I saw some wonderful things happen when people had the help and support that they needed. Or when kids were just safe and able to thrive in better environments. A family friend had some foster kids and in the first six months they stayed with him and his wife they thrived. Put on badly needed weight, lost the frightened and hunted look, did better in school. It took him five years of begging, pleading and fighting for those boys but the kids got adopted. Now both boys are adults. One went to college with the majority paid by scholarship. The other went to a trade school and joined a union.
Their birth parents had sad endings. One OD’d and died. The other is in jail for murder.
I shudder to think of what those boys would be like if they had been returned to that environment.
Next time I rad about something horrifying, I’ll remember *you* and my friend and the way you both saved children from becoming statistics instead of people. 💙
Honestly it’s the foster carers (like your neighbour, wow) who are the ones who go above and beyond. Actually bringing a child into your home and enveloping them into your life is a really big deal. Especially as some of those kids can be very hard work with problem behaviours because of all of the shit they have been through. I was really just a government worker, but it could feel like valuable work at times. Horrifyingly underfunded though. Thank you so much for your kind words!
