I've had to give up a dog before it sucks and I don't know if you ever necessarily get over it but it does get easier over time.

I’m so sorry and it sounds awful even if it might be best. It also sounds like you’re doing your best to limit animosity and if you can keep that up, maybe there could be a joint custody opportunity? My dad and his awful wife finally divorced and he kept two of the dogs, the third she drops off at his house every day because he’s retired, then she picks her up again at night. It can be really great to share custody of a dog, past the awfulness of the breakup, as long as yiu are on the same page about being broken up. But it also sounds like you aren’t worried she won’t be a good owner. That’s really important.

I've considered this and hearing an experience where it worked is helpful. I may bring this up unless she decides to move out of state which I'm worried she will :/

I have been sharing custody with my ex for almost 2 years. We each have him for 6-8 weeks. It is wonderful when the dog is with me but I feel horrible when it near the time to pass the dog back to my ex. Feels my heart break every time & it's getting worse. But I guess for my case is because the dog is 15 years old and I just feel sad & worried that I won't see him again. So I guess, sharing custody is wonderful if you don't get affected too badly when you have to pass the dog over.
