I think Jimmy is his alter ego when he leaves suburbia and goes into the city. In the American Idiot musical he's portrayed as a different person, but also can be interpreted as inside his head (think Fight Club).

GregorSD

Yeah I remember the original production of the broadway show leaves it ambiguous as to if Jimmy is an alter ego or an actual person, I saw an independent production where they make it obvious that he’s an alter ego so that’s my head cannon now

MacNuggetts

Hey, hey, hey, rule one and two bud.

SGTNose

I think you meant hey-oh, hey-oh,hey-oh!

Helpful_College6590

St. Jimmy is the Jesus of Suburbia’s “badass” alter ego who’s all about the nightlife (foreshadowing their song in ¡Dos!)

Ok_Long5367

Ohh like the song, Nightlife (idk but that song is actually one of my favorites)

funghxoul

Uhh..

Ok_Long5367

....

funghxoul

You serious?

LeonardoXII

Of course he is! Everyone knows Dos! is the sequel to american idiot! That's why it's called two!

Ok_Long5367

Niceeee

In Letterbomb when we get the lyrics: "You're not the Jesus of Suburbia, The St. Jimmy is a figment of your father's rage and your mother's love" which heavily implies if not outright states that Jimmy is an alt personality/persona that J.o.S is putting on in the big city.

sib2972

Also “in the state of my mind it’s my own private suicide” in Homecoming when Jesus “kills” the Jimmy alter ego

sakurachan999

even though it's metaphorical, the line "jimmy died today, he blew his brains out into the bay" is still so damn raw

Existing_Claim_4462

I know i still get chills every time I hear Billie sing it

Mysterious_Turnip_78

As others have said it's his big city alter ego. Leads him astray and is the crazier one. I always loved the lines in homecoming about "Jimmy died today, blew his brains out into the bay, in the state of mind, it's my own private suicide" Always thought that resolved it very clearly, genius lyrics.

WangHalen

They’re different songs, and one is much shorter than the other.

Living-Ear-1057

Bruh

Exylatron

He’s pretty much a representation of Jesus’s self-destructive tendencies and nihilistic world-view. Think of it like Jimmy is the devil on his shoulder.

ItsNotFordo88

St. Jimmy is the alter ego who the narrator (Jesus of suburbia) feels he *needs* to. It’s self destructive and isn’t who he actually is.

Ok_Long5367

So it's like new city, new me sorta thing?

ItsNotFordo88

Yeah more or less. More so a personification of his rebellious feelings he had back in his old town. He then meets Whatshername who actually *is* that person. Seems to imply she left because he wasn’t the person he was making himself out to be.

PinheadShit

St Jimmy ended blowing his brains into the bay, Jesus did not, that's one difference of many I'm sure

BigDARKILLA

Batman and Bruce Wayne

FunVast4263

I always thought they were different people. Just bc Jesus of Suburbia opens with “I’M the son of Rage & Love, the Jesus of Suburbia” (first person perspective) but then in St. Jimmy & Give Me Novocaine, Jimmy is referred to in the third person “St. Jimmy’s coming down across the alleyway” & “Jimmy says it’s better than air”.

AssGasorGrassroots

It's pretty ambiguous, but if it were a split personality thing, Jesus would still refer to Jimmy as another person

FunVast4263

Good point, i didnt even think of that.

manemjeff42069

I think he says "here", not "air", right?

sakurachan999

wow i never knew that. 'air' made sense considering the song is about some metaphorical drug, emphasising the addiction over a necessity like air, implying he needs the novocaine to survive

pullingteeths

I think it's both. Represents another side of his personality but also a person or people he's met that influenced him.

Blackthorn20

Jesus of suburbia = it’s so over St jimmy = we are so back

Ok_Perception_2707

the ballad of wilhelm fink

Linuzjo96

da26990
