Dogs. Their urine adds nitrogen and extra water to the grass, causing it to green up and grow fast. Dead spots will occur in those same areas with larger dogs who urinate more, killing the grass.
The problem with gardern lime (granulated calcium) is that it can change the soil ph, so I've been told ; why unless you use a lot of gypsum it neutralizes the urea nitrogen of urine without changing the soil ph.i have used both but after switching found that gypsum works best for me. The calcium takes longer to breakdown any the gypsum start neutral the urea within hours.
Gypsum does NOT neutralize urea, and DOES lower the pH. That's primarily what gypsum is used for with uric acid, you already have low PH, and high nitrogen. Calcium will bond the the nitrogen, forming calcium nitrate and slowing its release, plus it will buffer the uric acid and raise the pH.
Not going to argue with you, I was warned by the mode for saying what you justbsaid as being incorrect. As I said , I have used both. Both works, just gypsum works faster. Take it up with the moderator.
From my understanding the urine is the same male or female. It’s the difference in how they pee, females get low to the ground and make a puddle of urine where male dogs tend to sprinkle more. Small amounts of pee is good for the grass where a large puddle will kill it.
Because the volume of pee is inconsequential. Our tiny girl burns grass just like our big girl. Our giant boy doesn’t burn anything.
The issue is a pH difference
One thing I will say is my 100lb male dog doesn't burn the grass in my yard, just makes it greener where he pees, but he pees like a female dog. Squats instead of the leg lift.
We have 75lb Newfoundland poodle mix and if I could bottle her piss up and use it as fertilizer I would. It’s better than Milo lol
EDIT: words and basic grammar
I somehow managed to teach my dog to poop and pee on command wherever I point. He was recently on prednisone which is a diuretic and makes them super thirsty and pee A LOT.
I noticed his normal pee spot was becoming greener than the rest and started having him pee in strategic places so that the grass was evenly watered. It worked way better than I thought it would.
If your dog has routine eating times and doesn’t graze all day, try mixing water into their food. It’s helped my dogs and lawn. Someone said the dead spots are often a sign of dehydration and getting them to drink more water will delude the Uria in their pee.
I've given up until my dog crosses the rainbow bridge. He is elderly and can't make it to his favorite spot in the brush and now just pees wherever. I will wait until then to rebuild my lawn.
Some spots may come back over time, but many times that spot will stay dead and you’ll have to rake it out and reseed. Where I live you can buy a product called Revive that sometimes brings back grass that is not quite dead from pee spots, but it doesn’t always work.
Lots of people are just making clover yards because it’s better for the environment lasts longer and is easier to take care of. I am fully going back to native plants in my yard., takes a long time
We have a dog park mix of clover and fescue in mine
Think all clover would be a bit hard as it tends to die off a bit in winter by us so have found the mix really robust to hold up to my 2 90 pound dogs
Oh yeah, I see. I’m in upstate New York so everything dies here in the winter haha, and the clover and grass come back pretty much the same time but the clover gets beautiful. Tasty little flowers that the bunnies like to munch on and I like to munch on too because they’re edible and they taste good.
Luckily, my dog weighs only 5.5 pounds and her 2 inch puddles of pee don’t harm a thing haha
I've found some of my dogs leave dead spots, but most don't. the 2 biggest, 100 lb or so, didn't. Those were both males. One of my smallest, a < 40 lb husky mix female, used to but doesn't anymore. My bro swears girls do and boys don't
I'm the crazy person who follows their dog out with a watering can whenever my dog does his business. My lawn is too small to let him kill the whole thing and have my yard look like shit
Actually it seems to be male dogs make grass grow and female kill the grass. Can't say I've scientifically researched this except every dog owner I've asked fits into this assumption.
Females pee in larger puddles causing fertilizer burn, male dogs tend too sprinkle more when they pee not causing such a concentrated puddle. Also climate matters, if you live in the PNW where it rains more you don’t see as much burning from dog urine.
Yes unless you go to a raw diet. (I’m assuming)
Female dog used to make yellow spots. Now after more than a year of raw diet, haven’t seen any since. Just the dark green spots like in the photo but I prefer that rather than the yellow. I also definitely take better care of my lawn now too. So could be a mix of both
55lb female dog here. No dead spots, grass where she pees is always taller. I wonder if it's because she pees in multiple spots every time she goes instead of one giant pee puddle? Gotta spread that scent around.
Edit - No fancy diet here either.
Looks like our little furry friend is the culprit.

Yup, also, just a tip, first and foremost, it’s def the dog urine. It is essentially fertilizer. Those deep green areas are greatly fertilized. Also, it’s a sign the other parts of your yard desire more nitrogen. Here’s your problem. You can’t just go throw fertilizer out there bc the dark green spots will turn brown from too much nitrogen. You could try a slow release fertilizer that is low in nitrogen like a 10-0-0. It would feed your soil and not burn the dark green spots.
I had a redneck friend who did just that. He noticed that his german shepherd would pee everywhere anybody else did; he just had to have the last word. In fact, the dog would go back and drink more untill all his territory had been reacquired.
Well, this fella thought "If I just pee along the fence and hedge along the side of the property, the dog should always pee there." Turns out it took just 30 days to make a habit, and after that the galvanized fence wire started rusting real quick. Lawn looked great though. 👍
My dog's pee never really burned the lawn until I fertilized it this year with a new fertilizer. It's super green and thick, but nitrogen is clealry maxed. My 25lb Boston Terrier makes it look like I have a 70lb Husky peeing out there.
I have 2 huskies, and they dont do damage to the backyard anymore.
I wish I knew the exact random cocktail of grasses that I have in my backyard because I could sell it for millions. It's about a decade of throwing the lowest priced big box store seed on it twice a year.
My front yard is 100% KBG and is about 1/3rd as thick as the back.
The dog pee in your yard was too much nitrogen. In OP's post, there's not enough. Not enough nitrogen, and dog pee will turn it green. If there's already adequate nitrogen in the yard then the dog pee will be too much and will kill it. You got to have the right balance.
hmm.. what's better? Mostly pale grass with clumps of very healthy grass like OP has? Or mostly healthy grass with dead, yellow spots?
I have dogs. I've decided to go with the 2nd option. I can live with some dead spots.
Fertilizer will help very quickly but you will have to reapply it 3-4 times a season. I would highly recommend getting some compost and using a compost spreader to put a thin layer of compost on your lawn every spring. Compost is basically a slow release fertilizer. Then you won't see the radical swings like you do now and you probably won't have to do many fertilizer applications during the season.
My lawn has these same green spots, but I don't have a dog. The other night after a few beers, I was outside peeing, when it dawned on me, I was the one fertilizing my lawn. Dropped some 40-0-0 yesterday, now I've got to find a new place to pee outside.
Sorta, basically. The urine of dogs is rich in urea, which breaks down to available N in the form of ammonium in the soil through the process of hydrolysis. So...yeah.
We had a snowman in my lawn over the winter and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why that would make the lawn so green there. This post finally made it click!
female dogs. Concentrate the urine in a smaller area . This contributes to the nitrogen burns similar to
Over applying fertilizer. Lower protein level of food helps. But don’t go to low. Apply lime to areas this will help neutralize the ph . It’s not magic dust it will help but It takes a while to work
I had a neighbor in a condo many years ago with a big Rhodesian Ridgeback that left big brown spots. She would go out after him and pour a bucket of water on the spot. Can't ruin those public areas.
Looks like your soil has a nitrogen deficiency and all those lush green clumps are where the dog has peed. Dog urine has a high amount of nitrogen.
If you are bagging your lawn clippings, you can switch to using a mulching blade and leaving the grass on the lawn.

In which case. Shit man, I dunno
Dogs. Their urine adds nitrogen and extra water to the grass, causing it to green up and grow fast. Dead spots will occur in those same areas with larger dogs who urinate more, killing the grass.
Yeah - my dog is around 60lbs and she kills any spot she pees on.
Sprinkle some gypsum on any yellowing spots and a gallon of water, no more dead spots.
Palletized calcium for dog spots. Gypsum for salt burn.
Do you just sprinkle it on the spot or do the entire area like once a week?
I just sprinkle on the spots usually about twice a week, I don't want to do anything unnecessary since I'm have other yard work.
A whole pallet seems excessive.
Sometimes, for best results, you have to go full shock and awe to put a lawn in its place.
Does this revive previously yellowed areas as well, or just ones that were recently hit?
If they are yellow it means the roots aren't totally dead yet, if the spots are brown it means that it is too late.
Do you add this after the dead spot starts showing or before. Cuz I can’t keep track on what area they pee. But I do have a lot of dead spots.
What’s the product? Available at HD?
Lawn gypsum available at HD, LOWES, ETC. You want the powder not the pellets. The powder works faster.
I was told female dog urine specifically kills grass due to higher ammonia. Not sure how true that is. My 2 30lb male dogs don't kill grass
From my understanding the urine is the same male or female. It’s the difference in how they pee, females get low to the ground and make a puddle of urine where male dogs tend to sprinkle more. Small amounts of pee is good for the grass where a large puddle will kill it.
Not true my girls annihilate grass, my 110 pound bubba just makes it greener. The girls are 8lbs and 70lbs, both burn the shit out of the yard
Ok, so I assume Bubba is a male?
Yeah, he’s a big doofus greening up my lawn
So you agree with aggressive then. Whyd you say not true? Lol
5 downvotes lol what did I say that was controversial
My two female labs kill the grass everytime.
I have seen a large male dog pee and it’s like a loose firehose and sprays a large area. My little female squats and it all goes in a tiny area.
4 150ish lb Newfies and their side of the yard grows incredibly fast
We have 75lb Newfoundland poodle mix and if I could bottle her piss up and use it as fertilizer I would. It’s better than Milo lol EDIT: words and basic grammar
I somehow managed to teach my dog to poop and pee on command wherever I point. He was recently on prednisone which is a diuretic and makes them super thirsty and pee A LOT. Hahahahaha that’s amazing.
I always thought it was over fertilization but gypsum is a good call as it might be acidity too
There are treats you can give dogs to make the pee not kill the grass
My neighbor had these rocks they put in their dogs water dish to help neutralize their urine. It seemed to work. He was obsessed over his grass.
I tried that. Didn’t work for me.
I love my grass more than the average person but I’m surely not going to alter my dogs body chemistry to ensure my lawns 100% green.
They don’t work
If your dog has routine eating times and doesn’t graze all day, try mixing water into their food. It’s helped my dogs and lawn. Someone said the dead spots are often a sign of dehydration and getting them to drink more water will delude the Uria in their pee.
Vet told me to put a bit of vinegar in their water.
Ketchup works and they like it
On their food, sorry
Sorry you mind using a metric measure?
95 pound Akita and 75 pound husky... Dead spots galore
you feed them real food like that farmer's stuff? or the pretzels in a bag dog food??
I've given up until my dog crosses the rainbow bridge. He is elderly and can't make it to his favorite spot in the brush and now just pees wherever. I will wait until then to rebuild my lawn.
What should I put down when they kill spots in my grass?
The dogs. OFFICIAL DISCLAIMER: That was a joke. Please don't put down your dogs. Please don't be offended. It was just a joke. Guys! C'mon.
Instructions unclear. I've been carrying an 80 lbs dog for the last 5+ hours. Arms getting tired. Hungry AF. When can I put them down?
Never. This is your life now.
Actually laughed out loud
Some spots may come back over time, but many times that spot will stay dead and you’ll have to rake it out and reseed. Where I live you can buy a product called Revive that sometimes brings back grass that is not quite dead from pee spots, but it doesn’t always work.

this
I'm the crazy person who follows their dog out with a watering can whenever my dog does his business. My lawn is too small to let him kill the whole thing and have my yard look like shit
I would think a decent sprinkler set up on a timer would help mitigate this?
Does this mean my 12 lb dog will not be killing the grass I just aquired?
It’s not a guarantee, but smaller dogs are much less likely to cause damage.
Actually it seems to be male dogs make grass grow and female kill the grass. Can't say I've scientifically researched this except every dog owner I've asked fits into this assumption.

Yes little pees are much better.
Goldilocks pee

He is instantly forgiven.
Furgiven maybe?
Nice. Hopefully he apawlogised
Why can’t you admit that you get drunk and pee in the grass?
Okay, you got me. That's just random dog I found online 😂
You get drunk and do that?
I don’t need to be drunk for that. Neighbors love me.
My Neighbors don’t have binoculars so they don’t even notice me
That small huh?
They can mind their business
Yup, also, just a tip, first and foremost, it’s def the dog urine. It is essentially fertilizer. Those deep green areas are greatly fertilized. I'm gonna start pissing in my lawn

I was absolutely coming in to ask for the dog tax. Marking this PAID. THANK YOU ![gif](giphy|67ThRZlYBvibtdF9JH|downsized)
Cute ass dog
Install a tree for him to go on, localise the stains.
Adorable dog. Did you get him in Kauai by chance??
Good dog.
What a beautiful pup! Is it a Jack Russell?
Who? Me?
Dogs
Give the dogs more water and tell them to pee more. They are fertilizing for ya.
I never fertilize my back yard and it's always so much more lush than the front. And I have a service doing the front!
My dog's pee never really burned the lawn until I fertilized it this year with a new fertilizer. It's super green and thick, but nitrogen is clealry maxed. My 25lb Boston Terrier makes it look like I have a 70lb Husky peeing out there.

Fertilizing with used barley and hops off the back porch?
If dog urine is causing a green up like this, it means your lawn is hungry for nitrogen. Fertilize it.
Yeah, but then when your dogs pee they'll just kill the grass instead
This is what happened to my yard.. confusion
The dog pee in your yard was too much nitrogen. In OP's post, there's not enough. Not enough nitrogen, and dog pee will turn it green. If there's already adequate nitrogen in the yard then the dog pee will be too much and will kill it. You got to have the right balance.
Yes. So go pee on your dog's pee. This is the Way of the Pack.
There is no balance to a lawn with a dog that pees in random spots. It’s either this, or it’ll all be dark green with a bunch of dead spots
I would rather have green spots then all the dead spots I have now :(
Jeez I came so far to find this, thanks. Because I was like "dog pee makes green? Ok got it. Oh dog pee creates dead spots? Ok... Which is it?"
hmm.. what's better? Mostly pale grass with clumps of very healthy grass like OP has? Or mostly healthy grass with dead, yellow spots? I have dogs. I've decided to go with the 2nd option. I can live with some dead spots.
This. Easy to spot seed throughout the year as well to fill in those spots or just wait until if overseeding time in the fall.
Won’t happen if you apply just a moderate amount of slow release fertilizer. Should be fine.
Maybe a slow release fert like milorganite would do the trick. Milo is a little stinky though(its literally composted human poop lol)
I was gonna say he needs more.dogs
You have to go out there and pee in between all the spots where your dog pees.
Fertilizer will help very quickly but you will have to reapply it 3-4 times a season. I would highly recommend getting some compost and using a compost spreader to put a thin layer of compost on your lawn every spring. Compost is basically a slow release fertilizer. And it’s dirt cheap! Ba dum tis!
Good dirt is anything but cheap.
Username checks out OP. Stop pooin in the yard.
How many furry friends do you have? Where do they pee?
Get your dog to pee more evenly
Fuckin A man
Hint: It goes woof woof
Did anyone mention dog pee? Probably female?
Looks like you have at least one dog.
My lawn has these same green spots, but I don't have a dog. The other night after a few beers, I was outside peeing, when it dawned on me, I was the one fertilizing my lawn. Dropped some 40-0-0 yesterday, now I've got to find a new place to pee outside.
Have you got a citrus tree? They love your pee. Your wife and friends will love knowing where to avoid sitting/sunbathing etc.
Looks like a combination of KBG and Tall Fescue. The bunches look like clumping tall fescue.
yep
D’ya like dahgs?
I like caravans more.
What’s your dogs name?
🐶
Dogs. Their feces is full of nutrients for the grass.
Apply fertilizer. Scott’s turff builder should do the work, it will green up up the lawn evenly.
You gotta mow it !!!!
Das pee pee
female dog huh? or it was nice afterparty with main question where is toilet :DF
Doggy piss
Doggie pee spots. Or really really poorly applied fertilizer.
Aliens
I’m more concerned those power lines back there. You can’t have anyone over 6 ft tall in the backyard.
It's probably a clothesline.
Have a dog?
Why doesn’t mine?
The dog’s piss adds nitrogen to the soil. Or so I’ve been told
Sorta, basically. The urine of dogs is rich in urea, which breaks down to available N in the form of ammonium in the soil through the process of hydrolysis. So...yeah.
Gremlins
Why's your dog's green up the grass but my little Maltese thing makes the grass turn into a wasteland like fallout 4?
I’ve heard that if your dog pees turn the lawn green, then you need to Nitrogen
A few people commented that a female dog's urine will turn it green, a male dog's urine will kill it. Not sure if that's true.
My dog greens up the lawn from September through April and kills it the rest of the year
Female dog uterine
Female dog
Looks like your lawn has been sleeping around on you
FEED IT!
looks like clumping fescue
Piss
Patch seed
Ok so I won’t get too specific, but I think this might be my college home from years ago, does this happen to be in Alabama?
spray it with liquid Iron. it will be dark green in 2 days. also maybe get some fertilizer with some nitrogen in it
Looks exactly like the Honey of Shrunk the kids backyard
Are those stalks with the grain seed things on top weeds?
Because you have a dog. Consider yourself lucky that it’s not dead in the middle of each spot.
Got dogs?
Female dog pee.
We had a snowman in my lawn over the winter and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why that would make the lawn so green there. This post finally made it click!
Dog pee
Could be any night time animal spraying there territory, plant a camera see what you see
Looks like an invasion of Dalisgrass
We have a female dog and she only drinks alkaline water. She does not kill our grass. 🤷♀️
Sins of the father... sins of the father.
Ahhhh yes I’ve seen this before, sir, what you have here is a classic example of grass
My lawn looks like this with 2 three-pound toy breeds.
Because you don’t spend $1000-$2000 a year on it 🙁 me either
Dogs
Tell me you have dogs, without telling me you have dogs.
Do you have dogs?
female dogs. Concentrate the urine in a smaller area . This contributes to the nitrogen burns similar to Over applying fertilizer. Lower protein level of food helps. But don’t go to low. Apply lime to areas this will help neutralize the ph . It’s not magic dust it will help but It takes a while to work
What can be done to discourage dogs (not mine) being taken for walks from peeing on the publicly accessible front lawn?
There are supplements that help With this but I would recommend checking with the vet before giving one to your dog
Did the OP say they had dogs?
Throw down some fertilizer and let the rest of the yard green up?
I had a neighbor in a condo many years ago with a big Rhodesian Ridgeback that left big brown spots. She would go out after him and pour a bucket of water on the spot. Can't ruin those public areas.
did you reseed with different grass types? Looks like you need to fertilize it to let the yellow spots catch up
Try a different dog food.
Looks like your soil has a nitrogen deficiency and all those lush green clumps are where the dog has peed. Dog urine has a high amount of nitrogen. If you are bagging your lawn clippings, you can switch to using a mulching blade and leaving the grass on the lawn. Adding some clover to your lawn can also help increase nitrogen if you aren’t using a broad leaf herbicide.
Dog piss spots
My dog is 60 pounds and her pee makes the grass grow faster and stronger. Her poo encourages wild flowers to grow too. It looks great 😌
If you have a dog it’s where they have been relieving themselves.
That’s not dog urine. Looks like a wild grass. Use some bgone over it to kill it and then apply lawn food few weeks after.
Different types of grass, animal urine, not mowing often enough, not mowing high, not feeding lawn enough, etc.
Your dog
your dog is house broken !
water the spot right after your dog pees, and you avoid dead spots
If you want to neaten it up 1st cut it into strips about 12 inches wide, then peel back the turf, rake through the ground beneath with a metal rake, then put the grass back,it should even out any inconsistency with the grasses nutrition and hydration, and try to keep your dog from peeing on the grass, or any animal urine. I used to struggle with my lawn, I learnt a lot from sparsholt college I did horticulture lvl 1 which means I did 2 years of college study. I loved it and what I learned about myself most of all
Might be rock grass infiltrating it.
Well you see, the colonists were like “LETS BRING GRASS SEEDS FROM BRITTAN TO MAKE IT MORE HOMEY HERE IN AMERICA” and the other Brits were like “fuck yeh dude alright” and then they kinda fucked up the ecosystem in so many different ways cuz of iiiittt and blah blah blaaaaaahhhhh and that’s why your grass looks like that 😃 unless you don’t live in America.
