What? Steam used to be incredibly restrictive of the games on their store. Even when they opened it up more it took a long time before they allowed explicit titles
It's pretty much a daily bingo hit for this sub
*"I quit my job to pursue my pas--"*
**WE GET IT!!**
People just know that sympathy titles get more views and stir more buzz than some no name no body dropping mid ass game footage that one one will be interested in once it drops
The thing always missing from these posts is the context. I'd love to quit my job to pursue my dream too but I don't want to lose my house and have my wife divorce me to probably make less money than I do with my day job anyway if I were to succeed.
Everyone is so cynical. Maybe they did quit their job to make games and even if the footage is mid it’s still cool that there are people out there pursuing their passion and willing to show the rest of the world.
I think it’s more the fact that quitting your job to work on a passion project is pretty dumb and irresponsible. So I think it’s totally fair to point out that quitting a job to make video games isn’t inspiring at all and shouldn’t be encouraged or even praised because everyone who does this (with a few exceptions) are gonna end up worse off and unsuccessful.
I would love to have the financial stability to pursue ANYTHING close to this. Most of us live less then paycheck to paycheck. Without both my wife and I working together we don't have a roof. And mostly no food.
I've been fighting for disability for years. And can't get it. I can barely walk sometimes. But two different states say I'm not disabled and their response was literally to get a desk job. That's what they said. News flash it's gout. I let it get out of control in my early 20s. And my right hand is being affected now.
It’s for pity likes. People see this mediocre clip and instead of saying it looks meh or ignoring it they feel the need to be supportive of this person that is struggling.
I mean, the graphics are meh but that combat looks really cool to me?
It's also not for pity likes, it's clearly a marketing tactic meant to get some exposure and build a player/fan base, and there's nothing really wrong with that.
I'd much rather support an individual or small company making something they think is cool as fuck than buy Call of Duty 87.5
Acting like your only options are mass produced shovel-ware or half baked indie projects that will never finish really ignores a massive portion of the market.
I've noticed a lot of people on here over the past few years focusing solely on tearing down whatever is posted. There isn't much discussion in the top-level comments, just roasting.
It's a constant circlejerk of Is it staged? Is it begging? Is it AI?
These guys think theyre Sherlock Holmes uncovering crimes, meanwhile, a fifth of their frontpage is made up of Russian trolls going unnoticed, doing *actual* damage.
>I've noticed a lot of people on here over the past few years focusing solely on tearing down whatever is posted.
Ideally what you'd notice is that the exact same tactics are used for marketing mediocre shit and karma farming in these places.
I really hope that many people don't actually quit their job for small indie games. Let's say someone actually quit a $50k IT job to build a game in two years. Then you got steam taking 1/3 of your revenue, the engine like Unity or UE will take revenue parts, you need licenses for all tools you worked with for audio, models textures, some bought assetts, spend money of advetisement space, etc. And at which price point can you sell a small indie game like that, maybe $15? Let's just assume you actually make it work to get $8 out of every sale, then you need to sell 12,500 copies to break even with the previous job.
Sorry to say that but 99% of new indie release on steam will just sit there with maybe 2 or 3 digit sold copies with who knows how many returns. Every single day some small games release with someone hoping it might became viral. Most just don't. Unless you want to have releasing your own game on a resume to get a job in the videogame industry it's just a really bad move financially. I really hope most people who quit their job for a game don't do that on loans but on savings they can spare.
Sorry if that came off very negative, I wish everyone the best with their own games. I hope you find a good playerbase that loves your game
And add that you decided to rent out an expensive office in the middle of the city, plus just bought 50k of office and computer hardware so you have a "proper" company setup.
This is almost a verbatim reposted comment from right this thread (!?). I was confused since it doesn't quite make sense in this context, but it does as a top level comment further down - the order text is reordered though.
Good question! I'm experimenting between two alternatives, which do you think?
1. Slow-mo gets activated for both players when one activates it. Easy solution but potentially frustrating.
2. Slow-mo gets activated if both players activate it. This would allow for more planned plays, but it gets less reactional.
I really miss that era of online gaming. Load up some insane anime skin and join a public lobby with no score limit, accomplish absolutely nothing but have a fucking good time doing it
I like to describe that little era as "imagination-only." Everyone was just cranking out mods/games that existed as fun toys based around one or two really cool ideas. Easily digested and repeated.
a bunch of really good games came out of these mods too. day of defeat. team fortress. cs obviously. vampire slayer! damn, i wish i had one of these games for the new cs 2 engine.
That was my first thought seeing this. Loved that mod.
Confession time: I hosted a server where I had the universal slowdown binded so whereas others needed pickups, I could use it at will. When people questioned how I was doing so well, I just pointed to the 0 ping, which certainly didn't hurt, either.
I miss the Specialists so god damn much. Amazing maps, great weapons, and the kungfu was actually amazing. Really wish they'd revamp the mod for HL2 or something.
Hey there!
I was curious how Max Payne 3 solved this issue in it's multiplayer mode, and I think this solution actually makes a decent amount of sense.
Basically, when you start bullet time, you're activating a "chain".
Any character (be it NPC or player) that sees another character affected by bullet time is also caught by it.
https://assets.sbnation.com/assets/1029858/mp3_bullettime-3-1-1.jpg
I'm sure you've already considered this but in case you haven't, I believe Max Payne 3's online multiplayer had a bullet time system that would create a limited area around the player that was affected by bullet time. Of course, this idea has its problems in terms of how it fits your game design and how far apart your players will likely be, and it's probably a headache to code, but it might be worth thinking about! If that doesn't work, I think letting players freely use their own bullet time is the better option. I think it's most valuable as a reactionary option to get out of a tight situation. Especially if you plan on surprising your players with tough groups of enemies, being involuntarily slowed down for a bit is less frustrating than dying and having to go all the way back to a checkpoint imo
I really don't know how people can quit their job to do stuff like this and manage to pay rent, bills and get food. Savings can only take you so far. I have a job and even then I struggle sometimes.
You’d have to have a job that pays significantly more than your expenses and save for a while. Usually people who do this intelligently plan to cover 6 months to a year of expenses to basically replace their full time job hours with development hours and it works out for some but definitely not all
i loved that mod as a kid. set up in the matrix lobby -> go kung fu only -> get the upgrades so you jump insanely high -> disarm your opponents and murder them with their own weapons.
TOTAL OVERDOSE MENTIONED!!! 🗣️
But seriously, it was a short, but good Max Payne/GTA clone with Mexican B-movie vibes and awesome licensed music as soundtrack
I loved Total Overdose, one of the very few that i've finished in a few days after starting.
I also got heavy total overdose vibes from the video, hopefully there's a multipier/combo system in this one too. :)
*edit*: watched again paying more attention to the UI, looks like there is! nice!
Ah, the gold from 2000s.
If anyone is having trouble remembering the names of the songs, it's:
Delinquent Habits - Return of the Tres (main menu): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG23rZifKgQ
Molotov - Karmara (combat, layered based on your performance): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiXYA1dacug
Been a while since I've seen one of these lame "I left everything behind and learned programming for 55 years to make my own game. My dream finally came trueeeeee" ads on this sub. Mods eating well tonight

My hands instantly cramped up by just reading that word.
"Animation Cancelling: The Game", more or less. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqb-tQVfuDs
Legitimately the dumbest thing I keep seeing on reddit again and again.
"I quit my job to work on this game...."
OK, and? If you sell your game for $10 each (I can't imagine this quality of game being much higher) and you made ~35k at your job, you'd have to sell 4550 units of your game on steam to make your yearly salary.
Unless it becomes a hit, it's absolutely stupid to quit a job to make a game. It's essentially gambling at that point.
And Indie Tony Hawk With Guns doesn't seem like it'll be a multi-thousand unit seller.
lol, every single time it's "I quit my job to make this game".
Brings updoots every time.
They fail to mention that they either have money in the bank, are provided for by someone else, or have received publishing money.
Guys... don't quit your jobs to make a game, unless you have adequate savings or a source of income. Posts like these always give the wrong impression.
Looks like 1000 other types of games I’ve seen.
I mean if you’re going to quit your job to make a game: why choose a genre that is plugged full? Unfortunately no one will hardly have ever played this.
How did you come to this decision, just wondering?
Like, did you already have a background in programming so it seemed achievable? Also how do you stay afloat while working on the game?
This is a very common dream, but it always seems like a death sentence to even try.
Been wondering if it's worth it since kickstarter exists and some indie devs make it work somehow.
I came here to say similar: reminds me so much of Wet.
Such a goofy, fun game with a banger of a soundtrack. Also, Eliza Dushku killed it in the VA department.
Hey, In Style looks really fun to play, and the retro vibes unexpectedly fits so well. Great job! :)
If you're still polishing your game, I'd suggest making the ammo bar a bit more visible, because (for example) as I can see for your shotgun it will only have a couple rounds until next reload. Maybe adding numbers or making the ammo bar a bit thicker?
Whatever you decide to do, keep it up the good work! You're doing great, mate.
Max Payne meets Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 meets Sunset Overdrive meets The Matrix. Looks like a lot of fun
(I gotta say after all that running and gunning that Sweet Chin Music at the end made me laugh)
This reminds me of the Action Half-Life mod back in the early 2000's where it was all about movie tropes, sliding while shooting, jump tricks and flair. Looks fun!
I just quit my job and bought a ps5. Have a great life y'all.
Step 2 profit
My profit is the money that i will not spend on alcohol by going out everyday like a goddamn lunatic
Maybe the real money is the friends we made in the bar
And this gun I found. Now gimme your money
A fuckin men
At this point quitting your job to make a video game is just a modern day quarter-life crisis.
Oh, I was supposed to make a video game? Oops.
You make more money opening a patreon and updating a half finished anime waifu porn "game" once every 6 months.
Yes, I too have noticed all the porn in the Steam store these days.
STEAM!? Like 40% of the games on the Switch E-Store are hentai dating sims
So that's why my son loves his Switch so much?
Gotta check that credit card statement
Credit card statement be like; *Steam Purchase - Fresh Woman*
You know what they say about snitches…
Bro I saw a list of hentai game titles on the switch once and I was cracking up it was hilarious.
These days? Man it’s been like that since the beginning lol
What? Steam used to be incredibly restrictive of the games on their store. Even when they opened it up more it took a long time before they allowed explicit titles
'Fresh Woman' is amazing tho
Yes you were! I made a game for my friends as a wedding gift. You are falling behind the 1/4 life crisis.
I'm going to do it at my 3/4 life crisis. Hopefully text adventures make a comeback.
Honestly I am surprised it hasn't bounced back, especially after the rise of the mechanical keyboards.

Man I wish I had the savings to pull that off.
Ahah I was thinking, I read like 6/7 other posts like this.
FYI! If you’re trying to promote a game on reddit make sure to include that you quit your job and am putting everything you own into it…..
there’s so many and it’s hard to keep up… This is why I’ve decided to quit my job and put everything I own into commenting on these posts
You are truly an hero
It's an old meme but checks out
Holds up spork
I need to find this courage!
I will buy THAT video game! Better quit commenting on those posts and put everything you have into making a video game about commenting on those posts
See this is why I just quit my job and got another job so that I could put everything into another job instead of the other job
This is why I quit making my video game and put everything I own into OPs old job
For real, so many times I've seen the same background context to those posts. Just two days ago, there was the exact same thing for a FPS.
it's probably somewhere on the internet in the list of 'lifehacks to get free publicity on reddit'
Yeah and that FPS that got posted, was posted 6 days prior by the same developer. To me, it comes off as begging for attention and sales
Can't hurt to mention that you also have kids, so not buying the game also negativly affects children.
I've got 5 kids to feed!
At least this isn't a side-scrolling pixel art roguelike
Metroidvania, pixelart, female protag. Fine... I'll play it.
ouch. i feel personally insulted. lmao.
I quit my job to pursue my dream of reading posts about people quitting their jobs!
At least they didn’t post in /r/nextfuckinglevel
"Quit"
And add that you decided to rent out an expensive office in the middle of the city, plus just bought 50k of office and computer hardware so you have a "proper" company setup.
How does the bullet-time work in co-OP? If one player triggers it does it activate for both? Looks interesting!
killing floor 2 had it. if one player had slomo from kill everyone got slomo
Yeah, killing floor did it nicely. It just got kind of annoying when it would happen frequently.
right! like skivian said just now overly dramatic reloads hahah i couldnt say it better
Lol, yeah. That is perfectly described. It's like.... Waaaaaaaaatch meeeeeeeeee REEEEEEEELOOOOOOAD! 🤣
and slowmo starts almost always when im low on mag, its like they did it on purpose :D
For sure, man. It definitely felt like a whimsical mechanic that triggered on X amount of reloads. 😅
What, you don't like watching your gun reload in slow-mo?
That game is so sick.

The way The Specialists mod for half life did it was create an area of effect bubble and I thought that worked pretty well
The Specialists was incredible. Some of the most fun I've had playing videogames in my entire life.
I really miss that era of online gaming. Load up some insane anime skin and join a public lobby with no score limit, accomplish absolutely nothing but have a fucking good time doing it

My favourite HL1 mod with Sven Coop. I wonder if people are still playing it.
Some friends and I still play it whenever we're all free. Still my favorite FPS experience, really want someone to make a worthy successor
Action half-life was good, but the Specialists absolutely cranked it.
That was my first thought seeing this. Loved that mod. Confession time: I hosted a server where I had the universal slowdown binded so whereas others needed pickups, I could use it at will. I fucking *knew* it.
Oh this is a great reference, see this is why I love feedback. Thanks!
Max Payne 3 multiplayer did it by slowing down everyone in line of sight
I was gonna say this reminded me of a much nicer looking specialists
I miss that game so much
lol i came into this thread looking to see if someone mentioned The Specialists. Goddamn that mod was the shit.

Double action boogaloo has it. It’s a pvp game
Your daily “I went all in to make this video game. Fellow redditors please help me win this gamble” post.
Meanwhile the guy probably still has his job and is doing this on the side trying to become the next lethal company

they do it by lying and not actually quitting their jobs.
I mean… atleast dudes making something. That deserves the respect it’s owed.
Some of that “Overwhelmingly Positive”-bait
[the specialists mod](https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-specialists) called, they wanna give you a katana
I loved that mod, definitely the first thing that came to mind for me.
That’s what it was! Thank you. Played it waaaaay back in the day.
i used to play this shit!
that game came close to GunZ
Such good memories
i loved that mod as a kid. set up in the matrix lobby -> go kung fu only -> get the upgrades so you jump insanely high -> disarm your opponents and murder them with their own weapons.
This was what I thought but couldn't remember the name. Played the crap out of this mod.
Literally looks just like it. Stiff ass trench coat and everything.
Tony Hawk Pro Shooter
I thought of THPS, too because of the combo bar at the bottom.
No no, that's called rollerdrome.
It reminds me of the "Total Overdose" game. I wish you luck with the project, and I hope it sells well
Reminds me a bit of Gunz the Duel as well
Came for this comment. The wall running and flipping got me. Holy shit core memory unlocked.
I know there were other people that played this, but god I've never seen a single one out in the wild irl it's like some badass fever dream
Oh man, I loved that game. What ever happened
Holy shit the memories! This game was so ahead of its time, it's a shame it wasn't more popular...

there are people on reddit born after that post
in the meantime you might enjoy r/dragonsfuckingcars
I am so fucking confused right now
I’ve seen quite a few. Surprised you missed them
Cad Bane?
Before I read the title, I thought this was just a mod to add Cad Bane in some game
Ahsoka Tano: Ugh, who else wears a hat like that?
And here I was thinking “is the White Spy an alternate skin option or is he the final boss?”
Mods are so lazy - one automod rule to remove posts with "quit my job" would solve all of these spam posts automatically.
Next week: "I ended my employment to make this game!"
It looks so janky…. Why’s it stutter so much
The entire game is slow mo at a smooth cinematic 12 fps
Hopefully just the video
Its a gif
This looks fun!
Thank you!
You’re welcome! When does it release?
That's about as much as info as you're gonna get from OP
Why does it feel like GunZ
GunZ was a classic, I was one of the few thst spec'd into daggers and had to evade the Butterfly/K Stylers. If you know you know xP.
> GunZ My hands instantly cramped up by just reading that word. "Animation Cancelling: The Game", more or less. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqb-tQVfuDs
Both inspired by max payne, actions movies and anime.
Glad i wasnt the only one. My hands hurt remembering the "BF/KS" styles.
Whats up with the fps? Is it on puropse?
can you make it with more lag???
I see Gaming is back to allowing these self advertisements of dogshit games. "I qUiT mY jOb AnD dUmPeD mY lIfE sAvInGs InTo MaKiNg ThIs GaMe"

Should ask for your job back .
Looks like a bad PS2 game that you would rent from blockbuster cause the box art looked cool.
Quit job to pursue dream: check Retro inspired game: check Pretty standard looking gameplay: check X meets Y: check Bought upvotes and bot comments: check Oh yeah, it's guerrilla reddit marketing time.
Looks a lot like double action boogaloo
Was gonna comment this too
Mods, can we get a ban for these posts? Low effort and just promotional for every low tier game people want to take off
Where have I heard this one before?

this looks like shit bro. stop quiting your jobs already.
Looks like shit.
Looks like every other 2nd/3rd person shooter game.
From 2005.

If you compare your game to other games, you've already done a horrible job.
Reminds me of the Half-life 1 mods "Action Half-life" and "The Opera". Probably before most Redditor's time on here. Probably early 2000's.
Thanks for this massive hit of nostalgium <3
lol
Tony Max Hawk Payne 5: Grind to Kill
Reminds me of Wet, Total Overdose & Stranglehold - all awesome and silly, keen to play this!
Haha, I rarely see someone mention Wet. It was a fun game but it needed to be longer, I beat it in like a day.
I came here to say similar: reminds me so much of Wet. Such a goofy, fun game with a banger of a soundtrack. Also, Eliza Dushku killed it in the VA department.
If you have the funds to quit your job and make a game then quitting your job isn’t noteworthy. Let the game speak for itself it clearly can.
This isn't gunz?
How did you support yourself financially?
Double action boogaloo vibes
this looks like that terrible game 'wet' but somehow worse :/
Hey, In Style looks really fun to play, and the retro vibes unexpectedly fits so well. Great job! :) If you're still polishing your game, I'd suggest making the ammo bar a bit more visible, because (for example) as I can see for your shotgun it will only have a couple rounds until next reload. Maybe adding numbers or making the ammo bar a bit thicker? Whatever you decide to do, keep it up the good work! You're doing great, mate.
Good for you I guess?
It does get super old of everyone and their mother posting about how they quit their job to make a video game.
Who remembers an old half life mod called “The Specialists”? This looks similar and I wanna try it! I loved that game so much
Just add a style meter more in style of DMC with ranks from D to SSS and its even better
Ah so one path to traverse levels with parkour? Zzzzzzzzz
Max Payne meets Tony Hawks Pro Skater 2 meets Sunset Overdrive meets The Matrix. Looks like a lot of fun (I gotta say after all that running and gunning that Sweet Chin Music at the end made me laugh)
This reminds me of the Action Half-Life mod back in the early 2000's where it was all about movie tropes, sliding while shooting, jump tricks and flair. Looks fun!
Cool! Reminds me of The Specialists mod for Half-life
This looks incredible. Good work my man
