I was scared to go to houses that had them (or confederate flags). The Congressman was unbothered (he is black). He said “I’m going to get them to put one of my yard signs next to that sambo.” 🤣🤣

There are serious deep rooted racist undertones that black people have a serious issues with about the black jokey on lawns and the south historically and was not cool like at all! It really shows that they do not have the empathy, understanding, or historical knowledge to make fun of something very serious. Forced plot points have been the premise of the whole series throughout the 12 seasons (which is what makes it great). It’s about taking small things and making a big deal about it ir taking extreme action over it. Yes any normal person wouldn’t fire their attorney because he looks like a totally different dude you don’t like. Though common action to trivial situations wouldn’t make for a good show.
IDK I think it's been less forced in past seasons, like in the moment larry's actions usually seem reasonable then unforseen consequences are revealed later, A part of this episode in particular I can point to as forced in playing out the way it did to make things awkward for larry is when he tried to buy the black lawn jockey if he simply just explained that he needed to replace it for the air bnb he was staying at because he broke it trying to move it because it made him uncomfortable all the awkwardness could have been easily avoided
Or that between Jeff and Larry they’re worth like $600 million and they’d realize that losing your deposit is better than dedicating your day to finding a black lawn jockey.
Show has always been like that. Larry is really wealth but many episodes are about him being cheap or doing some shit gig for money, like flying to Atlanta for a birthday party.

I’m surprised Larry didn’t just say he’d pay it, rather than trawl around all day looking for a replacement lawn jockey, and all the drama and farcical happenings that would ensue.
But also, this isn’t my first time watching Curb.
The owner of the AirBnB can come after you for damages that exceed the deposit. They didn't say that on the show but, in real life, they can. If you leave a $500 deposit and cause $10,000 worth of damage, they'll come after you for the rest. Not sure how much a lawn jockey costs, but you get my point. Obviously this was just a plot device for this episode. In the real world, Susie should have contacted the owner/manager, stated the lawn jockey was damaged and offer to pay for the cost of one.
People will enjoy the show more if they just accept that the show took a turn after the long layoff between S8 and S9.
Everything S9 onwards has had a different feel and I’ve come to accept that. I still enjoy watching these characters on screen and don’t spend much time analyzing it beyond that.

This was super satisfying in terms of foreshadowing! With the hair dye, it was quicker — Jeff mentioned the heat, and when he started sweating it hit me that the Lawn Jockey would too. But when the car stopped at the church lunch I was bracing myself for the reveal, and it was better that he was going to get away with it for a few minutes before everything came crashing down.
Either way, I got more of what I wanted last week with more Susie to love to hate! Also, I’ll definitely have to watch Seasons 1-9 after this is done in order to learn who Mocha Joe was.

I think the law is something around bribing people to vote, giving them gifts, etc. you’re allowed to bring your own water and usually activists have water stations setup a few feet away. Bribing people to vote with alcohol, gifts, cash, etc. used to be a thing in the 19th century so this law could’ve originated from that?
Curb isn’t about pressing political issues.. it’s a show about nothing much like Seinfeld and challenges dumb social norms. If I wanted to watch low quality political jokes, I’d watch SNL. Politics is annoying and I don’t want to see it everywhere.
The only reason this “joke” was written into this season is because they don’t have an understanding of what to make fun of in Georgia is my opinion. The Klansman bit would’ve been hilarious this season and that lawn jockey bit was trash and predictable imo. This episode had so many great moments. The mocha joe's bit was a fun surprise, and just the whole Larry accidentally being a hero and pleading not guilty, brilliant.
It just felt so forced. None of it made any sense. They show Atlanta like it’s from the 19th century lol. I’ve lived there.. they just present all these stereotypes of the South and don’t know what to make fun of over there..
I wasn't so hot on the first episode, but once I realized this is leading to a Seinfeld finale send-off, I was more on board.

I have to agree. I still enjoyed some of the jokes and concepts in this episode, but it feels so rigid in its presentation that it's lost a lot of its charm.
Not to mention late to the game. It's been 4 years since the Giuliani hair dye bit. Even It's Always Sunny covered that back in 2021.
Why do I get the feeling that I'm watching a totally different show? On paper, it still kind of looks like Curb. Larry getting into trouble doing something that is completely misconstrued and fumbling his way out of it. BUT everything from the weird cuts and camera angles, to the lifeless "forced" performances from almost every actor (and we KNOW it's not a lack of talent from the cast), to the weird lighting, it all just seems so "off" to me. It's not BAD, it's just not what I'm used to from this show. I hope there will be a payoff at the end and that maybe they are completely aware of how weird this season feels, but it's just like they got all new writers, a new director, and a whole new crew, none of which ever saw a single episode of the show before they started filming.
100% - it really should've ended on Season 8. Every season after the long hiatus has tarnished the legacy. The newer episodes are nowhere near as good as the first 8 seasons.
They feel like forced performances because the subject material isn't funny. So it feels like they're trying to sell it. You don't have to try very hard to be funny when everyone decides to stick around and play poker after Yoshi tried to commit suicide.
And I would also be willing to bet this was shot with a completely different crew. It looks like a Tyler Perry movie.
That's something I don't hear mentioned much, and admittedly haven't looked into in great detail. But you have to wonder how much of Curb's greatness in the golden era was due to directing as well as the "writing"/improv/performances. I wouldn't be surprised if Larry Charles and a lot of the golden era Curb guys have left years ago.
I agree. Curb used to have a natural feel of, “I wonder where this is going”, and now almost everything feels forced and predictable. Almost like how viral videos these days are scripted and you know it, versus the days when videos on the internet were mostly in the moment.
The shots coming from underneath the Lawn Jockey were so bizarre. I kept expecting something to come out of it, but it was just one of the oddest TV shots I've ever seen with no sense of purpose.
When things become over-produced, they lose the feeling that they once evoked in us. It happens with almost everything. Curb was released in 4:3 and stayed that was for six seasons. The scripting often felt like characters were intentionally cutting each other off and stumbling over their words to give the show a sense of authenticity, and the best gags were in their infancy. A lot of those gags have been reproduced for a quick nostalgic laugh in later seasons and now that we're at the end of the series, the actors/actresses are caked from head to toe in makeup to hide their age, the production value has shot up which makes it feel more cinematic and in my honest opinion, they've run out of scenarios. It just scrapes the barrel.

The Joe DeAngelo thing really has me wondering if all this is a massive setup or not real. Joe DeAngelo was the name of the Original Night Stalker. Then the interesting connection with Larry being recognized on Morning Joe (coffee). Being in Atlanta where it is really hot "like coffee should be" almost makes this season feel like some sort of fever dream.

The Klansman bit would’ve been hilarious this season and that lawn jockey bit was trash and predictable imo. Even the part where they complain about the heat felt forced lol.. they barely got out of the car and it felt so unnatural. It just feels off this season. They’ve probably got a lower budget for this season? Which is probably why they’re filming in Georgia for the tax breaks.

Episode 2 was better purely by way of no Maria Sophia or Irma. But Curb has been so-so for years now. This is just what it is.

You should know by now that every “fan subreddit” is just a bunch of people hating on the show they claim to like. This was a great episode.
Not only that but the show has been on for a long time, quality is going to take a dip, it is what it is.
Yeah, i know. I realized that a while back, I just think they nailed that episode and wanted to show support to the show. This episode had so many great moments. The mocha joe's bit was a fun surprise, and just the whole Larry accidentally being a hero and pleading not guilty, brilliant.

I wasn't so hot on the first episode, but once I realized this is leading to a Seinfeld finale send-off, I was more on board. The last two seasons of this shows seems so forced and formulated. Seems to be rehashing the same old routine again and again. Just feels stale and dated.

I have to agree. I still enjoyed some of the jokes and concepts in this episode, but it feels so rigid in its presentation that it's lost a lot of its charm. Not to mention late to the game. It's been 4 years since the Giuliani hair dye bit. Even It's Always Sunny covered that back in 2021.

Why do I get the feeling that I'm watching a totally different show? On paper, it still kind of looks like Curb. Larry getting into trouble doing something that is completely misconstrued and fumbling his way out of it. BUT everything from the weird cuts and camera angles, to the lifeless "forced" performances from almost every actor (and we KNOW it's not a lack of talent from the cast), to the weird lighting, it all just seems so "off" to me. It's not BAD, it's just not what I'm used to from this show. I hope there will be a payoff at the end and that maybe they are completely aware of how weird this season feels, but it's just like they got all new writers, a new director, and a whole new crew, none of which ever saw a single episode of the show before they started filming.
100% - it really should've ended on Season 8. Every season after the long hiatus has tarnished the legacy. The newer episodes are nowhere near as good as the first 8 seasons.
They feel like forced performances because the subject material isn't funny. So it feels like they're trying to sell it. You don't have to try very hard to be funny when everyone decides to stick around and play poker after Yoshi tried to commit suicide. And I would also be willing to bet this was shot with a completely different crew. It looks like a Tyler Perry movie.
That's something I don't hear mentioned much, and admittedly haven't looked into in great detail. But you have to wonder how much of Curb's greatness in the golden era was due to directing as well as the "writing"/improv/performances. I wouldn't be surprised if Larry Charles and a lot of the golden era Curb guys have left years ago.
I agree. Curb used to have a natural feel of, “I wonder where this is going”, and now almost everything feels forced and predictable. Almost like how viral videos these days are scripted and you know it, versus the days when videos on the internet were mostly in the moment.
The shots coming from underneath the Lawn Jockey were so bizarre. I kept expecting something to come out of it, but it was just one of the oddest TV shots I've ever seen with no sense of purpose.
When things become over-produced, they lose the feeling that they once evoked in us. It happens with almost everything. Curb was released in 4:3 and stayed that was for six seasons. The scripting often felt like characters were intentionally cutting each other off and stumbling over their words to give the show a sense of authenticity, and the best gags were in their infancy. A lot of those gags have been reproduced for a quick nostalgic laugh in later seasons and now that we're at the end of the series, the actors/actresses are caked from head to toe in makeup to hide their age, the production value has shot up which makes it feel more cinematic and in my honest opinion, they've run out of scenarios. It just scrapes the barrel.

Then the interesting connection with Larry being recognized on Morning Joe (coffee).
