I think the Pros are overpriced, but the base models and the Airs are a steal. The Pros are also more luxury especially now since this gen focused on a nicer screen and being lighter. So overall, as a brand I think iPad is a good value with lots of SKU options.

_FoxDie_

Luxury has never been a great value item. This can be applied to vehicles as well.

redtag789

If only the Pro Pen is backward compatible... looks like folks in the creative industry and hobbyist artist need to shell out the extra dough just to use it on the pro.

_FoxDie_

It’s also compatible with the M2 Air.

redtag789

Oh is it??? Let me check it out. I'm on the mini now lol

_FoxDie_

Yes. It’s mostly due to the magnet array being different on the newer design. So if you were to try to dock the pencil pro on your older iPads, it won’t attach which is probably why it doesn’t pair properly.

LightcodeARTS

True but there are so many good alternates that you can use instead. Not everybody needs the completely useless haptic squeeze function.

redtag789

I already have a surface laptop studio. The ipad is more of a mobile workstation that I use for drafting comic pages before I spend time finishing it on the studio.

Bob_rules

Would also be nice if the regular Apple Pencil was forward compatible. That one blows my mind.

hhanggodo

He says the pros are a luxury. The basic ipad and the air are pretty good in terms of value

_FoxDie_

Yes - I was referring to just the Pro models.

fanofbreasts

Pros may be “overpriced” but will last you close to a decade. So you can buy a $700 and replace it in 2028 or $1000 and replace it in 2032. I don’t think either solution is wrong, but at least you get a little more oomph up front, plus oled.

[deleted]

At the rate of iPadOS progress the M1 Pro will last between 20 and 30 years of updates

saufcheung

Ipad pro 12.9 for 1k from 3 years ago remains one of my best buys. Well worth it

LightcodeARTS

Same. I actually think I got a golden unit because the sound and video are exquisite - and I work with both doing video editing, plus I'm getting the exact same if not faster data transfer speeds as the new pro m4. The only thing that bugs me is that I bought an 11 and not a 12.9 back then

saufcheung

My kids have the regular 10inch ipad so I knew the 11 wasnt for me. The extra 2 makes a big difference.

tsteele93

I have both because the 13 is great for some things like video and some drawing, and the 11 is great when you need more mobility.

LightcodeARTS

This is my exact dilemma right now. I love my older 11 inch because the audio is absolutely the best I think they've ever produced in the pro series. And it still has a year left under Apple care. I just I'm trying to find any way to justify keeping both LOL

Left-Cake398

That’s what she said!

LightcodeARTS

Hah! And I will share that I listed my iPad pro as a bundle with its new pencil and drawing paper screen protector etc , had someone ready to buy it and then I still ended up pulling it off of marketplace today because I love it so much. Now I'm trying to find any way possible to justify having two. It doesn't make any sense for me but I just can't let go of the old one but really love the bigger size of the newer one. Haaaalp! 🤣

tsteele93

I think that’s the point. The new ones offer little of value over the three year old models. Other than the OLED display, the new M4 is “governed” by the OS so there isn’t much advantage in buying one now.

LightcodeARTS

Agreed. But there is one that I forgot to mention and that is the wait. I'm challenged with grip issues and I actually purchased a Gen 6 iPad pro 12.9 in and found it too heavy within 20 minutes of using it. Even having it on my lap I just felt weighed down by it. So I guess it's all personal preference really

xInfoWarriorx

Yep, this is what I was thinking when I recently bought my MB Pro M3 Max and iPad Pro M4. These devices really can last 8-10+ years. Especially if you take good care of them.

LightcodeARTS

I agree except for something profound that I discovered while testing my new pro-it's the same hardware for data transfer as the 2018 unit. In fact my 2018 pro is faster! So you going to have to couple that and some other things that are the same as far as future proofing for 10 years, plus the fact that they're likely going to release a new model in the next couple of years - one that maybe even actually has all the cameras!

AdBackground311

A big part of why I bought the M4 iPad Pro is I feel like I’m getting the M4 chip at the start of its life cycle so it should last as long as any Mac product. Add in the gorgeous screen and outstanding speakers and I think it’s a great product.

mournthewolf

Yeah that’s how I view it too. In the grand scheme of things you are getting a lot of entertainment for the money. You can easily drop $1200 for much less entertainment.

dllemmr2

Strawman

k1ngrocc

I wouldn’t consider a mobile device without a high refresh screen. It’s just so noticeable for each and every swipe.

AdLate6470

The regular model and air are just as overpriced as the pro. lol. Nothing is a steal in apple lineup

Eyeluvflixs

You’re nuts for like $300 ish you can get an iPad that’s a great deal anyway you slice it for what you’re getting. But I guess YMMV.

Happy_Weakness_1144

Depends upon what you need, I guess. If your use cases fall directly into the strengths of that tablet, then I guess you're getting enough out of it that you'll probably feel like it's a good value for the dollar. If they don't, then you're probably thinking it's a massively expensive, over-engineered tablet let down by the software and will feel it's a terrible value for the dollar. But I think we can all agree that the Magic Keyboard is a complete rip off at its current price.

Marino4K

The Magic Keyboard pricing is what kept me from fully replacing my MacBook Air with the new M4 Pro.

[deleted]

Yes, “overpriced” is only true if you are being forced to buy it. Entry level iPads are great value if you must get an Apple tablet.

[deleted]

It may be a rip off, but it’s the best feeling keyboard I’ve ever typed on, granted I don’t own a MacBook.

Happy_Weakness_1144

I've had three, so as expensive as they are, I still bought them. I'm part of the problem, clearly, and not part of the solution.

[deleted]

Well if it’s any consolation, at least you’re consistent and dedicated to being part of the problem. I’m right here beside you, and I don’t like I’m going anywhere anytime soon lol.

TechExpert2910

i have mechanical keyboards that cost a tenth of what the magic keyboard cost (no kidding), and they feel much better to type on. for context, i’m typing this on the M4 iPad Pro 13” Magic Keyboard.

knowledgepanda1

Could you give recommendations and brand of these keyboards please?

rickatk

Logitech mechanical keys Mac version.

Arucious

is that statement specific to the new one? Or do you feel that way about the outgoing generation too?

[deleted]

It is specific to the new one, my mentor/boss has the M2 and to me it is not the same.

LightcodeARTS

I opted out of the excessive $450 magic keyboard combo and instead bought a standalone apple trackpad and keyboard. Not only is it the same feel, the trackpad is triple the size and both of them work with other devices. Win - win!

nopowernowork

I can imagine some use cases of that, but hard to imagine it is a good value. Good work done but still overpriced.

brolasagna

The keyboard is overpriced. The iPad itself is priced similarly to its closest competitor, Samsung S9/Plus/Ultra

Static_o

Bought one for $40 if it wasn’t for that I wouldn’t have it. Someone on Amazon listed it as a folio and when it came I was like oh crap a Magic Keyboard. Couldn’t find it again but hey happy accident.

Stang68x

Agreed. The iPad itself is quite an amazing piece of technology and in my opinion worth a premium.

bayoughozt

I just got a Tab S9 Ultra 512gb in perfect condition for $850.

brolasagna

Good on ya! They’re bound to be updated soon, so the price drop makes sense. I was talking about MSRP.

bayoughozt

I never pay MSRP. It seems insane to me to do so. Like the maxed out new M4 is 2499 LMAO!!!!!!! and that MK price is just laughable.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MultiMarcus

Sure, because they aren’t selling that well. And obviously sale prices aren’t the ones we use to compare.

SamsungAppleOnePlus

I wouldn't say so personally. I think the Magic Keyboards are overpriced (even if great). You do get the hardware you pay for when buying an iPad. If you're buying for the current capabilities of an iPad, and not expecting it to run MacOS in 2 years at least.

ConfectionGloomy5009

Not really, considering with iPadOS 18, an M1 tablet can do almost anything an M2 and M4 can. Take your pick but just like any prior tech you’re paying more for the latest. Plus it’s clear that Apple wants you to use iPad as an iPad and not as a Mac, even though iPad does have a few MacOS-like features. Just like the iPhone, it’s really all about the APPS on iPad.

duuudewhat

Why…wouldn’t an older product do the same as the newer one? I don’t even get this argument. That’s like buying a new MacBook Air when you had a 2020 one and being like “well the new one does the same stuff as the old one”. Like yeah no shit. It’s the same product

ivanhoek

They are cheaper. The iPad starts at $350. You do realize you don't HAVE to buy the most expensive and most capable model, right?

nopowernowork

How is this related? Pro is too expensive, there is no justification to its price for sure, it is twice as high as in 2017. No other Apple device has experienced such a price jump, some that have a lot more features and became higher quality, even gotten cheaper.

KMFN

In the same timeframe the 7+ to 15 Pro Max has gone up by 56% the iPads have gone up 62% (12.9 2nd gen to 13"). So it's pretty similar, it would've been a flat 50% if not for the 100 increase this gen. So, very comparable.

Remy149

Plenty of Apple products have got increases in price most macs jump up in price every time there is a physical design change and my iPhone 15 pro max cost just as much as my m4 iPad Pro

ivanhoek

It's related... if the ipad pro is too expensive for you, don't buy the ipad pro. Seems pretty simple.

bruh-iunno

I'm not too sure why the Pro exists other than just being a nice iPad but the iPads are very very good at the things they're good at, like art, notes, media consumption, etc. The sentiment goin around and which I share is that the hardware is so good and basically the same stuff in their laptops that their software should be able to to all the stuff the laptops can do too but can't really. Like, my ten year old 80 dollar 2in1 can do all the things an iPad can, if a little poorly in some regards, but the iPad can't do all the things it can, at least for my uses, which kinda sucks cause i'd really like to replace my laptops with an iPad. I have to iterate again though that for the things they're good at, they're really really good at it, they're popular for a reason

Remy149

The iPad Pro exists to introduce the most state of the art and expensive features that can eventually trickle down to the less pricey models over time. I use my iPad Pro more than my MacBook but I also don’t expect it to be a full laptop replacement.

nopowernowork

So far no Pro features have been moved to cheaper models, pencil is not one of them, it was moved to normal iPads right away. Pros still have everything I want that is missing from Air.

muser0808

So far but eventually they will. USB c, Face ID, Smart Connector etc were passed down.

KMFN

Thats not true it wasn't until the 6th gen iPad that they added pencil support. Took about 2 years to move on from the Pros. Other than that i would say there are no real meaningful features that has actually trickled down to even the Air. No promotion. Since the Air 2 we basically haven't seen a meaningful change in screen tech. No quad speakers. M chips perhaps, instead of A is the only other "pro" spec that has made an impact i would say. Other than that just whatever spec bumps. You could say the design of the Air was taken from the Pros i guess, but again. We expect them to update the design anyway with each couple of generations.

Arucious

Been waiting for that 120hz screen to trickle down for quite some time now

bayoughozt

Your expectation is only b/c Apple limits the capable hardware. It *SHOULD* have both the creative functions and the core laptop functions. Apple chooses to prevent that and why? For profit motive. F them.

Remy149

I don’t need my iPad to be a complete 2 in 1. Why do yall keep talking as if others have to desire the same things as you? I’d rather have two devices perfectly suited for the tasks I need them for then 1 device that isn’t great at anything. Notice even surface devices are just windows with touch features and limited tablet apps. I don’t want to end up with a tablet relying on web apps like on macOS. It’s even cheaper for the average use to buy a MacBook Air and a 10th generation iPad then buying an iPad Pro with all the accessories. I like that the magic keyboard is an optional accessory I never have to buy. The Apple Pencil I couldn’t imagine living without though

bayoughozt

I didn’t mean to convey that. Only speaking for me, and I am an iPad Pro fan for years. For me, the failure to fix stupid things is enough to move on, but for others not, and that’s fine.

bafrad

Everythign is 'limited' if you artifically expect something. I do not see the ipad as limited. It's an intentional device designed to be focused. If it works for you it's not overpriced, if it doesn't, then don't buy it. Just because you don't like it, and you don't understand why people would buy it doesn't make it limited or overpriced. You do not have to buy every apple product out there.

Remy149

100% agree I use my iPad daily and more then my MacBook. I just upgraded from a 2018 pro to the m4 and if I get the same 6 years out of it I think it’s money well spent.

nopowernowork

People can buy it meaning it is still overpriced. People buy Porsche even though it is overpriced. Does not mean an iPad Pro is a bad choice, but there is no justification to its price for sure, it is twice as high as in 2017. No other Apple device has experienced such a price jump, some that have a lot more features and became higher quality, even gotten cheaper.

bafrad

Overpriced is subjective to what one finds the worth in. So you can't make a blanket statement saying something like an ipad pro is over priced. There are plenty of justifications for its price.

InfiniteHench

No. If I want a Mac I’d buy a Mac. The iPad being incredibly thin and uniquely portable with a slimmed down OS _is a feature, not a bug_ or something missing. It can’t be the Simpsons Car of devices.

beerstearns

I think the higher-end pro’s are, since imo at $2000+ its reasonable to be looking for a proper combo device for people who don’t want lug around both a tablet and Mac on work trips and stuff. The other iPads I think are appropriately priced and I think the entry-level pro’s are fine.

plugfred

I definitely didnt need the iPad Pro back in 2019 but it's still around and has no signs of slowing down

MrScarfaceX

Same people are whining because they want an Apple 2-n-1. They are not getting a touchscreen Mac, so they want the iPad Pro to run MacOS. They basically want a Surface so they don't have to buy a Macbook and an IPad. So they bitch and bitch until hoping Apple will relent.

PsychologicalEcho726

Why the hostility? What's so wrong with pushing for features you can benefit from? I interact with it the same way with my iPad and Magic Keyboard literally the same as I interact with my macbook. Why should the operating system be so much less feature rich, just because I have the possibility of detaching the iPad and using it as a tablet? I get that just slapping MacOS on the iPad or trying to make touch work on MacOS would be a nightmare and the iPad would loose its purpose, but if you already make a keyboard with trackpad that allow it to be used as a laptop, just add some of the functionality that a laptop offers. It's just weird having something that looks like a laptop, has the chip of a laptop, the keyboard and trackpad as a laptop, but still behaves fundamentally like tablet. I love my iPad, but I would love it even more, if it could do more. I'm convinced apple could find a way to not alter the current iPad-like behaviour and add some Laptop-class feautes if connected to the keyboard. It just makes sense.

Nate379

I feel as though Apple doesn't want to encourage development in a direction that makes the iPad less useful when it's NOT attached to the keyboard and trackpad, and I don't think that's necessarily a bad way to look at it. I have a keyboard and trackpad for my iPad, but I fully expect it to not be needed to do what I need to do on the iPad, it's just a convenience I can add when I want it. That said, it would be nice if some apps were a bit better with feature parity to the Mac / PC counterparts.

PsychologicalEcho726

I feel exactly the opposite. Currently the keyboard and Trackpad are a little strange for the product like it is today. With the magoz keyboard you use it like a laptop, but the UI was made for a tablet. That doesn't really make sense. The magic keyboard is a very expensive pro-exclusive accessory and makes the iPad basically into a laptop. I feel like it would make just too much sense to have a "pro-mode" when docked. It would adjust the UI to the way you use the device from tablet to Laptop. It would instantly make the magic keyboard a way better deal for the majority of people (I don't have one, but would certainly buy one if it actually were useful to me) and it would also differentiate the pro from the air models in a functional way. It's not just nicer screen and sleeker design, the upgrade from the Air to the Pro would be so much easier to sell. I don't know why they aren't doing it. It just seems like a nobrainer. Especially with the magic keyboard, that they have even improved. I hope they are working on something like that and wait till they get it right...

Icy_Requirement_5843

Thankfully most people don't have your mindset and we have companies that actually grow based off feedback and promote competition instead of stagnant overpriced and limited options.

MrScarfaceX

Feedback? Whining. Apple has specific idea what the iPad is. Running a laptop/desktop OS is not it. They add things in the future, but Apple wants people to buy 2 distinct devices.

Axle_65

My iPad Pro does plenty for the cost. Especially ever since big music software names started joining the market it’s been a very capable device well worth its cost.

Remy149

They leave out the fact that the 13” m4 iPad only starts at $100 more than the iPhone 15 pro max.

Technologytwitt

Limited by who's definition?? You're only seeing/hearing this from a small number of people. There have been 10's of millions of iPad sold in each/every quarter for years, I think that alone is a testament to the huge volume of satisfaction for the device. Just because it may not do what YOU expect, doesn't make it limited.

pluush

Yeah, especially on Reddit with other Redditors building the echo chamber

Remy149

I keep saying this a very loud and vocal group online and tech focused content creators keep complaining an iPad isn’t a full MacBook replacement. The average consumer doesn’t want it to be a MacBook and even those who attach a keyboard are only doing so to handle email or word processing.

cbj24

I use the keyboard for image editor shortcuts like a laptop but it’s not a laptop to me

Remy149

I’ve never once connected my iPad to a keyboard but I use an Apple Pencil for note taking daily.

PsychologicalEcho726

Yeah, the ones attaching the keyboard are doing so to handle email or word processing, because it's all you can do. Isn't that a little weird? I love my iPad for note taking. I use it everyday for hours. I had a surface Laptop and Surface Book and I have to say, that the iPad is simply a huge improvement over both. But in combination with the keyboard the iPad just fundamentally transforms in a laptop device. It's not touch focused anymore, it's focused on input with keyboard and trackpad. Why is that change not reflected in the UI? It would just make total sense to me, if a Tablet that I dock into a keyboard case would allow more Laptop-like features. I don't want the iPad to be a FULL Macbook replacement, I just want it to be able to do some of the work I do on my Mac, so that I don't have to take two devices, even if I only intend to do some light work.

RandyMallardsFlights

The hardware is high spec and when its not faulty like my keyboard case its premium with a top screen and 4 decent speakers and while I think the PRO should have at least 12GB of ram enabled, 8GB with this CPU and GPU makes it a little beast but 12gb would be much better but it is held back by the Phone-like OS and if you want proof install the Screwfix app not only is it the Phone app ported to iPad its done so badly it misses off the offer prices next to the none-offer prices on the item listings. If they can't give us a fuller fat OS Android runs a proper customizable version of browsers

RandyMallardsFlights

Eh I don't know why that posted i was still typing lol, If they can't give us a fuller fat OS then at least enforce standards to make Devs make a proper iPad version of apps to fit the full screen.

Icy_Requirement_5843

EVERY single video of the iPad always debuts with the same line "It's about 90% there". Even in the real-world, a classic example is my university when I was a student started with iPads but ended up moving to Surface line up because of the software limitations. My current workplace was offered iPads for all staff, but refused for Windows devices too (again software limitations, trying to do basics from print from cloud services, access full office suite, file management and network administration controls etc) Not everyone using an iPad is an elderly person watching YouTube or a child playing candy crush.

Technologytwitt

You’re basically proving my point…. Buy the iPad for what it does and for what it’s capable of, not for what YOU want it to do.

Icy_Requirement_5843

I recommend you read this article to understand, [https://www.macstories.net/stories/not-an-ipad-pro-review/#inefficiency-by-a-thousand-cuts](https://www.macstories.net/stories/not-an-ipad-pro-review/#inefficiency-by-a-thousand-cuts)

Technologytwitt

And you read this one: https://michael.team/ipadv/?t

Icy_Requirement_5843

He literally has a point called “I get 90% of my work done” You realise that with the voice of consumers giving feedback, it’s the reason Apple introduced pro software like Logic and Finalcut. People are not saying make the ipad a Mac, people are saying we need to improve iPadOS

Technologytwitt

Well, you made it to the 3rd bullet point….LOL. Bro I get you, feedback is great and there will continue to be developers who will make their applications work on iPad. The primary point of the article was where he said: I expect my computer to be light, portable, beautiful and have an optional keyboard, a pencil, 5G connectivity and be so much more than just a traditional laptop. To me it’s a next-gen machine Steve Jobs has envisioned. It really is much better at many things that traditional computers also can do, and on top of that it can do and be so much more!

Bright-Albatross-234

In my experience apps are limited vs their website or other platforms. I just started using zoom for piano lessons and I learned the hard way that you can’t record locally on iOS, which I see no reason for other than to get people to pay for their cloud service. Google Calendar is missing plenty of features vs the website. I could go on. I think it’s a real shame because I really want my iPad to replace a MacBook and there’s no reason to limit basic functionality in apps other than corporate greed. I realize that’s not where apple and app makers are though, but it’s frustrating nonetheless.

Technologytwitt

OK, but that's also been beaten to death...Apple didn't design the iPad to replace the MacBook. Furthermore, it doesn't make sense to me that your dissatiisfaction is targeted towards the iPad rather than Zoom. > because I really want my iPad to replace a MacBook

TrustButVerifyFirst

I use a 12.9 strictly for sheet music using the iGigBook app and it's perfect with respect to form factor, battery life and computing power for this purpose.

FederalEuropeanUnion

Apple in general is overpriced but you pay for convenience. If you haven’t used other tablets or operating systems, you won’t know just how much things don’t fit together versus Apple.

EmergencyJuice154

I was thinking of getting a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro.

paladindan

Depends on what you plan to do with it. Media consumption and browser-based work? Yes. Video/photo editing? No, but be prepared to hate the iPadOS file system. Drawing? No. Video games? Other than a couple games, yeah.

rickatk

What’s wrong with the iPadOS filing system?

migs_003

It doesn't consider images files as files. But that's more of an apple thing it seems

Remy149

You’d be surprised how many people aren’t good at navigating a traditional file system. I work with so many people who save so many things to their desktop just to avoid having to deal with a file system. I have one coworker who saves everything to the local drive and emails stuff to himself to access it between work and home instead of just saving everything to our personal network drives.

migs_003

They dumbs.

Remy149

People aren’t as tech literate as you would think.

Master_Ad1017

It does, how exactly you it’s not?

migs_003

Go to camera... take a pic... now go to files app... find that photo in there. Do not open gallery. Let me know how it goes.

Master_Ad1017

So because camera send something directly to Photos you said it's not treating images as files? LMFAO I also don't even have the audio and video files I downloaded through Apple Music, Spotify, Netflix, YouTube, etc in my android file system so by your logic it means android also don't treat them as files too?

migs_003

Apple music, Spotify, Netflix, youtube...?? You do know streamingbdoesnt download the media onto your phone to store, right? Also if and when you have a download option for those apps they will become files within your system but often not as a playable file outside of said app. Would be a very specific file type. Unlike photos which are most often jpegs and are treated as a non file type. Can't be found in any directory outside of gallery

Master_Ad1017

Your claim is "Files app didn't treat images as a file". Images are any kind of jpg, png, psd, etc. which is literally exists and can be previewed inside the app itself, it can be moved around, duplicated, deleted, renamed, open to any apps that supports them. But then you talk about Photos? LMFAO Photos literally works exactly like those I mentioned. Hence why it the picture you just taken in some phones immediately appear in all of your devices. That's why it have import and export features where you can choose what extension you want to have it as a "file"

AdMore3859

the pros are 100% overpriced, 90% of what a pro can do, can be done for a lot, a whole lot less on a Air/mini//Budget iPad

Naus1987

Isn't the basic bitch iPad like 350 bucks? Probably the best value for a tablet out there. The pro costs more, but if you're not using the pencil you don't need one. So you have to compare it to other products that use pencils

Less_Party

I just kinda resent that it's called 'Pro' when the OS makes it sort of fundamentally a nightmare to fit into any sort of sane workflow where assets need to either get onto or off of the iPad. Like you either need to be all cloud everything or just work in a way where *everything* happens on the device and then gets uploaded somewhere directly from the iPad. Like, the current Macbook Pro actually has tons of features that make sense for professionals which are lacking on the MBA, the iPad Pro is just a fancier iPad.

Turbulent-Lawyer7618

I don’t understand why so many people still complaining to this day, it’s an iPad if you need to professional stuff just buy MacBook. Literally no one is forcing anyone to buy iPad. If you find your use case for iPad buy and enjoy, otherwise just buy pc or Mac and move on!

Trampo_line00

The iPad Pros are overpriced unless you’re an artist who utilises the hardware.

s2nders

I think it could be a little bit cheaper but you are really paying the premium price for the future development of apple products which isnt cheap. And i see the ipad as an luxury item not as essential as a laptop. The ipad really shines when you are traveling, and even than you can get away with a laptop or your iphone for the most part. Would i enjoy mac os on the ipad? yes , but i know that would step on the macbook line up. why get customers to buy one product when you can convince them to buy two? and i dont blame them for it when customers prefer buying the ipad over other alternative tablets. I currently hold a ipad air , i may switch to a mini or samsung tablet ( it offers a little bit more freedom than the ipad) but right now im not trying to spend anymore money.

Yell-Dead-Cell

Current iPads are probably overkill for the average user but the option is there for people to buy an older one for much cheaper or if they buy a new one they can keep it for a long time before upgrading.

Remy149

Anything can be considered as over priced from one person point of view to the next. I use my iPad Pro daily and plan to keep it the same 6 years I had the last one. So for me the price is fine. For someone who just wants a shinty new toy they may barely use it probably is overpriced. I tell most people who ask me what to buy to get the 10th gen or an air and to never buy it directly from Apple past the release month due to cheaper prices at 3rd party stores

WeaveGuard

Only the pros are expensive. The base ipad is an excellent value especially if you are a student or if you want to consume content and journaling. I owned ipad 9 for 2 years and it is amazing for what my casual uses of journalling and reading. I only upgrade to pro because oled screen makes the experience even better and I ended up paying 400$ after tax instead of the full price.

famousgirl95

i think the features they provide are great! i think they are overpriced in the same way that iphones, AirPods, and macbooks are overpriced. we are definitely paying an upcharge for that apple logo.

crazydoc253

Yes.

Difficult-Ad-1132

I'd say it's about the overall value it provides. And that value increases when you have more Apple devices.

coraltrek

I use mine as a drawing art tool. Comparing the price of the iPad, pencil, procreate it is still cheaper than a Wacom cintique and photoshop.

seanroberts196

The problem is that some people are buying them and thinking that they can use them as a laptop. It's a different device for different uses and not a touch screen macbook. they are for taking notes / watching media and some design stuff. People just buy hoping for a device that the iPad will never be.

abnthug

I mean honestly everything is limited in certain aspects. I think the iPad is great. The thing is now generally the products are so good that it’s hard to justify upgrading regularly which can make the annual releases seem underwhelming. I love my iPad Pro. I recently went down the rabbit hole of seeing if I could replace my MacBook Pro with the iPad Pro solely and for my use case I can’t. Both machines are great and offer play roles uniquely.

Suspect4pe

It’s a device that fits specific needs. If it’s worth the money is entirely subjective. I think it is and I paid the price for one. That doesn’t mean it’ll be that for everyone.

Natural_Situation401

Everything from Apple is overpriced. It’s a premium company with a premium brand. You want the Apple experience, you’ll pay for it, just like for a nice BMW which is also overpriced. The iPads are not underpowered or limited, iPad Pro lineup is by far the best tablet on the market and there’s nothing that comes even close. In my case it’s well worth the investment because it allows me to be more productive without having to carry my laptop with me everywhere. I have an 11 inch m4 model with the Magic Keyboard and it’s very portable and comfortable to carry, and also to do the stuff I need to do. And I also enjoy premium products with a good user experience so I’m willing to pay for it because I can afford it.

Rooster976

It’s like fender Princeton guitar tube amps that are 4X more expensive than the solid state modeling amps that have hundreds of amp tones when the fender only has one amazing tone. For some people it’s worth it because it does the tone it does a bit better. My reason is being a very visual person I love it. Best screen you can buy for doing different forms of art. Procreate is the best drawing software and it’s on iPad so I’m willing to pay stupid money for the $20 app or whatever it is these days. Program is heaven sent if you ask me. I’ll be happy when the new pencil features are added.

On-The-Rails

Views on iPad vary. I own and use three daily for different purposes — two Pro’s and a Mini 6, along with my iPhone 15Plus. (I also use Windows 10 and MacOS on a MacBook Pro M2). The iPads are well worth the expense in my mind. And the Apple ecosystem is well supported by Apple and App vendors. I also recently purchased a new Android — Android OS 14. Just for comparison and to have a cheap device to carry a few places. While yes it was a lot cheaper, I already miss the tight platform integration I have with every other device I own. And worse yet if I want the same app to use on both iOS and Android, and its a chargeable app, I have to pay double. With iPad/iPhone I just pay once and use on all my devices. I think the economies of Android are just a false story.

Any-Job-4094

iPads are cheaper for the limited features. Look at MacBook Pro costs vs your iPad Pro. I can get to an extent wanting a little more out of the iPad os, but for most of us, iPad os fits our personal and work needs just fine. Sure, it’s getting a little overkill getting such strong processors in iPads these days for what they do, but iPad os is what iPad os has always been. If you buy the device for what you hope it may be, vs what it is and has been, that’s on you. If you feel that iPad is won’t work for your use case, buy a MacBook. They won’t make the iPad be able to completely make one of their product lines completely obsolete. The hopes of getting Mac OS on an iPad seems like a far stretch, and in real amazed how many people where expecting it with iOS 18.

fakeworldwonderland

If you fall into the niche that's fine. If not, that's fine too. I can't find a better photo editing tablet after months of research so... Now im an ex-apple hater balls deep in the apple system. Are there flaws? Sure. But it works for what i need, which is to run lightroom and i don't care about the rest.

[deleted]

It’s the 80/20 split. You pay 80% more for an extra 20% of luxury, while the baseline IPad is perfect for 80% of people in need of an iPad. Obviously not real numbers but it works.

ajts

It's only "limited" if you expect it to do everything a laptop can do, in the same exact way laptops do things. As a tablet, no it’s not “limited.”

zubeye

99% of usage is safari and YouTube style things I would guess. they add just enough stuff to differentiate

wafflingcharlie

I use my iPad Pro M1 as my only computer and it is great for me, better than my Mac book by a lot. I got the iPhone max, and now I open my iPad far less. Everything I need is in the cloud. Computing is over rated. I’m not designing orbits 🤣🤣

rickatk

The thing I don’t like with iPad Pro is that I have to buy more storage in order to get more RAM. The two should not be linked.

Remy149

What exactly are you using the iPad for that you need the additional ram? I had my 2018 pro for 6 years and never felt restricted doing anything

rickatk

I find I tend to leave too many apps open. This causes hang ups over time. I have to remember to close the apps so I can keep working. 256Gb SSD, 16Gb is just right for me.

Objective-Sky-9953

I’ve got each of the last 3 generations of the larger screen iPad Pro. Overpriced? Yes, but provides a great experience. I feel like the m4 oled is the most reasonable priced of the 3 on the basis I feel I got the most value from the m4 13s screen

DannyHughesBJJ

Entirely depends on your use case. I had a MacBook Air m1. I watch content, play football manager, play GeForce now and edit photos on Lightroom…… I find all of those are better experiences on the iPad. So for me getting the m4 iPad Pro was worth it

Ok_Minimum6419

Yes.

Honda_TypeR

iPad is a good price for what you get, best tablet maker on market, great price, most of the experience of owning an iPad on the cheap (including using pen) iPad Air starts getting into overpriced territory but decently priced for what you get and there are some nice upgrades that gives you a bit more of a premium ipad experience. iPad Pro has all the bells and whistles of the lineup, but definitely overpriced for what you get. To buy the pro you need to consider you’re in full on laptop price territory and even MacBook Pro territory if you get the keyboard with iPad Pro too. Is Pro a bad purchase then? Well if you want it, or need that hardware for something specific (that part getting harder to justify), or you know you’ll get a lot of use out of it…. Then It can be justified. You should ask yourself though if you really need the pro vs the iPad or iPad Air though for what you’re doing. Bigger screen may be a valid need, but you can get a big screen on air. Better processor and ram may be valid but less so as all the models continue to upgrade and we are held back by limited macOS apps. There are other points like better sound better quality screen, etc…but it’s not like you’ll have a miserable experience for general use on a new base level iPad. Pro boils down to needs and willingness to spend cash and be comfortable with the fact you’re definitely getting taken for a little bit of a ride because it’s the flagship new model. You could ask this same question with most cars too. Base model or their top of the line fully load model. Only you can say if it’s worth it to you. The specs are easy enough to compare right from apples site, beyond that you gotta figure it out.

Conscious_Scholar_87

iPad mini 256gb is definitely overpriced.

Timbukstu2019

How is a 13” iPad air a steal? Isn’t the M2 12.9 pro the real steal? All the power you need and a mini led screen to boot. For 29 dollars more than the 13” air as a refurb from Apple.

kelev

I don’t think so. There are so many good options for low price entry point iPads. I recently bought a 512 M4 13” and while it’s expensive, it feels worth it to me. I played with all available models in the store and was upgrading from an Air 4 (that I bought to upgrade from an iPad 9). You can get a cheap iPad that will do everything you need it to do. If you want to go for extravagance, you can spend a bit more, but it’s absolutely not required to have a very competent device.

saintmsent

People mostly refer to the Pros when talking about iPads being overpriced. In that sense, I agree. You can't use it for most "Pro" workflows, so for professionals, a MacBook is quite often a better choice. And for non-Pro usage the price is ridiculous Other models, however, are reasonably priced. My in-laws love their iPad Airs, and for the stuff you're getting, I think the price is justifiable. It's a great media and web browsing device with a gorgeous screen for 600 bucks. For that use case, they don't need full desktop OS functionality

audioman1999

I’m happy with my iPad mini. Very reasonably priced.

Mysterious_Might8875

I think iPads are priced pretty fairly, I just think too many people own them and use them identically to their phones or MacBooks when an iPad is its own thing. If all you want to do is watch videos and play games, it’s going to seem more expensive to you than to me, who uses an iPad for drawing and animation. I use fewer apps than the average user, but they’re where I intentionally spend all of my time, so I see it as a bargain.

SnooDoubts5546

Well for me the cost per day of use is way cheaper than most things I own,

Active_NPC

Remove the pro name and just give it a quality OLED and snappy functionality and unlimited apps and great battery life —— 1000 dollars. A gaming laptop with 2 hour battery life and poor screen - 899-1000.. a Samsung laptop with oled and full blown windows 1200+. Asus oled windows machine 999+.. this fits a price window.. just the word pro has people going nuts..

Tamil_Volk

Cheapest Air is a steal with the current software IMO. ( I am an artist, so I mostly use it for drawing ).

26fm65

Same with all cars, every car have 4 tires. Except some are faster, more luxury , premium etc. Buy whatever you think is good for you. I can use the pro for 5yrs so it still cheap for me.

Bossman1086

Objectively, the Pros are overpriced with how limited they are. The rest of the lineup is fine. But when you stick such a powerful SoC inside with 8 or 16 GB of RAM and then limit that in software, it's hard to say you're getting the value you paid for at $999 starting price. That doesn't mean that you can't find it worth the price regardless of that. I bought one and I like it. It's a luxury for me and not something I'm using to replace a laptop or anything like that. But I *would* get more use out of it if Apple unleashed it and allowed background tasks, improved multitasking, and gave us proper development tools like virtualization, a terminal app, and Xcode.

Fun-Meringue-732

All Apple products are overpriced lol. I still buy them though.

CorrectBad2427

Air is definitely a good deal rn, Pro seems a bit overpriced tho

wolf-troop

I think it depends on what you need them. For someone that definitely needs them for Creativity, Entertainment, Business ETC than you can say they are definitely worth it. For others that just want to watch a lot of Content and have the ability to do other things than yes, it even still might be worth it. Since the Displays are amazing not to mention the Speakers. They Pros have something that no other iPad on the Line-Up can Match and that is in Hardware and Software. So, no and yes. Even the cheapest iPads can be Overpriced if you buy without needing them. These iPads Genuinely exude their excellence. When you hold them you know you did not get Ripped Off. That is how you now a Product is worth it. If you look at the people that have bought the new M4 iPad Pro 13" or 11" they are Happy they now they got there Moneys Worth. - We got the Latest and Greatest Chip with the M4 which Surprisingly the iPad is the first to get it. - We also got the Beautiful OLED Display with an Amazing Contrast. - We also got cutting edge Brightness with the Tandem OLED at 1,000 Nits for Regular Content which is INSANE! and 1,600 for HDR. On OLED that is Amazing! - We also got the ability to play some Amazing Triple A Games that we would have never been able to play before. Natively. (For Gamers). - New Landscape Camera Position - The Thinnest iPads Ever Made I mean I can keep going on. Not to mention there is also a lot of stuff that they have with the Software side of things. As well as the addition of the Badass New Magic Keyboard for people that Need it. I did not. At the end of the day, THE IS IT WORTH IT ? is Very Subjective and should be taken in a case by case basis. The Overpriced ? I personally think they are not. If you look at the other High End Tablets from Microsoft, Samsung and so on. You will see that on the Contrary they iPad Pros for what they can accomplish, Hardware and what they have in them are a lot better priced. I mean they usually beat every other High End Tablet out there in every Aspect. Not to mention most of those Tablets are Hundreds more Expensive than the iPad Pros for the same Entry Level.

NoAge422

I cannot justify spending over a grand on a big iphone

Dragonthorn1217

I think they're appropriately priced for what they provide, depending on your use case. As a digital artist, the Pros offer insane value since the alternative is getting a laptop and a separate display tablet. There are cheaper options but they are not nearly as good as an IPad. Even w/ the software limitations. If all you do is content consumption, then yes I think getting the Pros just for that is too much and you'd probably be better off with the base or Air versions.

TruthTeller-2020

Yes, without question. Overpriced.

babybirdhome2

What everyone fails to recognize is that Apple sits on the 20% side of the 80/20 rule. You're paying more for the extra quality that Apple engineers into their products whether you care about that or not. It still costs money to get there. You can buy plenty of products from companies that don't sit on that end of the spectrum and pay accordingly. In fact, 90% of the time, if you buy a product from a company that sits on the 80% side of the 80/20 rule, you're actually paying more for more profit margin and less quality than you are for an Apple product. And there's a good chance that for most people, that's perfectly adequate, and a better value proposition. It doesn't change the facts on the ground, though.

ggezboye

IMO overpriced relative to another capable Android. One of my dilemma this pandemic (2021) is whether to buy an iPad or a Lenovo tablet but I opted for the Lenovo Xiaoxin Pad Pro 2021. Base version of the Android tablet is 128GB for 325USD with OLED and USB 3 + video-out support already. For example I can watch Netflix to any TV with HDMI port using the tablet and a dongle and connect to my Denon home theater via BT. As far as I know, an iPad will not do this especially at same pricepoint. Accessories are overpriced in Apple ecosystem. Lenovo Active Pen with 4096 levels: only 25USD Lenovo magnetic Kickstand + magnetic keyboard: only 35USD Well the Android tablet I have satisfies my drawing needs (Concepts), and my media consumption subscriptions (Netflix, Bilibili, Youtube). Anything higher priced are just pure luxury to be honest. I don't game with my tablet, maybe other people do play high-end games with their tablet, that case actually is a valid advantage of iPads.

Zestyclose_Cake_5644

What I’ll do if I’m in charge: Lineup: iPad (2 sizes, Mini size and 11-inch size) iPad Pro (OLED or LCD, mini size, 11 and 13 inches) iPadOS only Finder redesigned and Preview redesigned for touch Roundtrip FCP and LP (already here) with iPad and Mac, one time purchase option Stop forcing Stage Manager on external display, Split View + Slideover is perfect if you master it with shortcuts Allow background activity Allow multiple audio streaming sources Clamshell mode More shortcuts + fix command tab then Q and command space Add iPhone mirroring to iPad maybe as slideover Add “desktop” widget to allow temporary storage of drag and drop. Allow for a smaller pointer Kill Pencil 1 and 2. Only Pro and non-Pro but with wireless charging on both All low end iPads get USBC, All Pros get headphone jack, SD card, and Thunderbolt Add latest iPhone Pro camera to iPad Pro Improve Sidecar with Macs Allow dragging certain Apple apps to iPad from Mac with Handoff Include a high wattage charging brick with the iPad Pros Free headphone jack adapter in the box for base iPads RAM upgrades separate from CPU and GPU upgrades Cancel stupid nano textured glass Free cloth with all iPads (seriously) Charging port on Magic Keyboard becomes MagSafe to match the ones on the MacBooks and the Magic Keyboard comes with a free color matched MagSafe cable So the idea is to keep iPadOS but make it still limited and remove the unnecessary frustrations. Some might be able to use an iPad only and be happy. I honestly thing that Stage Manager is such a wrong move from Apple and it is horrible on both Mac and iPad. Mainly because open new apps open them in a new stage and there is no keyboard shortcuts that works with Stage Manager well, not even switching between stages. The current lineup is also horrible and the iPad Air should be replaced by the Pros, the only distinction being the display. For the chip, I think users can choose to get the binned M4, maybe with like 8 cores instead of the current 9/10, there is no need for a powerful chip here. Just focus on the Neural Engine needed for the local AI features. Reserve the cores for MacBooks instead. I also think that Apple should finally make touchscreen Macs and add a feature called Pencil Continuity which allows the Apple Pencil paired with your iPad to work across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

Salad_Designer

Depends on what you want out of an iPad. I use on an iPad 9: - reminders/todoist - youtube for cooking & entertainment while doing house chores - research amazon items on bigger screen - facetime so I can see friends/fam easier instead of on a small screen. Those things work well for me. If you want an iPad to be a complete all-in-one solution that can fully replace a pc or mac then I would lower expectations. Ipad’s can work for some people and their job requirements but probably more niche than commonplace. It is essentially a bigger iphone. And that is what I treat it as. Manage tasks and schedules. Learning Entertainment. The ones hoping it could and should be something else than what they purchased will continue hoping and waiting.

duuudewhat

If they were overpriced people wouldn’t pay it. They price it at which they sell. So in that regard, no

Thenachopacho

Yes. Bought one to use as a laptop. It is not a laptop. Returned it and got myself a slim 14 inch laptop. Only slightly bigger than a 12.9 pro and way more useful for what I do

The-BEAST

No.

VZYGOD

Pros are overpriced. As much as I love my iPad Pro it’s still a companion device and can’t replace everything demand of a full desktop machine. I got mine used for about $1.1K NZD used and that was a 11” M1 256gb cellular paid around an extra $400nzd for a used Magic Keyboard and pencil 2nd gen. If $1.6k NZD gets you what i got I’d say that would be better priced for a new iPad Pro. It’s laughable how much the new magic keyboards cost, like you could literally buy a MacBook Air new for less and you’ll have even more function and soon iPhone mirroring making it even closer to a touch less iPad. It only seems well priced if you are using it as a legit portable reference/field monitor for video and photo production work. If you compare the price of a new 11” it’s basically the same price as some of Small HDs 7” camera monitors and it’s bigger and has far more function. Apple should really lean into making this device a capable monitor with its thunderbolt connection. I’m sure lots of people would love to use this as a portable display for their game consoles like PS5 that support HDMI 2.1 with 4K 120hz and HDR. As of now the beautiful new displays seem like they’ll be woefully under-utilised.

FreeLegendaries

buy it end of year

Master_Ad1017

iPad Pro is gimmicky but the Air or even the standard iPad are actually cost about the same of the general android tablet while it can actually do real works instead of relying on the exact same mobile apps you can access even on the cheapest android phones

rip_jaws_97

I'd LOVE to get the 13 inch Air but since my iPhone and Macbook both have ProMotion I can't bear a 60hz screen. So I got the 13 inch pro. Just for ProMotion!

PsychologicalEcho726

I would say the Pros are definitely overpriced or maybe simply overkill for most people. Where I come from you can get a base macbook Air M3 + base iPad Air 11 M1 + Pencil for pretty much the same price as the base iPad Pro 13 + Keyboard + Pencil. I think you would have to do some serious artwork to justify the latter purchase.

alexcali2014

Regular iPads are dirt cheap.

m30wt0wn

As a digital artist nothing compares for me, so it’s worth every penny. Compared to struggling with Wacom tablets and the pen tool in illustrator you can’t beat Adobe Fresco and the Apple Pencil. Having enough processing power to move seamlessly from fresco to illustrator is also important for me.

Beginning-Hamster-68

I think it really depends by the needs: iPad is both extremely versatile in terms of functionality and number of things you can do with it and, at the same time, extremely clunky. Sometimes you need few steps more just to get the same exact result that you could get on a Mac/PC. Personally, as a comics artist, with an iPad Pro I get the best experience possible, with the best hardware and the best software, the best screen and the best connection I could ask for and for a better price than a dedicated device. More in general, I can’t really understand the actual Air lineup and I find hard to recommend it: for around the same price you can buy an older M series iPad Pro, which is basically identical but with a promotion display. Probably it’s just me, but here in Italy, the base 128gb 11” iPad Air is around €720 with a 60hz IPS monitor. I can do without the mini led or oled, but it’s hard to justify the 60Hz, to me.

kennykerberos

The M4 iPad Pro is a beast for photo editing and rendering video on the go. And the screen is amazing. But it depends on what software you want to use.

bayoughozt

YES. And it has finally gotten so bad that I am leaving the platform for now. I love the devices, but Apple’s failure to fix the glaring and easily fixable flaws is too much.

Stop-BS

They’re not overpriced for what they are, meaning, they’re an expensive technology. They’re overpriced for what they do. Most folks aren’t using them in a manner that needs anywhere near that amount of firepower.

Finnatically

I am happy with the M4 13” iPad Pro with Apple Magic Keyboard Case. It is far and away my favorite way to do most things.

UNCfan07

Absolutely.

Fire_Lord_Cinder

It would be easier to justify if the upgrades didn’t cost so much. Adding cellular and upgrading the storage makes it almost as expensive as my m3 pro MBP.

Spammedspammer

I have an iPad Pro, yes they are overpriced for what you get. You’re better off getting pro m1 or m1 air or m2 13 inch You only get Apple Pencil if you are an artist, if you have money to buy do what you wish after all they are nice to have features. Another thing is that most apps are running a size up version of the mobile counterparts, so you can’t replace a laptop.

MotorboatJ

Depends on your use of it. I'm a full time student and I don't know what I would do without it. With as much time I spend using it I am glad I bought the 1TB 13" pro.

wizzywizz123

iPad is a tablet, when compared to the other tablet options it’s the best. The price is fair when compared to other high end tablets like the one from Samsung. If you want a laptop buy one, this is the best tablet available, and I’m good with that.

EddieRyanDC

“Limited software”? IPadOS has by far the largest and most robust tablet apps of any platform. What else are you going to use? Android? Windows? They don’t have a fraction of what’s available for the iPad. And you can get an iPad to run that software now for $350. That doesn’t sound overpriced to me.

migs_003

Yes. Most of what most people want done on them, contact consumption, can be done on their cheaper models with minimal loss in quality or function. Ipad air with pen support takes care of creatives. Only real valid reason would be the sizing of the tablet. Hardware and apps for the most part are shared between all models and can be had for a lesser cost. Apples storage structure is trash, for consumers, but great for their pockets. If only people knew of external drives and how to set up their own server at home.

Remy149

I’m completely fine using an external drive with a MacBook but once you have to start plugging things into an iPad it becomes a more cumbersome tablet.

shinkamui

They dont need to be cheaper, the hardware cost and R&D are what they are. They just need to give pros better options. More pro apps, onboard development, less restrictions on apps that can use that power, or just give people a f\*\*king choice on what they want to run on the ipad pro.

Remy149

The lack of more pro apps is on the app developer more than Apple. Even Microsoft office suite doesn’t have enough parity between Mac and iPad

nopowernowork

iPad Pro is overpriced starting with the 2018 model. I think 2020 model was warranted to be at 2018 price, but 2018 should've been at 2017 price as it brought zero new features, just a form factor change. Like iPad Air to iPad 4. Only iPad Air 2 was a much better tablet, Air 1 was reskinned outdated mess. and iPhone 6s was a big 5S, 6S was the good one.

AdditionalLeg

Pro yes air no

Pau1ey

💯 but I’d bet the artists who use them to draw on disagree. They’re a niche product at the current pricing. Just give us a 2-in-1 touchscreen MacBook Air with detachable keyboard already Apple 😩

Revoffthetrain

Only if you’re stupid enough to spend more money on a device than you need it for. If you spend $2000 on an iPad Pro and are disappointed by the software, I don’t know what to tell you. Do your research

Much-Current-4301

Not overpriced as long as you don’t use for daily work. Files sucks. So does PowerPoint and keynote.

Redhook420

Extremely.

nutty-one

It seems a complete waste to me (of time and consumers money) to include an M4 chip in the iPad Pro but with the limitations of the OS now.
