Price ranges from $2000-$3000 depending on grade; melt value alone is $1900. Give your grandfather a proper size capsule!

shgsehsrvsef

This is extremely valuable. A simple google search will tell you it’s worth around 2k in average condition.

mtcastell101

Why do a google search when a much longer reddit post will do?

Icy_Blackberry_3759

So that I can see it on a coins subreddit lol

XeniaDweller

It feels better asking real people.

CuriousMindedin2022

I search and search and get too many different answers.

WaldenFont

Google searches don't give karma 🤷‍♂️

oboshoe

Google simply provides links to threads like this.

[deleted]

At best.

[deleted]

Because most people these days are computer illiterate if it takes more than the 30 seconds to make a post about it. No one WANTS to do the search because they might have to work at it if the first hit isn’t the answer.

[deleted]

Google is not always the best place. You post here in Reddit you might find a collector who has been desperately searching for that coin to finish off a series or something and offer you a huge fortune to get it. So posting here could make you rich.

BadBehaver

What coins you lookin for 👀

gthrees

I don’t think that happens

[deleted]

Google sucks. You would probably get ads to purchase one before you saw it’s value. Then it might be wrong. Or an ad

808morgan

Like what is this car, but it says the brand right on the car and a little search would do!

Deeznutz1818

Yeah, you could search Google and get the exact opposite answers for the same question….

Ok-Confection5670

Good God look at that shine. I'd have that one slabbed without questions

RobCali509

Please get it out of that flip and into a proper holder.

muttons_1337

Question: why?

RobCali509

It looks like the older soft flip that leaves residue. I copied some information about them. "PVC damage on coins results from improperly storing coins in soft plastic flips or other plastic coin holders containing PVC. The PVC chemical in the flips interacts with the coin's metal, creating a slightly acidic reaction, which causes residual deposits to appear on the coin's surface " If it's the newer Mylar flip you're good but it certainly looks like the older soft type. Those are not good for coins long term.

muttons_1337

How could you be able to tell the difference, say if I was at a store and had a new and an old one side by side?

RobCali509

Mylar is harder materiel, the PVC feels like closer to a soft plastic rubbery feel. I would go to a coin shop and ask for a Mylar flip or the hard two piece coin holder. Edit: It’s nothing to immediately panic over, I would get a better flip or holder as soon as you get the opportunity. You can also order Mylar flips on Amazon.

wesw02

That was my first thought as well. Great explanation.

ThanklessWaterHeater

Just to be clear, that’s a double Eagle not a dollar. And, yeah, hoo boy, that’s a valuable coin.

Madness_051

Not a golden dollar. A $20 gold coin aka double eagle. Nearly 1 troy oz of gold.

Robertbnyc

I hear those plastics will mess the coin up over time and make it turn green due to a chemical reaction. You should always put them in hard plastic.

Ansrallah

it was decades ago there was some formulations of pvc which after some time had a reaction and sometimes seemed to melt and stick to coins however throughout the coin collecting numismatics industry this issue has since been long ago resolved with appropriately formulated materials.

Personal_Occasion618

Is that the case with gold coins aswell?

thazmaniandevil

It shouldn't be with real gold coins. Gold is a non-reactive metal. That's why gold still shines in 400 year old shipwrecks

Ansrallah

bear in mind that Chlorine will attack gold and form Gold Chloride AuCl, Wearing gold jewelry in a heavily chlorinated swimming pool will over time show a more dulled surface resulting from Chlorine pitting into the surface. PVC the C stands for chloride,

RobCali509

There's still small amounts of copper and silver mixed with the gold that will react if I'm not mistaken. I wouldn't chance it with a coin this nice.

erkevin

BUT, double eagles are 10% copper (which is highly reactive to PVC), so I wouldnt take a chance.

JACKTATTOONYC

Try not to sell it. He prob held onto it for decades for a reason

Mr-BananaHead

This is a $20 coin, known asa “double eagle” (this is because gold $10 coins are known as “eagles”). This variety was minted in the years 1877-1907. It is composed of 90% gold and 10% copper. This one is in reasonably good shape, especially on the reverse of the coin. While the scratches are major detractors in value, much of the fine detail is still remaining, so I’d put it in VF (very fine) condition at minimum, though it would take someone better at this than me and probably better pictures to get a more accurate grading. Assuming it’s in VF condition, this coin is worth about $2,150, though you very likely wouldn’t be able to get market value out of it if you were to sell it. Your absolute ceiling for value would be an AU (about uncirculated) grading, which would put it at about $2,250, though it is probably a lower grade than this due to the scratches.

[deleted]

Thank you for explaining the double eagle term. I always wondered why it was called that, but only in passing, not enough to look it up, lol. I thought I was just missing something! Thanks!

ghsgjgfngngf

Why do you guy give this guy shit for asking for expert opinions? You don't do it when people ask for ID help for modern coins, in which case it would be perfectly valid to point out they could have just typed the words on the coin into Google. Here it's easy to find out what it's supposed to be but not so easy to tell whehther it's genuine, what condition it's in and if it may for some reason be special, for someone who doesn't know about coins.

lost-little-boy

It makes us feel manly

[deleted]

The reverse of these pre-1900s gold coins scream "I AM A BIG FAT GOLD COIN" to me. It's the elaborate eagle for sure.

AnusLeary41

Yes it’s valuable. It’s a $20 dollar gold piece.

Gwsb1

Fuck yes its valuable. And it's not a "gold dollar" . It's a gold "twenty dollars".

cooscoos89898

Satire💀

TCUOilMan

Judging by the wear in liberties hair, I’d say this is high AU. It’s not a particularly rare date, but it’s worth at least $2,000. Could get a tad higher, but with gold where it currently is, that would be a fare price

Resident_Garage6084

Put it on FB marketplace and get 100 offers of $10 for it.

_Marat

Come on man, it has a face value of $20! Take no less than that.

ColdWaterBottle03

OneHallThatsAll

My dad has coins from Vietnam and desert storm. Wonder if they'll be valuable one day ?

Awstuck

Worthless DM me for an address you can send it too 😊congratulations on the find though

Concious_Dragon

MS61

Then_Gas_6988

High au def not ms

Concious_Dragon

I would have to take a closer look, but my instinct tells me MS60-MS61. Grading is subjective remember that.

[deleted]

Orhers have mentioned this, so my comment will be redundant. Please put your coin in a proper capsule. The plastic it currently is in can potentially damage the coin in the long run. Beautiful coin, by the way.

MAJORMETAL84

You can look it up by searching "Double Eagle"

hugg3b3ar

Are you...did you just ask if gold is possibly valuable? Wat.

Mister_Time_Traveler

Just to be sure check this coin with local jewelry store Experts can smell 👃 gold without any oxide or special device

[deleted]

What a beauty, dang I just love American gold and silver (coins.) 👌👌

tittiesbutsoapy

Here let me take a look at it 🥸
