I guess it depends on how you qualify the earth being fine. Is Venus fine? Planets change over geological time scales and don't have any opinions about what state is actually better, so there isn't actually anyway way to qualify a planet as being "fine" unless you have some kind of criteria. Is anything other than smashed into millions of pieces "fine"?
As unwarranted as it may be, if I have any optimism about the situation, it's because nature has generally bounced back after every major ecological disaster. In the absence of human intervention, trees and wildlife returned to the site of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and that area is still contaminated with radiation.
That being said, Chernobyl went into a meltdown almost 40 years ago, so the timeline is pretty long.
The carbon cycle is quite lengthy. Uptake back into the earth is on geological time scales, ~75 million years.
So, in essence, many of the effects will be very long-lasting.
Here's a neat visual to illustrate:

I swear these stupid jokes in the face of planetary extinction are really starting to piss me off. But then again what do I expect? Hopeful news in the comments? Hah!
I’m always brought back to that one scene in Dante’s Peak where Pierce Brosnan’s character explains:
if you put a frog in boiling hot water, it would jump out. But put it in cold water, and heat it up gradually, it would slowly boil to death.
Good movie
EDIT: The analogy underscores (to me) the real crisis isn’t the impending dangers, but society’s lack of response to them.
I'm not familiar with the science of the "transition state" or the point of no return in terms of climate change but from a total layman's observation when covid shut down global capitalism briefly, wildlife in general flourished almost immediately. My suspicion is that if we stop behaving like insane suicidal psychopathic cannibal rapist monkeys working as hard as we can with all our combined might to induce climate change.... that there is a good chance it will balance out
The [COVID lockdowns of 2020 temporarily lowered our rate of CO2 emissions](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-18922-7/figures/1). Humanity was still a net CO2 gas emitter during that time, so we made things worse, but did so more a bit more slowly. That's why a [graph of CO2 concentrations](https://keelingcurve.ucsd.edu/) shows a continued rise.
[Stabilizing the climate means getting human greenhouse gas emissions to approximately zero](https://www.carbonbrief.org/explainer-will-global-warming-stop-as-soon-as-net-zero-emissions-are-reached). We didn't come anywhere near that during the lockdowns.

Good to see empirical numbers. If we just stop being complete a holes running off a cliff we can walk off a cliff - a low bar. I still see a lot of hope in stopping our current behavior- starting with measurables like CO² emissions and doing the next rational thing after that.
Funny story the mass murder caused as a result of Genghis Khan's conquests had a similar result.

Genuine question. If certain governments have come together to say they are going to fight climate change, why aren’t they black balling the countries (refusing trade for example) who aren’t on board? Is it because we depend too much on imports from other countries?
Let's use the example of the US. Many US goods are manufactured in China. This isn't attributed to the US, it is blamed on China.
If for instance the US stopped trading with China, it would need to get those goods from somewhere, and that somewhere in turn would produce a significant amount of GHG.
The US shipping out so much of its manufacturing is part of the reason we don't contribute so much anymore. That and we don't count the US military emissions.
I checked it after reading your comment... you are 100% right... nobody saw and nobody cares.... I say we burn all the oil just to see what happens (/s)
It really something though that certain death is coming to millions probably billions of people and there is not a single person or group of people with the power and will to stop it.
As a lifelong asthmatic I’m literally starting to suffocate outdoors now. We’re going to also see record-breaking deaths of people with respiratory diseases soon.
Human civilization is so screwed. The next 100 years are going to be real bad.
Our collective failure to address this crisis will reduce the overall carrying capacity for life on this planet. One way or another, human population will reduce — likely through war (over resources) and famine.
Don’t have kids. It is an act of cruelty.
I wrote out an entire thing about how stupid they are and the nicest things I could say would probably get me banned from reddit for life.... so I'll just leave this comment here instead

The earth will be fine. The people on it, however, are screwed.

That’s such a cool take. Thanks man!

Yeah, hard to destroy rocks
I just wish we would kill our own species off without killing others with us
It's OK. Ron Deathsantis says climate change is illegal, and the weather wouldn't dare break the law.
If you’re going to go that far you might as well go all the way to deathsentence
Ron "Climate Change is too woke something book bans something I wear dainty boots something something" DeathSentence it is!
Can we get him for emperor of the earth? Because his current powers are limited to Florida and that's not a large enough place to help the planet.
It's cool. I encourage people sympathetic to that idea to move to FL.
Literally the opposite of cool lol.
Ah ah! Earth hit with 12 straight months of record breaking temperatures so far!*
In a few years we will call those Rookie numbers.
It goes with the record petro profits.
“remember the cold days of 2024?”
I swear these stupid jokes in the face of planetary extinction are really starting to piss me off. But then again what do I expect? Hopeful news in the comments? Hah!
Yes lets be hopeful while we slowly kill ourselves, so we dont have to stop killing ourselves.
That’s nihilism for you. Might as well play a tune while the ship sinks.
it'll be warmer next year. and the next year. and the next year. maybe we should ask Venus at what point global warming ends....
![gif](giphy|YA6dmVW0gfIw8|downsized) If we keep our eyes closed like we've been doing it can't hurt us…
Let's get on geothermal cooling I think ancient building practices in hot climates should be the norm.
Smart man.
Been talking about this 10 years ago. Happy to see someone else mentioning it.
Its no longer climate change Its *climate changed*
Been like that for a while brother

That analogy is built on an experiment about a frog without a brain being heated. It was an experiment by Friedeich Goltz trying to find the soul.
One can guess from the type of experiments he designed, he was able to conclude that he didn't have one at least.
Good context
So are we saying that society doesn’t have a soul here or what?
What I was pointing at was: How people treat a problem can be worse than the problem itself.
Oh yes. Such a great movie, never heard that frog thing until I saw it. /s
Give a man a fish, he wants for more, teach a man philosophy and he can scam young people out of money to feed himself. Frogs legs are better fried.
We need to stop pushing that it's going to be hotter next year, and remind people this is the coldest summer of the rest of your life.
We really are living in the good ol' days.
Ok. Let's go ride bikes!
Pass on over that half full glass of sunshine and roses my friend! 😃
unfortunately the summer where I'm at is a solid 10⁰C colder than usual so I'm not even getting the upside to go with my impending doom
That's a bummer, Earth is where I live.
Ah hell, me too!!! 😫
I see what you did there
Just move
Same. What part?

Gruesome
"Earth hit". As if it is an accident.
No one saw it coming. I swear! 🥵
Blindsided
Welp :(

Right. Humans need to stop consuming so much, which is never going to happen.
> and we don't count the US military emissions. Wait, what? Seriously? That alone must be a huge number...
Which is exactly why it's never counted.
Farting in this weather is like having a fusion reaction going off between your cheeks. Bring on the Ice Age now.

Totally sustainable. Nothing to see here, carry on now.
I went to YouTube to see a few videos on the story and most had 3k views or less. No one cares, we are screwed.

Yes, they scrape YouTube comments for Sentimental Analysis for a reason. It’s a proxy for how the world thinks.
24 months incoming followed by 36, then 48, then 60... This is the hottest year in record........ So far. Until next year
"bUt We'Ve HaD wArM WiNtEr DaYs BeFoRe!!!1"
We went extinct due to climate change, but at least we didn’t police people’s, politicians, and corporation’s ability to spread lies about it.
I don't care about the extinction, I care about the suffering.
Suffering in what sense?
O thing to do with global warming… there is even a state in the US that took it out from the law
Great News! Let's make it 13. /s
We did it guys! New records all around! Hive five? Anyone?

Just crank that aircon lower and break them records higher next year.

"Nothing to see here, move along"
Yeah but...record profits. Rich people apparently don't live on earth as they're willing to set it aflame for more money.

We're like the dodo bird in Alice is Wonderland. "I never ever ever do a thing about the weather because the weather never ever does a thing for me!"
This is fine
Sometimes, it feels like it'd be easier to list which months in the last decade *didn't* break heat records.
“Hit with” interesting choice of worlds It’s not a spontaneous thing.
Death spiral happening fast. Gonna have a beer.
Stop this nonsense. Climate change isn't real. Go away /s

Water Wars!!! (Coming soon)
Don’t think of it as the warmest on record, think of it as the coolest it will be for the next century.
Cloud seeding?
Cloud seeding won’t solve long term anything it would create more chaos in weather. Imagine politicians deciding how weather should be everywhere.
I’ll go down in a couple of years.
