Yeah, all countries have pretty restricting laws on sales and shipment of alcohol.
You're however free to try to send it through the royal mail. It's legal if under 24° ABV.
And if it's unlabelled, I doubt they'd open and test it to check. At worst, they'll dispose of it.

it's rum, it'll be more like 40% or so I should think. The post office won't take alcohol at all, and nowhere will take spirits unless I'm a company basically.
It's looking like I'll have to give it to the neighbours or something. :/
edit: it's also too heavy for the post office to take, they have a 2kg limit
Is it possible to buy it from an online shop and get it delivered to them in France? Usually that's the easiest way to send commodities internationally because the vendors have procedures in place to deal with customs, etc.
They will, customs tend to open packages semi-randomly to make sure you're not passing through anything that's not allowed and/or you're paying the right fees.
Yeah you have to fill out details on the labels etc, and there are scary warnings about telling the truth. I sent books to Russia recently and got interrogated by the post office staff because they obviously didn't believe anyone would send a parcel of nothing but books all that way at such expense.
It's already a big package and we're talking about £25 to send it just by its size and weight. It gets really difficult and expensive to send large packages in general. It's too big for the post office to take even if it wasn't alcohol. Package weighs 3kg and their limit is 2kg.

The only solution that comes to mind is that you're gonna have to drink it for him.
Can't you like hide it in a bigger package with something else ? its not like they're gonna open it to check
