FudouKamui, a student from China’s Xi’an Academy of Fine Art created this vending machine that drops delicate china from its racks onto an unpadded shelf, shattering them on impact. The name of the installation translates to “This Is the Proof of Our Stupidity.” Also, each plate has a different price despite being identical.
I lived in Japan for a few years and there's as many interesting unique rituals as temples. One of my favorites that I stumbled upon is a temple on a mountain facing a cliff. You can buy a ceramic plate, have a shrine maiden or monk write something on it in fine Japanese calligraphy, then hurl it off the cliff. I think you get bonus (spiritual) points if you hit the special rock that's down there. My Japanese wasn't good enough to figure out what type of things they're writing on these plates, but I'd bet it's things like "my ex husband and his new girlfriend". Lol
But since it is no longer working as intended it's now again a showcase of stupidity. Creating an infinite loop of stupidity. Or schrodinger's stupidity. Idk I'm not a philosopher.
Reminds me of politicians. You donate to their campaign and vote (press a button) to get one, and then they shatter your expectations as they fall in line with the ones that have gone before them.
This piece is like that "hurr durr" meme made into art.
A person makes something incredibly stupid, then says "behold, this proves our stupidity", then people see it and say "well, that is stupid." And the artist is like "ha those guys thought I was so stupid."
Feels like a strawman argument made into art. There are plenty of examples of how stupid humans are. Making a vending machine that smashes plates and using it as an example of human stupidity is the same as those comic strips with examples of things that would never happen in real life.
If the machine existed before and they just stuck an art gallery style label on it it would have been clever.
That machine isn't made for vending plates. It's for stress relief, it vends a small dose of chaos and destruction.
I'd go broke if I ever encountered this machine in real life.
i'm waiting for Super Nintendo World theme park to do a Legend of Zelda World. or at least Hyrule Castle. they could have a room with cheap ceramic pots that you smash. it would be great stress relief for the hectic environment that is a theme park.
You’re vastly underestimating how many pots someone can break in a minute. I would be like supermarket sweeps without the cart for 30 second and then switch to chucking them against the wall for 30 seconds. 100 pots easy
It would even advertise itself, if you walk by a place and hear people screaming "HYAAAA!" followed by the sound of smashing pottery, it's going tog et your attention.
There are real life rage rooms where you can vent...
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rage_room
We did this with some friends.
1 to 5 people per hour, 125$ and a room filled with smashables, glas, tv's computers and furniture.
Axes, bats and hammers in all sorts can be chosen, and let hell loose on everything.
They do advise NOT to hit the other persons in the room, but if you do, they're not liable for damages ;)
Sure but if you encounter this on a college campus or office building, if you had the option to smash the plate yourself, where exactly would you go do that without calling attention to yourself
In case the video loop doesn’t play (doesn’t on my device), here is the gif version:

It is.

I like that too. I like the food to be the focal point so I bought white. One set of kids took them when they got their own place. I
was going to just get the same ones but I found and liked their stoneware. I didn’t realize it wasn’t the same unbreakable corelle so it’s all chipped and several pieces have broken. In a minute, I’m just going back and I’ll get rid of the stoneware. Very disappointed.
In the words of a certain guy asking you to sign a petition
“What fuckin’ moron designed this?”
Wouldn’t be surprised if this is some art piece or social commentary
If those are Corelle dishes 99% of the time they'll survive the drop.
That 1% though, lookout, it sounds like a gun going off and pieces get thrown everywhere!!
They do have those vending machines with the arm on the window that goes up and down to catch the vended item and deliver it safely to the slot, so it doesn't have to do any falling. This machine does not appear to have one, though.
Depending on price and my current mood, I would absolutely pay to watch plates smash in this controlled environment.
I'd I could pay extra to put a name on the plate, I would.
After cleaning up broken plate at intermission for every show and rehearsal during our community theatre’s production of Fiddler on the Roof, this made me laugh way too hard.
If I had a penny for how many times I've been on the go - seen a vending machine - and thought, oh dang I wish this was stocked with porcelain dishes....
Dang, that sounds like a comedy of errors waiting to happen. Imagine waiting for your plate, all excited for your meal, and then *crash*—it's like the grand finale of a slapstick movie. They need to fix that pronto before they end up with a mountain of broken plates and disappointed customers!
My community college had a machine that had those old Sobe teas in the glass bottles up top. People used to pay $1.50 to buy one just so they’d smash at the bottom. Instead of correcting that the school put up a sign “machine full of broken glass please be careful” or something like that.
many explanations. Could be one of those machines with a moving arm. Could be plastic plates. Machine could have a cushioned bottom. Could also not be a vending machine at all, but a sanitizer where the door opens like a fridge with clean plates.
This is not a “dropping” style vending machine but a “retrieval” style machine.
Upon payment, a motorised tray from the bottom is lifted up to the level of the item to be dispensed, which is then gently pushed on the tray. The tray then makes the way back down for the item to be collected.
You can see the tray in the picture which is at the level of the empty bottom shelf, above the collection vent.
I have a similar machine in my office cafeteria which dispenses sandwiches, salads, beverages and such.
Lol its not. It literally launches the plate straight out the bottom. I believe its an art piece. Also, this has been reposted many times. https://www.reddit.com/r/TikTokCringe/s/maDJuWGT4G
Always fake demand...
People like fomo ...
Some natural understanding that a half empty shelf has a better product then a full.
Also in a restaurant, the amount of people choosing a uncleaned table before the clean one is astonishing.

Art installation?

If the top shelf has higher prices for a slightly better smash I'm totally happy paying for that.
This is the male gaze
Are they ceramic plates, maybe this is the male glaze
Do not go around asking about the male glaze
If you send me your address I can mail you male glaze
I’ve got a whole shoebox full
Is FudouKamui actually a cat masquerading as a human art student?
Shhh. You’ll give them away!
Psspssspss
I'd say it was a smashing success.
It shattered my expectations.
These really cracked me up.
Thanks Nigel!
That's what I thought when I saw it, like so many posts it's meant to be a statement that's completely ignored by the folks making the posts.
I lived in Japan for a few years and there's as many interesting unique rituals as temples. One of my favorites that I stumbled upon is a temple on a mountain facing a cliff. My Japanese wasn't good enough to figure out what type of things they're writing on these plates, but I'd bet it's things like "my ex husband and his new girlfriend". Lol
They also have a thing of repaired pottery called kintsugi. It’s actually quite interesting and cool.
Small problem then. The machine is functioning perfectly as intended, thus it is no longer a showcase of stupidity.
But since it is no longer working as intended it's now again a showcase of stupidity. Creating an infinite loop of stupidity. Or schrodinger's stupidity. Idk I'm not a philosopher.
Oh that's lovely. Showing this to my fiance that thinks all modern art is dumb
Reminds me of politicians. You donate to their campaign and vote (press a button) to get one, and then they shatter your expectations as they fall in line with the ones that have gone before them.

That's perfect for a german "Polterabend".
"Our stupidity" I didn't make this thing...I really want to buy a plate though.

I believe it's a commentary on the wastefulness and shortsightedness of single use containers.
It's nice cause it's open to interpretation
Yes yes. Quite profound
There's what looks like a broom leaned up against the machine on the right side of the photo, so I'd say yeah.
Yes
Greek culture education tool. As the plates shatter you hear a recorded voice shout "Opa!" from a concealed speaker.
Made me think of that shredding stunt Banksy pulled
Even if it weren't: have ppl never heard of plastic? 🤷♀️
That machine isn't made for vending plates. It's for stress relief, it vends a small dose of chaos and destruction. I'd go broke if I ever encountered this machine in real life.

$10, 1 minute, find the red rupee for a prize!
You’re vastly underestimating how many pots someone can break in a minute. I would be like supermarket sweeps without the cart for 30 second and then switch to chucking them against the wall for 30 seconds. 100 pots easy
exactly!
It would even advertise itself, if you walk by a place and hear people screaming "HYAAAA!" followed by the sound of smashing pottery, it's going tog et your attention.
This is universal studios we’re talking about. $50, 1 pot, random plastic rupee in each one with rare colors They would sell like hotcakes

When your time is up, the loud speaker yells, "Hey! Listen."
I'd argue that buying a plate to smash is way more cathartic than watching it smash itself...
Sure but if you encounter this on a college campus or office building, if you had the option to smash the plate yourself, where exactly would you go do that without calling attention to yourself
Outside the first door I can find, then walk like 10 feet away from the door I’d just make sure I can clean it up first
Yes, because a plate crashing inside a vending machine is going to fly under the radar...
In case the video loop doesn’t play (doesn’t on my device), here is the gif version: https://imgur.com/not-sure-if-something-is-going-wrong-here-nFQ4lBS
It vrnds small doses of chaos and destruction. Is lokey poetic.
Thanks for the appreciation
A solar powered version that collects the smashed bits and slowly melts the material into new plates and restocks itself
if its $1 this would stop me dead in my tracks, no way I could resist
Came here to say this. Vending machine owner would probably make a lot of money, as long as they have a way to continually clean out the broken bits.
https://www.reddit.com/r/funny/s/MxfKPuJyjx As this other commentator said above: each plate is both identical and has a different price.
The rageroom nearby is asking 125€ for 102 objects. You'll get one hour. (Or you take 4 friend, it's up to 5 for the hour)
What if that was a machine that helps you pop bubble wrap? Would you pay to watch the machine or DIY?
Opa!
I came here to say “Made In Greece”
I think more of "made in japan" looks a bit like a gacha Game, maybe you get lucky and it won't break XD
$20 per Opa
***"OPA!"*** ^(shoving in more drachmas...)***"OPA!"*** ^(shoving in more drachmas...)***"OPA!"*** ^(shoving in more drachmas...)
Scrolled to find this comment , also, happy cake day!
I am not happy 😔
Zeibekiko whilst the plates are coming down.
That's fairly clearly intentional.
I figured this was an art installation

The last part is awesome
Isn’t this an art installation? [yup. it is.](https://www.core77.com/posts/110237/Art-Students-Brilliant-Evidence-of-Our-Idiocy-Vending-Machine)
Almost like it’s an obvious art piece
Psh not if it were corelle
I was thinking this would be a good ad. Maybe even better since it started as an art piece, would drum up some extra attention.
I bought Corelle because we had kids. Out of a set of 8, we’ve broken one plate and a bowl. My family calls them jail dishes.
I like that they are light
I like that too. I like the food to be the focal point so I bought white. One set of kids took them when they got their own place. I was going to just get the same ones but I found and liked their stoneware. I didn’t realize it wasn’t the same unbreakable corelle so it’s all chipped and several pieces have broken. What kind of AI subject line is this for a near decades old video??
Why are the plates soo cute
Plate is doing the 👉🍽️👈
It's a vending machine for cats. They like pushing things off shelves.
Is this supposed to be a video?
This perfect for all those times on the go when I just need to grab a quick plate of nothing.
In the words of a certain guy asking you to sign a petition “What fuckin’ moron designed this?” Wouldn’t be surprised if this is some art piece or social commentary
This looks like one of those funny useless inventions like waterproof tea bags, or inflatable dart boards.
Not all plates are made of ceramic
I like where your head is at. Make it a gambling opportunity. Some break satisfyingly. Others are identical plastic disappointments.
Perfect!
If those are Corelle dishes 99% of the time they'll survive the drop. That 1% though, lookout, it sounds like a gun going off and pieces get thrown everywhere!!
/r/im14andthisisdeep
Not a bug, that’s the feature.
Opa!
Demonstration please?
It's not a plate vending machine. It's a starter purchase and a little encouragement to get your Kintsugi hobby going.
I hate you for not having a video of this. Bad.
This would be huge in Greece.
I have seen newer vending machines that raise the floor up to gently catch glass bottles. I realize that this one is an art piece but still.
Its a greek vending machine.
Zorba the greek music intensifies.
OPA!
"Some assembly required"
Anger machine
That is the whole point…. You are paying to smash a plate.
Why didnt you post the video but just a photo?
It’s there for Greek weddings.
I made a meme with this a couple of years ago : https://i.imgur.com/wYz2JdU.gifv
They do have those vending machines with the arm on the window that goes up and down to catch the vended item and deliver it safely to the slot, so it doesn't have to do any falling. This machine does not appear to have one, though.
No Shit Sherlock !
*pushes all the buttons*
*not mine* J3
Windex!!!
Depending on price and my current mood, I would absolutely pay to watch plates smash in this controlled environment. I'd I could pay extra to put a name on the plate, I would.
That’s a metaphor!!!!!!! -Tracy Jordan
It's designed for when a Greek wedding needs to economise on the cleaning budget.
If the plates were Corelle then you get to keep your saucer dish!
how about plastic plates
After cleaning up broken plate at intermission for every show and rehearsal during our community theatre’s production of Fiddler on the Roof, this made me laugh way too hard.
They look like Corelle plates though. Good luck breaking those.
Aaht.
That would make a cool hutch.
If I had a penny for how many times I've been on the go - seen a vending machine - and thought, oh dang I wish this was stocked with porcelain dishes....
Needs a "No Refunds" sticker.
I think I saw this in action in an Adele music video....
Capitalism at its finest, now go fuck off.
Mechagreek
It’s an art installation
That's not a good idea
how to dispense without breaking?
Looks like something from Meow Wolf.
Vending machines in Greece be like:
Dang, that sounds like a comedy of errors waiting to happen. Imagine waiting for your plate, all excited for your meal, and then *crash*—it's like the grand finale of a slapstick movie. They need to fix that pronto before they end up with a mountain of broken plates and disappointed customers!
Greece?
This post would have been so much funnier if OP didn't explain it in the title.
I’d fill it with unbreakable plates
Must be in Greece.
A Greek applause machine, then? (The Greek people are known for throwing dishes to show appreciation for performers.)
Melanine....
It’s Greek
Why is it a great idea? Even if they didn't smash, I've never needed a plate from a vending machine..and I never will.
Schrödinger's device
Maybe it’s a plate dispenser for a Greek wedding?
They are plastic.
they look happy at least
love how the available space in the machine isn‘t fully utilized to ensure that even the bottom row smashes on impact
Mazel tov!
Maybe it's a plate smashing machine.
My community college had a machine that had those old Sobe teas in the glass bottles up top. People used to pay $1.50 to buy one just so they’d smash at the bottom. Instead of correcting that the school put up a sign “machine full of broken glass please be careful” or something like that.
oddlysatifying?
those plates look happy
A foam lining solves the problem. The plate lands safely and you can take it
This is art… Apparently.
A great idea for what, exactly?
It’s not a great idea in general
Opa!
Imagine one of them getting stuck
Its not plate dispenser, its plate piece dispenser
Ate the onion
Schrodinger's vending machine!
The wires holding in the plates look so happy!!!
But the plates are happy!
What makes it a great idea?
Opa!
This must be a Greek vending machine! OPA!
Thanks for explaining the joke in the title. It really added to the humor!
Therapeutic.
many explanations. Could be one of those machines with a moving arm. Could be plastic plates. Machine could have a cushioned bottom. Could also not be a vending machine at all, but a sanitizer where the door opens like a fridge with clean plates.
art
All those explanations and still not the right one!
sure I guess it's "art"
You don't have to guess. It simply is that.
sure the first thing you thought of when you saw this photo is art. without googling.
Yes actually. It would be silly assuming it was anything else.
This is not a “dropping” style vending machine but a “retrieval” style machine. I want to do this just and set up a camera just to watch people be stupid.
That's stupid. I love it!
The shrodinger vending machine
Plot twist: they’re acrylic
I need to see video. I'd think there would be broken plates in the bottom if this were true.
Finally, a gotcha game I can get behind.
This is in Greece
But consider this… two slots are empty. 🤨
Always fake demand... People like fomo ... Some natural understanding that a half empty shelf has a better product then a full. Also in a restaurant, the amount of people choosing a uncleaned table before the clean one is astonishing.
It’s not a great idea at all. Who would ever need a plate from a vending machine.
