and this is more annoying to film than a time lapse. You can just put your phone on and click start, and hours (days for grass?) later come get it and, wow, it's done.
The post processing of Timelapses can be pretty involved, especially if you’re working with natural lighting.
This looks like an hour’s worth of effort.
Doing this as a legitimate Timelapse would require at least a week’s worth of planning and organising, and another few days of cleaning up the footage.
Designing and building the rig, ensuring you have complete control of the filming location, coordinating with other people, planning the shot and the workflow, insuring gear, working around weather etc
Basically the standards that come with any multi day shoot, with the caveat that you’ll be shooting 24/7, and if it’s outside, you need to put a lot of work into controlling the scene, especially in regards to light. Not remotely trivial.
You don’t just rock up, place a camera down, and let it shoot. I mean, you can, but you’ll increase the post processing workload by an order of magnitude.
Something like this is _all_ in the planning.
Honestly, a week is being pretty generous. BBC quality Timelapses for broadcast doing similar things take _months_ to plan.
It really is much much harder than pressing record on a phone when you are dealing with natural event in a natural environment. Specially lighting can a pain but also that the environment can change unexpectedly due to animal or wind.
But it's only obvious to people who are already familiar with the growth patterns of grass. If this is their first point of exposure, then to them this is what it looks like when grass grows.
Which is a small part of why this is shitty, but it's no worse than any other entertainment-oriented misinformation that completely saturates most people's worldviews.
This. Plants move all over the place in line with where the light is as they are growing. It's really evident in sped up time lapses. Not so here, it just goes straight up and that's it. Looks very obviously fake if you've watched any real plant growth time lapses. Even blade size changing thickness etc.
I remember the story but I think I've read that there was something more "deep", not just hate, sth sth copyright, not sure
Edit: not copyright but a protest against censorship
From the [the wiki article](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paint_Drying): Paint Drying is a 2023 British experimental protest film that was produced, directed and shot by Charlie Shackleton. He created the film in 2016 to protest against film censorship in the United Kingdom and the sometimes-prohibitive cost to independent filmmakers which the British Board of Film Classification's (BBFC) classification requirement imposes. The film consists of 607 minutes (10 hours and 7 minutes) of a static view of white paint drying on a brick wall.
Parts of the world and time of year, and at those times the lighting would not change much in terms of intensity, but it would change in terms of point source. So, shadows would spin around, but the lighting brightness would mostly stay the same.
I know both are technically still art, but time lapse photography is the finger painting level of photography. Harder stupid, what these guys are doing is actually harder. It's doubly stupid because it's harder than the real thing and doesn't look as good.
Even if you **ARE** watching on a phone, unless you’ve got orientation lock on (which I’d wager the overwhelming majority of people don’t) all it’s gonna do is give you a shitty sideways video in a different orientation anyway. This video sucks ass no matter what type or size of device you’re watching it on.
Many BBC series about plants have beautiful timelapse, Life also my favorite one. That scense you mentioned definitely one of the best example of how timelapse properly done.
If you want to see some seriously ridiculous nature timelapses (I mean like dude. What? How?) watch the green planet from bbc earth. Literally jaw-dropping footage
This is either an elaborate Shitpost or the doofuses wanted to do something that looked like a timelapse with minimal effort. In either case, this is not a timelapse.

Even for a fake one it’s very low effort and it shows in the result. Could have made it slower, introduced wind artificially from multiple directions (making the grass move in a more natural way) and chopped up the frames to make it look more like a timelapse. The background being unchanged is also very inconsistent with what a timelapse would look like.
Umm... don't you think people would notice it's day time the entire time lapse? And the light would be moving across the sky in reality, how are you gonna fake that?
These bot posts are starting to just become incredibly tedious and lame as fuck.
This isn't a timelapse, this isn't how timelapses are filmed, and this isn't how grass grows.
AI karma farming bots should be banned. Site wide.
this is how a shitty fake timelapse is filmed
and this is more annoying to film than a time lapse. You can just put your phone on and click start, and hours (days for grass?) later come get it and, wow, it's done.
I mean, it's a few weeks really but still. Faking it is pretty cringe Also: "How long could it take for grass to grow Michael? A few hours?"
*Here’s some money. Go see a Star War.*
![gif](giphy|l2Sqj1vsFCSCs6k5G)
How did she do that so badly on purpose? It has always impressed me
That is a star studded cast, they're all amazing actors.
And the writing ain't bad either.
If you think this is cringe, wait till you see the rest of the world!

Yep, and absolutely no one really gives a shit in the end.
What the fuck do you do all week when planning this?
Designing and building the rig, ensuring you have complete control of the filming location, coordinating with other people, planning the shot and the workflow, insuring gear, working around weather etc Basically the standards that come with any multi day shoot, with the caveat that you’ll be shooting 24/7, and if it’s outside, you need to put a lot of work into controlling the scene, especially in regards to light. where i live, you set your phone outside and do that, you come back 15 minutes later and its dead cause it got baked by the sun and it shut off
It really is much much harder than pressing record on a phone when you are dealing with natural event in a natural environment. Specially lighting can a pain but also that the environment can change unexpectedly due to animal or wind.
Yes and then you get a day and night cycle
Grass does not grow that fast, if you need the footage, this faking makes sense
Shitty is correct. Without even including the part showing how they did it it's still obvious the grass is not growing the way it's supposed to grow.
But it's only obvious to people who are already familiar with the growth patterns of grass. If this is their first point of exposure, then to them this is what it looks like when grass grows. Still 8k upvotes tho. Fuck this website and all its bots.
Thank you!

And please downvote this garbage post.
The fake tike lapse is filmed.
Rather watch Timelapse of paint drying.
This is grass being pushed up through dirt to simulate growth 📈
No it’s not, this is only simulating. Sure, you don’t have time do this, but the art is one of patience and skill.
You know what, I think Ima go watch some timelapse videos on flowers growing.
Boxlapse on YouTube has some great time-lapse content.
I just checked them out, absolutely incredible!
I'm going to watch paint dry and think about the universe.
Fun fact: an artist sent a 12 hour film about paint drying to the censors cos he hated them.
I remember the story but I think I've read that there was something more "deep", not just hate, sth sth copyright, not sure Edit: not copyright but a protest against censorship From the [the wiki article](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paint_Drying): Paint Drying is a 2023 British experimental protest film that was produced, directed and shot by Charlie Shackleton. Check out Sir David Attenborough's "The Green Planet". Educational, and pretty amazing how they make plants feel so alive.
If they were trying to pass it off as time lapse they’d know to go from day/night
A lot of plants move around as they grow, too. They don’t just rise up out of the ground, they usually twist about very slowly.
There are parts of the world where it wouldn't but I believe the lighting would still change somewhat.
Parts of the world and time of year, and at those times the lighting would not change much in terms of intensity, but it would change in terms of point source. So, shadows would spin around, but the lighting brightness would mostly stay the same.
you can cut out the night shots of the timelapse to show just the growing part (how much does grass really grow at night?)
I know both are technically still art, but time lapse photography is the finger painting level of photography. Harder stupid, what these guys are doing is actually harder. It's doubly stupid because it's harder than the real thing and doesn't look as good.
Thanks for clarifying. I thought a dude pushing grass up from under a table is how it’s actually grown.
not really a timelapse anymore now is it?
I checked and time did lap, so I believe it qualifies.
Technically correct is funny to me, at least until someone does it to me 😞
What was your time?
time cant run laps smh 😒😒
rotate my.... um... 55" monitor?
Or my 75" tv
Pfft, asking to rotate, the guy, guy with the SEVENTY FIVE INCH TV
And my Axe!
Yeah. I don't understand why half the people on the internet are idiots these days. Why would one film a single video in 2 different orientations?
what you guys don't have phones?
Even if you **ARE** watching on a phone, unless you’ve got orientation lock on (which I’d wager the overwhelming majority of people don’t) all it’s gonna do is give you a shitty sideways video in a different orientation anyway. This video sucks ass no matter what type or size of device you’re watching it on.
Auto-rotation in my phone flips it again
No it’s not. Watch the series The Green Planet (BBC) to see how they filmed timelapse.
Life S01E09 (Plants) has one of the BEST Timelapse segments. David Attenborough and the BBC Natural history unit are undefeated.
Many BBC series about plants have beautiful timelapse, Life also my favorite one. That scense you mentioned definitely one of the best example of how timelapse properly done.
The BBC and mister Attenborough have nothing on TikTok and Joey Samuel.
> Mister I was willing to look past your TikTok comparison but calling him Mr instead of Sir is downright heresy. 😡 Gr8 b8 m8
David Attenborough has been knighted twice, so that's Sir Sir Attenborough
“Sir”, not mister.
I mean op does have an autogenerated name so I'm not exactly expecting quality posts from them
No it isn't.
Anyone who ever saw a real timelapse of a plant growing will know this is fake.
What a shock, the grass doesn't come out already yellowing?
I was shocked they got the sun to stand still for a few days
I feel bamboozled dumbfounded flabbergasted
That’s totally inappropriate. It’s lewd, lascivious, salacious, outrageous.
And I won't stand for it.
Fingerblasted
Fiberglassed
Schmeckledorfed!
🤣✊
My entire reality is a lie!
Hoodwinked. Lead astray. Run amock. Flat out deceived.
I am shooketh
Didnt know walking with a backpack was part of pulling grass.
No it's not!
What's even the point of filming something like this? If you don't have the patience then spare us..
lol. Because full blades of grass come out of soil. Sure. 👍
No it’s not
They couldn't even get it horizontal. Losers.
Yeah that looks real for someone who never saw a real life green plant in their lives before. otherwise it doesn't look real.
This is a new low to disrespect professional photographers and videographers.
7k people upvote this crap? We are doom
EVERYTHING IS FAKE ON THE INTERNET
I knew it was fake. Grass don't grow sideways like that!
BRAWNDO — it’s what plants crave!
Is my whole life a lie?
God damn. Everything is fake these days.
A lot of hate in these comments, it’s pretty obvious it’s not a real timelapse, that’s the point.
The point is to make a shitty, and obviously not real, version of a timelapse? Why?
No it’s not. The title states this is how they film timelapses of grass growing which is wrong
[удалено]
And then there are real time lapses
The title is misleading. This is not how it's done.
I think he is being sarcastic. This video is indeed just fraud.
This is how a timelapse video of a grass growing is ~~filmed~~ faked. FIFY Still an interesting post though!
LIES! Lies and subterfuge!
Cheating everywhere!

No it isn't.
Fake everywhere we look.
Can see the ant walking backwards.
I feel betrayed
Where is the timelapse?
The giveaway is that the grass doesn't dance how plants do in the sunlight. They do little flicks and change position as they grow.
My life is a lie
And the advertisement will say something like "how nature intended" or sum bs
How lies are filmed
Do paint drying next.
ME FLIPPING MY MONITOR
The sun never set and rose.
A real let down
Everything is a lie.....
Sideways?
Can we get a video of how that was filmed please?
more vertical video bullshit :P
r/tiktokcringe
Fake news
Funny how it never gets dark out during that lapse. This is how a middle schooler films a fake time lapse video.
pretty obviously not a timelapse from the final product alone, they have far more jitter
No, not really. This is just some shameless hack phoning in a faux time lapse.
How is that getting any like?
It is pretty amazing how they have constant daylight while this grass grows over the period of Days or weeks... Eyeroll
That guy’s a phoney
No, it’s not.
It isn't really is it
It's a long shot but does anyone know what the music playing in the video is?
bot
"rOtAtE yOuR pHoNe!" How about you at least stick with an orientation. FFS. It's bad enough they film in portrait, now we're mixing and matching?
Lol and this shit have 2,5k of upvotes...? This ISN'T how a grown is filmed wtf
Fake and annoying like the Z on his bag.
Even for a fake one it’s very low effort and it shows in the result. I guess it saves time setting up a time lapse camera and waiting for it to grow
This ruined my day
looks so shit
Umm... don't you think people would notice it's day time the entire time lapse? And the light would be moving across the sky in reality, how are you gonna fake that?
Oh! Cheating! Cool.
this Looks so Fake... compared to real timelapses
BBC and national geographic would like to have a word.
Fakelaps
Why does this have 5000 upvotes when it's not how a time lapse video of grass growing is filmed
... no, it's not.
You can’t fool me that’s not how apical meristems grow.
These bot posts are starting to just become incredibly tedious and lame as fuck. This isn't a timelapse, this isn't how timelapses are filmed, and this isn't how grass grows. AI karma farming bots should be banned. Site wide.
Boooo. BOOOOOO!
Man I wonder how that grass grew so fast in a day
Documentary cinematographers making botanists and plant biologists sad. Grasses are a really interesting model organism for plant evo-devo.
![gif](giphy|MZj0sGDUg8qAyWNBZh|downsized)
remember when Vertical Video Syndrome was a thing?
This is not, in facts, at all interesting.
Literally not a timelapse or a video of grass growing. Fuck these bots…
This his how a timelapse of growing grass is *faked*. Fixed it
Fake, it’s reversed
![gif](giphy|WrxoaVPiq0cG4)
This is not a time lapse video. This is how you make a video that *looks* like one
Bot Account behavior
1. No 2. Don't fucking tell me to rotate my phone I'm on a computer and this video looks like shit now
I don't think op knows what timelapse means.
No
No magic
Honestly , I always wondered how they did it
beginning to think r/interesting is run by 12 year olds.
Not a time lapse. Barely a special effect
That's.... Not a time lapse of grass growing?
So, not a Timelapse, nor growth.
Speaking of not faking it. Green planet is one of the best shows I’ve ever watched. David Attenborough is a treasure.
Yeah, hey, OP? Abandon the flesh.
Lmao a real timelapse would have shown day and night changes
ALL FAKE AGAIN!
Even fucking grass growing being filmed is fake.
It looks unconvincing anyways also probably shit quality from a Z fascists.
The final result being shown verticle is really the icing on the cake.
I've never felt so betrayed since I first found out @ 12 years old that WWE (then WWF) was scripted.
Is their next project watching paint dry or water boil?
Louie Schwartzberg would disagree
Those bastards lied to me
My life is a lie
I did not need to know this. Fuckin internet 😤
Boooooooooooooooo
Yeah but it looks fake. Pretty sure you have never seen new grass grow
Some fuckery
So smart!!
Not a timelapse
You can tell it’s fake because the sun doesn’t set or rise
OP is useless. This is not a timelapse this is the faking of one.
lol you can tell its 100% fake because the dirt never changes and grass grows with out rain?
