Gotta remember these are all meant for businesses or education, so they can charge that much. And they're not just clocks, they're internet-connected clocks that can sync with a central system that a company manages.
Yep! They're common in places like office buildings, hospitals, and schools. Many rooms means many clocks and this wayĀ nobody has to set them or change the batteries.
We use a low frequency wireless clock for our schools. Something like 700mhz from a dedicated broadcaster. The clocks sync a couple times a day should they fall behind. The low frequency penetrates walls like block easier. Couple d batteries good for 5-7 years.
We had a "new" old version that used wifi. Super awesome when the techies updated wifi passwords. Pull every clock down, direct connect PC to clock over Ethernet, and download a new CFG to it.
Edit: TLDR Poe clocks sound fantastic...
Clocks are a building system and they need to have building-timescale support models
We deployed 625 wifi clocks from a well known vendor on campus , each had to be bench programmed before deployment, giant time sink, cost was around 60k for hardware alone.
The guts of each clock was a small busybox Linux device, and the management interface required flash, and within 4 years there were problems with locales and daylight savings times. By 5 years they could no longer provide security updates for the server, and it got hacked by a pen tester, and there was no way to get further years of dates for DST anymore. Who knows what security holes the actual clocks had, for all I know someone could have had a 625 node computer cluster if they got into that vlan
When we returned from Covid we had to replace the whole campus and we replaced the whole clock system... this time we went with a radio system, it creates a Bluetooth low energy mesh network with wired base stations. Management is SaaS.
Never deploy a building system that doesn't have patching and management plans for decade-scale deployment
Totally makes sense for newer construction. The older cinderblock school where I work would cost more to wire everything than all the AA batteries and labor costs for years and years.
I've seen even custom eletromechanical systems to set clocks around an old 1970's ship, because timezones change a lot through some routes and the crew sometimes wants to also see the time at their home country. People like clocks.
Paris had city-wide, fully pneumatic+mechanical centrally managed clocks in 1877!
https://www.amusingplanet.com/2022/02/the-pneumatic-clocks-of-paris.html?m=1
Tie it in to timers on Alexa/Google/Siri. Basically a DIY Amazon Echo wall clock - which is perfect for cooking. Timers on a smart speaker suck, because they just go off while youāre in the middle of something. Timers on your phone arenāt visible. An analog clock in your peripheral vision, with light up tick marks for how many minutes the cookies have left - is perfect. But the amazon one is Bluetooth and only works with Alexa. Iād kill for one that works with my phone or had an open standard, but still looks nice.
I would love thisā¦ but for me - it would have to resemble the center console display of Doc Brownās Delorean Time Machine. Iāve always wanted to make one with the three clocks, (past, present, and future) but then use some kind of graphic that LOOKS like I taped over the future and past time areas with New York, Chicago, or somethingā¦ like saying, Iām not time traveling anymore, I just want to know what time it isā¦
Bonus points to put a used plutonium cylinder and the flux capacitor near by in a closet collecting dust for a guest to find - coat closet should work. ;)
Poe powered speakers, my wife and I like to listen to music while cooking. Iāve been wanting to use these kinds.
https://www.bluesoundprofessional.com/poe-speakers/
Omg. Where were you like 6 months ago when I was wiring this damn house with regular speaker wire. I should have been using up that old 5e I have sitting in the garage!
And WTF is the only way to get this stuff by appointment at a local dealer??
Speaker wire for remote speakers with a central hub is the most common setup imo. You went the correct path for a house.
I'd imagine the POE speakers are going to both be ridiculously expensive and use special proprietary software.
Sometimes yes, however, it also sometimes means artificially trying to make the product "high end"
End of the day it's a speaker with a streaming box stuck to it, so I would say this is BS marketing or "positioning" as they like to call it.
I can go onto Autotrader and look up a Lambo, it will have the price for it lol.
Not really sure who the target demographic is here lol, these aren't the Rolls-Royce of speakers or something.
You can just parallel up all 4 pairs to turn CAT cable into speaker wire. (Did that with a bunch of CAT3 that I got for free.) The voice coils you'll find in any speaker reasonable for home use would be much thinner than the wires in the cable so the speakers will overheat long before the cable does.
Good luck finding PoE speakers to buy anywhere as a consumer. The only ones I could find were Lithe Audio pro series, which were Ā£500. I could probably have stomached that but the little PoE adaptor you need to buy in addition is Ā£150-Ā£200 which is absolutely shameless price gouging.
Also tried a RPi with a DigiAmp+ hat and cheap passive ceiling speaker (for a fraction of the cost) but the Amp hats need their own power and won't draw from the RPi without killing it. Even with some kind of Ethernet->9v POE adapter that would mean having to run 2 cables if I wanted data over ethernet as well.
In the end I found a way to run power to where the speaker was being buried; but the lesson learned is that the state of the PoE speaker market is not good.
Terrible idea, but depending on your use case, a camera might not be useful; However, a poe powered turret might be. Like one of the ai turrets that targets specific people. Would be especially useful for mid day pranks but hey just a thought. Seriously though access point or take the run back and run it somewhere useful.
TV with a raspberry pi or similar with home announcements!
"Get Billy from school!"
Grocery list of what's needed
Birthdays.
Just a regular tv or if you have it, then Emby/XMBC/Plex/Jellyfin
VLC player that you can stream stuff to like who's at the door.
Possibilities are endless. Lol
If there was a year at the top and the prices changed with the year to demonstrate inflation, that would be pretty cool. Great for trivia if you could ask your voice assistant to pull up a random year on the McMenu.
Fun fact: Iām old enough to have received the McDonaldās menu song record in our newspaper. And I memorized the entire menu song and tortured my family with my rendition of it.
Make it an ipcam open to the internet but connected to someone's Xfinity wifi.
Hang a picture of the Scary Movie Ring girl right in front of the camera and see if you go viral. Haha.
Wat good is a camera pointing at Ur family eating dinner... An AP probably will offer U a slight better coverage. Unless OP have something he needs to see in the kitchen...
Cameras aren't just good outside a house. They are also good inside, especially if you have pets. Get a wide angle or multi-lens and you can easily get a view of the whole room plus whats outside the window. Also, indoor cameras are pretty cheap compared to good outdoor cameras.
Yup. Pet monitoring system. Great way to get a use out of security systems that charge you for recording, but offer free monitoring. This is how I use Amazon Blink.
The something else should be if that camera points towards a sliding patio door, or as I like to call them "slightly better than a gaping hole in the wall for burglars"
Agreed. The camera doesn't need to be pointed at the table. Any part of the house that someone can get into, out of, or walk through should be covered.
Yes and no. While they do focus the beam in a certain direction, in a residential setting it matters less since even the weaker parts are strong enough. I have a single unifi AP in my basement pointing down, and it covers the whole house anyway.
I placed mine to the back of the TV and even unplugged my second one, cause our flat has perfect coverage as is. Also vertically of course.
Edit: It should be mentioned, that it's one of the APs made for the ceiling
Nah just get the 6ghz ubiquiti AP, turn off the 2.4 ghz band, and set the power to low. That way when in the kitchen mobile devices will hit that AP and use less power and the wall penitration will be low.
It's OK to have a dense AP deployment, just manage the channels properly and turn the power down. It increases client capacity.
Someone has to make a PoE mmWave PIR sensor, right?
If not, this looks dope AF. In fact, I might have to make some of these... https://community.home-assistant.io/t/poe-mmwave-pir-sensor/530354/
I've had this idea for Wireless Access Point mixed with a smart fire detector / CO2 detector. It would be a good fit for the kitchen drop OP posted. It would be great for people hard of hearing who may not hear the fire alarm from their bedroom. It could alert you to your phone / amazon echo / google home and also verbalize "Fire Kitchen" or "Carbon Monoxide Garage" by speaking to all other WAP / Fire Detectors in the house. Does anyone know if anything like this already exists?
OP why is that not a good spot for a WAP? Do you have any movement sensors, maybe you could put one there.?
Digital signage? Add the weather and traffic for the morning commute.
YoDeck is an option. I would say run the Pi with a PoE hat but you still need power for the display.
I think a single display is still free and could be a good homelab toy.
The TV you see in the pic at right has a FireStick with ambient mode. Similar idea, but donāt love the electrons required for a larger always on display.
Put a socket on it if your going to just bung it back through the wall. Sodās Law says youāll need it later and will never be able to retrieve the cable.
We have some ESP32 boards with PoE hats. Weāre using them for Bluetooth feeding to HomeAssistant, we have some BT temp sensors and buttons etc. PoE means they stay up when the power is down, as all the BT devices are already battery powered.
I looked into using one to using one to make a serial controlled RGB light, so that in a power cut it would keep working, but the PoE hats weāre using have about enough spare power for about 30cm of LED strip, so I abandoned that idea.
Weāve also joked about making a PoE singing fish, with a built in voice assistant. That seems like the ideal place for such a device.
Obviously a dimmable rgbw motion activated battery backup emergency exit sign with fire suppression š
No for real though if you're open to a camera in your house I would use one for presence detection as it's the only reliable method I've found. I started to use a few wide fov cameras instead of pir sensors with HA and it's been so reliable I don't think I'll ever switch back. (I use my own detection model and server with google Coral so unless you're up for that your mileage may vary)
If you're not comfortable with that I'd say either the Poe version of the EP1 sensor (might be called the ep2) or try and find a poe clock/ maybe signage to display the time and/ or weather. Maybe upcoming events?
Another vote for digital wall clock with NTP server, but also why not add a discrete fish eye camera while you're at it. Don't forget to convert all your drops to 6a! I hear that 6e stuff is baad juju.
Iāll say put an AP or camera there just like the 45 other people who didnāt bother to read your whole post. /s
Seriously though, maybe some kind of lighting, but really you should just make note of it in case you sell and the new owners want to utilize it, and tuck it back in the wall.
If you can't think of anything, I'd socket it so that you have easy access in the future in case you do find a need for it or something comes along.
Unfortunately I can't find one for PoE, but I was thinking of a dimmable pir light so in the middle of the night you can have a dim light.
A Zigbee coordinator to make sure you have perfect Zigbee coverage for your smart home. [https://tubeszb.com/product/cc2652p2-based-zigbee-to-poe-coordinator-2023/](https://tubeszb.com/product/cc2652p2-based-zigbee-to-poe-coordinator-2023/)
I would suggest some kind of dashboard for HA, or something else. Otherwise, a speaker or digital clock could be handy in the kitchen.
I donāt know is you have cameras in/around your house, but maybe a of UniFi digital signage displays to show them all? (UniFi Connect Display)
Cameras are Reolink PoE. Iāve already got a TV in the kitchen, just to the right in the photo. Also not sure about the idea of turning a kitchen TV into a security room console. Might feel like Iām eating breakfast in a prison. My phone also gets camera alerts and is pretty convenient!
HomeLab dashboard, Get the WAF high with your stats! /s
A dash was not a joke, show your next appointments, car charge state, who is home, full screen picture when the doorbell rings. Other ideas: accesspoint, speaker
Camera. Youād be surprised how useful a camera could be. Earlier this year my kid sad he fell over and hit his head. He likes to joke and pretend a lot of different scenarios. I watched the footage of this and learned he had a mild seizure and fell down.
I would cut in a low volt box and put a blank plate on it OR terminate an ethernet jack on it.
Honestly, thatās a fantastic place for an AP. Iād like to hear your rationale why itās not.
Throw an old rpi, an old tv/monitor up there with MagicMirror on it. Show calendar, sports scoring, flash a few grafana/prometheus (whatever you use if you use anything) server monitoring screens, family photos, exterior cam views, occasional happy Birthday spouse or kids or friends or family if they come by, whatever. Or push it back and patch the dry wall and toss some paint over it.
Put a camera there but not necessarily for video per se. Run the video through MotionEye and then use it for occupancy/ motion detection in HA. You can drive all kinds of automations off of that like lights etc.
It's been days but after scrolling, no one's recommended to make a standard outlet sized hole, install a low voltage box, wrap/zip tie the wire into the wall, and put on a blank cover plate. You'll have plenty of time to think about it without having a wire sticking out of the wall. Or just paint right over it and forget about it.

What in the actual fuck? We need someone to explain this product
Not sure it even syncs time. Probably just uses power.
It better! You can get a PoE to DC adapter and wire that into a DC/battery powered clock for a small fraction of the price.
it does sync: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0022/6813/5526/files/ONTA12-BK_datasheet.pdf?v=1679588500

$100 is still ridiculous

A fully packed 42U rack
Bolt that bitch to the wall and add a watch your head sign.
Some drywall anchors should be fine to hold that up, right?
One on each side. And slap on that sign.

Why is it a bad place for an AP?
Decorative server rack
Iāll say put an AP or camera there just like the 45 other people who didnāt bother to read your whole post. /s Seriously though, maybe some kind of lighting, but really you should just make note of it in case you sell and the new owners want to utilize it, and tuck it back in the wall.
Push it back and cap it or cut it and spackle over it and paint.
Yeah, I'd leave it in there. Some day you might want it again
Maybe he could cut the excess cable, terminate it onto a keystone jack and put a port on the wall there in case he wants to use it down the road
I'd put a wall plate up there for it.
a poe eink screen that shows the latest news headlines and refreshes like every 30 min š¤
If you had power there you could use an articulating tv mount and put a TV there in the corner
r/tvtoohigh
There is probably poe TVS
Disco ball?
If you can't think of anything, I'd socket it so that you have easy access in the future in case you do find a need for it or something comes along. Unfortunately I can't find one for PoE, but I was thinking of a dimmable pir light so in the middle of the night you can have a dim light.
POE doorbell chime.
I would put in an AirGradient environmental sensor.
PoE speaker for playing audio in your kitchen.
Animatronic ceiling cat is watching you cut cucumber
Put in a WAP for more coverage
I suggest: Smart smoke alarm WiFi Audio Speaker (Sonos or equivalent) Motion Sensor
PoE speaker for whole home audio.
There is no such thing as a useless PoE drop.

I just laughed loud enough to get a few side glances, well done
Or the current defcon level? Great conversation starter if we have company.
PoE decorative subway sign board.
PoE chandelier
A Zigbee coordinator to make sure you have perfect Zigbee coverage for your smart home. [https://tubeszb.com/product/cc2652p2-based-zigbee-to-poe-coordinator-2023/](https://tubeszb.com/product/cc2652p2-based-zigbee-to-poe-coordinator-2023/)
A poe speaker, a wifi access point, a wall clock, led lighting there are a lot of things to do :)
Diy a big rgb dotmatrix display
HomeLab dashboard, Get the WAF high with your stats! /s A dash was not a joke, show your next appointments, car charge state, who is home, full screen picture when the doorbell rings. Other ideas: accesspoint, speaker
Got a raspberry running a Dakboard with calendars, weather forecast and a huge clock in the kitchen, but your location might a bit high up
A ticker with crypto prices, planes flying overhead, and server stats.
Camera. Youād be surprised how useful a camera could be. Earlier this year my kid sad he fell over and hit his head. He likes to joke and pretend a lot of different scenarios. I watched the footage of this and learned he had a mild seizure and fell down.
Ethernet powered air quality sensor? Probably have to custom build it, but might be cool
Can we talk about that track lighting and that shelf about your TV for a sec because wtf
Setup a Raspberry Pi as an environmental monitor that measures temperature, humidity, VOCs, etcā¦
Def turn it into a water feature
I would cut in a low volt box and put a blank plate on it OR terminate an ethernet jack on it. Honestly, thatās a fantastic place for an AP. Iād like to hear your rationale why itās not.
Motion detector light... Middle of the night snack runs don't be so difficult.
Camera or a lamp or something, poe lighting is pretty cool
āUselessāā¦ never
Mesh wifi
I would have used that for an aironet ap
Sound system maybe.
Why wouldnāt this make a good AP drop?
Not a good spot for an AP? Unpossible.
POE to USB to digital picture frame
Put a plate and cover it up if it's not needed
Put a camera there but not necessarily for video per se. Run the video through MotionEye and then use it for occupancy/ motion detection in HA. You can drive all kinds of automations off of that like lights etc.
Might be a bit high but a dashboard for weather, local traffic, calendar, etc...
Definitely need a PoE Camera so you can find out who is stealing your Eggo Waffles in the morning.
How about a WIFI AP.
