Extremely unpopular opinion, but I really liked FF2 once I leaned into the bullshit. It almost requires you to do some really cheesy minmaxing that would make you game breakingly OP in any other game.
Weirdly enough, I think that only works because it seems like they did it by accident. When a game makes the intentional choice to do that (Disgaea comes to mind), it loses me
I don't know who that opinion is unpopular with, because pretty much everyone who likes FF2 says that. Humor FF2, do things its way, and it will humor you and let you win a game of low grindiness and middling difficulty.
The issue with FF2 is that it has a lot of misinformation thats been telephoned around for years. A significant portion of the fanbase either didn’t play long enough to “get it” or just parroted a critique they heard without actually playing it.
This isn’t to say that FF2 doesn’t have some gnarly design flaws(the empty rooms with nothing in them come to mind), but a halfway decent understanding of how it works will make for a far more streamlined experience than it’s predecessor.
I think the empty rooms were supposed to be 'trap rooms', because the encounter rate is dialed up to obscene levels. FF4 pulled this is a dungeon in the underworld.
It’s very forward thinking in terms of its narrative goals and focus on revolution/sacrifice, but imho it was almost *too* ahead of its time. Due to it basically being FF1.5, at least on NES with its presentation, certain story moments where a character dies felt silly.
Like they over-relied on death to make its narrative punchier. Square almost instantly fixed this though, as while it’s still egregious at times in FF4 the better hardware allowed for the story in that game to shine much more than otherwise. Also, a better soundchip led to better a soundtrack… like, for real, is there a better opening song in FF aside from The Red Wings? It sets the tone of the game perfectly.
If FF2 came at a point in time where significant advancements in storytelling in video games existed, then it would be one of the best games in the series. Just, as it stands though, it’s an interesting product of some seriously risky development decisions. I’m glad they made it the way they did, as I always prefer working outside of the box than staying in (especially for final fantasy), but I do genuinely believe that FF2 is a bad game lol.
I’ve never played the NES version of 2 but the subsequent remakes significantly rebalanced the game to the point where the only grinding I really did was to level up status/buff spells. Just playing normally and not running from battles frequently, kept my party at just the right stats usually
2 is probably one of the most underrated games in the FF series, which I can’t say the same about DQ2. It deserves its reputation, unfortunately
FF3 ended up being my least favorite game in the series, whereas DQ3 was a classic
Yes, I played the pixel remasters of FF games (never played the series before, I finished the first 4 as of now) and I loved 2, and 3 is my least favorite
I would probably say FF5 is more underrated than FF2 being in-between 4 and 6. But I do get you, I like 2's quirky mechanics and plot.
FF3 is a funny case, the DS version is balls to walls hard (but playing without a White Mage/ Devout at all is probably my own fault xD). I'm playing through the pixel remaster and I'm having a much better time. The Monk was nerfed to hell in the DS remake, but back to form in PM.
And yes, DQ3 is a true classic. Still waiting on that 2.5HD remake. There's more radio silence on this than SMT5...
I think part of it stems from that it kinda bucked the normal for a typical RPG at that time.
There was the tried and true formula of you go fight monsters, get XP and level up. As you progress, you'll get better stuff.
FF2 was more of a "Here, go play your character as you want and figure it out."
I’m glad the SaGa franchise has managed to scrape by all these years. I can never beat any of them, but they’re fun to dip my toes into for the unique mechanics every once in a while.
It's nice to see 2&3 on current consoles. I plan on grinding them out. I did start 2. I heard you can lock yourself out from beating the game. That's kind of holding me back a bit 😂😂
FFIII is basically FFI with a lot more content, better pacing, bigger world, etc. Its tied with V for my favorite. However, you'll probably want to play the Pixel Remasters instead of the Famicom original.
FFII had a lot of interesting gameplay ideas. But it really needed a remake to fix it (and improve the story/characters). They've never really done it. Only constant remasters.
I'm playing the PS1 Origins of FF2 on one of those retro handhelds.
I did pick up the Pixel Remaster off of Play-Asia, but I'm trying not to open it.
I just don't know if I should play the PS1 versions of 4-6, or the GBA versions.
People that don't think 5 is the absolute mountaintop for SNES FF...I will never understand. The story isn't as gripping as VI, but it's just *fun* to play! The tactical options are much, much better than IV or VI, and they don't force party member changes on you like either of those games.
I will always, 100% of the time, pick the game that says "here's the tools, make your build" over "here, your progress is predetermined."
Its why I prefer VIII out of all the FFs, it's the most build control you ever get in the franchise, with *maybe* the exclusion of Stranger of Paradise, or FFXI.
>Zelda II is *light years* better than Zelda 1 and I’ll die on that hill.
You'll die on that hill a very lonely person. 😂
They're so different from each other that it's not surprising that they're polarizing.
They're both fun, but I prefer the first one for the most part.
Ah. If you like old, difficult games, you're missing out. Like. It's difficult, but with patience and perseverance, beatable. Until the very last temple. That level is fucking bullshit. And it's not a difficulty spike in the traditional sense... They decided to add walls and floors that you can pass through without giving you a way to see them and it's a legitimate maze.
Same. I like the 2nd one too, I just wish there was a definitive remake or reimagining of it so it can be a proper game not just nonsensical bullshit puzzles
Not even the DMC team tals about DMC2. They know It sucks, everyone does. DMC 3 is amazing, so was 4 and 5 (for was a little rushed, but five was incredible).
Personally, I enjoy Dark Souls 2 (Scholar of the First Sin Edition) the most out of the series. It's the one I've replayed the most, and I've always enjoyed the level design and atmosphere, though I admit most of the bosses were a bit mediocre, the bosses have never been my favorite part of the series.
Yea DS2 is still somehow criminally underrated. I never understood most of the criticism leveled against it. Possibly the FromSoft game I had the most fun in too!
Maybe it’s just me but I kinda dislike the xenosaga coming off of playing ps1 and snes rpgs because the story feels way longer than it has any right to be.
They're cutscene heavy for sure, I can see how its unappealing to people who like plot and all. Luckily you can skip the cutscenes, and I think the gameplay makes up for it. The cutscenes are very well done, too, but the plot is very heady to a fault. You have to remember SO MUCH to keep up with past events + the fact characters conceal motives and where they were at certain points, so you have to keep going back and filling in gaps in time. I *love* that but I can see how others would be slamming their head against the wall.
The same goes for Xenoblade
The first is a classic
The second one is still ok but it has a lot of flaws
The third is fucking awesome
And yes I do know that Xenoblade Chronicles X exists, but i am only talking about numbered titles.
You could include Xenoblade X and it still works for a third of the fanbase because they think 2 is the best of the first three entries. Just depends on your perspective.
I think KH1 is so much better. I replayed both recently and KH1 felt magical to me. KH2 was ok, but the intro was bad, it took a while to pick up steam, the story was confusing, and there was too much going on. KH1 is a much more refined game
Zelda 2 and Castlevania 2 were my favorites of each series, even though most people think of them as the worst of them. With Dragon Warrior, the fourth one is the one I consider the masterpiece, but 3 is usually thought of as the real masterpiece.
Same on the castlevania front, it's only really considered bad because of the translation, and once you fix that it's the best castlevania until rondo or symphony
I think the SNES trilogy is like this too. FF4 the classic, FF5 “the 2nd one”, FF6 the GOAT. Although I personally enjoy 5 more than 4, I understand the popular sentiment isn’t with me on that.
And I thank you for your measured consideration. I invested far more hours on FFIV than on any other FF, it still resonates with me today. I never got into the job system so V definitely feels like the odd one for me in the SNES era.
V is plenty popular in Japan, the biggest thing going against it was that Square USA decided on skipping it because they thought it was too hard or something.
It'd be The Elder Scrolls except Daggerfall is worshipped more than Arena. Maybe if you work backwards making the 1st one 5, 2nd one 4, and 3rd one is Morrowind
Mario&Luigi, which I always hated how they never remade Partners in Time, they skipped it and instead made a remake of a newer game that didn't need a remake and went bankrupt.....
I loved Partners in Time, I didn't even know it was disliked until I read it on the internet years later
I feel the same way! In fact my preference is PiT > SS > BIS, although I feel all 3 were solid entries. Can't speak for Dream Team or Paper Jam since I never played them.
Ratchet and Clank 2 is probably the best one of the trilogy and the game that set up the entire franchise with it's Arena/Gladiator Planet, Level up system, and move away from the platforming and focus on shooting gameplay (also strafing!)
Kinda applies to Phantasy Star if you consider the fact that PS3 is technically a side story that doesn't take place in the Algol star system.
I love PS2, but the second I think about those endgame dungeons any desire to replay the game evaporates immediately.
Atelier particularly the arland saga, this includes a HUGE caveat.
The first atelier rorona is without a doubt the worst in the series, they made that weird decision to make hp your mp from what I understand (I've never actually played it) and it also had a brutal time limit, some people not being able to even get anything other than the bad ending.
The big BUT for anyone who isn't in the know is that they completely remade rorona from the ground up after the trilogy was complete to match the current games.
So now rorona is probably the most fully featured game in the trilogy with a lot of QoL decisions that make the 2nd game, atelier totori, look worse in comparison (even though it was originally a huge step up)
The final game, atelier meruru, is definitely considered the best in the trilogy
Ys games with party member:
YS Seven = The classic
YS Memories of Celceta = The second one
YS Lacrimosa of Dana = THE GOAT
YS Monstrum Nox = The fourth one
Ngl probably Pokémon for me 😂 I completely missed the boat on Johto and I’ve never been able to get into it even after playing it several times. Ruby and sapphire by far have the most replay value for me because it is short enough to play through multiple times without getting burnt out halfway through the game
This does not apply to Spyro for sure, nor Tomb Raider (talking about the original games, not the remake).
And neither to the Soul Reaver Saga (1, 2 and LoK Defiance). It doesn't work even if you consider Blood Omen 1 in the list, since in that case the first Soul Reaver would be the "second" game...
Yeah for Spyro, Ripto's Rage was the best, they kind of fell off with Year of the Dragon when they decided to make so many minigames and side characters.
Super Metroid IS Metroid 3. This actually works very well for both Metroid and Metroid Prime (at least when it comes to online discourse, MP2 is actually the best one in the trilogy).
Metal Gear Solid. The First one is a Classic, the second is the Meh, and the Third One is a masterpiece. Then you have MGS the Movie (MGS4) and the unfinished one (MGS5).
Perfect example. Witcher 1 was incredible for it's time. I thought witcher 2 was bland and linear. 3 was just amazing and such a huge leap for the series.
Except Mega Man. The second one is generally considered the best, the third well liked but not the best and the first is easily the least popular of those three.
Disagree, Zelda 2, Mario 2, Mega Man 2, Star Tropics 2, Castlevania 2, Donkey Kong Junior, and Double Dragon 2 are all fantastic.
Final Fantasy 2 i'll give you.
Dragon Quest II I like a lot, but more so their remakes with better balance, but the final stretch to the final boss is brutal in all versions. I get to brag that I did beat the NES version though.
Mario, Zelda, Castlevania, Dark Souls, DMC, Metal Gear Solid (at least that’s what people thought at the time, MGS2 is great), Metroid, Halo and Final Fantasy,
Budokai. The first wasn't a great fighting game but a great Dragon Ball game (for its time), a so-so sequel later then Budokai 3 came and elevated the series (and DB games in general) to a whole another level that was only recently surpassed by FighterZ in 2018.
Mario, Zelda, Castlevania, and FF all had a second game with significantly different mechanics, then the third was more like the first. DQ2 isn't that different in terms of gameplay, but it kind of fits into the same pattern in that it's less straightforward. Zelda, Castlevania, and DQ also all made the third game a prequel.
OG God of War trilogy. Second game was fine but most of my nostalgic memories was from 1 since it was the start of everything and then 3 which was definitely my favorite of the trilogy
Legend of Zelda series for sure fuckn the original nes game, links adventure is mid but can still be enjoyed, then u have link to the past which is imo the best 2d Zelda game
Super Mario bros. 1-3. Double Dragon 1-3. Wizards and Warriors 1-3. Each of these games, the second in the series had some weird gimmick. 3rd game was like a comeback opertunity, and they came back strong.
I think Pokemon avoided this (though it wasn't NES). Gen 2 is literally Gen 1 but better; it took the Gen 1 engine, and polished and improved literally everything. Graphics, sound, music, content, and then added even more on top of that. There are still glitches and such mind you, but Pokemon Crystal is peak Gameboy Pokemon with the amount of polish it added on top of everything else Gen 2 already did with G/S.

Currently experiencing this with Final Fantasy II. I don't know how III stacks in this format, but FF II is a much different beast than the others.
Extremely unpopular opinion, but I really liked FF2 once I leaned into the bullshit. It almost requires you to do some really cheesy minmaxing that would make you game breakingly OP in any other game. Good FF2 information is spreading year by year, at least.
I think the empty rooms were supposed to be 'trap rooms', because the encounter rate is dialed up to obscene levels. FF4 pulled this is a dungeon in the underworld.
I guess the unpopular part was "I really liked FF2" lol
It’s very forward thinking in terms of its narrative goals and focus on revolution/sacrifice, but imho it was almost *too* ahead of its time. People dramatically overstate FF2's issues. I think it's a great game
Why does everyone concentrate on the leveling and not the story?
Then it spawned Romancing SaGa. I didn't hate 2 like others but it was interesting using weapons and abilities to level them up.
I’m glad the SaGa franchise has managed to scrape by all these years. I can never beat any of them, but they’re fun to dip my toes into for the unique mechanics every once in a while.

III is definitely my favorite of the NES games and where the series really found its footing IMO.

2 is better than 1
This really applies to FF IMO. FF3 will always be my favorite (although XII is a close second). FF1 is classic and FF2 is pretty forgettable.
3 wasn’t that rememberable tbh
Works with the snes ones too. 4 is great, 5 is eh, 6 is GOAT.
People that don't think 5 is the absolute mountaintop for SNES FF...I will never understand. The story isn't as gripping as VI, but it's just *fun* to play! I played III and it’s a nice game. I quite enjoyed the gameplay and (most of) the characters, but the story isn’t that great imo.
Zelda. 1st one is classic, 2nd is weird, link to the past was a home-run.
Zelda II is *light years* better than Zelda 1 and I’ll die on that hill. ALTTP is the best video game ever though IMO
>Zelda II is *light years* better than Zelda 1 and I’ll die on that hill. You'll die on that hill a very lonely person. 😂 They're so different from each other that it's not surprising that they're polarizing. They're both fun, but I prefer the first one for the most part.
Bruh, Zelda II is indeed a better drink coaster LOL
Wha...? No. Neither of them make for good drink coasters. 🤔 Save that disrespect for Friday the 13th or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
I’m gonna be honest. I haven’t played Zelda II (electric Boogaloo)
Ah. If you like old, difficult games, you're missing out. Like. It's difficult, but with patience and perseverance, beatable. Until the very last temple. That level is fucking bullshit. Go ahead, I'm not going to help you down.
You're not alone on that hill
I love Zelda II! I play it often and even own the GBA port.
I beat it last year for the first time on Nintendo Switch Online (using save states). It was a bitch but also very fun.
[удалено]
Same. I like the 2nd one too, I just wish there was a definitive remake or reimagining of it so it can be a proper game not just nonsensical bullshit puzzles
Devil May Cry is definitely one of these
Not even the DMC team tals about DMC2. They know It sucks, everyone does. DMC 3 is amazing, so was 4 and 5 (for was a little rushed, but five was incredible).
DMC2's only real contribution to the series is Bloody Palace mode. Otherwise it'd be better off forgotten.
Honestly? Dark Souls
100% Dark Souls to the letter
DS2 may be the weakest entry in the series, but it's still a great and fun game.
SMB3
I know it's radically different, but I like SMB2 more than 1 or 3.
Mega Man would like a word with you.
Mega Man exists to throw this meme off because 2 is arguably the best game in the series.
Came here to say this.
Xenosaga. 1st one is classic 2nd one is... uhhh... 3rd one is phenomenal (though a lil rushed due to #2 doing nothing for hours)
Maybe it’s just me but I kinda dislike the xenosaga coming off of playing ps1 and snes rpgs because the story feels way longer than it has any right to be.
They're cutscene heavy for sure, I can see how its unappealing to people who like plot and all. Luckily you can skip the cutscenes, and I think the gameplay makes up for it. ehhh I think it varies for Xenoblade
Huh. I found first one classic. 2nd one good in a different way but akward 3 downright painful. But with amazing dlc that almost makes up for it.
Guess we just have different tastes
3 was a weird one for sure. I liked it more than 2, but it lacked a lot of that same momentum the first two had.
While I do think that III is the goat, I like II more than I ...
Kingdom Hearts, Chain of Memories, and KHII.
Nah cuz KH1 is better than KH2
That's wrong though.
I think KH1 is so much better. I replayed both recently and KH1 felt magical to me. KH2 was ok, but the intro was bad, it took a while to pick up steam, the story was confusing, and there was too much going on. KH1 is a much more refined game
Agreed, that’s objectively wrong
That's cheat.
Final fantasy 7-9 (or as I call it the PS1 FF trilogy) is like this
I think the SNES trilogy is like this too. FF4 the classic, FF5 “the 2nd one”, FF6 the GOAT. Although I personally enjoy 5 more than 4, I understand the popular sentiment isn’t with me on that.

V is plenty popular in Japan, the biggest thing going against it was that Square USA decided on skipping it because they thought it was too hard or something.
I enjoyed FF8, but the issue I feel a lot of people had was that after FF7, it's a hard thing to be compared too.
It doesn’t help that FF8 is a really bizarre follow-up. Its a JRPG that tried to be different, and for a lot of people it was just too different.
This is Devil May Cry for sure
Mario 3 and Castlevania 3 for sure.
DMC
The Legend of Zelda. Legend of Zelda is a classic and A Link to the Past is just a perfect game imo.
It'd be The Elder Scrolls except Daggerfall is worshipped more than Arena. Maybe if you work backwards making the 1st one 5, 2nd one 4, and 3rd one is Morrowind

Metal gear solid (now obviously 2 is highly regarded but back then it was different because you know what)
Cool thing is, this can work both ways, since MGS3 is the third “Solid” game, while MGS1 is the third Metal Gear game: both GOATs.
Could be but metal gear 2 is way better then 1
Disagree. But props to making metal gear 2 less open-world.
Yeah, I could say the same thing about Breath Of Fire.
I thought the first 3 were really good.. then 4 was like they half assed it and the fifth one was just sad
Nah, Dragon Quarter is dope.
Nah bro 4 and 5 are REALLY good, Dragon Quarter is such ahead of its time, give it another chance and u’ll see
4 and 5 are far and away my favorite BoF games.
Xenoblade
Dragon quest 5 and 8 tho 👌
Doesn't apply to dq imo. Dq 2 is definitely better than dq1
Fair, but Dragon Quest 3 is the best of the series even 30 years later.
Best out of the 3 for sure
Witcher tbh.
The witcher 2 is great and one sucks
Ratchet and Clank.
Ratchet and Clank 2 is probably the best one of the trilogy and the game that set up the entire franchise with it's Arena/Gladiator Planet, Level up system, and move away from the platforming and focus on shooting gameplay (also strafing!)
I think it was the most influential on the rest of the series but I definitely like it the least of the ps2 games!
Kinda applies to Phantasy Star if you consider the fact that PS3 is technically a side story that doesn't take place in the Algol star system. I love PS2, but the second I think about those endgame dungeons any desire to replay the game evaporates immediately.

Ys games with party member: YS Seven = The classic YS Memories of Celceta = The second one YS Lacrimosa of Dana = THE GOAT YS Monstrum Nox = The fourth one
Xenoblade is the prime example of this. The 1st game is a classic, the second one is a dumb cringefest and the 3rd one is like the best rpg ever.
Castlevania, if we’re talking about the NES entries
This is crazy I was JUST thinking about this yesterday
Definitely Castlevania. 1st 3 SMB games, too. Zelda. LTTP is prime gaming. I'd like to include Ninja Gaiden but II is by far the best of the three.
Ngl probably Pokémon for me 😂 I completely missed the boat on Johto and I’ve never been able to get into it even after playing it several times. Ruby and sapphire by far have the most replay value for me because it is short enough to play through multiple times without getting burnt out halfway through the game
Dragon Quest (Erdrick Trilogy)
I immediately thought of Dark Souls lol
Xenosaga series for a lot of people, but I'm the odd one out that prefers the first game over the third.
Devil May Cry fits this to a T
Devil May Cry
This does not apply to Spyro for sure, nor Tomb Raider (talking about the original games, not the remake). And neither to the Soul Reaver Saga (1, 2 and LoK Defiance). It doesn't work even if you consider Blood Omen 1 in the list, since in that case the first Soul Reaver would be the "second" game...
Yeah for Spyro, Ripto's Rage was the best, they kind of fell off with Year of the Dragon when they decided to make so many minigames and side characters.
This suits Halo too- except "the second one" is meant as a positive thing
Devil May Cry.
Super Mario brothers is this in a nutshell
Not metroid
If Metroid 3 is Super Metroid this is still probably pretty accurate. I liked NES Metroid way way more than Gameboy Samus Returns too.
Super Metroid IS Metroid 3. This actually works very well for both Metroid and Metroid Prime (at least when it comes to online discourse, MP2 is actually the best one in the trilogy).
Prime 2 > 3 > 1
Huge disagree about ff real 2 & 3 are garbage and the ones called 2&3 in English (actually 4&6) 2 is wayyyyy better
2D Metroid
The PS3 Yakuza games. I know they're 3, 4, and 5, but my brain calls it the HD trilogy so I'm using that one.
Devil May Cry?
Metal Gear Solid. The First one is a Classic, the second is the Meh, and the Third One is a masterpiece. Then you have MGS the Movie (MGS4) and the unfinished one (MGS5).
2 is my favourite of the original trilogy and that's a hill I'll die on
Definitely dark souls
The Witcher trilogy
Perfect example. Witcher 1 was incredible for it's time. I thought witcher 2 was bland and linear. 3 was just amazing and such a huge leap for the series.
My thoughts exactly lol
Oh that is easy Megaman Battle Network 1-3. 4 was horrible 5 was enjoyable and 6 is almost as good as 3
Well, that rules out Kingdom Hearts.
Devil May Cry on PS2
Except Mega Man. The second one is generally considered the best, the third well liked but not the best and the first is easily the least popular of those three.
Ace Attorney
Dq2 was pretty solid imo
Xenosaga fits
Metal Gear Solid! The absolute classic! Sons of Liberty, the weakest of the franchise. Snake Eater, the undisputed GOAT
Dark souls
Disagree, Zelda 2, Mario 2, Mega Man 2, Star Tropics 2, Castlevania 2, Donkey Kong Junior, and Double Dragon 2 are all fantastic. Final Fantasy 2 i'll give you. Dragon Quest II I like a lot, but more so their remakes with better balance, but the final stretch to the final boss is brutal in all versions. I get to brag that I did beat the NES version though.
Simon’s Quest had a larger impact on the series than Castlevania III - change my mind
Dark souls
Mario, Zelda, Castlevania, Dark Souls, DMC, Metal Gear Solid (at least that’s what people thought at the time, MGS2 is great), Metroid, Halo and Final Fantasy,
Dark souls
Halo
Classic: 5 Goat : 8 Second one : 11
Bioshock
The original Ninja Gaiden trilogy is a big exception. As is the NES TMNT trilogy
Warcraft.
The one it doesn’t make me think of is Megaman. I liked the third game, but Megaman 2 is what every other Megaman game had to measure up to.
I’m gonna go ahead with MGS
Considering MG1 and MG2 were decent Nintendo games and then MGS was a masterpiece I have to hard agree on this.
Definitely the Dark Souls series.
none
Not MegaMan.
Budokai. The first wasn't a great fighting game but a great Dragon Ball game (for its time), a so-so sequel later then Budokai 3 came and elevated the series (and DB games in general) to a whole another level that was only recently surpassed by FighterZ in 2018.
Zelda for sure
Lots of people saying Zelda. I love me some Link to the Past but Ocarina of Time is legendary status.
Danganronpa.
Professor Layton
Phoenix wright
Xenoblade
Super Mario Bros. of course!
except megaman
Mario, Zelda, Castlevania, and FF all had a second game with significantly different mechanics, then the third was more like the first. DQ2 isn't that different in terms of gameplay, but it kind of fits into the same pattern in that it's less straightforward. Zelda, Castlevania, and DQ also all made the third game a prequel.
Mega Man being the notable exception
Devil May Cry
Halo 1, 2 and 3
OG God of War trilogy. Second game was fine but most of my nostalgic memories was from 1 since it was the start of everything and then 3 which was definitely my favorite of the trilogy
Devil may cry
Legend of Zelda series for sure fuckn the original nes game, links adventure is mid but can still be enjoyed, then u have link to the past which is imo the best 2d Zelda game
Pretty much Xenoblade Chronicles.
every series except megaman and sonic
Super Mario bros. 1-3. Double Dragon 1-3. Wizards and Warriors 1-3. Each of these games, the second in the series had some weird gimmick. 3rd game was like a comeback opertunity, and they came back strong.
Devil May Cry
I think Pokemon avoided this (though it wasn't NES). Gen 2 is literally Gen 1 but better; it took the Gen 1 engine, and polished and improved literally everything. Graphics, sound, music, content, and then added even more on top of that. There are still glitches and such mind you, but Pokemon Crystal is peak Gameboy Pokemon with the amount of polish it added on top of everything else Gen 2 already did with G/S.
I think for Mega Man it's more: The First Game The Classic! (2) The Goat! (3)
Mega man 2 was awesome though.
For me it usually goes 1st game: Flawed but fun 2nd game: The GOAT that everyone hates for some reason 3rd game: The overrated one
The budokai series
Dark souls
Zelda 1 was a great start Zelda 2, well… Link to the Past is still the best in the series
Crash Bandicoot
Dark souls.
Dark souls Um american final fantasies devil may cry
Yea DQ to a T, but also FF.
This describes Dark Souls perfectly.
Mass effect
I’ve never heard anything put ME2 as the weakest game in the trilogy. Quite the opposite, in fact.
Castlevania Dragon Quest Zelda
DARK SOULS
