Same, and it really influenced my future taste quite a lot. My mind was blown when I learned Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick used to work on The Tick before they made my all-time favorite animated show, The Venture Bros.
Iirc, the Tick’s creator, Ben Edlund, actually wrote the only episode of Venture Bros not written by Jackson and Doc: Viva los Muertos! The episode with the murderous Scooby gang parody and Venturestein’s first appearance.
I've always liked the thought that they're connected. My head cannon is that The City is the Venture Bros version of Danny The Street. It's already implied in The Tick that The City is where the weirdest and most incompetent heroes all seem to converge, and the landscape around it is constantly changing.
Depends on what you count as "most adapted", e.g. Men in Black has had a load of films and a TV show but they're all in the same continuity, same with The Crow.
Found that I still have that computer game from back then, little worse for wear but can't bring myself to toss it. Just for display, the cover art, it's a classic! Love the series too.
The Maxx, it is inscrutable, at times meditative, always insane. It can be a hard watch at times but it’s worth it at least once. I have to be in a very particular mood for a rewatch.
The show was basically a translation from comic to screen. Almost all the dialogue was word-for-word from the comic.
I always wondered why there wasn't a season two until I read past issue 12, and I was all, "Oh: that's why."
That comic got fucking *WEIRD*!!!!
I admit I was never really into the show, but I had a Prototype action figure that was one of my favorite toys. He was my stand-in for every robot or super suit I needed (I usually “cast” my toys into roles for whatever I was playing; they were rarely who they were actually meant to be).
Man, I remember when The Mask and Ace Ventura crossed over. Once in his show and once in Ace's. If only they could've crossed over with the Dumb and Dumber cartoon lol
The HBO Spawn show is the best iteration of the character. I loved how the political corruption and Spawn's story blend together. I'd rather they finish the story of the show than doing the movie that's never going to come. Keith David is perfect as Spawn too.
But close second is The Tick hahaha so bummed when it didn't get renewed for a 4th season but I knew even then it was a different kind of humor SPOOOOOON
Spawn. That is of course unless I missed the part in any of the others where the protagonist yells at a blind dude asking if he's blind, to which the blind guy responds with something like "Well... Yeah. 🤷🏽♂️"
I literally died and Snapchated that to all of my friends without context who also died. I really wish I would've saved the video. I'm pretty sure it happens within the first 6 episodes or so.
I don't know who "the Maxxx" is, I've seen his picture around before, but I think I only just realized that white part of his head is his *chin*. I've always seen it as like, weird upper teeth with no lower jaw.
Nope those are his “teeth”. He’s supposed to be a bunny rabbit (long story). It’s on Paramount+ I believe and an amazing, if not super weird, story. The animators just adapted Sam Keith’s original artwork rather than recreating. The result is so good.
Edit: not on Paramount, but less than $20 on Prime/Apple TV
It's on Paramount+?! I've been watching an old bootleg I converted from PAL 20 years ago because you couldn't buy the series in the states.
Well then. Happy Father's day to me!
Also, for anyone who hasn't read it, the whole comic series is great and worth reading. The TV show only covers the first handful of issues.
The Tick. Fun to watch Edlin's artistic skill improve and grow with each issue. Also, Edlin didn't write and draw that many Tick comics, so you can read them all fairly quickly
My favorite was Paul the Samurai. But it's been years since I've read the comics, and I don't recall the Red Eye.
That being said, I just bought the Complete Edlund edition. So I'll be reading it again soon. Amazon had it for like $40 👍
The tick: "Lady Liberty shines as a beacon of hope, Arthur! Her unwavering resolve illuminates the path of justice for all who seek it. Onward, to defend her honor!"
The Tick, though I watched turtles more often, the tick appeals more to me and I feel like it had to have some influence on one of my all time fav shows The Venture Bros. I also loved She Hulk and i can see some tick and/or Venture bros influence in it.
Of these listed its TMNT, although The Mask and The Tick are phenomenal. That said Men in Black, Cyber Six, Big Guy and Rusty the boy robot are better.
The Tick (or Mask) for mornings with my cereal, Spawn with pizza and Mortal Kombat with the boys, and The Maxx for marathoning late at night and chatting about Multiverse/psychic magic stuff
As much as I loved '87 TMNT, and how it was such a staple to my childhood, I have to say the 2003 TMNT was better. Mainly because Peter Laird had creative control.
The Tick.
I'm about to write you a reality check! Or would you prefer the cold, hard cash of truth?
Same, and it really influenced my future taste quite a lot. My mind was blown when I learned Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick used to work on The Tick before they made my all-time favorite animated show, The Venture Bros.
Don’t think I knew that, but I’m in no way surprised. Venture Bros. is part of my DNA.
Iirc, the Tick’s creator, Ben Edlund, actually wrote the only episode of Venture Bros not written by Jackson and Doc: Viva los Muertos! The episode with the murderous Scooby gang parody and Venturestein’s first appearance.
Ben Edlund is so fucking underappreciated
Holy shit.
Sames. Was not expecting my mind to be blown this morning.
You recall correctly! Go Team Venture! ✌️
He also wrote two episodes of *Firefly*. ("Jaynestown" and "Trash")
Whoa. Very easy to believe given the overlap in themes of the shows. They could reasonably be set in the same universe.
I've always liked the thought that they're connected. My head cannon is that The City is the Venture Bros version of Danny The Street. It's already implied in The Tick that The City is where the weirdest and most incompetent heroes all seem to converge, and the landscape around it is constantly changing.
This morning I realized that Brock was the live-action Tick.
It's okay to play with dolls!
SPOON!
not in the face!
Little Wooden Boy!!
I still quote this today, especially the Evil Midnight Bomber (What Bombs at Midnight)
“So he says to me, he says ‘YOU WANNA BE BIG, DONTCHA?!’”
Aside from Ninja Turtles that has to be the most adapted independent comic
There's what, the Fox cartoon, the Patrick Warburton show, and the Peter Serafinowicz show
Three TV shows is pretty good for an independent comic.
Not complaining, just seeing if there's any I missed
Depends on what you count as "most adapted", e.g. Men in Black has had a load of films and a TV show but they're all in the same continuity, same with The Crow.
I hadn’t thought about it before, but definitely.
SPOOOOOON
The Midnight Bomber What Bombs at Midnight episode lives in my head rent free
Spawn is nuts
Was hooked on this when it came out on HBO in the 90s. Had it recorded on VHS in order. 🙂
It’s on HBO max rn and I’m superglued to the screen
That show was on a whole different level. It was better than the books even were.
You should add Men in Black and Cybersix to the list!
Also Savage Dragon!
Forgot about those!
MIB would be my favourite in that case.
Seconded.
Reading the MIB comics after watching the movies is such a strange experience.
And Fish Police
I LOVE Sam and Max, hilarious humor that never goes out of style.
Hit the Road is one of the best games ever made.
Found that I still have that computer game from back then, little worse for wear but can't bring myself to toss it. Just for display, the cover art, it's a classic! Love the series too.
The funniest and best piece of lgbt representation we’ve gotten in years trust
I've always thought there was just... something about them... 🏳️🌈
You never imagined it I promise
All these are amazing, but TMNT all day for me.
It was a fucking Golden Age, you almost can't go wrong on this list But TMNT was fucking *formative* for me
SPOOOON
The Maxx, it is inscrutable, at times meditative, always insane. It can be a hard watch at times but it’s worth it at least once. I have to be in a very particular mood for a rewatch.
I own the dvd and I have it on tape as well. One of the greatest animated shows I’ve ever seen
The show was basically a translation from comic to screen. Almost all the dialogue was word-for-word from the comic. I always wondered why there wasn't a season two until I read past issue 12, and I was all, "Oh: that's why." That comic got fucking *WEIRD*!!!!
Spawn, TMNT, The Tick, Bucky O’Hare, Earthworm Jim and I remember being quite fond of the Sonic comics too.
Earthworm Jim tends to get forgotten, it has that same zany energy The Tick has.. just a whole lotta dumb fun.
Was Earthworm Jim a comic? I always thought it was just the game.
That was my thought, too.
No love for *Ultraforce*?
I was scrolling this thread trying to remember the name of “that superhero show.” Thank you for giving me the answer.
I loved [the Ultraverse](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultraverse) when I was a kid.
I admit I was never really into the show, but I had a Prototype action figure that was one of my favorite toys. He was my stand-in for every robot or super suit I needed (I usually “cast” my toys into roles for whatever I was playing; they were rarely who they were actually meant to be).
I love Sam and Max, but I never thought the cartoon lived up to the game or the comics
Exactly! The cartoon lost the dry humor. Not to mention the implication that Max will actually murder someone in a not-zany kind of way.
Ninja Turtles was my entire childhood. So easily that one.
Man, I remember when The Mask and Ace Ventura crossed over. Once in his show and once in Ace's. If only they could've crossed over with the Dumb and Dumber cartoon lol
Can’t beat The Tick for me
Spawn slap so hard I hope the new movie is made in my life time and isn't complete crap
I will not stand for this Duckman erasure.
https://imgur.com/a/TvJ9oAv
King Chicken!
The Maxx
ah, before Grifter was owned by DC.
All of WildStorm is owned by DC comics.
Now, yes. That wasn't the case for a long time though.
While The Maxx is my favorite comic of the bunch, and the adaptation was great, The Tick can’t be beat!
The HBO Spawn show is the best iteration of the character. I loved how the political corruption and Spawn's story blend together. I'd rather they finish the story of the show than doing the movie that's never going to come. Keith David is perfect as Spawn too.
All f% amazing!!! Good times!
The tick. SPOON!
The tick!
Wildcats had a kickass theme song.
Adult me would say something different. But at the age I was, TMNT all day!
Turtle power forever 🐢🐢🐢🐢🥷🏽🥷🏽🥷🏽🥷🏽🍕🍕🍕🍕💜💙🧡♥️
But close second is The Tick hahaha so bummed when it didn't get renewed for a 4th season but I knew even then it was a different kind of humor SPOOOOOON
The Tick or Sam & Max for me Both were absolutely incredible
Sam And Max was funny af and deserved more
Tick, Sam and Max, and Spawn are all my faves for different reasons.
Spawn. That is of course unless I missed the part in any of the others where the protagonist yells at a blind dude asking if he's blind, to which the blind guy responds with something like "Well... Yeah. 🤷🏽♂️" I literally died and Snapchated that to all of my friends without context who also died. I really wish I would've saved the video. I'm pretty sure it happens within the first 6 episodes or so.
It's so weird to think of TMNT as "indie" just because of how mainstream it's seen because of that show, lol.
Very easy, The Maxx
No love for Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot, huh?
Based big guy and rusty mention
The original 'The Mask' series is so fun
The Tick. Also led to the venture bros!
I was kinda fond of Hate. Edit - misread title. Didn’t see it was for an indie comic book show. My mistake.
Definitely should have been one
Mines got to be swat cats. Idk its just one of the cartoons i remember waking up early to see on Saturday mornings.
Sam and max was a comic book ? I only knew the video game
Spawn was good
Damn. The Tick brought me so much joy but the MAXX is utterly perfect. I’m gonna say MAXX
The Maxx was a big favorite of mine back in the day.
The Maxx was super cool, then i found Spawn 😎
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs! That show had a strangely profound effect on my life.
Darkwing Duck for me.
Wait was that based on a comic???
You can't get less independent than Disney. Homie is very confused.
Was darkwing 80s or 90s? Cannabis and age has dulled my sense of time.
It ran in the early 90s
The Tick was my jam. I used to have a bunch of the comics too be I haven’t been able to find them for years.
It’s hard to choose between these!
The Tick. Oh, what a goofy work is man.
It’s the tick Duh-dweee-duh-duh-duh-dwee-dow
I don't know who "the Maxxx" is, I've seen his picture around before, but I think I only just realized that white part of his head is his *chin*. I've always seen it as like, weird upper teeth with no lower jaw.
Nope those are his “teeth”. He’s supposed to be a bunny rabbit (long story). It’s on Paramount+ I believe and an amazing, if not super weird, story. The animators just adapted Sam Keith’s original artwork rather than recreating. The result is so good. Edit: not on Paramount, but less than $20 on Prime/Apple TV
I did not know it was on P+!! I know what I'm watching next
I’m so sorry I was incorrect. It is available on Prime and Apple TV for less than $20! Treat yourself!
Cybersix
There was an animated WildC.A.T.S.?!
TMNT when I was a kid. The Tick when I was a bit older.
TMNT was technically 80s
The Mask.
The maxx was awesome. I really wanted Sam and Max to be better than it was, but let's have a little love for Duckman!
As an Englishman, I have to ask. Who are these "Ninja" Turtles you speak of?
Is this about the whole they were called hero instead of Ninja in the UK thing?
Aye. Such a weird change looking back. Even hearing the theme song with Ninja sounds odd Haha
Sam and Max was a comic? Legit thought it started with the games.
Definitely the tick.
The Maxx and Spawn
Me and my boyfriend watch Sam and Max cause it's gay as hell, and so are we.
The tick still holds ALL the way up
I forgot about the Maxx. That’s a fun little ‘90s flash back to MTV and my couch.
Freakazoid?
Stolen from Mike Allreds Madman
The Tick. Fun to watch Edlin's artistic skill improve and grow with each issue. Also, Edlin didn't write and draw that many Tick comics, so you can read them all fairly quickly
Remember *The Red Eye*?
My favorite was Paul the Samurai. But it's been years since I've read the comics, and I don't recall the Red Eye. That being said, I just bought the Complete Edlund edition. So I'll be reading it again soon. Amazon had it for like $40 👍
Mighty max
Strangers in Paradise
Savage dragon
Spawn. If it was just indie show ever, then TMNT 2003/2012 would take it.
Spawn....you know we are missing one great super hero....darkwing duck...lmao
Spawn is the only one i’ve seen
I remember reading my uncle's comics. It was about bugs. And powers? Can't recall what they're called.
Man wild cats got me
*The Tick*. And it’s not even fuckin close.
Cybersix
Spawn. Then tick.
BARRY - Who’s the jerk that calls himself the Tick!?! TICK ~ I’M THAT JERK!!!!
Tmnt But the Mask was a good series, I saw a couple episodes thr other fay its still alot of fun.
It’s a lot more comic accurate than the movie too, including Walter from the book and giving Kellaway a more prominent role
The Tick
Sam & Max is on Tubi.
The tick: "Lady Liberty shines as a beacon of hope, Arthur! Her unwavering resolve illuminates the path of justice for all who seek it. Onward, to defend her honor!"
Definitely Spawn
Growing up in South Africa in the 90s/2000s, The Mask is the only one I think we got, and I LOVED it. I still need to try The Tick, it looks amazing.
Sam and Max, ez, 10/10, New York times best seller, favorite ways to eat a corn beef sandwich
The Tick
I didn’t know wildcats had a show
Spawn and Keith David
I hated The Mask cartoon as a kid. Was boring to me. Was it actually any good?
The Tick is so good. I want to say was but I rewatch it so much it’s as though it never be left us. Shoutout to MAXX too it was a cool show
Oooff… tough choice between The Tick and The Maxx…
No1 thick,!No1 Spawn
Sam & Max 100%
Cadillacs and Dinosaurs
Groo the Wanderer!! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Groo_cover_issue1.jpg
I still rewatch the Sam & Max cartoon every now and again
The Tick! I liked Savage Dragon, The Maxx, and Spawn too being an Image kid. I never knew Sam and Max had a cartoon…
As much as I loved '87 TMNT, and how it was such a staple to my childhood, I have to say the 2003 TMNT was better. Mainly because Peter Laird had creative control.
The Mask was amazing back when I was a kid, The Tick is still amazing, and Spawn is even more amazing.
The Maxx had a show? I had no idea. Also, I only vaguely remember the WILDCATS, but I feel like a remember liking it
Highly recommend it. It’s got really gorgeous animation for a tv budget at the time, and it’s fully adult as it needs to be, airing on MTV.
Wildcats!
Spawn!
Tick is on another level. I like all these shows but that Tick cartoon was really something else.
Mummies Alive!
The Tick, best writing and great animation
Easily The Tick just thinking of Speak the capybara and I wish the third and final season would be released on some kind of physical media.
The mask was good because it had overpowered abilities
Spawn for sure. I wish they would could bring it back or at least finished where they left off
Tmnt classic
Biker mice from mars!
Not an indie/third party comic tho, it was made by one of the big two, marvel
Yea I don’t remember it being a comic. But I didn’t know marvel had a hand in it!
Marvel also created the storyline for Transformers!
Image Comics ABC America's Best Comics - imprint made especially for Alan Moore
Are we really calling image indi. In the 90s, they out sold dc
It's not on here and I don't know if it was a comic but super duper sumos, street sharks, hiker mice from Mars and the Mummy cartoon deserve respect.
I definitely wouldn't consider TMNT an indie show lol.
It was an underground indie comic at the time
Sorry lol. I'm a huge TMNT fan, and I know the history, but I guess I just misinterpreted the title.
The original comic was an indie comic. The show began with a tie in with the Archie comic but they stopped the association around ten comics in.
