I think he knew Crowley wouldn't go. I think he wanted to split them up on purpose. He knew they would create strong interference as a duo.

ladykatytrent

Totally true. Next season is going to be focused on how Crowley and Aziraphale are stronger together than apart. The miracle that they did together was huge business. I think Metatron wanted to split them up to keep their power down.

DungeoneerDragon

And we all know that they already sorted that whole antichrist thing! :D

binkleywtf

and he threatened his relationship with crowley knowing it would make aziraphale more likely to go

xmusiclover

Totally agree

The YouTuber Sendarya has a great analysis video that explores just this question: https://youtu.be/EqYjA6kCl6A?si=xZllEvn9xwKsNgoz. Highly recommend it.

TangledUpPuppeteer

And you have landed where I think absolutely everyone has landed after they ended the series. The fact the Metatron tempted Aziraphale with the promise of working with Crowley despite knowing it wouldn’t happen. So, is heaven or hell the bad guys?

Spare-Ring6053

Both

102ndDalmatian

To be fair, that question is the point of the entire series.

NoGrape9864

It's important to go to the next step of the story's message and ask why heaven and Hell look so similar? What underpins how both of them operate? How are they different to how humans operate? Season 3 will be about how Heaven and Hell are similar and how humans stand apart from them and how humans decide things should operate between the three parties. Of course this whole thing will have been a part of God's Ineffable Great Plan all along anyway.

TangledUpPuppeteer

I know. That’s what I absolutely love this particular question. It’s just one more way that the question ultimately is the same.

Due-Organization-957

In the coffee shop, he says something about how predictable people are. Yes, he absolutely knew Crowley would refuse. He also knew how to play Aziraphale to convince him to go. He knew exactly what he was doing with every syllable.

Visible_Training9920

DUDE I LOVE THIS THEORY

EmpereorIrishAlpaca

The point of the entire story is that they cannot work properly if they don't cooperate. Is it because of good-bad balance? No. It is because they can't manage a brain on their own.  If I were the metatron, I would also split them. Sorry guys. Business.

SuzyQ93

>The point of the entire story is that they cannot work properly if they don't cooperate. Is it because of good-bad balance? No. It is because they can't manage a brain on their own. They're two halves of the same character - the yin to each other's yang, quite literally. They're crippled without each other, and have immense power when they give in to their wholeness.

Visible_Training9920

😮never thought of it like that! Interesting

Cutpear

My theory is that the Metatron wanted them split up because he knew about the 25 Lazari miracle and how powerful they are together. He also knew that Aziraphale still can’t say no to Heaven (but really likes Crowley,) and that Crowley would get obviously offended about going back up.

Basic_Confusion8002

Okay I fully get what your saying and I think your mostly right. I will say that I don't think crowley re becoming a angel was ever really on the table. I think the Megatron would have let him go to heaven but being aziraphales second in command and actually being in angle were fully of the table.
