Looks more like tape residue than damage

StendGold

Yeah, I see the same thing. I'm not so sure a suitcase did that.

ConnectRutabaga3925

This. Happened to our place when we hired crappy painters. We fixed it by spot reapplying stain on our oak flooring. Think we used ambering stain. Stain, sand with 0 or 00 steel wool, repeat a few times and it was close to perfect.

obscuredreference

Do not attempt this on a friend’s floor without their ok though. As a woodworker, your chances of getting the color etc. right are very hit or miss. Way more miss than hit. (Edited to fix my English fails.)

Lendolar

*More miss than hit*

ConnectRutabaga3925

Yeah… that’s true. mine was the regular generic ambered oak that everyone was using in the 60’s, so I lucked out.

WestWoodworks

I think you’re half right… I actually JUST had a client with identical damage to their hardwood flooring… It was tape (they had taped the bottom of some plastic sheeting to the floor during a different project a few days prior), but the tape actually took up the poly. Had to be sanded and recoated.

elleeott

This, same thing happened to me. Oak floors already needed refinishing and was flaking off, a bit of tape lifted up a bunch of poly.

BigAsian69420

I’m assuming it was there to begin with, OP thinks they did it, frantically fixes it, home owner happy with there newly repaired floor.

thatmarblerye

Umm... goo gone will strip the top finish off the floor too. Seen it happen with the finish on vinyl flooring too. Rubbing alcohol is the better option here.

Marciamallowfluff

GooGone should not effect varnish at all. I do not know for sure what is on that floor but if it feels raised try GooGone, if depressed do not.

EPLemonSqueezy

What does my mood have to do with it?

4Bpencil

Use alcohol if down, crack a cold one, sounds like genuine advice to me

Thelorddogalmighty

But if you find yourself replying too often then seek professional advice

Marciamallowfluff

Good one.

wiggywack13

Not you, the wood. If it's depressed goo be gone won't be able to help because it's not goo on the floor, instead he'll have to call a psychiatrist.

pkeit32

This is under appreciated

Numbthumbz

All depends on oil or water based product on the floor to seal. goo gone or acetone could just bubble the flooring

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheArchangelLord

Goo gone is orange oil ya goof. Goof off is acetone and light petroleum distillate

PapaBePreachin

"Goof gone."

the_frozen_grocer

Goo gone is recommended by 9 out of 10 gynecologists. It also cleans floors.

BrotherOland

Seconding goo gone

cd36jvn

If they are house sitting and did not do the damage then don't do anything, the last thing you want is to make known damage worse by damaging the finish further. Goo gone is good but you do have to be careful with it.

Kirin1212San

Don’t do anything. You’re more at risk of making it worse than better.

socialpresence

I too have seen hundreds of 90's sitcoms.

T3n4ci0us_G

70s

HAL9000000

OP also maybe didn't cause the damage but rather didn't notice the damage was already there before putting his suitcase down.

Kirin1212San

Are you housesitting as a favor or for pay? If it’s for pay, I would charge less than what was originally agreed upon. Like I said, don’t do anything!! Let them fix it the way they want to. Though it’s likely it’s preexisting and they’ve been living with it just fine.

bluecar92

I would bet that's pre-existing damage. I can't see how a suitcase could cause that.

AndringRasew

Not unless OP's got a steamer trunk full of bibles being held up by a paint scraper.

Diligent_Rub7317

The bible pimp strikes again

ShortingBull

/r/oddlyspecific

statusquoexile

Well done, and thank you. This gave me a genuine laugh bright and early in the morning.

AndringRasew

It certainly paints a picture, doesn't it? Lol

[deleted]

I hope it was pre-existing but OP still removes it and leaves the home owners flabbergasted.

Available_Ad_9687

This. They would have to be some flat, edged, square, wheels to cause this. Definitely tape.

underwater_at_night

Don’t do anything without consulting the homeowner.

futureNurse_73

Thissssss. I’ve accidentally messed up something in a short-term rental & immediately contacted the owner. They will be more understanding if you’re just up front. Don’t try to “fix” it yourself, you can make it worse. If it makes you feel better OP, I damaged my hosts corian kitchen granite top with a hot pan and I had to pay up $2000. But she couldn’t be more nice about it. Mistakes happen, it’s fine. Landlords half way expect it too, that’s why deposits exist in the first place.

SocietyHumble4858

This should be the first post following the question.

PurpleSunCraze

However if their dog ran away, finding a similar one and some cans of spray paint will be essential.

blacklaagger

I'd really like to see your suitcase, or old timey trunk filled with bricks

Sleveless--

It's actually full of dildos...

jeffprobst

Dildos made of brick?

veravela_xo

The Dildos and Dildonts of House Sitting: Don’t be a Bag of Bricks

Apprehensive_Pain186

Am I in the right sub? Lol

Swimming-Welcome-271

Yes, glazed brick.

Sleveless--

There are... other dildo materials?

Swimming-Welcome-271

Sure! Cast iron, mortar, particle board, you name it!

Sleveless--

I bet that submarine would not have imploded with such high quality dildo materials.

lumpyandgrumpy

Anything a dildo if you're brave enough

BadBobbyH

Extremely dense dildos. Also the ever illusive ‘drilldo v3’

ermahgerdreddits

I can't believe you guys are giving OP instructions on how to fix this. If OP thinks they did this with their suitcase they are definitely not qualified to execute your repair strategies and they are just going to make things worse.

[deleted]

Given they mentioned paint… yeah this would be a bad place to start trying some DIY wood floor repairs. Nothing against OP at all for being unfamiliar with that realm of work.

papitaquito

I am also echoing as others have stated, looks to be pre existing damage.

Revolutionary-Rush89

Those are area rug tape marks. There was at some point an area rug there and they used some carpet tape to keep it from sliding around or rolling up edges and it has left it’s mark. These didn’t come from a suitcase. Don’t worry about it you didn’t do it and don’t do anything to those people’s floors.

Vigothedudepathian

Oh yeah thats exactly what it is.

No-Vermicelli-6941

Thank you everyone for the helpful advice. I am going to leave it be and ask them about it when they’re home. I am a young woman who obviously knows nothing about hardwood floors so these comments went a little over my head and I don’t want to risk more damage. Especially if it really is my fault and not tape residue. I will be doing my homework on hardwood floor repair to be more informed in the future lmao.

ZammoTheChoppa

Seriously doubt it was from your suitcase if you could show a picture of it that would help narrow down if it was

ben_jamin_h

Definitely nothing to do with a suitcase. That paint was either pulled off with tape or stripped by leaving something on it. It is not your fault!

mike_nova

I’m guessing a rug was previously taped there to prevent it from moving. I think your suitcase didn’t cause the marks here. Mention it to the homeowner at an opportune time; don’t loose sleep over this.

joelq123

That looks like it came from tape (pre-existing) though not residue and instead the tape pulled the poly layer up. I have similar damage on my floors caused when painters I hired pulled up their taped-down drop cloth and pulled up the poly layer . That said, how would one go about fixing this?

SirIsaacGnuton

Matching a floor finish is extremely difficult with a floo

Psych0matt

Ah yes, the floo

SirIsaacGnuton

Surprising that tape pulled up polyurethane. Was the floor sanded before the poly or was it applied over another finish?

Psych0matt

I’m guessing it’s not that it pulled it up/off, but more likely discolored it

DrDingus86

That’s from tape.

Adeep187

I think that was there before, like there was tape on there for a while.

PSiggS

Guys this is someone else’s house, be respectful. OP you should just be honest about it with the homeowners even though it’s a hard conversation. If it was actually your fault and requires repair, then offer to pay for it. If it was preexisting damage and they come back to a floor that is different or not repaired the way they want, they might take issue. Things happen, even if it ends up being from your suitcase, don’t be hard on yourself!

mikhv09

Nothing dont touch it, you have nothing to do with it! You weren't the cause! As others have stated its from tape at one point being left on for way to long.

rainbowalreadytaken

Lots of bad advice on here!

HopefulCat3558

From Reddit? Nah, can’t be.

StrengthDazzling8922

That is tape damage not from a suitcase.

DjHEWGE

I think you should be more worried about the razer blades you have attached to the bottom of your suitcase.

Ex0skeletr0n

Yeah looks like tape. Nonetheless, if you wanna fix it. Get an orange peel and rub it on the scuff marks. Or something g like rejuvenate from home depot for hardwood floors.

Never_Been_Missed

I had these exact floor boards for a decade. Quite sure you didn't do this with a suitcase.

--Unxpekted--

Hardwood floor guy here. Don’t do anything, talk to the owners, it’s likely existing damage. Don’t use any tips you read here. Lots of bad information that can definitely make the problem worse. Hope you see this.

Pikepv

Your suitcase would need to have sandpaper on it plus a motor.

i_know_tofu

That appears to be pre-existing damage. I wouldn't worry about it.

TheKingOfDub

This exact thing happened to our floor when well-meaning contractors taped protection down during work and then removed it. You probably didn’t do that. If a suitcase did that, the floor is a crap floor

Mr_Pilgor

Does your suitcase have tape for wheels with the sticky side out?

[deleted]

Looks like tape residue - but I've fixed scuffs by rubbing Walnuts on them

lefthandrighty

It looks to me like someone left tape on the floor a little too long and peeled it up along with the finish. I’d ask the home owners if it was already like that. If not and you’re responsible, pay for the repairs.

PennyFleck333

I agree, you didn't do it

Couch4now

Go buy some walnuts. Crack them and rub the nut pod (edible) part into the floor.

[deleted]

Rub a little olive oil on it.

LilyGaming

Looks like tape residue

Skiboy712

Doesn’t look like a suitcase did that.

supah_

Vegetable oil the spots and they won’t know right away.

Strong_Coffee8417

As soon as the owners return, simply sit them down & make them a nice cup of Goo Gone!

tsengf

Are you sure you caused this with a suitcase? Im trying to understand how a suitcase can do this.

welding-guy

just rub a spot with olive oil, if it is tape then it will come off. If it is a scratch, it will blend in to the surrounds. If what I said damages the floor, you shouldn't do everything the internet tells you to do :)

the666thviking

My job is literally fixing hardwood floors. That is old damage, likely(as mentioned) from tape on the floor. Don't do anything to it. It could be tape residue, but it could also be that the tape lifted the finish(this is what it looks like to me). If you actually think your suitcase did this, then inspect your suitcase for the part that actually did it. If you can't identify a source, that's further proof

Snooze_U_Lose

Rub a bit of Olive Oil in to it. Done.

Xrystian90

Rub a walnut over it

bobbywaz

this guy isn't kidding, this would probably work, also, pre-existing damage

Holdthedoor949

Orange oil should fix the problem.

evilpercy

Was there ever a area rug there? Could be from anti slip tape.

willwar63

If it's not actually residue as has been suggested this may work. [https://www.homedepot.com/p/Howard-Restor-A-Finish-16-oz-Walnut-RF4016/100199071](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Howard-Restor-A-Finish-16-oz-Walnut-RF4016/100199071) Just be aware that there are different shades available. There's another product called Old English, that may work as well. [https://www.lowes.com/pd/Old-English-8-fl-oz-Wood-Furniture-Scratch-Cover/3180277](https://www.lowes.com/pd/Old-English-8-fl-oz-Wood-Furniture-Scratch-Cover/3180277) Apply it in an inconspicuous place first to make sure it matches.

ouch82

If your disposing chopped body parts, dont use a suitcase. Get a travel bag with wheels, that will save your floor from scratches.

megans48

Rubbing walnuts over scuffs on wood works a treat.

RabbitsAteMySnowpeas

This is easy to conceal: just spill a gallon of paint on the floor “accidentally”. Nobody will even worry about the scuff at that point!

[deleted]

You can try getting a walnut and rubbing that across the scuff. The walnut will go into the gap and take on some colour too sometimes Other thing to try is a little bit of wd40 put a little on a cloth and rub it in a bit just try a small area of the scuff firt

lurkersforlife

https://www.acehardware.com/departments/paint-and-supplies/patch-and-repair/wood-filler/1604263?store=00698&gbraid=0AAAAADtqLJFyYm9Aaj4QR3xZz0pf0pyCW&gclid=Cj0KCQjw4s-kBhDqARIsAN-ipH1JDtoLBt2f3ZPDklrBoOf1cBc0JU9ZNYoilcUY7VzwXrSYbVWkRY8aAgHCEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds This stuff works fantastic on my floors

DiamondExternal2922

It will polish away

Red_Ja

Sounds stupid, but if you rub it with a tennis ball for a bit, it should buff out. Little elbow grease, and you're good

nivekamals

If the light part is raw now, you can rub it with a walnut or equivalent, or try a small spot with cooking oil and see how that works

[deleted]

I know it sounds silly but it works in a lot of instances - try running a walnut on those areas. Start in a small area and see how it goes. Do it before buying any stains or anything

whogivesashart

I wouldn't worry about it. That is a poorly laid floor.

Dean-KS

Get a small container of pure Tung oil, not tung oil finish. Apply a small amount, wait 10 minutes, thoroughly wipe off, do not get tempted to leave a film of oil. Reapply later as needed. You are building up a finish inside the wood, not on top of the wood. The oil is pleasant on your skin. This can be used on furnace to restore furniture finishes.

ConfectionDiligent71

Get some walnuts and rub on it, the oil comes out blends it in, I do under our bench seating once a year to get rid of the scratches and you cannot tell

IPeeNightly

I’d say, at least one wheel was locked up and the wheel dragged on the floor causing the scuff. Probably easy to fix though.

Kristen242

Just don't drink all the good wine!

Longjumping_Pitch168

Try a green scrubie,,

riggengan

Walnut oil

Salt_Bus2528

Spit on it and scrub with a paper towel. Looks like sticky tape. Just don't use a lung butter loogie. Clean spit.

NewMorningSwimmer

Gross. Funny. But gross. Actually it's pretty funny.

ImOutOfNamesNow

Get naphtha , it shouldn’t affect any finish too much unlesss water borne I assume

babygrapes-oo

Lol did the paint strip off stained hardwood floors 😂

[deleted]

Can Try Nu Finish, but I doubt you did that

ShotBRAKER

That looks like the floor at apartment in Charleston

Stoned42069

You are screwed. Complete sant and refinish. Let the owner know and figure it out. Don’t listen to any of the bs solutions people provide.

toolsavvy

That can't be suitcase damage. Looks like someone put a strong tape down the rip it up taking varnish with it. It also looks like it's been there for some time, not a fresh damage.

TotalRuler1

shitty floor is so dirty I doubt they will notice

TallantedGuy

Is it possible it was there before and you just didn’t realize it?

rearheat

Paint?

be_matthew

Thats not from a suitcase

gable_game

Looks like the stain and lacquer came off. Matching the stain will be difficult. If you can get the same stain, it won't match because the existing stain is faded/weathered. Once you get the color delt with , you can buy a small rattle can of lacquer and spray the section you need.

ExhaledChloroform

Floor is fake hardwood. Had a contractor come in to do some renos one time.. layed some of that green painters tape down on it... let me tell you, when they pulled up the tape it looked 100x worst than that scuff mark. I was told that its not worth fixing. Im sure your scuff marks aren't the only ones there.

MudInternational5938

If you've done that with a suitcase.... There is something seriously wrong with that floor!! It definitely should be able to take a suitcase... I currently have a pile of branches on my timber floor in my house and it doesn't damage anything. So yeah weird.

BreedingLilax

Just say you gave the floor racing stripes for a touch of style 😎

Large_Technician_492

You have to remove all of the flooring. Call a general contractor, they should be able to fix it quickly and cheap.

[deleted]

Try a damp paper towel with water…

steeltoedneckbeard

I dont think anything can be done, sorry.

shadow125

Try rubbing a little cooking oil into it…

OmiSC

Lemme another voice to scream into the void that I doubt you had anything to do with this.

DevinH83

Let the owners know. They’ll know how to clean/fix their own floor better than anyone here.

deepie1976

First of all try dish soap neat. No water. Then try solvents

e_hota

Your suitcase didn’t do that, it was already there. Leave it alone.

redshiftquasars

WD40

GravyShitsPants

Put a rug over it

MaximumTrip

Run

outcome--independent

This is damage from pulling up tape. A thin layer of would is likely gone. Source: did this to my floors.

johny_earsack

Relax. You didn't do that. Echoing the 100 other people here who immediately identified that as tape.

FewLeopard7026

Easy fix! Grab a belt sander & use a rough sand belt, lock the trigger & drop it on the floor then walk away. It works like a Roomba 😀

retrorays

It's a wood floor - not a big deal. Ultimately can be waxed, stained, or worst-case sanded. You should see my wood floor - yeesh way worse than this.

banxy85

Doesn't look like a suitcase did that. Also anything you try is gonna make it worse.

sarrcasshole

grab a few walnuts!! rub the walnut over those spots with some absolute gusto and the oils from the walnut will hide those scuffs

Valerian_BrainSlug42

It’s rurnt’ lol

Existential_Fatalist

Own up to it. In this instance honesty is the best policy.

fl4m

Etch a maze into the floor with a soldering iron to disguise your accidental scuff marks. Maybe then they won't even notice 🤷🏻‍♂️

iamzvonko

I'm no expert, but here's my suggestion. Use some water with Dawn dishwashing liquid to rub out any sticky residue. I'm sure other dishwashing liquids will work as well. Dawn is just my preferred one. After that, try this trick I just found out about on another subreddit: Shell a walnut and use the "meat" (I don't know the correct term for the actual nut without a shell) and rub it over the scratched parts. When I first saw that tip I thought "BS" but it really works amazingly well.

adale_50

That's old damage. I can see the grain raising up with age. You're safe.

GlobeTrottingJ

I'd just wipe some danish oil in there, leave it to soak in for a couple of mins then completely wipe away with a clean cloth. Won't be perfect but should stop the mark being so white. Plus it's an oak floor, marks add to the character!

GermaneRiposte101

rub it with walnuts

FatFaceFaster

No way a suitcase did that. Was there before you came along you can tell by the fact that the wood is dirty. You’re in the clear OP

gherkin101

Rub a walnut on it!

ReaperManX15

Take a chestnut and rub it on the scuffs.

Birdbraned

Try a walnut?

NoYinhg

Is your suitcase filled with lead?

GlitteringRelease77

Might be able to make it better with some Bona floor cleaner. It’s like a mild varnish and cleaner in one.

puaka

Rub some walnut on it.

amwajguy

You didn’t do that.

[deleted]

I'd be willing to bet that rubbing in some mineral oil will fix that. Just do a tiny area to see how much it darkens the wood, but my guess is that it will barely be visible.

David_Lavid

Take a walnut to it

Haunting-Affect-5956

That wasn't a suitcase.. someone put tape on the floor and the tape pulled the shellac off the floor.

jhoover58

Highly likely tape did that damage. I can’t see the walls but I suspect the tape aligns well to the wall on one side. I have multiple rentals that have taken beatings from renters that don’t care and the damage is more gouging and inconsistent. No perfect angles like is shown in the picture.

sled55

I would just try rubbing a little olive oil on it and see if that gets rid of whatever it is.

yousew_youreap

Rubbing alcohol 91% , will remove tape residue Without harming the finish Painter >30yrs and I've never seen alcohol even dull a finish

Legitimate_Pudding49

Get some walnuts and rub one onto the mark… then give it a rub with a soft cloth. It won’t fix it but it will be much less noticeable!

Creative_Dragonfly_5

I would try a little Howard brand Feed-N-Wax. It might not totally restore it to prior appearance but could disguise it without having to do a lot of work. But be cautious as a little goes a long way especially on a floor since you don't want to make it slippery. I've used it on: • a wood table where the finish was dulled/damaged by a hot dish, • very old (antique) furniture that list its luster, • wood kitchen cabinets (circa 1986) that dried out from age/exposure, • scuffed spots on my older laminate "wood" floor, • and even newer composite wood and laminated wood furniture.

GrandExercise3

That is not from a suitcase

tammytaxidermy

If it’s glue, try rubbing alcohol, if it’s scuffs there’s a product called restore a finish that’ll fix it.

Belownatural2023

All I can think of is you trying to fix it like Ferris bueller's Day off and it turning out to be a HUGE disaster LOL there's a lot of good advice in here but that shouldn't have happened with just a suitcase I agree ...and don't try taking miles off their car by putting it into reverse just a little tip 😆😆 ✌️

TehHipPistal

Try to scrape whatever you can off it with a credit card, buy some polyurethane floor coating and just touch that spot up with a tiny amount and a paint brush, if you get it close no one will know.

utopia44

Literally say nothing. Your probably paranoid, most likely there before, and he/she/they probably won’t even notice

minionsweb

That was likely already that way. Can't imagine how your suitcase could possibly cause that.

[deleted]

Ask the owners if it was there already. You may be panicking for nothing

Lisa_Frankenstein_

I don’t think you did that, it was probably already there. That doesn’t look like it’s from a suitcase

[deleted]

Rub a walnut over it.

Equivalent-Read-4521

Doesn't look like it was made by a suitcase.

[deleted]

Did you drag it?

Exhales_Deeply

Rub a wee bit of mineral oil into it. Try a small spot first.

elmarcos84

Rub your sole of your shoe over it and it will go

Vigothedudepathian

Yeah def looks like tape. If that's manufactured plank you may be sol. Best bet may be restoral or a valethane pen. Honestly as bad as that floor looks I wouldn't worry.

CaptKimi57

I would take some minwax golden oak stain and put a bit on a clean soft cloth. Try rubbing it over the areas with the Damage. Wipe it up as much as possible. If needed repeat in 24 hrs. That should really help a lot.

Potential-Blueberry5

That's tape damage

LolDVP

I agree with others. Looks like tape residue. Me and my colleagues spent an hour scraping it off the 4th floor hardwood in London science museum because we stuck down a floor covering

Belalagny

Apparently if you take a walnut and rub it over the area it has a natural stain in it…test a very small area 👍🏼

Belalagny

….or you could explain to your friends and say you will pay for the repair of that area!

xssmontgox

You 100% didn’t cause this

Runawaygeek500

Use a walnut and gently rub it, try it on a hidden patch first if possible

arran0394

Set it on fire then you don't have to worry about it anymore....

5thWorldFarm

Try rubbing the inside of a walnut or almond on it.
