For something cool to add to your army? Yes. As an actual competitive choice? Almost entirely no. There may be an option in something like the earthshaker platform or some other ridiculously undercosted choice, but without strats, good subfaction traits, or crossfire, it tends to be very bad. The three main options I see people try is sentinels, leman russ, and baneblade variants. Sentinels are a worse ridgerunner purely because of crossfire alone. The heavy mining laser is just a direct upgrade from the Plasma Cannon, which seems to be the most popular choice. Leman russ are competing with rockgrinders with demo charges and 5 man acolyte. On paper the leman russ is amazing, but not being able to use crossfire on a unit that shoots that much is a shame. Which is also not even mentioning that there is a 60pt brood Brothers unit you need to take. The last is the baneblade. The only reason I could see taking it, is with an entirely close combat Cult, but if it runs over 500pts, you lose out on great strats to shut off overwatch or apply fights last. EDIT: yes I forgot about Aux detachments, but even without 60pt tax it's dramatically sub par.

In Arks of Omen you don't have to take any troops for brood brothers. You can use an auxiliary support detachment which is just 1 of any slot (so you can grab 3 leman russ if you wanted), or auxiliary super heavy so you can just take 1 lord of war. I agree with you that it's sub-optimal, but leman russ tanks are still real good even without born soldiers or crossfire, a player won't feel like they messed up taking them edit- also sentinels cost half the points of a ridgerunner, like, a mining laser is better than a plasma cannon, but is it better than 2 plasma cannons?

Taco_Grindr

But 3 leman russ is still a hefty investment. That's too many points that could be served far better. 20 neophytes are similar in points, obsec, crossfire, and have better synergy and can heal themselves. Also so far with AoO, I've seen tons of anti tank and much less anti horde weaponry.

SpandexPanFried

Agree. We also don't have a main battle tank natively so the russes provide t8 chassis with strong firepower that we lack ourselves. The plasma turret is so good too.

cwoac

If you are taking just the Russ, you can take it as an aux sup detachment and avoid the troop tax.

Incubus_Priest

as much as i love the idea of them abd as a wildly casual player. sadly no. especialy non vehicles. their just so bad and nearly everything they do gsc do or better

Os_the_boss

If you take a deathstrike, then yes

Disastrous-Ad8604

I sometimes use three armoured sentinels and a cheap HQ and they work ok. I have them equipped with missile launchers as you can choose frag or krak, they don’t do tonnes but they’re cheap and they provide a distraction.

Millbilly84

I have been running a stormsword fairly well mixxed into my GSC.

AWitchNamedSin

I do this alot myself actually even often going over the 25% crossfire limit. I found that a couple heavy hitting Lemans mixed with the speed genestealers can get, for me anyway, outweighs the bonuses of crossfire. I think at this point 90% of my games are close to a 50-50 split of brood brothers and genestealers and the win rate isn't to bad at my local level.

I am just starting a GSC force. I have Shadowthrone for the HQ, and a set of Neophytes ( I want to paint Custodes too so box was of value for me ) and a box of the new Boarding Patrol was ordered this morning. I have a single box of Atalan Jackals, a Biophagus, Acolyte Iconward and Clamavus. I have a box of new Cadian Shock Troops and a Leman Russ for Brood Brothers but want to add to it as a themed look rather than serious play. I like the idea of the local military being ready in the city or hive and the initial waves of the uprising joining with them.

iamalphariusalso

A Baneblade is always worth it
