It may be me remembering his .04 assed verse on Bad Blood, but Kendrick delivering a killer guest verse with a popstar still feels like an utter delight.
E-40 on Brokencyde's song Booty Call is the most "give me my cash now" verse I think I've ever heard. I think he raps for less than 20 seconds at most. You might even miss him if you stop paying attention even though he has a super recognisable voice.
That early 2010s period where every pop single had a guest verse was so weird. Katy Perry and Kanye West. Taylor Swift and Kendrick. Fall Out Boy with Migos. Some all-time stinker verses from great artists.
there’s a lot of indie hip hop collaborating with indie acts vampire weekend and danny brown, foster the people with saba and jid, joywave with mick jenkins and little simz, etcetcetc. that works so well, but somehow it rarely works in mainstream pop.
The indie stuff is usually songs built from the ground up as a collaboration. Those pop verses, especially during the EDM boom of the early 2010s, were plug-and-play verses where everyone knew that the rappers were paid to show up and only had to do sixteen bars. Furthermore, they were regularly just bolted onto another song, with the express intent of getting a boost up the charts.
> One thing I gotta call out boy
> Take a look at Fall Out Boy
> Since they ain't black
> When they get money they don't ball out boy
> They just buy tight jeans till they nuts hang all out boy
> They figure Ye' dress tight, so we gon' dress tighter
> He dress white, so we gon' dress whiter
Not that weird really just a half arsed trend. It's no different to the period where every pop song had a dubstep "drop" in it. It's just pop music adjusting to mimic and take advantage of popular trends at the time, done in a really superficial and low effort way as its just a money grab
>Kendrick delivering a killer guest verse with a popstar still feels like an utter delight.
That's because Beyoncé is worth her salt, and isn't your average gimmicky pop star. She seems committed to putting out high-quality, worthwhile remixes as opposed to the lazy cash grab remixes that other pop stars and rappers have normalized. Kendrick's contribution is fire and they upended the production throughout the song, so it really is a proper remix that reimagines the original.
Kendrick's verse is definitely fire, and works well. And I don't dispute the overall quality of her remixes.
But what specifically do you mean when you say that the production is 'upended throughout' the song? The production largely remains the same, extended to include Kendrick's verse. There's like, one little added synth line over the top at the end in the new version lol.
'Upended' might be exaggerating it, but they've added extra background harmonies, ad libs, and synths throughout the song that make it sound a bit harder and trippier. The middle section of the song sounds the same, but they've played around with the beginning and end enough for me to feel like it's a subtly new spin on the original.
Then again, I have been *hooked* on Renaissance for the past month or so, so any minor tweaks in the instrumentation are bound to be instantly noticeable to me. 😝
Oh this is true, I didn't like that song at all. But I still wouldn't call it a lazy cash grab since her vocals sounded great and she did bring something new to the song, but I wasn't a fan of that record personally. Every remix she's done since then has been more fun though, especially Savage.
It was that way on Birds too. Was hyped asf when I heard 3 stacks on The Ends and Kendrick on Goosebumps for the first time. I think it’s definitely gonna be that way again
nobody would care if lil mosey did a regular rollout either, you have to actually have a fanbase for this to work but you don’t have to be huge. playboi carti is a great example of someone who isn’t huge but has a die hard fanbase
true, i think it’s always a risk and can be pulled off with the right escape velocity, but Beyoncé/Eminem level artists it’s a guarantee which is kind of insane
And with all respect due to Beyonce, I feel like she was really one of the artists to prove that. Not that it was never done before her, but I feel like her surprise drop kinda defined surprise drops in the streaming era.
Bro could put up Wilt level numbers and all I'd think is "yeah hes gonna have a really fucking bad next game", at least he's consistent in being inconsistent I guess lmao wcyd Lakers broze
I laughed so hard at that one article in Pitchfork or some shit where an English lit professor went through all Jay-Z's "double entendres" and I believe didn't think a single one of them was
I’m reading the article now but it’s silly cos it’s not “this professor debunks all the times Jay z claims he used a double entendre” and instead it’s “a professor debunks random wordplay that we incorrectly deigned as double entendres” lol
>Truthfully I be lyin' in my rap song
'Causе I always fail to mention I'll snap homie
His career didn't come with no lifе insurance
Hope his day one fans got some facts on him
Whats he talkin boot?
Its kinda absurd how good kendrick is. Dude hasnt dropped a single verse in the last 10 years where he DOESNT find weird flow pockets that no other rapper would find
Me too. Her work from like self-titled up till now felt a bit like too serious at times. Which was kinda cool to hear, but I eventually wanted something a bit more fun again (I thought Everything Is Love was exceptionally boring) and most of this album delivered that to me.
yeah i noticed that too lol . the “204080 out the trap hit it with the wrap put it on the map then we right back” refrain is almost identical to GOLDs chorus
If she did a remix of Church Girl, I'm not sure who I'd want on it, but I know that there's someone who could just come and kill a verse over that beat.
Everyone going off about Kendrick and Beyoncé, but I'm stoked to see The Dream still popping up in production credits. Obviously, Mike Dean on those synths in the last half of the song.
People aren't focusing on it because the production is very close to the original with some small additions here and there. If you haven't heard the rest of Renaissance yet you should definitely check it out, it's got great production all over the tracklist.
Kendrick is so fucking creative man. His vocal inflections and flow on this thing are insane. I hope that Kendrick takes his exit from TDE as an opportunity to do even more experimental flows and vocal inflections. I honestly want him to make a whole album or tape with an experimental hip hop sound because I feel he could really pull that off.
Yeah, she's saying she's the problem since she's so sexy, and is comparing herself to the addictive drug crisis, which explains the news-report music in the song. The flag in the single cover is also made of pills!
He dissed Drake:
*Truthfully I be lyin' in my rap song*
*'Causе I always fail to mention I'll snap homie*
*His career didn't come with no lifе insurance*
*Hope his day one fans got some facts on him*
*I'm an honorary Beyhive*
*Let's see why them diamonds don't be fly, they all CGI*
*You better get it off your chest like breast reduction*
*If she stressed over you, she stressed for nothin'*
*Hold up, wait a minute*
*Even AI gotta practice clonin' Kendrick*
*The double entendre, the encore remnants*
*I bop like tin men, the opps need ten men*

He’s an old school Gemini
He said it in the verse? Which part?
"universal dont play possum im a business man doing as follows"
What do you mean what part? He only has one verse
what song
Gucci gang
Pootie tang
Who?
Ppl be lazy nowadays
Right? By the time he finished typing that comment, he could have looked it up
Kendrick needs another feature run
Im praying this marks the start of one
It may be me remembering his .04 assed verse on Bad Blood, but Kendrick delivering a killer guest verse with a popstar still feels like an utter delight.
the kendrick pop verse era doing stuff with sia and maroon 5 is a time i try to forget.
I don't think we've seen someone so here exclusively for the paycheck like we saw Kendrick on those pop songs.
gucci and quavo were doing the same thing around that time. it was rough. young thug then did havana and did his thing on it. goat
Gucci and one of the Paul brothers was pretty bad
I mean, would you waste good lines on that?
I can respect getting the bag, but I think it's a question of doing it at all lmao
I feel like y’all all forgetting about the London
Young thug kills Havana, still a great song imo
Lil Wayne on pop songs was up there lmao, I think he was even the person who told Kendrick to guest on pop songs to boost his mainstream reach
Wayne could make pop songs though, his verse on Down was a genuinely good part of the song.
Wayne knows how to sound like he's having fun on a track, its what makes his pop features so good.
"Down like the economy" 👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
Never forget "It's Weezer and it's Weezy" Or, do forget
Can’t Stop Partying still haunts my dreams
E-40 on Brokencyde's song Booty Call is the most "give me my cash now" verse I think I've ever heard. I think he raps for less than 20 seconds at most. You might even miss him if you stop paying attention even though he has a super recognisable voice.
“Now shake it like chocolate milk” occasionally pops up in my head. What a song. Lol.
Megan needs to rap that one and let the rest of the world remember it again.
I am in awe that you brought up that song I’m having war flashbacks from my teenage years lmao
FUCKIN SNOOP'S ENTIRE CAREER, HELLO?
Except Snoop Dogg, of course. His feature on a very gay song by Youtuber Ricky Dillon is excrutiating. Plus NFT song, Katy Perry and Just Eat.

The Vampire Weekend one worked well with a rap feature because it's actually a reworked Souls of Mischief track
Donnie Brown and Vampire Weekend?! Checking this out, asap.
Just casually mentioning there's a Fall Out Boy and Migos song🤯
They did a remix album it has features from Black Thought, Joey Badass, Big KRIT just to name a few
Jay Z does the intro for Fall Out Boy’s Infinity on High album!
A clever subversion of this trope? Wild for the Night ft. Skrillex.
Yeah. And Skrillex × Ross.
fall out boy with kanye is iconic though
> One thing I gotta call out boy > Take a look at Fall Out Boy > Since they ain't black > When they get money they don't ball out boy > They just buy tight jeans till they nuts hang all out boy > They figure Ye' dress tight, so we gon' dress tighter > He dress white, so we gon' dress whiter

Let's not pretend that Beyonce is without sin. I remember that Ed Sheeran song she showed up on.
Oh this is true, I didn't like that song at all. But I still wouldn't call it a lazy cash grab since her vocals sounded great and she did bring something new to the song, but I wasn't a fan of that record personally. Every remix she's done since then has been more fun though, especially Savage.
do we know if he is or isn't on UTOPIA yet
If it's anything like Astroworld, we won't know all the features until we're already listening
It was that way on Birds too. Was hyped asf when I heard 3 stacks on The Ends and Kendrick on Goosebumps for the first time. I think it’s definitely gonna be that way again
That surprise Andre feature is some of the hypest I've ever been hearing an album intro
really looking forward to finding out which other features will be joining don toliver on this one
The Weeknd would be a strong bet, he’s been on every Travis album so far
Possibly Future too, they’ve been working on together pretty frequently recently.
Fingers crossed every song features Sheck Wes
The way god intended
no
ok let me know when you find out thanks
alright
Lmao.
Kenny needs to give us his mixtape era weezy
Oh this a surprise SURPRISE drop
Beyoncé seems to be good at that
[удалено]
surprise album drops can cause more attention to an album than a regular rollout can
Yeah but if lil mosey did a surprise album drop tomorrow then no one would know.

Some people credit her as the reason why albums are now dropped on Fridays instead of Tuesdays like they used to be.
Jellyfish Jam sample goes hard
are you confusing jellyfish jam with stadium rave lol
Ah damn, you’re right. Gotta brush up on my SpongeBob
Learning they are the same song
they are both in an episode titled jellyfish jam but they are most definitely two different songs
Damn you are the SpongeBob scholar
this fuckin guy
Nation on the way
I just love how Kendrick feeds in to the Gemeni shit really sounds like two egos dueling it out
Kendrick drop your Honestly Nevermind or you're a coward
Is this a compliment or insult? 🤔
Meaning suprise drop not terrible album lol
I took it as "Kendrick drop a dance/house album" since he sounds so great on beats like this and Yeah Right
What are you talking about?? Nvm I read that wrong. That would be crazy I love it
fire ass kendrick verse
I was very surprised how long it went
Same here - I didn’t expect him to sound so good on this song. The voices and the flows keep it fun for that whole minute and a bit that his verse is
Kendrick collects rap voices like Anthony Davis collects bad even-numbered playoff game performances
He’s due for a 63/26/8 blk game followed by 17/10/3 on 34% fg
Bro could put up Wilt level numbers and all I'd think is "yeah hes gonna have a really fucking bad next game", at least he's consistent in being inconsistent I guess lmao wcyd Lakers broze
[удалено]
Basically he’ll go from dropping tpab to dropping the big day
[удалено]
AD - Alternate Days
Anthony Every Other Day-vis
Like Jason Tatum collects 4th quarter bricks and home game L's
collecting rap voices like kevon looney collects rebounds
Like drake collects accents
Never thought we would see pop feature Kenny again. This is cool asf
When Beyonce calls, you pick up
Unless you're Jay z and cheating on her
I feel like this is a layered joke. I know Jay Z was unfaithful but it looks like you're also referencing Say My Name lol

High pitched Kenny 🥰 still switching up the flow!!
High pitched kenny spazzes out in features
yooo this came outta nowhere. kendrick feature is kooky af. And on top of a great beyonce song.
>Truthfully I be lyin' in my rap song 'Causе I always fail to mention I'll snap homie His career didn't come with no lifе insurance Hope his day one fans got some facts on him Whats he talkin boot?
Ice JJ fish dissed him
Kenny don't want that smoke.
My friend Steve I think. He's a project manager
Its kinda absurd how good kendrick is. Dude hasnt dropped a single verse in the last 10 years where he DOESNT find weird flow pockets that no other rapper would find
Kenny 4k
I'm really enjoying this era of Beyoncé
Me too. Her work from like self-titled up till now felt a bit like too serious at times. Which was kinda cool to hear, but I eventually wanted something a bit more fun again (I thought Everything Is Love was exceptionally boring) and most of this album delivered that to me.
FEAT KENDRICK????
we’re eating brother
Beyonce release this the same day she bought the most expensive house in California. America has a problem Beyoncé it’s you.
The song is literally her saying She's the "problem". (cuz she's such a bad bitch)
Lol that’s hilarious and sounds like a parody
The song's cover is the American flag made of bullets. I was expecting something about the epidemic of mass shootings Americans seem to love, but no.
F.D Signifier has a great video on Black Conservatism (I believe it's the 2nd part) where he discusses Jay-Z in this light.
Watched this a couple of days ago, was educational. Didn't change my thinking about Jigga at all but that wasn't what I watched it for.
Financial freedom my only hope Fuck livin rich and dying broke
Link? A timestamp would be sweet too
https://youtu.be/Vx6tseoM_u0 Starts around 1:09. The part of the video called "the black capitalist".
🙏 appreciate you fam
My first thoughts exactly
Yeah Jay Z and Beyoncé are just tiresome they both seem to talk mainly about their wealth now and little else
Do you dudes listen to music or do you just skim through it?
This.
*wHaT's bETtEr thAn oNe biLLiOnAiRe? tWo*
beyonce hitting that brockhampton flow in the second half lmao
Can’t wait for Act II, when Beyoncé says “I tried to eat a sandwich / I couldn’t eat the sandwich / I used to wear a diaper / I made another sandwich”
“I used to not make money / now I make lots of money / I used to go to jail / now I don’t go to jail”
“I’m kinda paranoid / I miss the chicken nuggets”
On point lmao
I don't get it
I think it’s making fun of Ameer’s flow, it got repetitive later on in the saturation series
But r/hhh told me Ameer was the only reason Brockhampton was ever good.
yeah i noticed that too lol . the “204080 out the trap hit it with the wrap put it on the map then we right back” refrain is almost identical to GOLDs chorus
That flow is called a trochaic meter. It's a common rhymic structure in poetry (and rap).
if beyonce is gonna run a few more remixes, i’d love to see drake do a proper heated remix because he sounded nice on the reference track
as they're discussing in the popheads thread it'd be cool if Beyoncé did a whole remix album for Renaissance
Sort of like her Dawn of Chromatica or Tree of Clues but like...less out there.
If she did a remix of Church Girl, I'm not sure who I'd want on it, but I know that there's someone who could just come and kill a verse over that beat.
I’d love Megan on it
Now it makes sense why she was playing Allright by Kendrick between costume changes and before this song on her concertb
I am absolutely THROATED after listening to this 🔥
You could’ve worded this any other way. Lmao
No let him ~~cook~~ gag
Lol bro my bad I’m just geeked
He's gawked

Kendrick snapped on this. Hope he drops more stuff in the summer.
B-Sides from last album. Maybe more Bey Sides
Fire, this song was my favorite on the album too. What a treat.
as per usual, Kendrick feature game skrong
Even AI gotta practice clonin Kendrick
Kendrick is so fucking creative man. His vocal inflections and flow on this thing are insane. Bro I know I just want him to drop some crazy shit
Kendrick went in! Hopefully this is the start of a feature run for him…
Song title is so opposite to the song lol what the hell
Yeah, she's saying she's the problem since she's so sexy, and is comparing herself to the addictive drug crisis, which explains the news-report music in the song. The flag in the single cover is also made of pills!
Really great surprise for a friday night. The original was already great, and Kendrick's verse is so good.
KENDRICKKKK????
Obama playlist music
Go stink Go stink
Go stink!!!!🕺🕺🕺
Kendrick rapped his ass off my goodness
goddamn he snapped on this, it’s officially kendrick feature season
I don’t think Kendrick is capable of missing
Kendrick's different flows are so impressive.
they both destroyed this
i agree with song title

Breast reduction line is at Drake for sure, since he said he doesn't pay for reductions only to make them bigger
GO STINK, FUCK IT UP
