Let us just remember that Hedman, a Norris Finalist and NHLPA voted best Dman for 5 years in a row, played thru his prime on a 7.8M/yr contract. The 2016 re-signing of Stammer and Hedman for 8yr was arguably the most important off season in our franchise history.

xFraser19

Which at the time he signed it was #1 dman money and in a no income tax state. Great value compared to where the cap went over the course of the contract, but it’s not like he signed a crazy hometown discount deal for well under his value at the time he signed it. Having said that, insane value for Tampa on the tail end of that contract. Gotta think he’s getting a raise on his new deal.

CarlSK777

A raise when he's gonna be 34 when his next deal kicks in? Paying a player for what's he's accomplished rarely pays off

xFraser19

Probably doesn’t pay off, but is also likely what will happen. You see it constantly. Is it the right move? Probably not, usually depends on the player, position and the situation. But it happens all the time.

KILLER_IF

I mean not really, 7.8M/yr in 2016 was still not even one of the top 20 highest contracts in the league, and it was clear at that time he would be a Norris candidate for years to come. And, it was a 8 year deal, which would just get better year by year, and thats not including the unexpected cap not going up during Covid.

xFraser19

When his contact kicked in he was in the top 3 highest paid defenseman at that time and 20th in the league, that seems pretty in line with a perennial Norris candidate/#1 franchise d man at that time

theoneandonlykeenan

The real way to go about this would be to see the D contracts signed within a year each way of Hedman

xFraser19

Okay so here’s what I was able to pull from Capfriendly (RIP). I’m only going to list the big notable contracts I think are comparable to Hedman, specifically for defenseman who fit the definition of “top pair” at that time (not in terms of actual pairing but ice time, importance etc) 2015 Mark Giordano, 32 - 6.75x6 Erik Johnson, 28 - 6x7 Brent Seabrook, 31 - 6.875x8 2016 Morgan Rielly, 22 - 5x6 Alex Goligoski, 30 - 5.475x5 Keith Yandle, 29 - 6.35x7 Seth Jones, 21 - 5.4x6 Torey Krug, 25 - 5.25x4 Aaron Ekblad, 20 - 7.5x8 Victor Hedman, 25 - 7.785x8 Rasmus Ristolainen, 21 - 5.4x6 Hampus Lindholm, 22 - 5.205x6 Brent Burns, 32 - 8x8 2017 Dimitry Orlov, 25 - 5.1x6 Cam Fowler, 26 - 6.5x8 Kevin Shattenkirk, 28 - 6.65x4 Marc-Edouard Vlasic, 31 - 7x8 There weren’t a lot of similarly aged defenseman in 2015 signing extensions, so that definitely factors in. Brent Burns notably signed after Hedman has already extended (Nov 22nd vs July 1) and Ekblad was coming off of his ELC as a 20 year old compared to Hedman at 25. Fun list to put together though!

far_257

> Brent Burns, 32 - 8x8 > Marc-Edouard Vlasic, 31 - 7x8 I didn't realize these guys were ALREADY old when they signed those deals.

Pineapple_warrior94

The Doug Wilson special. He also did this with Couture, the guy loved sending big money to people around the age of 30 with long contracts

xFraser19

They just turned 30, they’re in the prime of their life! Not as athletes, no, but still a prime!

SnapShotFromTheSlot

> no income tax state. Absolutely every American pays income tax, without exception. Also, everything else you said was either wrong or conjecture. Please stop saying this.

xFraser19

Please point out what else I said that was wrong, since “everyone else I said was wrong or conjecture”

I think this means a deal for both Stammer and Hedman come out on the same day.  Their contracts are offset by a year but Hedman has stated he wants to be a Bolt for life and didn't want to wait until the end like Stammer had to. This contract doesn't kick in until next Summer. And just like last time, Stamkos had to wait until the last minute to sign his deal. They want to play together and have young families in the area. I doubt they uproot their comfort for slightly more money. I'll be worried when I actually see the ink dry on a contract with another team  All signs point to a big day around July 1st for the whole team.

yelpisforsnitches

I’m going to cling onto this optimism

SwagFondue

I'm not totally against parting ways with Stamkos, but man letting him walk and then signing Hedman a year in advance of his contract end would be brutal

Yamcha_is_dead

Would be cutthroat, but I can kinda imagine the forward group without Stamkos. I *absolutely* cannot say the same for the D core without Hedman.

awayfromcanuck

This quote compared to every other quote about Stamkos for the last year...

Basil_Normal

Tough reality but Hedman is far more important to the team on the ice than Stamkos is. Debatable who’s more important between him and Vasilevskiy. Off the ice may be a different story, but don’t mind getting Hedman signed being a huge priority for the team even with Stamkos up in the air.

Lattes1

Surely that means Stamkos is gone? I feel like that's such a huge slap in the face.

SnapShotFromTheSlot

> Surely that means Stamkos is gone? Huh? Why?

SwagFondue

I mean I think Stamkos is probably gone, but this doesn't close the door, this contract is a year in advance and would probably be a solid cut from what he's making now

ScarvesOnGiraffes

Any ideas what he'd get on his next contact?

yelpisforsnitches

Yeah this is not good news. I was optimistic about the situation until I read this. Fuck man this would be painful
