was leaving my furr-babies behind

freeradicalx

And as for airlines, a significant number of them do let you bring your cat into the cabin for a reasonable fee. That's what I did. I was worried about other passengers with allergies but it turns out that the air filtration in a plane cabin is world class. One of the folks sitting next to me said they actually did have a cat allergy but that he wasn't bothered by her sitting in her case at my feet.

[deleted]

I travelled with my cat who is the most scared and unfriendly cat. He literally will get scared if i walk fast or do something unusual. He was on a 15h trip each way including a 3-4 hours layover. He was scared during the flight but once we got to destination he adapted in couple of days. I would highly recommend you take the cat with you. Someone who is saying it’s a torture has no clue what they are talking about. In the wild, cats face danger continuously, it’s not like they never stress or whatever. I booked a special seat that had some room next to the window which allowed me to have him there instead of being under the seat during the whole flight. Do mot sedate him. Talk to your vet. They can fly. Please do not rehome him. Message me in private i can give you lots of tips that can make things easier for both you and the cat so you have an easier trip.

BrokilonDryad

What do you do about your cat peeing and pooping on the flight? I’ve always wondered.

BoDiddley_Squat

In my experience, a lot of cats just ... don't, when they're in a stressful situation. I did something like a 20-hour flight with my previous cat, and we had a long-ish layover. I surreptitiously took him into a family bathroom stall to let him walk around and pee if he needed to. Not interested. When I arrived at the final destination, my dad picked me up, and he had a box of litter prepared in the car. Still not interested. 1-hour drive from the airport. He managed not to go for a hugely long time, and wouldn't go until I had taken him to the new house, let him sniff around, and *then* he would go. Of course, all cats are different. My current handsome boy peed in the brand new carrier straight from the rescue place - 15 minute drive. Has done it again twice. Now I always keep a box of litter in the backseat and he won't use it lol. But at least he stopped pissing in the carrier.

We did a 13 hour move a few years ago and the boys had no interest in any of the 4 bathroom breaks we tried to give them. As soon as we pulled into the parking spot at the motel we were staying at for the night, the eldest shat in his carrier, threw up on the poo and then hissed at the mess until we could get him out. Poor guy

Numerous_Witness_345

Man I could relate. "Guys! I shit my house!"

absentbusiness

I have a cat who poops in the carrier. You can get a large carrier and fit a kitten sized litter box in the back. Sometimes his little butt hangs over the edge and I have a mess to clean up. But usually he gets it all in the box.

sweetEVILone

You can’t take carriers that big on a flight in the cabin.

ushouldgetacat

My cat peed in his carrier in my car twice in a row. It was unusual for him so I wiped my car interior very thoroughly and washed the crap out of his carrier. He doesn’t pee in the carrier anymore. I might be wrong but I read somewhere that cats can smell anxiety from when they peed previously and repeat the behavior.

sikolio

We bought diapers for our cat, we tried like 3 different ones and she travels really easily now.

fifthecho

Helped a friend with an 18 hour international cat relocation last year. The consensus with the agencies we worked with was to put a pee pad for a small dog in the carrier, but to focus more on having a box on the other side as the cat likely wouldn’t pee or poop during the trip. When he finally arrived in his new home, he was pretty eager to use the box, but did nothing in the carrier.

Icy-Addendum4930

If they have been given a chance to go beforehand, they can hold it. They’ll probably be too stressed to drink/eat during travel so it shouldn’t be urgent.

WaterLily6984

They won't pee or poop especially if you make sure they've done it before the flight, though... True story: I was moving and could take my cat in the cabin with me. I trained her to wear a harness so that I could hold on to her when I had to take her out for the carrier to go through the X-ray. Then the TSA officer decided to do an explosive check on my hands WHILE I'm holding a terrified cat. My cat used to turn into a possum in scary situations and just play dead, but she peed all over my sweater 😐 Then on the flight I kept the carrier on my lap and I'm covered in cat pee. I apologized to the lady next to me and she's went "Oh, honey, don't worry. I own a chicken farm" 😂 My cat was very calm on the flight and was with us for 10 more years and moved 2 more times. In a cabin situation, I really recommend asking the TSA for screening in a private room, which they offer for scared pets. If in the US, I don't know about other countries.😊

all_hail-the_moose

If you don’t fly directly with your pet (cat or dog) and they go in the plane, well if they have an accident, then they are stuck sitting in it until the end of their journey The place I used work at would sometimes pick up pets flying United from the airport (those with long layovers) Puppies being sent to their owners, military pets either leaving or returning to the US. Often these animals were petrified and covered in their own shit/piss or both. We would bathe them if we could, but sometimes we had to leave them like that. If you have to fly, keep your animal with you or find another way to transport them.

RealGunRunner808

You can bring lightly scented wipes on board with you. As well you can politely ask the steward person if it okay to bring the carrier into the bathroom with you (most of the time you'll get a yes, because airlines recognize your pets as a family member. That's why they have their own personal tickets when you bring them in the cabin. As well nobody wants to smell cat shit the entire time 🤣).

BasicallyBasix

I think for longer flights most people give their pets a light sedative, so they’ll just relax/sleep through the flight

BrokilonDryad

I mean 15h seems like a pretty long flight, I know I’d have to pee at least once lol. And what about food and water?

BasicallyBasix

Yeah I’d agree, but a healthy house cat sleeps 16-18 hrs a day. So, I don’t think they’re really all that bothered by sleeping for 15 hrs straight

nemmalie

Coming from someone who works at a cat clinic, some cats become superhuman (supercat?) in their ability to not pee or poop when they’re under stress (like they would be on a flight). They typically wouldn’t want to eat or drink in those situations either.

tellmeaboutyourcat

I too become superhuman in my ability to not use the bathroom on long flights. Stress can do that, absolutely.

PurpleHymn

This is true. My cat travels with me a couple of times per year, as I spend a few months abroad, and he doesn’t pee or poop inside the carrier. He prefers not to eat, too. Once we arrive to our destination, things tend to go back to normal pretty quickly.

ReaMacTN

Don’t sedate him? Why not? I mean knocked tf out obviously not lol, but why not use vet-prescribed sedative meds?

TediousStranger

there is nothing wrong with using vet-prescribed sedatives. honestly, if you don't have a particularly adventurous animal, a little kitty Xanax is probably the more kind thing to do for them. gabapentin is usually prescribed (I believe) and at least in my case, didn't knock my cat out at all, she seemed pretty alert during our 12h drive but no whining, crying, or freaking out. she did have a bit of a fit around the 6hr mark, broke my heart, so we stopped off and I gave her some more meds.

MsBlondeViking

It’s more mean to have the “oh just rehome her instead” mentality. Have a safe flight, BOTH of you 😊

ZealousidealEmu4

I haven’t experienced this with my cats myself but I would think that a one time flight and move with their owner would be better than the long term distress and suffering caused of rehoming your cat.

cheesecakecaramel

Whether I take her with me or not, she’s gonna be stressed. But like you said, this is one time flight. I’ll be giving her gabapentine to make it easier

RealGunRunner808

Keep your cat under your seat during the flight. As well, put a previously worn shirt in the kennel with your cat, as the smell of you will reduce stress. When your airborne it's okay to take the collapsible kennel (no, it does not collapse on your cat for those that don't know) out from underneath your seat and set it in your lap, for a little bit to let your kitty see you, smile, slow blink, all that jazz. If you are going to give your kitty loves, open the top slowly, with your other hand very close by, and only enough to fit your one hand in. Source: I have done it 😁

999cranberries

Is she going to be in the cabin with you? I've heard that it's not recommended to medicate if your pet is flying cargo because there's no one there to monitor them.

Dismal_Pie_71

According to my vet Gabapentin is safe for flying because it is an anti-anxiety medication not a sedative. You should never sedate or tranquillize a cat to fly because that is definitely not safe. Oh and seconding the recommendation for having kitty in the cabin with you under the seat! That is a million times safer than having you kitty buddy traveling in the cargo hold.

AwareBumblebee4596

Just to add to that, and I hope the OP sees all this; it's a good idea to do a triall run with the medication before you go on the trip. So you see how the cat reacts to the medication in a normal setting (chilled out/zombie), and in the extremely unusual case, they have a bad reaction you have access to a vet.

ZealousidealEmu4

Totally agree. And I think it would be easier to experience this stressful situation with her person rather than strangers.

[deleted]

My chonkers was abandoned by several owners because he had some behavioral issues and I gotta agree, I think it scarred him emotionally. It took me years to get to the point where he would trust me. Think of it this way maybe. If my chonkers got out for a day and was stuck in a tree and even scared half to death would that be worse than him being left by someone he was bonded to? I know the flight will be stressful but that's temporary. Gone is forever. Whoever these people are tell them to floof off. Good luck to you both.

kensie_7

I have never had your situation to deal with. I do know this, my cat is my family and if I move she goes with me. It is not abuse for you to take her with you. Please do not listen to the naysayers. Wishing you both a safe journey to your new home.

California_ocean

Don't re-home the cat. So long as the cat is with you all will be well. Never leave your companion behind.

[deleted]

I know exactly how you feel. A few months ago I relocated with my two cats (male 7ys, female 9 years). I was terrified of moving my cats abroad and I refused to consider sending them with the luggage. It required three flights: 2 hours + 2hr stopover 12 hours + 8 hour layover 3 hour flight. From the moment we stepped out of my old apartment into the new one was about 32 hours (had to arrive earlier than 3 hours for international flight to do the paperwork ro clear the cats' for export and then do the clearance/inspection in the final destination). In all three flights they were under the seats, they barely made any noises, some meowing every now and then especially if I peeked under the cover to check how they were doing. Other than that, barely no one noticed there were cats there. On the 8 hour layover I was prepared with a [portable litterbox](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.amazon.com/petisfam-Portable-Travel-Litter-Collapsible/dp/B08HS73BX7&ved=2ahUKEwjO2_zAkY79AhVDSvEDHSIwAV8QFnoECBoQAQ&usg=AOvVaw2VRcaJquu9ASoFuJd2dHjT) and a [portable playpen](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.amazon.co.uk/Portable-Pet-Playpen/s%3Fk%3DPortable%2BPet%2BPlaypen&ved=2ahUKEwiRh9HckY79AhVMSvEDHYzWBosQFnoECA0QAQ&usg=AOvVaw1uE8tFRsgWkwTQHp9x4V0E). I did not medicate them on any way. I did leave the pet carriers several days before so they got used to getting inside by themselves and ripped a pair of jeans and have each a leg as cover for the floor of the carrier. The last solid meal was 6 hours before the flight. I was prepared with a special nutrition gel for cats but they were not thrilled about it so they ignored it. Found a space in the airport away from everyone as much as possible and set up a camp with the playpen and covered it with blankets. Inside I out the portable litter box. They did not use the litterbox. One cat did eat a pouch of wet food and drink water, the female refused everything but were able to stretch their legs a bit from the carriers. I hope I never have to put them through that again. And although it was super exhausting and I was very stressed for them, they really were champs. I think they are extremely more resilient than we give them credit for. So prepare yourself (I had a bag with wet towels, silica litter, plastic bags, toilet paper, food pouches and portable water plates) and I am absolutely sure the best decision is to bring your cat with you. A few hours of discomfort are way better than your cat separated from you. [cat tax - relocation time!](https://imgur.com/a/8OpSju2)

TheMapaTofu

They will undoubtedly be stressed but rehoming them / putting them back in the shelter is way worse for them My cat was on a 4 hour trip and was absolutely terrified and it took her a little while to adjust to her new home but now, 4 years later she’s as happy as she can be and I don’t regret taking her with me

AloneCan9661

Would you leave your child behind? Those people are idiots. She’s your family.

Calm-Pause3527

Absolutely not. Those people are wrong and just plain stupid to think that. When I was a kid, my mom moved us to Australia. While there, we got a beautiful golden retriever who loved us and who we loved. He was so attached to my mom that we usually joked that he thought she gave birth to him too. Two years after getting that dog, it was time to move back home to America. The flight from Australia to America is BRUTALLY long- and we did non stop to minimize stress for our pup. A few close family friends offered to take the dog, including friends that had dogs and our GR knew VERY well. Never even occurred to my mom to leave him behind. Fifteen to seventeen hours of travel later, we arrive in LAX and can get to our pup. We were met with the saddest sight we had ever seen. This beautiful, two and a half year old Golden was curled into the tightest, saddest ball, with his tail over his nose. He was a dog who looked like he was ready to give up on life. My mom called his name and his head shot up, he saw us, his family, and we saw the happy young pup we knew and loved in an instant. He lived very happily for thirteen more odd years and passed away in his sleep. After seeing him the way he was for that moment in the crate, I think he'd have died of a broken heart had we left him in Australia. Moral of the story? If you can- don't leave your babies behind. Cat or dog, they're our family and we are their literal world. I guarantee you that your baby will be happier (maybe not without side effects- joked our GR had PTSD since he started barking at planes that flew too low overhead) with you than they ever will be with a stranger.

theracereviewer

We moved from Europe to the United States 12 years ago. We brought our two cats, they were in the cargo hold together in a large bench. All taken care of by a company specializing in it. Were they scared? Undoubtedly. Were they pissed off? Absolutely. But once we were settled, it was like nothing had changed. They just wanted to be with us and they lived out their lives while being loved by those that raised them. Unfortunately they have both passed away now, but I would bring them abroad again in a heartbeat.

kensie_7

I have never had your situation to deal with. I do know this, my cat is my family and if I move she goes with me. It is not abuse for you to take her with you. Please do not listen to the naysayers. Wishing you both a safe journey to your new home.

LSends2020

I’ve moved countries with my cat and it was stressful, but fine and I wouldn’t have done it any other way. She’s family to me and leaving her never even crossed my mind. It was an 8 hour flight with a layover and I was able to keep her under my seat. Talk to your vet about a mild sedative if you’re concerned about anxiety. I didn’t sedate her, but I know people do. I would 100% vote for you to take your cat.

Quantumercifier

Are F!@#&$! kidding??!!! Even if, and lets assume it is, that you rehome in a super loving home, cat people themselves, not unlike me, that is not something you can do. I moved to Vietnam in end of 2018 AD and have not been back once to the motherland where my 2 cats and dog are with my ex-wife. We are both the parents so she is a great loving parent. Every night I have to imagine cuddling with them to go to sleep and when I wake up. Oh I wanted a cat, preferably two, to snuggle with and complete my fairly lonely life in Saigon. I was recently laid off so I miss the human connection. But I refrain from getting once because I will head back home sooner or later. I had a really beautiful girl friend who runs two cosmetic shops with substantial food items. She adopted this beautiful black kitten. I would come to her shop after work every night and just play and cuddle him. When I am not there, he is usually tied up. At night he is all by himself when they closed up shop. The GF asked me sarcastically, do you love the cat more then me? :-) I can lie, trust me I can, but a lie that BIG, I simply cannot do. I said YES, I love the cat more. And I said I love the cat more then me, and I love me! That is just the way I am. TLDR: BRING THE CAT HOME WITH YOU!

uNameorsomething

15 hours out of a lifetime? Your cat will forgive you. Your cat won’t forgive you if you leave it…

California_ocean

Don't rehome the cat. So long as the cat is with you all will be well. Never leave your companion behind.

CluelessDinosaur

She'll be absolutely fine. Those people are idiots. She may get stressed but she won't suffer. Tips: Get some gabapentin from the vet to help sedate her so she sleeps/relaxes for the flight. Get some feliway spray to spray on her blankets about 15 minutes before you put her in the carrier. Keep her carrier covered with a feliway blanket at all times. Have peepads to change out in her box just in case. When TSA wants to search her carrier, ask for a private room. Cats get lost in the airport all the time. When you reach your destination, set up a small, dark, out of the way spot for her such as a closet that includes her carrier, food, water, and a litter box. Let her stay there to decompress and stay out of the hustle and bustle. Get established at a vet in the new place as soon as you can and find where the emergency vets are ETA: If you haven't already, get a health certificate and get her up to date on rabies and fvrcp vaccines.

Scoobert409

I don't think I could abandon that cute face. Kitty must fly

OkAd2320

She'll make it through OP and it'll be happily ever after once you're all moved.

I know people who have moved their pets across continents or rescued them from abroad and brought them home. There is always a chance something can go wrong but we have to try to plan for the best outcomes sometimes. (Airline losing pet, pet not traveling well, medicine going wrong).

Bring her in the cabin with lots of treats like I did when I took a four and a half hour flight... My 10-year-old cat didn't even yell once, no medication. I was more anxious than she was
