God I miss Conker so much, and then I remember that AR abomination Microsoft dragged his corpse out for, and then I realise it's probably for the best that he remains dead.
Same here! I still love to play Conker: Live & Reloaded every now and then. Even though they censored the crap out of it compared to the original. Multiplayer in that game is fantastic.
Cruelty Squad
"I really look up to people who are good at violence."
(It sounds so messed up, but I generally do look up to veterans/fighters/boxers. What are my values?)
Oh definitely. Capitalism being exploitative and ending up in a hellish place is pretty well trod ground for me. I guess "do you like hurting people"/hotline miami shaming the player hits harder for me since I relate to it personally. I do not own a business where I run my employees into the ground so I don't resonate with the capitalism bad themes in media nearly as much. I have no personal guilt about the machine of capitalism since I am a powerless cog in it; vs. me actively enjoying gore and violence in video games and movies.
Cruelty squad is brilliant to me though. If AI or medical science makes resurrection/immortality cheap, then I worry it won't be the miracle we all expect it to be (as Cruelty Squad sardonically explores). I'd expect robots to be a better alternative for infinite free labor than humans; although then again robots are made of expensive parts compared to a person that only needs rice, water, and a bit of shelter. Hmmmm....
- Cyberpunk 2077
Has strong elements of anti-capitalist / anti-consumerist satire, despite being a "serious" game.
- Spec-Ops: The Line
Another "serious" game that uses satire to convey criticism towards.. it's better if you go in blind. I won't spoil it.
- Cruelty Squad
Satire criticizing late-stage capitalism and violence.
- Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
This one's more parody than satire, but you might want to check it out.
I'm glad starship Troopers walked so helldivers could run as far as reception to the theme goes. A lot of people on here are probably too young to remember but starship Troopers was criticized for being fascist propoganda when it came out.
Sure but both of these have clearly had an influence on Helldivers. It's not a wonder Automatons and Terminids are so close to Necrons and Tyranids. "For Democracy" is just a watered down "For the Emperor"
Ho hum, gimme a sec.
But to immediately answer before I go through a list of comedic games I own.
The Bard's Tale (on the PS2, or it's remastered version on modern hardware), is satire of the rpg genre as a whole.
Also Moon is another satire of RPGs and video games to a more deeper philosophical kind of way that'll make ya think, as is it's spiritual sequel chulip that is satire but thought provoking about relationships between individuals.
Cat Quest 1+2 are satire of open world RPGs in a sense, all with cute kitties as a coat of paint.
Cthulu saves the world and cthulu saves Christmas are satirical RPGs of a big bad being forced into the hero position.
Overlord 1+2 are stereotypical high fantasy with a comedic paint, and it only gets more comedic if you go against what your advisor is telling you and be an actual force of good, while being an evil looking, decked in spikes final boss type dood. One of its spin offs takes place in, and interacts with mother goose rhymes/brother grim tales I think? Whatever one is on the Wii.
Speaking of old brothers grime tales, Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ is a title that gives ya enough of a view into its satirical choices. It's a shoot 'em up that has you on the bottom screen of the DS, shooting upwards at the top screen.
Freshly Picked Tingles Rosy Rupeeland stars the titular tingle of Zelda infamy, as he gets roped into a pyramid scheme. Highly unique. There's another tingle game on the DS that you'll need an English patch for (only released in Japan), that is an adventure game where tingle falls into he world of the wizard of Oz books, and needs to find someone who will love him.
Heroland is a game where you work at a theme park as an adventure guide to any and all patrons who want to live their dreams of being a hero! You help patrons live their dreams of being a chosen one.
Journey to the savage planet has you exploring an alien planet for resources for various companies in a very humorous, and often deadly fashion!
A more recent one, Helldivers 2 is a third person shooter/action game centered around square based online pve. This game wears it's starship troopers inspiration on its sleeve, and is worth looking at for some 'American dream in space^10' vibes.
Little Kings story has you play as the little king who has just established a kingdom! As all 10 years old children monarchs do, your advisors tell you it's now time to take over the world, leading you down the path of conquest in this Pikmin like gameplay gem.
Maneater has you fulfill your dreams of a good Jaws game, as the monster the swimmers should fear. As an ever growing, evolving and ravenous shark that's out for revenge, it's a short, but amazingly fun romp in the water!
In Metal Wolf Chaos XD, you play the president of the u.s. as he tries to stop the vice president from revolting against the country, and does so by getting into a mech to fight him, and his army!
The No More Heroes series has you play as a middle aged loser who's trying to turn his life around by becoming the top assassin on the block. With a laser sword he bought off among online auction, and a desire to beat down others, this oddity is worth a play.
God hand is an action 3d brawler that's difficulty is coupled with it's great customization when it comes to your combos and moves. Satirical and silly, and fun all around.
Penny punching princess has you, a princess who's lost her wealth start a blood ath as you punch your way through your enemies, and occasionally using any gained money to buy them off, from buying off traps to no longer go off, or bosses to be weaker, money equals power, and you'll do your best to spend it in this one!
If disgaea is a satirical joy of strategy RPGs, then Z.H.P. The unlosing ranger vs. Dark Death Evil man is a wondrously satirical take on super Sentai (power rangers), and the mystery dungeon gameplay style. As an absolute loser who's been tossed into a fight against the final boss, you'll haveta fight, die and grow to fight again after countless training montages to save SUPER BABY!
Rustler has you, the local peasantry fight against the monarchy, one grand theft carriage at a time, with gameplay akin to GTA 1+2, and a wondrously medieval setting.
Saints row 3 is like GTA if they went all in on the comedy, saints row 4 is that, but with super powers.
That's... Enough for now, you got enough here buddy, I got more I could recommend, but this list is waaaay too long already!
Happy gaming!
Far Cry Blood Dragon was pretty funny.
"No doc, no way. I swore an oath to a special lady"
"Your... Wife?"
"No, lady Liberty, she taught me that winners don't use drugs"
I feel like most of the old point and click games, particularly from LucasArt were heavy into that satire. So, also Monkey Island, Full Throttle, and Grim Fandango
oh yes, great comedic writing in that wave of LucasArts games. grim fandango needs its own HBO adaptation lol
to branch off from there: recommending psychonauts and brutal legend
>sam and max save the world. 10/10 writing (also 10/10 soundtrack)
LOL nope, game had dogshit writing: every single one of Max's lines wasn't satire but some cringy ass pop culture reference.
Don't even get me started on the Abe Lincoln episode, which was full of poorly-veiled right wing propaganda.
The first that comes to mind is the assertion by Sam and Max that Earth Day is a “holiday” propagated by radical environmentalists to get people to forget about their daily concerns….what? Then there’s all the jabs at Clinton Administration, which would be perfectly fine if they revolved around actual things that damaged the country (repealing Glass-Steagall, NAFTA, the Telecommunications Act, DOMA, etc…), but no, it’s about the dreaded Monica Lewinsky scandal....
Worst of all is this 2-3 minute (or what feels like 2-3 minute) song wherein a group of Secret Service agents sing a ballad praising war, how it’s good for the economy, and how it’s bad to change Presidents halfway through such a conflict. Some may claim this was intended to be a parody of overly-zealous chickenhawks, but there was literally NOTHING stated in the song besides those three aspects on repeat.
For all his flaws, Seth MacFarlane has twice constructed two musical numbers that concurrently embraced and lambasted right-wing values (“We’re Red and We’re Gay”; “Republican Town”)- you don’t get any of that level of sophistication in the lyrics here. And considering Save the World came out in the latter half of the Bush Administration and its wars in the Middle East, I’m inclined to not give them the benefit of the doubt.
>Some may claim this was intended to be a parody of overly-zealous chickenhawks, but there was literally NOTHING stated in the song besides those three aspects on repeat.
i'm one of those "some" who claim as such. it was obvious satire. [here's the song for anyone wondering](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzvfY0d7kGg). with the huge sign saying WAR over the war room lmao obvious satire dawg.
oh well. to each to their own
Nah your take is frankly just not being able to see obvious satire. Pro war people dont sincerley praise war as a concept, they talk about the enemy being bad, and the military being protective. Even a neo con wont say "yay war!" Regardless on if they think its good. This is truly just not getting the joke. Sorry.
The Outer Worlds has pretty good capitalism satire that I found very enjoyable.
Disco Elysium is also considered very famously politically satiric. It does lean "left" quite a lot but if you don't mind you should like it.
Disco Elysium is definitely left-leaning, but at the same time, its criticism of the left is ultimately a much larger part of the story with more nuance than its caveman characterization of the right. Also, Rhetoric skill is needed to get a lot of political dialogue.
Thats sort of the problem. Its "satire" of itself is not very strong at all. And its satire of the thing they dont like is caveman-like.
You can tell which path they consider the best and when they try to fault it like the rest it just comes off as "...but its trying its best" whereas the other side's even ones sharing the political leaning get no benefit of the doubt.
So yeah its satire but it doesnt commit to being one enough for me to really call it a satire game like I would The Stanley Parable or Helldivers 2.
>Its "satire" of itself is not very strong at all.
have you actually played the game? the communist route is full withself-depricating text, communist polit vision quest, for example, is literally a joke on how the two remaining communists in district arepretentious college students discussing how turnips grow faster undercommunism. i fail to see how this is "not very strong at all"
>And its satire of the thing they dont like is caveman-like.
i have no idea how moralist text and quest can come off as caveman-like, the only ideology this is applicable to is fascism, but that's due to fascism **being** caveman-like. its quest though, is a nuanced exploration of how one can fall to those beliefs
it's all written through a left-wing perspective, sure, but the only consequence of this is that leftist text is more nuanced than it could be
You've sort of confirmed what he said. The leftie playthrough is filled with amusing but meaningless self depreciation contrasted with a heavy handed "look how stupid the other team is". I did not know the background of the game when I first played it but it was obvious to me it was written with a heavily leftie slant and meant to convey a left wing message as soon as I got out of whirling in rags.
It's a heavily leftist game - that's not a bad thing but the leftists seem to really hate facing this whenever the game is discussed. We're all biased.
That's a fair comment. It playfully ribs at its own side.
It's hard to properly satirize yourself (devs are open Marxists) and perhaps even more so for Marxists as they don't tend to be most self aware types.
[The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk](https://store.steampowered.com/app/970830/The_Dungeon_Of_Naheulbeuk_The_Amulet_Of_Chaos/) is the most I've ever laughed playing a video game.
Much like The Onion our reality has been making their job much harder lately. I watched the GTA VI trailer and thought, "Yeah, that's just the current state of Miami."
I was surprised it took this long for me to see this answer, each game perfectly makes fun of the time period and issues with it.
Vice city = 1980s coked out miami
San andreas = 1990s gang culture in LA
Gta 3 = post 9/11 NY
And so on
Doom 2016 and Eternal satirize the recent story telling trend in games that have a take on player agency.
Bio Shock: "A man chooses, a slave obeys," and "Would you kindly?"
Doom: "Now, carefully remove the argent filter..."
*smashes the container*
"You can't just shoot a hole into the surface of Mars!"
`OBJECTIVE: SHOOT A HOLE INTO MARS`
**Trolley Problem, Inc.** is a game where you have to make many decisions, all based on real dilemmas people have come up with, whether it's from recent times or from 1000 years ago.
**WHAT THE GOLF** is golf for people who find golf boring.
If you're looking for some satire mixed with some deep stuff? Stanley Parable. You looking for something straight up silly and satirical? High on Life, easily one of the funniest games I've played.
Postal 2 is a classic FPS shooter from 2003. One of my favorite games, available on sale on Steam pretty often. It's expansion pack Paradise Lost was made much later in the same engine. The developers have been updating the game since 2003, so it's got widescreen/hd/controller support and all that. Very funny game. Postal 4 is pretty neat too and plays really well on PS5.
Tak and the Power of Juju!! One of my favorite games to play for the humor aspect. Ratchet & Clank is great for some dry humor too. Possibly Jet Force Gemini? Commander Keen may also fit.
Also... No one's gonna mention Duke3D or Shadow Warrior?
Metal Gear Rising is all about satirizing modern war. PMCs, war profiteering, war crimes. The big villains are hilariously exaggerated stereotypes of the kinds of people that profit from terrible tragedies in some way. A corrupt fascist senator, a jingoistic war hawk, and a couple different high profile mercenaries
The Fallout games, especially if you live in the U.S.
The fact that in Fallout 4's Boston, there's only one or two companies in the entire area that don't have a dark secret is hilarious to me.
Disco Elysium
The best answer
“What I mean by this is - we’re *all* pissfaggots. And the world is inherently meaningless!” my favorite quote from the game so far
Conkers bad fur day?
God I miss Conker so much, and then I remember that AR abomination Microsoft dragged his corpse out for, and then I realise it's probably for the best that he remains dead.
Same here! I still love to play Conker: Live & Reloaded every now and then. Even though they censored the crap out of it compared to the original. Multiplayer in that game is fantastic.
The Stanley Parable
Exactly what I came to suggest. It's absolutely a satire of video games.
Don't forget your bucket.
Cruelty Squad "I really look up to people who are good at violence." (It sounds so messed up, but I generally do look up to veterans/fighters/boxers. What are my values?)
The game puts capitalism in the firing line as well.
I'd expect robots to be a better alternative for infinite free labor than humans; although then again robots are made of expensive parts compared to a person that only needs rice, water, and a bit of shelter. Hmmmm....
Portal 1 is a satire of both corporate sterility and also satire on the structure of video game design. Its writing is extremely good.
- Cyberpunk 2077 Has strong elements of anti-capitalist / anti-consumerist satire, despite being a "serious" game. - Spec-Ops: The Line Another "serious" game that uses satire to convey criticism towards.. it's better if you go in blind. I won't spoil it. - Cruelty Squad Satire criticizing late-stage capitalism and violence. - Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon This one's more parody than satire, but you might want to check it out.
Spec Ops was crazy. Thought it would be a basic mindless shooter...
Helldivers 2
I'm glad starship Troopers walked so helldivers could run as far as reception to the theme goes. A lot of people on here are probably too young to remember but starship Troopers was criticized for being fascist propoganda when it came out.
There’s a party at mother’s
And a good time will be had by all!
Warhammer 40K came out in 1987
Book for starship trooper came out in 1959
the book for starship troopers WAS in fact pro-facism, Paul Verhoeven turned it into a satire with his movie.
Sure but both of these have clearly had an influence on Helldivers. It's not a wonder Automatons and Terminids are so close to Necrons and Tyranids. "For Democracy" is just a watered down "For the Emperor"
Best part is some people just don't get it.
They just see it as an endorsement of their fascist values
Ho hum, gimme a sec. But to immediately answer before I go through a list of comedic games I own. sam and max save the world. 10/10 writing (also 10/10 soundtrack) holy shit especially the episode Abe Lincoln must die goes hard
I feel like most of the old point and click games, particularly from LucasArt were heavy into that satire. So, also Monkey Island, Full Throttle, and Grim Fandango

sorry man, didn't mean to shit on a game you liked
which part was right wing? the episode was explicitly anti war and anti imperialism

Then explain the Clinton and Earth Day satire that I'm clearly missing.
sam and max are cops dude. they're a satire on cops. they're gonna say some libertarian bullshit sometimes.
Lmao, cope much?
The Outer Worlds has pretty good capitalism satire that I found very enjoyable. Disco Elysium is also considered very famously politically satiric. It does lean "left" quite a lot but if you don't mind you should like it.

>amusing but meaningless self-deprecation meaningless? okay lmao, guess the whole narrative is meaningless then
What do you mean?
how is it meaningless?
It's lighthearted, token criticism. The game devs go easy on themselves.
It’s really really not lighthearted. Doesn’t sound like you played it or have the ability to understand it, it’s devastating
Genuinely sounds like you haven’t actually played the game
That's a fair comment. It playfully ribs at its own side. It's hard to properly satirize yourself (devs are open Marxists) and perhaps even more so for Marxists as they don't tend to be most self aware types.
The saints Row series satires harder than any other I have played.
I don’t think it’s satire, it’s more of a parody
True
**The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk**. If youre not into tabletop gaming or crpgs for video games, your wavelength with the game could be off.
[The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk](https://store.steampowered.com/app/970830/The_Dungeon_Of_Naheulbeuk_The_Amulet_Of_Chaos/) is the most I've ever laughed playing a video game.
Grand theft Auto games satirize America perfectly.
Apparently we’re meeting them halfway.
Much like The Onion our reality has been making their job much harder lately. I watched the GTA VI trailer and thought, "Yeah, that's just the current state of Miami."
And it's made by a British company
I was surprised it took this long for me to see this answer, each game perfectly makes fun of the time period and issues with it. Vice city = 1980s coked out miami San andreas = 1990s gang culture in LA Gta 3 = post 9/11 NY And so on
Goat simulator 3 is a good one I recently enjoyed South Park games The witness had a free satire game which came out recently, fogot its name
The Looker
I want to say Disgaea does a great job at satirizing the RPG/Hero genre very well!
I wished they'd made more with the Makai Kingdom system
Tropico 4. It's the only Tropico I've played, I assume this is typical of the series.
The South Park RPGs are satirical as all hell. Pretty crude though, obviously.
C&C Generals
Doom 2016 and Eternal satirize the recent story telling trend in games that have a take on player agency. Bio Shock: "A man chooses, a slave obeys," and "Would you kindly?" Doom: "Now, carefully remove the argent filter..." *smashes the container* "You can't just shoot a hole into the surface of Mars!" `OBJECTIVE: SHOOT A HOLE INTO MARS`
I like the intro to 2016 when he said "we can work together..." And doom guy just pushes the monitor over
I liked No one's lives forever.
High On Life
Especially if you’re a Rick and Morty fan
Imo Borderlands 1 and 2 had the best satire to date. I would count 3 here too, but I know it's satire is not as good (but I liked it)
Jazzpunk
Grand Theft Auto series
Earthbound
Stanley parabole, little misfortune
Fallout and Borderlands are both pretty good
Papers, Please is quite the statement on fascism
Borderlands is the only game that's ever made me actually laugh out loud.
BioShock series
Helldivers 2
Legless Spider mission from Dying Light had me rolling
The American Dream. It's not a great game, but the trailer sums it up. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4Yih6DZeaA
Unmetal.
Hyperdimension Neptunia. It serves as one giant dig at the game industry at large because the characters represent consoles.
I really enjoyed sunset over drive it poked fun at lots of gaming tropes.
Disco Elysium has some great political satire.
I think GTA story modes are great satire for the time period they reside in. like a neat little absurd time capsule.
South park: stick of truth and south park: fractured but whole If you have watched its show you know South park never misses on stire
